Welcome to Wowhead's Fishing guide to unusual items from the profession, including offhand weapons, rum, crates, and prizes. Fishing isn't just a way to feed yourself, your friends, and your pet cheaply. You can also find fun stuff, win valuable prizes, and get drunk to boot!
Trawling for Trinkets
Some items are purely random, so every time you drop a line, you have a chance to find something fun. A couple of items are valuable (extremely rare, but valuable). Most of these don't require fishing in a particular spot, and none of them require fishing in pools.

Fish Slappin' - Offhand Fish
You can fish up a BIG one, and carry it around so everyone can marvel at your achievement! These are randomly fished along with other fish you're trying to get (if you're fishing where you can catch

, for example). You can carry your fish in your offhand, and it will show up any time you have your weapons out (Ctrl-Z).
Sadly, you can't really slap anyone with these fish. They don't do anything other than sit there being decorative (and suspiciously stiff).
These are some of the 20 different fish you can proudly hold in your off-hand. You don't even have to know how to Dual Wield!

The rarest of these appears to be the elusive

. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear much larger than a 'regular' offhand fish. But you'll have the bragging rights.
Not all big fish like this can be dual-wielded, such as

(notice that the tooltip does not say "Held in Off-hand" like the others do). There isn't even a way to cook them. However, fish-loving hunter pets will eat them.
Precious Finds

: This is a totally random fishing prize, with a horrifically low drop rate. Consider dropping it in the Blackrock Depths volcano when you're done with it. Invite your friends.

: This mace is another totally random and extremely rare fishing drop. Imagine: a fish you really CAN hit someone with! Requires a minimum 55 fishing skill to catch, 150 skill to avoid "your fish got away".
Casting for Crates
Crates and Trunks can both hold valuable fishing items. Crates are random from any fishing; Trunks are only out of a special kind of pool.
Venture Company Crates
There are four types of
Crates
you can get. Each of them contains a small number of Engineering components; what kind of components depends on the crate level. The level indicates the approximate level range of the zone where you'll likely get these items. The Venture Company lost these already, so they've probably already filed the proper insurance claims.

Trunks in Wreckage
Trunks
can be fished up out of Floating Debris and Floating Wreckage. Floating Debris is the lowest-level type.
Debris pools have a light-colored ring around them, which is important because sometimes you'll see other boards or boxes floating around that won't give you anything interesting when you fish around them. (There's a coffin floating just by the docks in Ratchet. It's empty. I think.)
All Floating Debris/Wreckage has a chance to contain the following items. The Rum Consolation Prize is what type of rum you might get with (or instead of) a Trunk in that level range.

Prizes in Pools
Fishpools aren't just for finding great fish -- there are treasures hiding in the swarm! And where you do your fishing will tell you what kind of prizes you have in store.
All pools below follow a similar catch pattern:
85% chance of getting the pool's fish type
5% chance each of one of the following: (Appropriate Level) Trunk, 1-3

The type of Trunk or Rum you get corresponds to the level of the zone where you are fishing.
