As the title says, you must "catch" the fish. Buying it off AH or having it in inventory will not be good enough to get the acheivement.

You can complete this achievement in the low level starting areas (the level 1-10 ones) by fishing in any inland lakes at Mulgore, Durotar, Elywynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Tirisfal Glades, Azuremyst Isle, Eversong Woods (except unnamed inland areas) and Teldrassil.

The fish to catch for these areas is the 15 Pound Mud Snapper and can be completed at level 5 (minimum level to learn Fishing) without risk of being killed by the enemy faction.

However, the fishing rate of any of these off-hands is approximately 1 in 2000 according to El's Anglin forums. This makes this achievement much harder than Old Crafty or Old Ironjaw, and hence the recommendation to do it in a safe low level starting zone instead of any of the other higher level off-hands in contested zones (unless you are on a PvE server).

Currently in bay of storms working on this - 3 hours 20 mins worth of bait into it - 768 catches - no drop yet...

El did the number crunching and figured it to be 1/10000 that any of these fish drops. On the upside, you're odds of catching one of these fish is slightly better than winning $100 playing Powerball (1/11927.18 chance to win $100 in powerball).

On the down side, Leeroy Jenkins and his guild had 3,300 times better chance of survival in the UBRS whelps than you do of catching this fish... and they failed...

This one's gonna take a while...

*EDIT* Yah I totally gave up - other areas have to have a better drop rate. Good luck to anyone still in BOS.

*SECOND EDIT* FYI in HF I am 5 episodes of 24, 4 episodes of American Idol, 1 episode of Lie to Me, the entire 3 hour long Gandhi, all told... 13 hours 30 minutes worth of bait into it and still no Dark Herring... ugh.

*FINAL EDIT* Got it. Was on last night getting ready to log to scrim CS with some friends, caught him and started yelling at the top of my lungs on vent. "I GOT IT! EXPLETIVE FINALLY!" All told, almost 15 hours of bait, and 5 days solid of doing nothing but fishing while I was on WoW. Good luck to everyone else still doing this. It's worth it in the end.

Azhara isn't best place to do this achivmient cause there are 6 kind type of fish - so the % is less than in start zones where only 2 types of fish u can catch.

Assuming that the RNG rolls a 2000 sided virtual die, having only 2 types of fish doesn't necessarily mean that getting the rare fish is much easier. It simply means that those 2 fish occupy a higher range of numbers; basically, from 2 to 2000, with 1 being the rare fish (assuming that the 1 in 2000 drop rate is the same across all rares).

As such, Ashzara is the best place to do it, because 2 different rares makes it 2 in 2000, or 1 in 1000 - much greater odds. However, until enough information is collected on accurate droprates of these rares, we can't be certain which ones are the easiest and which ones are the most difficult.

Edit: after reading the forums at ElsAnglin (http://www.elsanglin.com/forums/topic/one-that-didnt-get-away-achievement) it seems that Bay Of Storms isn't the best place to fish, and that the two drops there are rarer than others. Stonebull Lake is the popular choice atm. However, I'd like to point out that the logic of "less drop variety = higher chance at fish" is still flawed as Blizzard is always in control of the drop rates, the real manipulator of how rare something is or is not.

Note to fishers in Azshara use a lure when fishing.
I have 375 skill +5 from boots, + 37 from weap and +2 from gloves enchant. I got fish got away messages with all my gear equipped at some catches. I really hope that was not one of the rares.

I feel awful bad, I was doing Stranglethorn Extravaganza, and everything was on auto-loot, and suddenly I fish in one of the pools and this achievement randomly pops up, fishing skill like 170, only fished like 2 hrs total ever. Good luck! (BTW i got the rockhide strongfish), and 1 thing, dont go actively searching for this achievement, do other ones and this will come in time!

Looks to me like they removed the unknown, suspected WotLK rare fish Baby Coralshell Turtle and 113 Pound Swordfish. But Dark Herring, is that new? I'd still suggest Stonebull Lake for any Horde that wants to try their luck at this early. And for Alliance, I'm assuming Elwynn if you don't want to make the trip? I'm on Lothar US-PVE, so feel free to come keep me company at Stonebull!

