this fish can be fished in the lave pools in deepholm area. particularly around deathwings fall is where i have been getting them. they do not drop in pools right now but just fishin in the lava will bring them too you . happy fishing

The higher your fishing skill is, the more Lavascale you will catch. My skill was 505-510 + 羽状诱饵 (100 skill) = 610

I also fished at the spot mentioned above in Deathwing's Fall, and my Lavascale catches were approximately 2x what my sharptooth catches were. When my fishing lure wore off, the amount of Sharptooth catches sharply increased to exceed my Lavascale, not double, but around 1.5x more. Put a lure back on, and Lavascale caught up and exceeded Sharptooth again, though not quite double the second time but close, around 1.75x more. Sorry I don't have exact numbers.

TL;DR - USE A LURE!

I did not see any mention of this while quickly skimming through the comments.

To fish this in Uldum, you want to AVOID fishing schools/pools.

There are no lavascale pools and fishing through couple dozen schools yielded zero lavascale catfish. However, my first cast in a non-school got me the fish.

To be more clear, Lavascale catfish can be fished in the open ocean in Uldum. I fish out on the south east coast in the Ocean and I get Fathom Eel, Deepsea Sagefish and Lavascale cast fish from the open water, no pools.

I usually fish these in Uldum, and I've noticed drastically different drop rates several different times I've been fishing.
Sometimes I'll get them frequently about 1 in every 2 or 3 casts (persistant for my entire period fishing there) and other expeditions, I'm barely catching 1 catfish every 10 casts (which takes absolutely forever to get 80 catfish).

Anyone suspect the drop rate flucates on the time of day, or simply day/night? Or do the RNG gods just sometimes hate me?

I'll start tracking catch rates and timeframes in the future.

From all the fishing reports I've seen, the rate of catch is the same between Uldum and Deepholm: about 30%. If you're seeing better numbers in one place, fish there for longer and it will even out. Only luck is making it seem like a better location.

Leveling my fishing in 1 of the lava pools in Deepholm. Went from skill ~150-300 catching junk and these fish. Made almost 800g so far off 4 stacks. Given it was done along 3 days for a total of 5 hours of fishing, those are still good numbers!

I make quite a lucrative business from these seeing as, nobody else on my server seems to fish them, every day or so a raid group buys like 6 stacks, it is VERY easy money.

In Uldum, you Can stand in a position where you catch this fish and also the deepsea sagefish. Fishing catches are not determined by where you are standing, but by where the bobber lands. However, the deepsea sagefish and the lavascale catfish don't appear to be fished from the same waters. So depending on where the bobber lands you are fishing from two different loot tables. I was standing at 59.2, 86.2 in the Vir'naal River Delta down south Uldum.

Edit: There are now schools of deepsea sagefish, which is a much better way to fish for those.

My perception is that fishing in Deathwing's Fall for this fish before noon (server time) is one of the worst times to try to catch it.

Okay, so I have something to share with the group. I know a lot of people are saying 深岩之洲 is the best place to fish for these, but in my opinion it isn't ideal. As to why that is, I can list a few reasons.

1) You are in an open PVP area, and could be ganked while fishing. Dunno if you have tried, but defending yourself against an angry mob of the other faction whilst wielding a fishing pole can be rather tricky.

2) Deepholm contains 白色洞穴鱼 which are popular for alchemists, but have very limited uses, so these can be difficult to sell the quantities you'll be fishing up quickly.

3) If you are interrupted and have to step away from your fishing, you have to leave or get to a safe place.

Where do I fish? The instance of the 托维尔失落之城! Fishing here offers me several advantages:

1) I can fish in complete peace once past the initial trash mobs guarding the way to the water.

2) I can continue fishing while using my 移动银行 guild vault or 移动邮箱 mobile mailbox to keep my inventory clean and tidy. I could conceivably even log out and log back in to continue fishing at a later time.

3) There are no enemy players that can bother me, and I can avoid mob fights by staying away from them.

So far I spent an hour fishing. Here are my totals after an hour:

利齿: 109 (50.5%)
熔鳞鲶鱼: 68 (31.5%)
黑腹泥鱼: 28 (13.0%)
动燃之水: 11 (5.1%)

Totals: 216 / Skill: 660 / Total: 100%

For my server which is an RP PVP server, Volatile Water is *very* valuable, moreso than Fire, Earth or Life. It sells regularly on the auction house for about 16g each, sometimes more.

