Indeed, this sword is a poor choice for a combat rogue. If a rogue is looking to dual-wield swords, the best choice is to take up Swordsmithing and start working up the Master Swordsmith swords, starting with Fireguard (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28425), which has the same DPS as King's Defender but better rogue stats. The subsequent Master Swordsmith swords are out of this world.

If you don't mind giving up Sword Specialization, you could get Blade of the Unrequited (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28572) or Dirge (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23555). Both daggers have much better stats for rogues than King's Defender.

Leave King's Defender for the tanks. It's clearly their sword.

Let's do our best to refrain from "this is clearly a <x> weapon" comments on this site. They're cancerous enough elsewhere.

I got one this past lock, and it's great tanking sword (and I'm actually a fan of the graphic).

As an aside, other people who have gotten it how did you do on the chess event? Last lock was the first time we stopped goofing around and only lost 2 pawns before winning, and the loot seemed much better. I've always wondered if your performance was somehow linked to drops (ala tribute runs).

Is still a better offhand than this, despite its smaller dps, for a combat sword rogue. The increase in energy regen from a 1.6 weapon to a 1.4 weapon with 5/5 combat potency is unreal. Around 60-80 extra energy per minute, not to mention offhand poison procs

Even getting a gladiator's shiv is a smarter move for a combat sword rogue than a kings defender. The offhand may lose its sword spec procs but its so much better for energy regen that the loss is not even slightly note worthy.

Seriously rogues. Dont take this sword unless the tank 100% passes on it. Its not doing you any good...(despite how good it looks). Just hold out for the spiteblade from netherspite if you want to see this gorgeous weapon model in your hands - Its the best and most obvious rogue sword (although MH) this side of serpentshrine cavern.

This sword has been buffed:

87.5dps, 182armor, 28stamina, 13 def rating and 17hit rating.

I used to wonder if Sun Eater was better, now not so much.

Between this and the Sun Eater, they're about equivelant. This offers a bit more Armor and a bit more +HIt (If you don't hit the target, you don't won't hold Aggro very well), or +Dodge (Every Warrior should really rely on Dodge...)

Sorry for being lazy and asking here instead of forums, but how do you guys compare threat generation (leaving aside avoidance/mitigation questions)?

Running a mod lilke KTM or something and then fighting a mob using some special procedure? At least from common sense that's what I'd do (if I was at home and not sitting on this old lap). I'm quite curious coz I read some opinions and .. try to double-check for myself if I would have gotten to the same result or at least fully understand how this works.

Excellent tanking weapon and extremely easy to obtain. We have had it drop for the last three weeks, and we usually will bring in subs/alts for chess since most of the rewards are meh. But king's defenders is an amazing tanking weapon, I've noticed huge amounts of threat increase in our otherwise undergeared tanks.

Its too slow for combat potency

I have to take umbrage with this statement. Forgive me.

I understand the basic rationale for objecting to a Rogue taking this weapon, though I'm of a pretty laid-back mindset in terms of loot distribution. I don't question that.

But.. seriously, exactly how many one-hand, melee-based swords do you think are out there that are faster than this? I count 17 total - that are available to players - and that's not excluding weapons that are way beyond or below Karazhan level. Furthermore, most of those are 1.5 speed.

I'm not quite certain if "too slow" was meant to be ironic, but even if it was, that statement is terribly misleading - most particularly to any Rogue of the appropriate caliber looking for a Combat Swords off-hand.

i got this on my paladin the other day for some tanking gear and through on a +40 spell damage. Now i know most of you will say its not a tanking weapon, but it doesn't matter cause it works. I tank well with it and besides during the time i got it nobody wanted it so the RL asked if i wanted and i said sure.
Paladins i recommend it, but maybe look at other options before you spend time in kara hoping it to drop

I would just like to point out that most posts are basing tanking on DPS, where that stat is almost irrelevant. Devastate is you main aggro holding ability and has a 1 second cooldown. It deals 1/2 weapon dmg +35(rank 3). So whether you are swinging a 2.60 mace, or a 1.60 sword you will still get 1/2 the weapon damage +35 every second.

ex:
I'll pit the Drakefist Hammer (Master Hammersmith step1 epic 1H mace) VS. the King's Defender. note:DPS on the Drakefist is lower than King's.

Drakefist
159-296dmg
devastate value (before modifiers): 114.5-183 dps (1/2 dmg +35)

King's Defender
98-182dmg
devastatre value (before modifiers): 84-126 dps (1/2 dmg +35)

Only a very small portion of tanking is about damage or DPS, such a small part that the values aren't given considerable thought when tanks are choosing their weapons.

one thing i do not see at all mentioned in these comments is the massive edge this weapon has over the sun eater in effective health.

