With
儿童周
underway, some players will be wanting to check this holiday off their list.
儿童周
brings the meta's most hated achievement:
硬汉学校
. Wowhead has a short and sweet guide to help you get this done with the minimum of fuss. Let's go from the easiest to the hardest. If you're looking for a full guide to all the achievements and rewards from this holiday, check out
Wowhead's Children's Week Guide
.
As of 2022, School of Hard Knocks is no longer required to complete
为了孩子
and
千奇百怪的漫长旅行
; it is purely an optional activity.
This guide assumes you have little or no PvP experience, and we've got tips for avoiding PvP if you're a die-hard PvE-focused player who just wants to get this done and never enter a Battleground again.
First up,
always
have your orphan out in these battlegrounds. No exceptions - you wouldn't want to complete one of these objectives only to realize your orphan wasn't there to see it and your hard work was for nothing.
Assault a flag in Arathi Basin
This achievement can be completed very quickly and straightforwardly with a little nouse and speed. To assault a flag, you will need to be the first to reach one of the bases at the start of the match, or to assault a base later on in the match.
The view to the right is the start of the game from the Alliance end of the battleground, the
Horde end
looks much the same. Note the glowing flag in the foreground - that is your target, or one like it. Your tactic is simple, at first: mount up, be by the gate pointing at the base you plan to assault, and running in that direction. As the gate begins to open, you will pass through it, run directly in a straight line to the base you plan to assault, ignoring the roads but dodging any obstacles.
Hover your mouse over the flag, and as soon as the cogwheel turns from grey to gold, click it. The cast to capture a flag takes a short while, 6.5 seconds in
阿拉希盆地
, and the first person to complete it will have assaulted a flag. Obviously, movement will break the cast, so keep still! There are a couple of tricks you can pull to prevent others from capturing, if you are feeling particularly dastardly. Paladinss can cast
保护祝福
on a team-mate, which will prevent them from capturing, or a friendly priest can
信仰飞跃
another would-be capturer to ensure your success. Don't be surprised if this doesn't win you any friends - it's pretty shady behavior.
But, if you don't manage to be the first to the flag, all is far from lost. The flags will change hands fairly regularly throughout the match, so be around when there are big team fights, or furtively sneak around to try to capture undefended flags. All you need to do is to be the first one to complete the cast on a flag that is being captured.
There's a map to indicate the locations of the bases in
阿拉希盆地
below, the red and the blue ones indicate bases that will generally go straight to the Horde or Alliance with no contest at the start - simply because they're right by the bases! If you don't succeed with those, and indeed, it's likely that they will be prime targets for players wishing to complete the achievement, then you should default to either Lumber Mill or Gold Mine. Thanks to the location of the two bridges, Alliance may be able to get to Gold Mine more quickly and Horde to Lumber Mill more quickly. This is simply because you can cut across land in a straight line without water getting in your way. If you are a
死亡骑士
or a
萨满祭司
, or have water walking from another source, there will be no difference.
If you're trying to avoid doing PvP as part of the achievement, then definitely avoid the Blacksmith. This is the strategic center of the map, and usually the base that sees the most PvP action. Instead, you'd do well to head to Gold Mine or Lumber Mill, bearing in mind that there is a slight strategic advantage to taking Lumber Mill over Gold Mine, thanks to its elevation, so it's possible there'll be more fighting to be done there. That means, though, that Lumber Mill will likely change hands more often, so could be a good spot to assault the flag later in the match.
Assault a Tower in Alterac Valley
If you've read the above section on
阿拉希盆地
, this is little different. In Alterac Valley, there are several towers, all of which have a flag on the top level. Just like in
阿拉希盆地
, you'll need to be the first person to complete the cast of
正在夺取
on a flag at the top of a tower. Unlike Arathi Basin, there is less clarity on which towers are the best to go for, and depending on your faction and region, you may have a harder or easier time getting this done.
The map above indicates the towers. The Alliance begin at the top of the map, Horde at the bottom. Horde will need to capture Alliance towers, as indicated, and Alliance will need to capture Horde towers. Unlike in
阿拉希盆地
, the towers do not change hands regularly as an inherent part of the game. Instead, the flags are destroyed after the towers have been in conflict for four minutes.
During Children's Week on some regions, efforts will be made to ensure that they do change hands, but most regions are not so kind. It is reasonable to expect, therefore, that each tower can only be captured once. That being said, everyone will be heading for the first tower they can reach -- the ones in the center of the map. It may, therefore, be profitable to head directly for the second tower, and straight to the third and fourth towers if you are too late there.
Within the game itself, the towers and flag locations are as follows. Remember when looking at the below that you will be capturing the opposing faction's towers.
Horde Tower Appearance and Flag Location
Alliance Tower Appearance and Flag Location
It should be pretty clear to see that Horde have a far easier time reaching the Alliance flag than Alliance have reaching the Horde flag. The Horde towers are taller, and falling off the external ramps is very easily done indeed. It may well be advisable to practice climbing the ramps, if you can. Horde assaulting Alliance flags should have a far easier time, as all they need to do is find the door, ascend the internal staircase and turn around to see the flag behind them. Furthermore, the usual Alliance strategy does not involve defending their towers. However, should the Alliance decide to defend, their flag is far more defensible than the Horde ones. Once you have ascended the tower it is much the same as above, click the flag, and complete the 6.5 second
