This seems to be a new currency, being introduced in Patch 6.2. It is used for the upcoming shipyard in a similar manner like garrison ressources are needed for follower missions; mainly for buying and equipping ships, additionally it is also a 'cost factor' when sending your ships on missions (e.g. when you start a mission you do need to spend at least 10 units of oil to do so).

Regarding the tooltip of this item the main source of this ressource seems to be Tanaan Jungle. Players have reported to be able to loot it from several rare mobs. The new apexis dailies introduced with 6.2 which take place in Tanaan also reward Oil, for example this one. Once Wowhead updates its database a full list of quests should be found here.

For me the easier way is to do the Battle for the Iron Front quest.

It's right by the first flight you get from your Tanaan outpost. You run around killing mobs , healing allies and whacking horde flags your way to 100% . The area has tons of NPCs to help you out.

As of build 19953 this nets you 600 Oil for around an hour or so worth of grinding.

Well there is a easy way to get oil atm. Just go to Lion's Watch located in Tanaan jungle cords are 58.60. And inside of one of the buildings u will see a table (same as table in your garrison) with 2 daily quests. just pick one and finish bonus objective. And as reward you will get 2k AC and 600 oil. Reward can be changed any time cos of PTR

pretty alt unfriendly, oh well. alts can still pull in some nice rewards just from cache funded missions. obviously one key complaint is all the garrison parking and this gets people out in the world. though a bit congested in one zone.

I feel some reminiscent nostalgia when looking at this. Oil was a currency in Warcraft 2 that was used in Shipyards for crafting ships. In my perspective, Blizzard appears to be bringing back an old system that died in the second game. Of course in a different way than it was.

With the new zone acting as a vacuum for players crazed for oil, starved for new content and/or wanting to be FIFO, I gave some thought as to how someone that plays alt's might approach this Devourer of Time.

Grease Monkey Guide is NOT the same thing as the Greasemonkey trait, so if you've been storing them don't burn em up on your followers. With gold missions nerfed in 6.2, the next logical trait to take priority on Tuesday follower recruiting is Greasemonkey.

Since the Oil Missions hit our garrisons I'm averaging about (80) Oil a day per toon. If you hold off making Tanaan Jungle a part of your Alt grind for three weeks you should have no less than (1500) Oil per toon. Obviously, luck and how hard you push for a 100% mission success rate will have a say.

Personally, I'm going to wait a month and build up a surplus of Oil that'll give me some play with hit-and-miss. This will also give Felblight (the new top reagent for crafting) a chance to cool off at the Auction House.

Lastly, if you don't have a Main that you're itching to take into Tanaan, consider sending your Jewelcrafter first; there's a quest line leading to the new +75 gem stuff as detailed in the Patch 6.2 notes.

NOTE: My "Oil Missions" link doesn't seem to work, so just scroll up this page and click on it (as you probably already figured out).

Update: After one week of oil missions (no greasemonkey trait) across eleven toons I'm averaging (580) oils per toon.

Update 2: Glad I waited to build up some oil; most of my toons went through them in a weeks time. Mind you, I strictly played the garrison mission game so you may have considerably more to play with. Now that the raid gear followers are prob not top priority for most of us and the gold nerf I mentioned earlier the Greasemonkey followers are the way to go for altoholics.

Going to rest the shipyard for a week (other than building on my treasure missions for the epic shipyard). Taking your toons to Tanaan for the shipyard buffs will be a major time-sink, but it's an absolute must if you're gonna invest time in the shipyard missions.

Really hope they change the ship parts to cost oil instead of garrison resources. as it is I have heaps of oil doing almost nothing but am going out of resources fast due to having to change out ship parts

IMO I don't see Shipyards as an efficient way to farm gold as much as missions.

It's another way to enjoy the game on your main
but
to farm with alts Shipyards for gold: ain't happening, it will be work and no play.

It also too far even if you can port to it with a compass( ach: 50 missions completed missions)( that is if you have the patience to complete 50 missions on all alts....

I have noticed that my alts that do not qualify for the port (i.e., a level 3 garrison and lvl 100 toon) are all getting 3-8 oil missions per day via the garrison mission table, BUT my main that has a lvl 2 port is only getting a garrison mission for oil about once ever day or two. A week since 6.2 went live and my alts all have about 3,000-5,000 units of Oil each, gotten entirely from garrison missions, while my main has only ever gotten a total of 420 units from garrison missions. Obviously, Blizzard has designed/biased the garrison oil missions to favor those who were not "ready to go" on day of release. Which is all the more apparent by merit of the fact that I have had no one drop of Oil on my main for 2 days as of the time of the post. My advice: Don't even bother with the Iron Docks opening quest until you have 10,000 Oil "in the bank". Update: Now moving into week 4 of the 6.2 patch and I have been getting 2 Oil missions per week on my toon with the port, but averaging 12-15 per week on my 91-99 toons without a port. Definitely a strong bias demonstrated by the devs based on the assumption that we will all rush to 塔纳安丛林 and solo the dailies against the ridiculously over-powered mobs.

Very healer unfriendly, having 5 healers, with just 2 of them having a proper dps spec, doing dailies takes forever, and I'm not doing what I love, healing.

I've stopped trying to get oil on 2 alts already :(

If you're running THAT low on oil just do a single bonus mission in Tanaan, 600 oil is enough for several days at worst. Anyone who's been running them regularly has a massive oil surplus already, but even once or twice a week at worst is all you'll ever need

At this point 原油 is essentially free - there is an abundance of it, and no way to spend it on anything other than ships or naval missions. As such it's not worth the 要塞物资 to run follower missions that reward oil, and thus there is no reason to have followers with the 油猴子 trait.

Just a side-note, to the author of this page:

The Apexis Bonus Event, which is a rotating weekend holiday, has a special quest 突袭时刻 to complete 5 Apexis Objectives. Complete Draenor Assault Dailies or any of the 6.2 Apexis objectives found in Tanaan Jungle. This rewards 1500 原油.

This should be edited to show that Weekend events are now Weekly.

It would be nice to be able to create oil for your ships as my mage keeps getting her butt kicked because of poor armor, cloth armor is bad for me.

It doesn't seem like anybody has mentioned this, but if you are rich and don't feel like doing the Tanaan daily, you can get 大桶原油 from the garrison mission 恐怖动物园 and they are tradeable on the ah.

To get the table in Tanaan at Vol'mar Hold start by getting quest to get info from 3 people from Durotan (9.6,56) in The Iron Front. Its the very west of the Tanaan Jungle map. The quest is Commander in the Field.指挥官亲征！

Takes less than 10 minutes flying around if you don't get distracted killing rares.