Blackbelly Mudfish are extremely valuable for Protection Warriors. The two recipes using the fish create 黑腹鱼寿司 and 蘑菇烩泥鱼. These alone sell for 3x the value of the fish unprepared (3-4g each) and sell rather fast in stacks of 5, 10 and 20.

Because of the viability of the Mudfish over the less sought-after Cavefish, I believe this makes fishing in the instance of the Lost City worthwhile. There are plenty of benefits and if you have a nice surround sound setup on and a big screen monitor, you can crank up the volume and fish in the peace and tranquility of a jungle fishing spot.

This is an Open water fish. (Yes, how annoying)

I needed 2 stacks of these to make some feasts for my raiding runs. I took some of the advice above and went to the Crimson Expanse on the eastern sides of Deepholm (Yes it's marked on your map).

I picked a mob-free spot where the three rivers meet, slapped a +75 lure (Weather-beaten Fishing Hat) on my Arcanite fishing pole (altogether 650 fishing), dropped a lawn chair and a keg and started fishing.

32 minutes later:

Lavascale catfish: (40) 31.25%
Sharptooth: (67) 52.34%
Albino Catfish: (15) 11.72%
Volatile water: (6) 4.69%
Junk: (0) 0.00%

Got bored of fishing and took my umbrella and keg to to kill Gnomes instead.

Best ways to fish in Tol'vir would be...

to queue for the instance specifically, regular or heroic, then fish afterwards
Go into the REGULAR Tol'vir instance as a stealth class and...Win...
Go into the REGULAR Tol'vir instance as a hunter and go along the left side and feign until you get to the water after the first boss (can jump on the wall and fish the middle area) or keep going to the second boss
Go into the REGULAR Tol'vir instance as a shaman (i suggest mounting) and go along the left side and ahnk after dying past the first boss in the bridge to his left (have to be geared enough to make it that far though). If you keep getting dazed, hex the myrmidon first, then make your run for it.
Invis pots. You can get past the first group to the left and hide in an area to the left of the captain and wait for cooldowns. Once he pats all the way toward the entrance, run past him toward the next group by the first boss. Invis Pot and run onto the bridge. You can then mount and jump up on the wall and into the water without pulling the next group. Swim around until you find a nice spot to fish.

Almost any class could possibly get lucky with this (if mounted and doesn't get dazed by the myrmidon) and be able to jump on the wall before dying, which will reset the mobs and you'll be free to fish.

After 1 hour of fishing in the instance:

93 Sharptooth 45.1%
65 Lavascale 31.5%
36 Blackbelly Mudfish 17.4%
4 Volatile Water 1.9%
8 random greys 3.8%

Total of 206 catches at 630 fishing

I found that Deepholm (Deathwing's Fall) has a better/faster drop rate of Catfish than anywhere in Uldum.

Just finished fishing for 40 min in the Crimson Expanse in Deepholm, here are the results:

Sharptooth (53) 48.2%
Lavascale Catfish (36) 32.7%
Albino Catfish (21) 19.1%

My fishing skill is 525, I had the Strong Fishing Pole (+5 skill) and a Weather Beaten Hat (+5 skill) with the hat's +75 lure buff on for a total fishing skill of 610. As mentioned I just went to a place with no mobs, and fished into the open water (not pools) without interruption.

I was fishing up some Lavascale Catfish for my Seafood Feasts for raid, and created a fire to see if I had a enough for a stack of feasts yet. Continued fishing for some more lavascale catfish and noticed the cooking fire increased my catches of my wanted fishes dramatically. So I performed a little test, each test was done in 10 minute increments between 11:45pm-12:15am Server Time. With my fishing hat, mastercraft kalu'ak fishing pole, an aquadynamic fish attractor, and the buff from fire, I got:

I found a decent fishing spot for these on a boat near Tol'vir where you can sometimes catch Fathom Eels (not often but yeah.)

Directly south of the Lost City of Tol'vir where the rivers spread out into the ocean there is a boat on the coast that you can fish open water in and not get aggro from any of the surrounding mobs. (Occasionally I would get some aggro so I stood on the wall of the boat and it seemed to work well.)