正在夺取
cast to assault it. The same shady tricks as we mentioned for
阿拉希盆地
work here, too, only 39 people will be really angry with you rather than 14.
Top Tip:
Make sure you are right at the door at the start, and if you have a blink, a rocket jump, displacer beast, ghost wolf, disengage (turn away from the door), or any way to get out of the door quickly and therefore be mounted before the rest, use it. You cannot mount until you have left your starting cave.
Capture the Flag in Eye of the Storm
We've listed this one as harder than the others, as it will likely require you to engage in some actual PvP. The flag in
风暴之眼
is picked up in exactly the same way as the flags are captured in
阿拉希盆地
and
奥特兰克山谷
. You need to run to the flag, and click on it, then the cast will eventually complete. Unlike in
阿拉希盆地
and
奥特兰克山谷
, your task is far from over.
Once you have the flag on your back, you will need to run to one of the bases
held by your team
and onto the disc on the ground in order to capture it. Said disc can be seen in the image on the left - you'll notice that the flag came off my back onto the disc as it was captured. It is not enough to bring the flag to the base, you do need to locate this disc and run the flag across it.
Just as before, the two blue bases shown below are the ones generally captured first by Alliance, and the red are the ones usually captured first by the Horde. As you can see, the Alliance begin at the top, the Horde begin at the bottom. The flag is right in the middle of the map, on a narrow bridge. So, once you have the flag, you should be running straight towards a base that your faction holds.
Opening your Zone Map (Shift+M by default) can be very helpful in determining which bases are held. Only solid colored bases are safe, and you should ideally be looking for a clear base to return your flag - one where there's no combat.
If your team holds no bases you can't capture flags
, so help other players to capture bases if you fall behind. Bases capture just by having more of one faction alive inside it than of the other.
In this battleground, leaning on the kindness of strangers seems to work better than in others. Letting others capture the flag after you have your achievement objective completed is good etiquette, others may do it too. What's more, defending a held base and asking players without their orphan out whether you can capture a flag that they are bringing to you can work. That aside, fight in the middle and do your best to take the flag. Remember that only spells hitting you will break the capture cast, so if you aren't being focused you can take it in the middle of a battle!
Top Tip:
when fighting on the bridge in the middle, ensure you're facing along the bridge. That way when you get knocked back you won't get knocked off.
Returning a fallen flag in Warsong Gulch
This is arguably the hardest objective of the four, and one of the very best to enlist the help of your friends. Unlike the others, this doesn't relate to speed or to getting a cast time off, but it does seem from my experience to be one of the ones where people are happy to help. It's regularly been the case in my
战歌峡谷
instances during Children's week that a player from the opposing faction will come in to the flag room repeatedly and let themselves be killed repeatedly so that people can get the objective done. If you want to do that, try to target the opposing team's orphans and /cheer, or spam /wait or something along those lines. You can also pick up the flag and right-click off the buff it gives you to drop it, allowing others to return it. It may not work, but I've been the good samaritan a couple of times today and it did go pretty well - someone from the opposing faction needs to figure out what you're doing.
That said, you can't always depend on the kindness of strangers, so let's talk about how best to go about it. You're looking for a person who looks like I do in the image above, with a flag on their back. They can drop the flag, as I mentioned, but unless you get lucky they're unlikely to. Instead you'll need to kill them, and then the flag will go from being on their back to standing on the ground next to them, like in the image to the left. Once it's there, you need to be the first to click it with the cogwheel to return it to its base. Job done!
Where are you most likely to find flag carriers? Well, that varies enormously. Good places to wait include the areas just outside the opposing base, as they could travel down the ramps or through the tunnels to exit with the flag. This is likely to be an are fraught with PvP combat, though, so not ideal if you're not keen on PvPing to get these achievements done. Other than that, you can see the image below that indicates their likeliest paths across the map, they are the sides indicated because of graveyard position: you want to run towards your graveyard with the flag so that any of your team who are ressing will join you in your bid to capture it.
That being said, they could be anywhere in the middle, and ideally, you want to kill them before they get back to your base. If you get into the situation where both teams have a flag and are holding it - common in normal
战歌峡谷
battles, less common in
儿童周
- they are likely to be within their base or on the roof. Simply follow the ramps up - they're more likely to be higher up - until you find them, and communicate their location to your team. You may well need more than one of you to take them out.
战歌峡谷
in
儿童周
is a very strange battleground.
As a final plea, from a PvPer, don't let your experiences during
儿童周
allow you to have a negative impression of PvP. Children's week is not representative of those four battlegrounds in their usual state.

