The item IDs this item is between, Timeless Beads of Eternos one up and Competitor's Tabard one down, suggest that the item was created in the files as early as patch 2.4.3 in August 2008. That its item level is as low as 157 suggest it's itemized as a Burning Crusade item rather than WOTLK. If you add the fact that it requires level 80 to that, then it's pretty obvious it never was intended for player use. 157 is one item level higher than the Twin Glaives of Azzinoth, both of those are 156.

EDIT: To make things clearer, Cataclysm apparently updated this item. It used to be item level 157, it's now 200 for some reason (wouldn't 290 or something make more sense in a WOTLK canvas?).

Icecrown Citadel, that spoiler from Youtube and the Cataclysm beta loading screen were merely setbacks!

Tirion picked up Frostmorune, smashed the ice, took the crown off Bolvar's head, absorbed Bolvar's soul into Frostmourne, smashed Frostmourne, picked up Bolvar's soul shard and replaced the crystal of pure light with it on The Ashbringer, put the crystal of pure light in his backpocket, summoned a few ghouls to eat Bolvar's corpse, killed the ghouls with the new Ashbringer, then he put the crown on his head and sat on the throne with the new sword, Ashmourne. (Can now absorb souls and smite the living!)

I also linked this baby back in 3.3.5 and i took a screenshot: the stats on the sword are a bit different than the WH version. The only resemblence is the "Equip: The wielder of Frostmourne will become the new Lich King" part.

Sorry to disappoint but it's not.

This was originally an item that was posted at Blizzcon (see screenshots and all links posted around the page). The item is -not- obtainable ingame and never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, will be. It'd be stupid if multiple people could get the weapon. If it ever were to be released it'd be 1 person per realm (No, not 1 person per faction, or 1 person in the World, though that'd work better). Just imagine.. a Gnome 80 DK with Frostmourne as the Lich King. /sigh.

The item has been remade countless times on private servers, and on the (insert name of that specific site here, don't think I'm allowed to.) site where private server owners create their items, there have been over 200,000 re-creations of Frostmourne, seeing as the M2 (Model) is in the game data files, there is also a model in the data files of the Death Knight quest sword (Yeah that.. blue one with the runes 'n stuff) with the Frostmourne skin slapped onto it, with the icon of a staff.

If this item were ever to be in the game, it:

1. Would not have a meta socket (That's just.. silly)
2. The quote probably wouldn't be one of those cheesey references from some movie or other game/book/TV show, it'd be the actual curse. "Whomsoever takes up this blade, shall wield power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit.". It'd be an eyesore for alot of people with a stupid quote like Hail to the King, baby! on it.
3. The icon would be different, Please, the Icon looks NOTHING like Frostmourne, go wowhead the item Barovian Family Sword, that is the icon originally used for Frostmourne back in WarCraft 3. It'd be that instead of this (which will be used for another item I already posted on.)
4. The effect would be much like Andonisus, where it would slowly eat your soul away (turning your hair grey and your skin into a DK skin, would be pretty sick, if it wasn't a DK-only item)
5. You'd have full control over the Scourge, OP for PvP/PvE much?
6. You'd probably have the chanting like the Corrupted Ashbringer.
7. Item level would of been higher
8. Damage would of been higher
9. Probably have sockets (like Shadowmourne did)
10. Would be Legendary, not Artifact/Heirloom.
11. Probably alot more I'm not thinking of

To Comipiaso, actually Ner'Zhul spoke through Frostmourne throughout WarCraft 3, once he took up Frostmourne, he could control the scourge, so he was technically the Lich King before and after the Merging.

Worn by the lichking(yes npcs DO actually have equipped armor contrary to unbased popular belief, it is more than just their graphical skins). What is interesting is this is another meta socket, which means the lichking gets two metas :O that is some overpowered stuff right there, I can only imagine the possibilities(and also why his damage output and defense is so high).

Please excuse my ignorance, as I am not yet fully acquainted with many of the aspects of WoW - but just what is the point of an item that cannot and will not ever be available to players?
Is it part of the background story, e.g. can we expect a major NPC Boss to turn up with it later as part of the continuing storyline? Or is it just a Blizzard joke?

Sorry to point this out, but Artifact > Legendary; Heirlooms and Artifacts are different things, they just share the same colour; no Artifacts have been released ingame (yet)

Actually, not true. A year or so back a players account was hacked, and when blizz restored that person's characters they mailed him an artifact called Martin's Fury. It was a shirt with a use efect of "instantly kills all enemys within 50 yards" or something like that. And it had 100 charges to it.

The player sold this item to someone on his server, and that player used it to kill Yog'saron on heroic mode instantly, when Ulduar was still new content. In doing so, however his account was band. So there has been at least one case of an artifact in the game. However I'm unable to find the item in the wowhead data base to link it so I'd asume blizz removed it from the game.

Edit: Found it Though it apears they've altered it a bit. But if you read the original posts on it, it'll give a bit more details. And it WAS originaly an artifact.

Muradin was a casualty of this awful war. But hopefully, his sacrifice would be the last. Arthas got to his feet and took unsteady steps toward the radiant weapon, his hand, still wet with the blood of his friend, outstretched and trembling. It closed on the shaft and his fingers curled around it, fitting it perfectly, as if one was made for the other.

Cold shot through him, shivering up his arms, spreading over his body and into his heart. It was painful for only a moment and he knew a hint of alarm, and then suddenly it as all right. It was all right; Frostmourne was his and he was its, and its voice was speaking, whispering, caressing inside his mind as if it had always been there.

With a cry of joy, he lifted the weapon, gazing at it in wonder and fierce pride. He would make things right-- he, Arthas Menethril, and the glorious Frostmourne that was now as much a part of him as his mind or his heart or his breath, and he listened intently to the secrets it revealed.

This item was only added to the game because when Tirion shatters frostmourne, it visually splits into fragments. You can find the fragments, as weapons, on wowhead. The server script switching this weapon model with the other one, similar to what happens when Tirion breaks out of his ice cube. Note the two items "Ashbringer" and "Ashbringer (Extra Effect)"

The Helm of Domination (lichkings crown) controls the Undead aka makes you the lich king. Frostmourn, however, Steals souls. So when you are killed by Frostmourn your soul is adsorbed into the sword, While your body is resurrected by the Helm of Domination. When you loose your soul your memories go with it. When your body is resurrected to become a deathknight, your own essence is not there. its stored within the sword.

The reason that Frostmourne is not obtainable is because Frostmourne literally consumes your soul, and controls you. What do you think corrupted Arthas? Be glad this item isn't obtainable. You would equip it, and lose your character to it. To free your soul from Frostmournes grip you must either get 1 mile away from it (Impossible, because it controls you), or Frostmourne must be destroyed. It would have been interesting if Blizzard released the item, and made it MC you eternally. The only escape would be having your guild destroy the sword by fighting you as the new Lich King.

For anyone looking for some transmog similars, the 2H sword Demonslayer shares a very similar sillouhette (and its item icon is literally Frostmourne), though it has no runes and is more navy than silver. The 1H sword Slayer of The Lifeless, and its updated models The Devouring Cold (LFR is most color accurate) are a recreation of a South Park WoW joke that referenced Frostmourne.