I know some people say not to fish for these in Deepholm, but I have found that fishing in the crimson expanse pretty worthwhile. If you stand against the cliff walls, you don't get aggro from any of the surrounding mobs, and on my realm at least I find that it is fairly quiet in deepholm, and I have never been attacked while fishing. I can't remember the percentage of my fishing, but I will get a minimum of 60 lavascale in an hour, and that has been consistant every time. Good luck everyone

You don't have to actually go into the Lost City of Tol'vir to fish....just fly over the lost city and land on the bank and fish away! In less than five minutes I had 8 lavascale......10 Sharptooth and a handful of the mudfish.

I needed to catch some of these for a friend to use in a goblin BBQ recipe to buy his cogs. We weren't sure if either of us had a high enough skill to catch it, and I didn't find anything about it in these comments so I thought I'd share my experience

Fishing Skill: 289 (probably a few lower when I started) + 25 fishing pole + 125 lure (Heat-Treated Spinning Lure)

I fished in the lava in Deepholm.

I caught 4 of these in about 10 mins, got some junk, and some other fish as well... but it seems with a few fishing buffs your actual skill doesn't have to be all that high.

With patch 4.3, it seems you are no longer able to catch 熔鳞鲶鱼 from the coast in Uldum. This possibly could have changed from the previous patch, I don't know, because I never fished back then. I spent 30 minutes fishing and the only fish that are caught here were 深水鳗鱼 and 赤鼻鱼. This is now a bad place to fish open water as the only useful fish here is 深水鳗鱼 which can be fished in pools. Fishing the river in Uldum gives you 熔鳞鲶鱼 and at least a semi-useful fish, 黑腹泥鱼. The Mudfish are extremely cheap and unwanted on my server, but I'm sure it could be different elsewhere. To farm the 熔鳞鲶鱼, I recommend going to Tol'vir or Ramkahen on the river. The ocean is only useful for fishing pools of Fathom Eel.

I imagine Blizzard changed this because this would make fishing open waters in Uldum extremely profitable. Getting 深水鳗鱼 and 熔鳞鲶鱼, two of the three required fish for the feast, in one area? Oh yea! Let the gold start flowing in!

Dear Blizzard,

The droprate for this is terrible. Apparently other people on here have had better than luck than me, because after 250 casts I'm catching about 24% lavascale outside Ramkahen. What I don't understand is you've has said they were trying to get away from people having to farm mats all day just to raid, but this is a blatant disregard to that. It's bad enough that you need 6 total fish just to make one feast, but cmon, cut us a break and let them all come from schools at least!

Roll a hunter, get a turtle,
you are now past the first hurdle,
make your way to zul'gurub
so that you can solo gub,
take a left, once inside,
cross the falls with a stride,
camo past all the stuff,
make sure to grab the icy buff,
mount your way to gub's spawn,
your gettin' really close now mon',
hunter's mark, shoot it, feign,
misdirect, now show him pain,
when he enrages pop shell shield,
make sure to keep your turtle healed,
when he's dead collect the loot,
other drops most likely moot,
open the barrel, make some wishes,
hope you got your lavascale fishes.

Just fished in Uldum for these wonderful fish. Found a spot at 50.73 37.43 - it's a docked ship. I fished as close to it as I could and fished up what I needed in no time. Definitely a place I'll fish at for the Lavascale Catfish again! Enjoy!

If you are attempting to hook a Lavascale Catfish in 8.3 in Uldum, you may want to talk to Zidormi to go back to the Cataclysm version of the zone.

Frienldy advice! Be sure to swap the map of Uldum to the Cataclysm's Uldum with Zidormi. This fish can't be fished from the Uldum with the vision assaults. (at least, not that i'm aware of)

If you are just fishing up the lavascale catfish to level Cata cooking, PLEASE consider blackbelly Sushi recipe instead. Plentiful pools in Uldum.
Would have saved myself HOURS if I only paid better attention to the recipe ingredients. : \

If you’re doing this in 2024, talk to Zidorami in Ramkahen and have her time travel you to cataclysm. I was not catching the lavafish in “standard” time.