Very nice guide for a PvE kitty who's been off for 3 years. Here's my personal experience as a terrible, undergeared PvE DPS:
Arathi Basin:
GET THE FIRST FLAG! If you have any kind of speed buff that lets you go faster than guild perked mount speed, use it. If all the bases end up captured but you still want to try and capture a flag, follow a big group and continuously try to capture the flag while they fight (but avoid dying- come late into the fight to capture).
Alterac Valley:
FOLLOW THE GROUP! don't be dumb like me and try to recapture your own tower. nobody will help you. Don't bother to kill ranged NPCs on the towers; try and find a spot where the guard NPCs can't hit you and capture. This can be based on luck a lot, because once a tower is captured, it's unlikely you will have a chance to recapture it, so really try to be first.
Eye of the storm:
If you have any wish of doing this, your side needs to be winning/rushing the flag. There's likely going to be a million people on the arse of the flag, so it's really a spam race to see if you can get a lucky break and capture it (knockback attacks are A++ here). Bring any kind of non-mount speed (potions, talents) you can, because even if you capture the flag, you still need to run it back.
Warsong:
Easiest for me, because many people stayed around the base for the achievement. When enemies come in, communicate to your team that you want the enemy to capture the flag, then kill the enemy and spam click where the flag drops. Rinse & Repeat until you're the one to capture the flag.
TL;DR: spam the flag and pray

