That key opens a portal in Underbelly (Dalaran) which you can use to port yourself to another opened portal.

So where exactly is this "Alchemist's Lair"? i purchased the key for it, used it, but it has done nothing. i've also been all over the Underbelly, & can see nothing resembling an Alchemist's Lair.

The earlier comment by Alec2908 says the key "will set your "spawnpoint" when you jump into the well you will end up in the Alchemists' Lair in the Underbelly." Only when i jumped in the well after purchasing/using the key, i was simply dumped at the end of the corridor the well empties into, essentially simply "dropping" to the ground under the well.

So the question that hasn't been answered that I think is most important is whether or not these are permanent. I bought all of the keys at once just to see if they would wear off sooner or later. I'm at 8 hours and they're still all there. I'll update more as time passes.
