Farming these from the Silt Crawlers in Swamp of Sorrows seemed like a good idea. However, I killed about 25 of them and they didn't have a drop rate of 30% as listed. None dropped. Monstrous Crawlers drop fine though. Was this just rotten luck on my part or has the drop table changed?

It's much easier to just kill the murlocks there so just kill them, wile i was doing ''treath from the sea'' and ''continued the treath'' i got like 30 or 32 st from them.

the murlocs in dustwallow have a terrible drop rate. killed about 30-50 of them not one clam.

I tried farming a black pearl by hunting these clams and atm I seem to have 40 meat and 2 irisdicent pearl and none of black pearls, very slow way to get a pearl. It would be easier to just farm 8g and buy one from AH.

I ended up having to farm about two hours getting 47 Big-mouth Clam in order to get one Black Pearl, not exactly the best way to get them.

I don't know if it's only me, but whenever I get this clam, and read the "Open the clam!" it reminds me of some kid that wants to impress on his parent. So everytime I get one of these I always open it because of this invinceble child.

Then I sell the meat.

For some reason, these don't work for me anymore. I've gathered a dozen of them from turtles, and every time I right click one to open it, it just disappears and that's it. It doesn't create any meat or loot at all. Is there a level limit or something?

Farmed in Shalzaru's Lair, off-and-on over the course of 2 hours. The entrance is found near the Northwest coastline of the Isle of Dread, which itself is the southern island off the coast of Feralas.

Mobs found here:

Level 45ish non-elite nagas (mixed melee and caster mobs)
Caster naga warning: Caster mobs use frost spells which cause various slowing effects (when not resisted).

Respawn rate: Fast enough (The first mobs killed had respawned before I finished clearing the cave.)
Kill speed: Averaged 6-8 mobs per minute as a level 80 hybrid melee/caster class (see note below).
Drop rate: Approximately 1 Big-mouth Clam for every 3-4 mob kills (which is not great).

Note on farming anywhere: Kill speed will vary based primarily on respawn rate and character level versus mob level, but is also affected by mob difficulty (normal or elite), character aggro radius versus mob discovery radius (based on level discrepancy), class, spec, gear, attention span, mob spacing, corpse looting (if applicable), etc.

I stopped farming after looting 100 clams.

Farmed on Alcaz Island, off-and-on over the course of several hours. The island is located at the Northeast edge of Dustwallow Marsh, to the Northeast of Theramore Isle.

Mobs found here:

Level 60ish elite nagas (mixed melee and caster mobs)
Caster naga warning: Caster mobs use frost spells which cause various slowing effects (when not resisted).
Melee naga warning: Melee mobs use Knockdown, as well as Hamstring and Mortal Strike which cause various slowing effects (when not resisted).

Level 60ish elite hydras (melee mobs)
Hydra warning: Hydras inflict a disease which causes Nature damage every 10 seconds and increased Physical damage taken for 3 minutes (when not resisted).

Respawn rate: Average (The first mobs killed had respawned after approximately 10 minutes.)
Kill speed: Averaged 5-6 mobs per minute as a level 80 hybrid melee/caster class (see note below).
Drop rate: Approximately 1 Big-mouth Clam for every 3-5 mob kills (which is not great).

Not fishable during night time (00:00-6:00 am server time). Time doesn't affect on loots from mobs though

The latest hotfix has added Big-Mouth Clam back the mobs that should be dropping them. =)

Got my 10 Big-Mouth Clam/Zesty Clam Meat in Tanaris killing the tortoises there.

In addition to the Makura's in Swamp of Sorrows, I also found that the Murkdeep Murlocs drop these clams. Got a stack of them this morning while questing.

Also of note, you can get these clams off the Elite Giants in Feralas, but only if you have 'zapped them' using the Zapper from the goblin quest and turned them into the non-elite zapped form. The non-zapped giants do not drop them.

Bloodwash Barbarian, in blasted lands, actually drops these a lot faster! I farmed 40 of em in like 10 mins. Perfect for clams..

I worked the Tidal Striders and Steeljaw Snappers for some time off the coast of Tanaris, south of Gadgetzan. I opened 79 Big Mouth Clams and received:

1 Small Lustrous Pearl
1 Irridescent Pearl
1 Golden Pearl

I didn't find any Black Pearls. Also, the last 37 clams I opened gave nothing but clam meat. My assumption would be that Blizzard has screwed up the drop rate again.

I sent my hunter over to Thousand Needles to skin Stranded Sparkleshell Turtles. On the fourth Big Mouth Clam I opened I got a black pearl. So, perhaps the drop rate has been fixed.

However, I had already given up on finding one after opening 79 clams and getting nothing so I bought one in the auction house. To me, having to go to the auction house violates the spirit of the game. Also, having to play around Blizzards screw ups and patches is quite annoying.

I was killing the nagas in Blasted Lands for around 45-60 minutes, these are the results:

183 Runecloth
131 clams:
2 Black Pearls
2 Golden Pearls
1 Small Lustrous Pearl
2 Iridescent Pearl

I came here for the black pearl and Iridescent Pearls. Got the black pearl pretty fast, then it really slowed down until the end where i all of the sudden got 2 iridescent pearls, black pearl and a golden pearl.