Hi Guys,

this is my first post on this site, thanks for this site its great! Anyways, I think after patch 3.03 they may actually have boosted the drop rates of some if not all of them.

Last night i caught the Mudsnapper (15LB) within 220 casts. I caught many 12LB's.

i was fishing outside of SW in the crystal lake i think thats probably the best place to go and the easiest catch.

The reason why isay they must have boosted the drop rate could because there were a few oother guys fishing there too and we all got the drop within 5mins of each other. We all started about the same time too.

Try crystal lake if your alliance and stonebull if your horde, those are probably the best and easiest places to go.

I know the math isnt exactly science but a number of guildies have caught this achievement since 3.03. And they tried a lot before 3.03 too....

I've spent 3 hours two days ago in ashzara after around half a dozen hooks and not a single offhand i moved to Bloodhoof village.

My count in Bloodhoof is now well over 6000 casts with no luck
The RNG really doesn't seem to be in my favor. =((
May pick things up tomorrow if i fish for much longer i think my brains might turn into sushi soon =(

Similar situation here, I spent hours in Azshara, but when I went down to Bloodhoof I got one within 10 minutes. I realise I'm one of the incredibly lucky, but for what it's worth, my vote goes to the starting areas.

I would not be surprised if Blizzard removed this achievement from the overall Accomplished Angler achievement. It is very similar to the Old Crafty or Old Ironjaw, in that it is nothing but dumb luck whether you get the drop or not.

Mr. Pinchy is decently low drop rate but nothing like these other fish. I personally have casted over 2,000 lines and have yet to get this achievement. I have been fishing in the Crystal Lake outside Goldshire.

If anyone suggests something better, I would love to hear it, otherwise you get to stand around waiting for the RNG to bless you for this one.

12 Pound Mud Snapper - 1 caught: 0.1% drop rate
Minor Healing Potion - 1 caught: 0.1% drop rate
Minor Mana Potion - 1 caught: 0.1% drop rate
15 Pound Mud Snapper - 1 caught: 0.1% drop rate

Note that the drop rates are far from exact, since I didn't have a massive amount of casts.

A few minutes ago, I just fished up the Dark Herring, so I now have my "One That Didn't Get Away" achievement! I was fishing in Valgarde (mostly in open water; fishing in schools only when they spawned next to me), and he was my 266th catch/250th cast (not including the less than 5 "Your fish got away!"s). I fished him from a Fangtooth Herring school. Fishing skill is maxed at 450 (and +20 from my pole), and I was not using lures.

The catch breakdown is as follows:

Bonescale Snapper - 108 (40%)
Fangtooth Herring - 95 (35%)
Glacial Salmon - 39 (14%)
Pygmy Suckerfish - 16 (5%)
Crystallized Water - 5 (1%)
Reinforced Crate - 2 (<1%)
Dark Herring - 1 (<1%)

It technically took 250 casts, as the Pygmy Suckerfish is looted alongside other fish.

Don’t fish in Elwyn for this achievement....after wasting half the night here’s what I found....

•Chance to Catch 15 Pound Mud Snapper: 1 in 12, 009 (8.327 x10 ^ -8)
•Total Playing Time Required (Average): 2.302 days (based on my average of 215 casts per hour)
•You’re twice more likely to die in a car accident than catch it on your first cast
•Don’t worry, after you manage to catch it you still have 99.9911% of your life left

Try Valgarde in Northrend...even though the amount of data collected is small, the chances look to be at least 30-50 times better....

I started off at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore, 395 casts later I was bored so I went to sleep. The next day I decided to try for the Dark Herring and went to Howling Fjord. 75 casts in the Fangtooth Herring schools around Winter's Breath Lake and I caught one just a little down the river at 46,24.

According to a reknown french WoW DB you can also fish the 68 Pound Grouper in Azshara, the French db site records very well fishing locations.