182 armor on a weapon is an amazing stat and its got 5 more stam

and well dodge is nice when it works but effective health applies to every attack, and more consistent damage taken means a more predictable fight for healers

get this for the same reason you use the gladiator shield over the badges one

I received this weapon as a tankadin today. I got both the Sun eater and the pvp weapon (S1) + 40 spelldmg enchant on it.. Im now doubting what to use.. what do you guys recommendt on spelldmg? +200/300 total?

And what to use? what situations?

Kings Defender vs. Sun Eater:

King's Defender (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28749): 87.5dps 1.6 Sword 28STA +1.1%hit Tank Points:3352. Better aggro weapon. It has some mitigation, hit rating, and higher DPS. Straight white damage is important in threat generation, and this weapon provides more of it.

The Sun Eater (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29362): 83.4dps 1.6 Sword 22STA Tank Points:3995. Better mitigation weapon. Has dodge rating. Also has a cool flavor text.

Enchants:

I don't know about the new Frost enchant and Battlemaster seems sub par, but there are two nice tanking enchants:

Elitist Jerk's: The Protection Warrior

Executioner (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=42974): Provides ~65 TPS.

Mongoose (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=27984): Provides mitigation and ~12.5 TPS.

I have both weapons and use them both. I have King's Defender with Executioner, and The Sun Eater with Mongoose. They compliment each other very well and I am very happy with that setup. I also like having the option of having a weapon without Mongoose for certain encounters (e.g. Zul'Jin). Mongoose provides ~4% dodge (idk exact number), and that leads to more overpowers and spike damage on the tank during bear phase.

Being a rogue myself, this weapon has terrible DPS. Also, the bonuses are for tanking. Rogues dont require defense nor armor. Although the hit rating is a nice bonus.

One of our hunters took this sword to be hit capped last time I was in kara (all of the tanks had it or better). Listening to him tell stories of people going all nerdrage on him was a scream.

My guild has never seen it drop yet. Started doing 2 group clears per week since January. Here we are 8 months later with no drops :(

On another note, we have only seen big bad wolfe twice ever, never seen the horse mount, 1 crit scope and 1 mongoose.

Just to show how difficult such things can be when you really, really want it.

Or.... blizz might have a vendetta against us :(

Gloating:

Guild clear run tonight, started tonight on Curator.
Absolutely nothing dropped for me except badges, until THIS! so happy.

I was using http://www.wowhead.com/?item=27476, and TPS ranged from about 350 to a top of about 600. With King's Defender, went up to 550 - 900TPS. Still gearing up, but this 50% gain in threat is huge. I already had NO problem with AoE tanking assuming the group knows what they're doing. Simply taunt main target and get 6 seconds for tab targetting, spam devastate, TC, and cleave, plus should be easier now with more threat and faster atk speed.

ALSO I got the t4 helm later in the run, although that's the only two pieces I got in this run (3rd run thru) I am in no position to complain, nor would I.

P.S. about Blizz having a vendetta against war tanks, considering the only BoE BS items (or at all) are http://www.wowhead.com/?item=23538 and http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32756, everything else comes from boss drops with low drop rates.

As of patch 3.0.2 this is now a highly desirable paladin tanking weapon as well as the Suneater. Enchanted with Potency (+20 Strength), King's Defender will deliver very high pally tanking threat.

I just had this sword drop for me in Karazhan last night and was wondering, since the latest patch changes to paladins, what would be the best enchant to put on this? I've been tanking through Kara a few times, and we have a very particular way we do loot. After leveling my Death Knight up to 75. Seeing my Shaman's trinket drop three times. (The Lightning Capicator) I've yet to get this bad-boy for my DK tank. I know at 75, there are better tanking weapons around. I'm aware, fully. But now its personal. It makes me sad, for sure, that I'll have two Decapitators before I see this baby drop, but I will see it drop, and I will roll need on it.

I think this sword is good for wars and pallys only! pallys should get a SP chant on it if they have it but this is srictly for tanks. i myself had it once but i upgraded it with The Unbreakable Will which i did not have to go through and get a key for, i just had to kill someone.

be warned!
despite running Kara in Legacy Loot Mode, the Kara Chess Chest is still personal loot.
I did 30+ Runs with different Characters and never dropped the Sword, dropped it in my first run with tank loot spec.
Got the advice from a Member of the All The Things Community (Transmog farming)