After collecting 150 clams from naga in Red Reaches, I (lvl 60DK) netted:
150 clam meat
180 runecloth
6 iridescent pearls
4 golden pearls
8 black pearls
several greens and about 10g in vendor trash
Time invested was about 75 mins.
Oh and 5 Imperfect Draenethyst Fragments

Naga's in the cave under The Dark Portal in Blasted Lands drop it almost always, perfect for farming pearls. They drop Black Pearl, Golden Pearl, Small Lutrious Pearl and meat.

All I needed was 2 golden pearls and the AH had the cheapest for 400 gold. So I go farming.

Killing 571 Tidal Striders in Tanaris. 20g 28s 75c money drops
9 Green Items 1.57% 4g 81s 95c
20 Grey Items 3.5% 8g 30s 48c
320 Big-Mouth Clams 56%

Clams Had
320 Zesty Clam Meat 100% AH for 43g 20s
8 Black Pearls 2.5% AH for 72g
4 Iridescent Pearls 1.25% AH for (I think) 23g
1 Golden Pearl 0.3125% AH for about 200g

Ended up not needing the pearl anymore. I stopped farming when I got 1 golden pearl. I would never buy something so overpriced. I farmed for 2 hours and 13 minutes. So I guess by not buying it I made over 350 gold in a little over 2 hours.

Tidal Striders are a great source.
In In 74 clams I got 4 green pearls (iridescent, small lustrous and 2 black pearl).

I recommend grinding the Murlocs on the coast of the Swamp of Sorrows for these. The drop rate is high, and there are 2 rare murloc spawns along that beach as an added bonus. (芬加特 and 基摩里安)

If your a max level toon who just wants to farm a pearl, that may not matter much. If you're anywhere near the level of the mobs, however, the added XP bonus from killing rares makes the Swamp of Sorrows a much more enticing target than the giants in Tanaris.

I killed roughly 120 tidal striders, and off those i got a total of 60 clams. those 60 clams only dropped 4 black pearls and 1 gold pearl. if youre gathering for pearls, be ready for a long grind.

The best place for farming these is still the southeastern coast of the Swamp of Sorrows.
You can kill about 30-35 murlocs in 3-4 minutes, giving you 15-20 clams. The respawn is 3-4 minutes as well, so you can keep going uninterrupted; if you are sick enough to do it for an hour, you should be able to loot 200 clams at the very least.

There is another cave aswell in blasted lands. Right on the red reaches. I farmed last night between my ques for battle grounds. Stopped at 200 clams maybe an hour and half of actually farming. Now you can either stay on the reaches and kill groups of 2-6 or go in the cave. There is a quest to take you into the cave so I stayed outside. The clams that drop btw are big mouth clam off bloodwash enemy's. Couple cool things about this spot. 1. You get tons of runecloth to sell or make as you please, I had 18 stacks after 200. 2. Spawn rates are very fast, due to it being a questing area. 3. Most ally or horde won't bother to come hank you cause its over the hill from the big portal. 4. You get quest items to turn in for a junk bag, also a rare spawns on an alter, she gives you a blue won to get a blue bag, chance of epic items, easy transmog money. n the time I was there she spawned twice. 5. Far as pearls I got 4 golden pearls 10 black pearls 4 iridescent pearls and 5 small lustrous pearls (some math: 200 clams/23 pearls= 8.695 per kill(average drop rate in that area on the enemy's your killing is 62%(think the coin flippers are higher then wow head says but none the less the average is 62% not counting the rare which is low but who cares about her till she's spawns: 200 clams/.62 (are % to decimal)=322.58 kills. Now the average of kills per pearl is 322.58kills/23 pearls= 14.02 kills per pearl.) (Thank you tudogs for the help). So many different pearls instead of one. Far as drop rates go tidal strider are the best for the clam, but there's a quest for them there, plus very few of them. Also there's some in azshara n swamp of sorrows but again very few. Best place is blasted lands. Good money to be made in this spot! Happy faimng!

(For Mages with a portal to theramore), there is a near 100% drop-rate of big-mouth clams from the Strashaz Hydras, to be found on Alcaz island in the north of Dustwallow Marsh.

I needed the two Golden Pearls required to make the Mooncloth Robe.

I got 50 Big Mouth Clam, which contained:
50 Zesty Clam Meat
3 Iridescent Pearl
2 Black Pearl
2 Golden Pearl
2 Small Lustrous Pearl

While farming the clams, I also got:
77 Runecloth
13 Raw Spinefin Halibut
2 Imperfect Draenethyst Fragment
As well as a blacksmithing pattern and a random green BoE chest.

I went to Swamp of Sorrows and killed every crab, turtle, and Murlock I could find along the coast (no swimming) and in 12 minutes I came away with 24 Big-Mouth Clams. My character was level 100 so I could 1-shot things but walked the whole coast and it was very easy.

On my 2nd pass I looted 26 clams in 13 minutes. I say Swamp of Sorrows is the place!

The Red Reaches in the Blasted Lands are still the best for these. I used a 110 character with one of the "wisp speed" legendaries, The Sentinel's Eternal Refuge. RIght click to kill, right click to loot, left and right click to run to the next. Rinse and repeat. I got 70 clams in 20 minutes, and I wasn't even going as fast as possible. Just work your way down the beach and when you run out of naga, they'll be respawning at the other end.