It changes the counter to 3 possible rare fishable in Azshara, I will go fish there and eventually edit in this post my results but that's not really what you are looking for but JudgeHype datas may help you even English users by "hardcoding" the item ID into the sample url below. Hope it helps.

//EDIT: Ok I finally got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper after 16 catchs in Shadowglen the Night Elf starter zone. Reason I left Azshara was a loot table too big and after 400 tries I had only looted a small pound Lobster. So I looked up on JudgeHype the droprate of smaller pound, I did notice the 15 Pound Mud Snapper at 0.56% on this page and the 12 Pound Mud Snapper at 2.05% on this page, both are in Night Elf starter zone so I started fishing here, the 2th catch was a 12 Pound version and to the 16th catch in Shadowglen I got the 15 Pound version. So my theory, the best location to fish for this achievement a rare from is the location which has the SMALLEST loot table, higher pounds fish seems more difficult to me to cacth like a few of them in azshara were recently added to a loot table that is already well filled, the 15 Pound Mud Snapper is here since more than a year on low level areas and seems the best fish to catch for this achievement, but certainly not fishing in Azshara or Northrend.

I was just here leveling my cooking, in hopes that maybe I'd get lucky and get a rare along the way to knock that achievement out, and all be damned if this didn't make me the most frustrated ever.

I had 260 fishing, plus the Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (+100) and Strong Fishing Pole (+5) making 365.

I would catch about 1-2, and then I would lose about 6 in a row, and then catch another 1-2, rinse and repeat.

I sucked it up to get enough for my cooking, but then departed.

Screw it, I'm going to the starting area, even if the chances of the drop are better because there are 2 different ones, the fact that im missing so much negates that.

I would definitely wait to try this achievement here until you have 375 fishing or more.

Out of 102 casts at Mirror Lake in Elwynn Forest, I got the following:
56 Raw Brilliant Smallfish (54.9%)
40 Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers (39.2%)
1 Minor Healing Potion (0.01%)

1 15- Pound Mud Snapper (0.01%)

I also was able to skill up decently in Fishing, so it's a fairly peaceful area (read: could also be boring) place to try to get this achievement done.

This is a story about how incredibly time consuming this achivement can be.

I started out after finishing my other achivements thinking this might take a while, ironjaw took me close to 2000 casts back before 3.0 patch, so I thought i knew what i was getting into.

I spent 6500 casts in mulgore and eversong woods, catching around 80 mud snappers at 10 or 12 pounds, but no 15 pound one.

So WOTLK came along and I had other things to do, and put this aside for a while. But I took it up again a couple of days ago, thinking the dark herring was a sure thing!

So far I have spent over 3000 casts at various locations in HF, about half of them in herring pools, and I have yet to see what I'm looking for.

As I type this I'm 50 fish from breaking the magic number of 10 THOUSAND catches for this achivement, which at an average of 15 seconds per catch means over 41 HOURS of time spent fishing only for this achivement.

Let this be a warning for others not favoured by the RNG. This could take a while!

I did a ton of reading everywhere I could before I attempted this achievement, and decided on Stonebull Lake. I went there, and tried exactly 2000 attempts, got nothing, and gave up.

The other night I went back, determined, fished 61 attempts, and got my 15 Pounder.

From what I've gathered, that place has the best drop rate, 1/2000. The others range up to 1/7000. Approx.

Go to Stonebull. It'll come up eventually.

I probably got extremely lucky, but I would still recommend going here as Alliance as there is no horde around, and others have posted lots of success stories in this area.

I will also mention that the exact fishing hole I caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper was located directly at 57.5, 38.

- Howling Fjord = 1000 casts for a Dark Herring, no luck
- Gave up for a week
- Stonebull Lake in Mulgore = 1000 casts there for 15 pounder, no luck either
- Stillwhisper Pond in Eversong Woods = 300 casts or so and TA DA, I finally got it.

Best advice I have, don't give up. I was pulling my hair out on this one but eventually got it.

I fished in Fort Wildervar for the Dark Herring . After 3k casts and a broken spirit i said screw it "no herring" I then thought i would try the 15 pound mud snapper after reading detailed co ordinates on thottbot. Exactly 66 casts later i landed the 15 pound mud snapper completing the achievement.