Probably my most disappointing experience with fellow players so far, Warson Gulch proved the breaking point...doing the battleground 8 times and not once would anyone help.....didn't do too bad for a non-pvp player, even killed a flagbearer once or twice....but had the flag snatched before my eyes, I know, it's all in the game, but it is a frustrating attempt at an achievement and basically: what the use of pursuing further world events if you know you won't complete the achievement for another year?
:(

Never mind PvP, my experiences during Children's Week left me with a negative impression of WoW and Blizzard. Don't get me wrong, I did complete the achievement, but it was not worth the frustration and stress. I would have skipped
What a Strange, Long Trip It's Been
if I had known more.
This experience combined with Blizzard's apparent indifference to those of us who want the achievement removed from the meta was one of my major reasons for quitting WoW.
If you're still interested in going after the achievement here is some information I didn't find in any
School of Hard Knocks
guides: If you're an engineer and use
nitro boosts
, you drop the flag.

Do you have to have a particular orphan out? i had my wolvar pup orphan out and did EoS and did not get credit for it!

Though late to the game and a miserable failure in most BGs, I just wanted to thank you for this in depth guide.
I finally got my violet drake in 2015 because of the help of awesome fellow Alliance players who made sure everyone in the group who had an orphan out got their BG achieves (making sure everyone got their flag returns, etc.). But most especially because of incredibly fantastic Horde players who saw I had my orphan out and rather than attack me, despite my attacking them, used in game emotes to SHOW me exactly where I needed to go, walked WITH me to that most important spot that allowed me to get my achievement.
I've never liked PVP but those players proved there can be cross faction cooperation and that things like this can be done. They are the reason I now also have a lvl 100 Horde character.
There are some very good folks in this game and that's why I keep trying for the hard stuff.

If you hate having to do this achievement towards
为了孩子
as much as I do, please let Blizzard know! In game, press the Escape key to bring up the Game Menu, then select Help, then write a complaint under Submit Suggestion. Maybe if they see how many people hate doing this achievement they will remove it from the requirements for
为了孩子
.

After several futile attempts earlier in the week to obtain the "
return a fallen flag in WSG
" portion, I tried today.
However, this time I made my objective known and asked the BG group to help me. It turned out they were more than willing to help. There was another person doing the same achievement and we both got it in turns. The group took down the EFC and let us click to return the flag. As a bonus we also won 3-0
Nice group of players. Thumbs up!

This the 2nd year I fail doing this. Why? Because of the queues.
I was waiting for over 8 HOURS for the Alterac Valley battleground!
Sadly I was stupid and decided to once again do it on the last day. So don't underestimate this achievement. Start doing this on the first day of the event! Or else you'll regret it for a year.
In all honesty, I have no idea why I'm forced to rely on 79 other players, just to get inside the battleground. I hate failing because of other people. -.-
EDIT: This year (2017), I finally got it. This time there was the battleground bonus active, which made it a lot easier to queue for the AV BG and naturally to the other BGs as well. I'm not sure if the majority of people only play PvP during the bonus event, but to me it was a relief to get it finally over.
Also, be careful while trying to capture a tower, your own allies can and will ^&*! you up. Use a neural silencer to prevent leap of faith. However it doesn't work against hand of protection from what I experienced, so yeah I had to re-queue again thanks to that #$%^er.

I don't really pvp much. I have heard several people get excited about DH being able to communicate cross faction in order to coordinate getting these done. This got me thinking about another way to make it easier. Is it possible to complete the objectives in a war games match?

Just a heads up: apparently you have to have your orphan summoned BEFORE you enter the battleground. Don't know whether this is a bug atm, but the Orcish Whistle cannot be used in pvp instances, so have it summoned beforehand! Also, in case you die your orphan is no longer by your side, so be careful :)
Edit: apparently it was a bug after all.. They have now fixed it.. We were just unlucky.

