How to Play Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Fire Mage is a specialization that relies on cooldowns and burst to deal damage. The Fire Mage playstyle in Dragonflight pre-patch consists of heavy damage windows during
燃烧
and
能量符文
to deal loads of damage and in-between phases where you are building
太阳之王的祝福
and using
薪火
to make
燃烧
come back quicker. As a Fire Mage you always want to ensure that you are lining up your cooldowns well, which means that you will often have to think ahead and plan so that things line up well. Having both
太阳之王的祝福
and
火焰冲撞
means that you will often need to complete hard-cast
炎爆术
as this specialization.
How Different Does Fire Mage Feel in the Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Compared to Shadowlands, Fire is almost identical in prepatch. The biggest differences are just in the way of stacking previously un-stackable talents like
火焰冲撞
and
薪火
, or
纵火者
and
灼烧之触
. One big change of note is that AoE spells like
烈焰风暴
are now possible to opt out of, which make room for other more single target oriented talents.
Rotationally, Fire Mage is the same as it was with a couple added variables and slight adjustments from the new talent options. The biggest benefit the spec's gameplay with the new talent system is probably
时霎扭曲
, which gives Fire Mage another
嗜血
cooldown on demand, so long as the group has already used
嗜血
. Due to tuning however, it is entirely possible that we skip
时霎扭曲
in favor of
时间紊乱
in many situations.
浮冰
is a good alternative for
闪光术
when the distance traveled is unimportant.
浮冰
works wonders with
火焰冲撞
and
太阳之王的祝福
but the decision between the two is mostly a matter of preference.

How Strong is Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Fire mage has a strong showing when it comes to burst damage, survivability, and passive cleave. Fire is very well equipped for fights with a tough last phase where you want to burn the boss. When it comes to AoE, Fire has the tools it has now and more so it will likely also do well.
Overall, Fire is getting better at doing the things it is already good at.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Fire Mages are at their best in AoE or single target. If targets are stacked,

can make quick work of them. They also have cleave damage while not losing anything in single target due to
Ignite
spread. They are the most mobile of all three Mage specs, due to having the most instant casts and
Scorch
. They also have excellent execute damage with
Searing Touch
and a second life with
Cauterize
, making them very desirable for some raid encounters. Mages in general are very mobile and hard to kill.

Major Talent Changes for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Dragonflight is revamping how talents work in WoW, replacing the old talent system introduced in Mists of Pandaria, with a new talent tree featuring many more options.

When it comes to class talents, Fire Mage has a lot of interesting options depending on the situation. Many new utility talents are present to mix things up, like

. On the Fire side, the new talents are mostly locked into one main spec, revolving around

, for all modes of play.

is also available to Fire now, which is really nice for hardcasts.
Note: In prepatch, Legendary effects and talents do not stack. This means that we will opt to take

in our talents while we have

equipped as a Legendary for most situations.

Best Talent Builds for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-patch
For the class tree, most of the talents are situational and will change depending on preference and the situation. On the Fire side, you mostly play talents that help
太阳之王的祝福
(via legendary) and pick up single target talents. For AoE, you remove less impactful single target talents in favor of AoE ones, as needed.

Best Rotation for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
The standard rotation for Fire Mages outside of cooldowns is very simple and straightforward, but more information using various talent setups, cooldowns, and other advanced tips can be found on the Fire Mage Rotation Guide.
Cooldowns:
Use cooldowns like
燃烧
as often as possible.
With
太阳之王的祝福
, use
能量符文
before hardcasting
炎爆术
.
In
燃烧
, consume
炽热连击
with
炎爆术
and alternate between
火焰冲击
and
凤凰烈焰
to generate
炽热连击
.
Try to bank charges of
火焰冲击
and
凤凰烈焰
going into each
燃烧
. If you run out of charges, use
灼烧
instead.

Cast

until a Critical Strike procs

Best Stats for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Fire Mages primarily favor
Intellect
and
Haste
. The value of Mastery is tied to how often you are able to spread

to other targets and the cooldown of

An oversimplified starting point is:
Haste
Mastery
Versatility
Critical Strike
Haste > Versatility = Mastery > Critical Strike
Although Mastery is a decent stat for single target damage, it gains value for cleave encounters. Since secondary stats also fluctuate depending on your other secondary stats, building a large wardrobe of gearsets is a good idea. Mages using

should favor Haste and Mastery on gear since so much Versatility is coming from these two items.
Best Legendaries for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
Generally the Fire Mage Legendary is

is also a talent. These do not stack.

is our best option for Single Target. Decent damage and predictable, but requires a bit of planning to make the most out of every

. There is no special synergy required such as

or Venthyr to make the legendary work.

has many interactions with the playstyle specifically. I recommend reading more about it here.

grants a Critical strike damage increase after casting a spell of each school that lasts 20 seconds, on a 30 second cooldown. Activate on cooldown unless
燃烧
is coming off cooldown soon.
寒冰箭
and
冰霜新星
are the best spells to use to trigger the Frost component. Keep in mind that the
能量符文
that auto-casts with
燃烧
also counts. You can also use
闪光术
,
法术反制
, or
魔爆术
. This is a very strong AoE legendary.
Best Covenant for Fire Mage in Dragonflight Pre-Patch
The best covenant for Fire Mage in
Raid
varies between Venthyr and Night Fae. The best covenant for Fire Mage in
M+
is Night Fae.
We are no longer confined to just one covenant. Because of this, I recommend Venthyr for bosses where the additional
燃烧
cooldown has less of an effect and the other Venthyr benefits such as
癫狂公爵之茶
make Venthyr preferable. Use Night Fae for fights with AoE or when you need a shorter
燃烧
cooldown.
变易幻能
is also a talent now, which means that Venthyr has access to it.
Venthyr is slightly ahead in general. Since raid bosses have variable push timings and fight lengths depending on your group's overall damage per second and strategy, there isn't a set "best" covenant for all situations.
Night Fae has an edge if fight times favor shorter
燃烧
timings, or if there is AoE. The main benefit is
变易幻能
, which provides cooldown reduction. This is no longer specific to Night Fae, but it comes at the cost of other capstone talents.

In pre-patch and even on beta flamestrike and flamepatch hit like a wet noodle. Pls use Master of flame for trash packs in m+. Spreading ignite does way more damage and tbh love playing this way instead of spamming flamestrikes. :)