The way I got this achievement was almost too incredible to be true, I realize after reading comments here. I was tired of buying suckerfish for oils or oils already made so I figured I should just fish em myself. I took up fishing and went to Iceflow Lake.
I prepared my newbie pole with a shiny bauble and placed my first bobber. After a few seconds it splashed and I pulled up a 15 pound Mud Snapper - my first fish ever! At first I thought it was a "first fish" achievement. How wrong I was...
On the other hand, I have been looking for a Time-Lost Protodrake for days, and not even a corpse.

Unbelievably, I went to level my fishing from 250 to 300 - I read this whole thread before going, I figured I might as well have a (low) chance of completing this achievement while levelling. Went to Dun Morogh, ready to sit in for a session. I've not fished in the areas where it is possible to catch one of these fish since I was really low level fishing - I sorta figured I'd never have the patience to see this, if I'm honest. 70 catches in...unbelievable. Very lucky obviously. Funny thing is, I also caught Old Ironjaw within my first 300 attempts ^_^

I am at about 3,000 casts of trying to do this achievement. I have mostly been trying for the Dark Herring in the pools in Howling Fjord, though I have tried for several hours in the starting zone waters. While catching various fish to help level my daughter's cooking, I discovered that the river in Hillsbrad yields only mud snappers and catfish. So this got me thinking that this might be the most efficient place to fish for a rare fish, since both mud snapper and catfish can throw rares and you do not have to chase pools around. Of course, this assumes that the rare has a chance to pop in the place of the normal fish, rather than just having a fixed chance to drop.

Started off fishing in Moonglade, since I'm a Druid I thought that would be a nice serene and convenient spot. But ~600 fish later and no dice on the 52 Pound Redgill I went to Stonebull Lake on recommendation of the comments here.

236 fish later:

86 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper - 36.44%
2 10 Pound Mud Snapper - 0.85%
1 Minor Mana Potion - 0.42%
1 15 Pound Mud Snapper - 0.42%

Obviously the percentages are off because I stopped after I got what I wanted (I'm a poor scientist), but this worked for me, got the whole thing behind me in about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Clearly Lady Luck was on my side for this excursion, but I'd recommend it.

I went there at skill 89, I got the 15 pound Mud Snapper the cast after I caught my 100th fish. It was also the same cast I got skill 100. So I think that was 12 casts. I was using absolutely no buffs whatsoever.

They seem to have buffed the drop rate of dark herring.

within 5 casts I had one in my bags and a salty title before my name. Anecdotal evidence but I am pretty convinced. Could be random being random but I doubt it.

I caught the Steelscale Crushfish on a single cast from the ferry from Wetlands to Howling Fjord. My fishing is still less than 200, and after reading the pain people go through for this achievement I feel very, very lucky. It has made me want to pursue the Salty now!

If you were not randomly lucky in the Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor, just take my advice and fish in pools of herring in Howling Fjord. My guildy and I both got the Dark Herring on the same day. Sure, you will end up with about 500 herrings and 300 suckerfish, but you will also fish out quite a few crates with cloth, ore or leather. We are the first "Salty" in the guild and among the few on our server. Grab a snack and good fishing!

104 casts was what I needed to get this achievement done. I got it in Shadowglen in Teldrassil, one of the small lakes that are next to eachother. 15 pound mud snapper was the fish I caught at that place.

After spending many hours in Shadowglen fishing, I gave up, figuring I would go back to this one. Yesterday 1/31/09, on the pier in Daggercap Bay, fishing maxed with no lure, after 6 casts, I pulled a Dark Herring from open water. I have been fishing sporadically everywhere I land where there is water for the last 3 weeks, so I really don't know how many casts in total it has taken to land this achievement, but I can say it is far more than the Sewer Rat...

Ok first off, I would HIGHLY recommend going for the Dark Herring.