I've had parts of this meta done since 2008, and it is the School of Hard Knocks which has prevented me getting the achieve/title every single year. I admit that I really don't like PvP -- it stresses me out, and I get really tired really fast of the enormous number of &*!@s who seem to think it's super funny to steamroll and camp people who are genuinely trying to get started in PvP (I'm not looking for a kid glove treatment. I'm just looking to actually get a fair chance, and not have some loser fixate on me and literally kill me every single time I res so that I come out with no honour and a lot of rage). It's unpleasant enough during the rest of the year - during Children's Week it's total hell.
My faction server/battlegroup pretty much never wins BGs. I think I've been in...three? Maybe? that we've won. It's just a total joke, and the bg chat is full of people who are either a) 'we're gonna lose anyway, STRIP AND DANCE' and b) *FOAMS AT THE MOUTH* "I WILL MURDER YOU AND YOUR FAMILY YOU PIECE OF WORTHLESS HUMAN GARBAGE"
aaaaaand I just
no thank you
Reading the guide -- it's great. You explain things really clearly, and it's super helpful. By the end, though, I was like 'oh yeah, I remember why I don't have this yet, and why I never will'. I wish Blizz would dump it.

Whether by design of not this (2018) year's children's week coincides with the Warsong Brawl. Having three times as many flags makes it a bit easier to finish the warsong portion of the achievement.

Reworks of Arahi Basin made the achievement unobtainable. Assaulting the flag does not count towards the achievement.

As of 2019 it is currently impossible to get credit for the Arathi and Warsong portions of the achievement.
It seems the overhaul broke the achievement.
Tickets have been submitted, but meanwhile it's no use.
Eye of the Storm has been reported to work.
EDIT: Alterac is fine, as said by others. (If you manage to tag)
EDIT 2: It has been hotfixed during the night! Happy achievement hunting guys!

You know what's really cool? The fact that this requires you to do objectives in AB and WSG but doesn't count doing identical objectives in these BGs' several clones. That's super cool.

Was doing this during the current Brawl. Don't forget to resummon your orphan after you land from being launched in the air. If you go into the air at all, your orphan gets dismissed. I hadn't realized this and capped a flag without them. Then, later in the same game, some total piece of %^&* used a swapblaster on me to get the flag before I could and they didn't even have an orphan.

Its horrible. Especially now, during BFA, with que times between 30-60 min for small battlegrounds and 2-4h for epic battlegrounds. How can you complete Alterac Valley achievment, when you wait 4h to join then you need to compete with 39 players to take the flag? Its the hardest achievment to obtain so far, from what i experienced.

The trouble with this is that if you aren't familiar with PvP you get no chance to learn. Unless you hit a lucky line-up that helps you (which I never have) or fluke a flag (which got me the Arathi section of the achieve) then you have absolutely no chance to build towards success by getting incrementally better. The opposition gets easy kills off you while your own side spits out incomprehensible instructions that you can't follow on account of being dead, frozen, or in completely the wrong part of the map. And next time you do no better, because you haven't been able to try things to see what works. I actually did get quite into Ashran during its final days as I chased the faction rep and the auction house part - I was in the final battle when the server shut down on us and it closed its doors - but this is no fun at all.

Yes, this is no fun at all but I did this in a solid day of queuing for and grinding through battlegrounds. I got a flag in Arathi Basin first and got it by simply asking the group if I could capture the first flag (Stables for Alliance) and they let me. I remain deeply indebted to them. I got a tower in Alterac Valley next. I couldn’t reasonably solo a tower there so I found a group attacking a tower, rushed to top during the attack and managed the capture. Surprisingly, I got a flag in Eye of the Storm next. I hung near one of the customary Alliance bases to make sure it stayed in Alliance control, kept my eye on the center and during a period when everyone else seemed so intent on killing one another, I rushed in, picked up the flag and took it back to the base. Warsong Gulch took the longest. I could not get the kind of help the guide suggests. And so after time and time and time again, I finally managed to click and return a flag in the midst of midfield fighting. In fact most of my chances came when I hung near the opposing faction’s flag carrier as he or she tried and failed to make it through midfield. I don’t want to leave the impression that I knocked this out bang, bang, bang, bang. I didn’t. Took maybe 20 battlegrounds all together, for me mostly Warsong Gulch, but it’s doable, not enjoyable, but doable.