I spent about 2 hours fishing Elwynn Forest at Crystal Lake, 5 hours at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore and 3 hours fishing Bay of Storms in Azshara; got about 15x10 lb Mud Snappers, 8x12 lb Mud Snappers and zero 15 lb Mud Snappers. After reading about this fish a bit more and the possible increased drop rate I decided to try it out. I went to Howling Fjord to fish in the lake above Skorn. On my second cast in a pool of Fangtooth Herring I got the Dark Herring. Extreme luck? Yes. Extreme Anglin'? You bet.

Good luck with this achievement, with persistence you shall overcome this :)

I've been fishing in Shadowglen today... after 50 catches I got a 10 Pound Mud Snapper, after 75 catches I got a 12 Pound Mud Snapper, then around 200 catches I got another 10 Pound Mud Snapper ... 350+ catches and counting now and still no 15 Pounder :(

And the quest is a pun to the ancient fisherman's adage of the same name (The one that got away). The saying comes from a hodge-podge collection of ideas, though the basic idea is that all fishermen are prone to telling stories of how big the fish they caught are.

Naturally, to a person so apt to stretch the truth beyond reasonable limits, one gesticulates a Schrodinger's Cat effect applies to fishermen, meaning that if you hook a fish and it gets away, 100% of the fish that are not seen and measured must be assumed to be both record breaking size, and minuscule to the point of absurdity. Since fishermen usually want the biggest possible, fish hooked that get away are always massive.

The effect is even illustrated in the quest linked above...Old Man Barlow is convinced that the Mudfish he hooked all those years ago was the "world's largest" until he actually saw it and then he was rather disappointed with its size. The fish listed in this achievement are the largest of their class, thus being the one that did not get away.

While all this might be very common knowledge, no post has yet to mention that this achievement AND quest are references to real world sayings far older than Warcraft.

It's like saying something is a reference to the movie Pride and Prejudice...the book was first.

I made a bit research on this case, and decided to start with Goldshire, caught about 60 fish there, and gave up... and made an ENORMOUS(Literally) research and decided that the lake below Camp Winterhoof(Howling Fjord) would be pretty good for this one... Caught around 350-400, then gave up...
Didn't try for 4 days.

I'm at this lake again, im a little hopeful, too... 700 catches... Nothing... Damn this thing sucks...

Oh God, its Sunday! Let's try our luck in the tournament... Yay I won, im lucky today... One That Didn't Get Away is the only remaining achievement... I said, *Why not?*, came to the lake again... Caught 50 fish, and thought that i should go on in Goldshire... Then I saw one and only one school there, and heard ppl getting their ahievements this way *Oh, i was just about to give up, but the fish came out of the last school!*, always thought that this is stupid... But couldn't take myself from trying this like everyone else... Following someone's advice on this thread I went to NE starting area to fish pond there. Had Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat on and using Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (skill 450 (+35)/450) I got 15 Pound Mud Snapper within the first 40 or so casts. Very surprised how quick this was. Maybe just luck. Don't know if skill relative to zone fished has anything to do with it, but for sure each cast was quicker in newbie zone on avg than in Northrend fishing spots. I read up on this achievement on wowhead, flew to Valgarde in Howling Fjord, found the first Fangtooth Herring School right next to the Grand Master Fishing Trainer, and cast out a line. I was prepared to stick it out here for a few hours today as a start, and at least walk away with a decent amount of valuable fish to auction off. I fished up a Dark Herring ON MY FIRST !@&#ING CAST! This is by far the luckiest I've even been.

While I'm sure none of you bums will get as lucky as me, I'd still recommend fishing in or around this area for this achievement as you can actually net a few hundred gold per hour by auctioning the fish you catch.

I would highly recommend going to Howling Fjord for this one. I spent a good deal of time fishing from Stonebull Lake and got nothing.

Fishing in Howling Fjord at least makes a good bit of gold. Today's catch for me was as follows:

40 bonescale snapper
48 fangtooth herring
21 glacial salmon
3 crates
2 crystallized water
1 dark herring

I fished in pools every once in a while but mostly in open water. I got the dark herring in open water, north of UK on Cauldros Isle. This is of course not my total data for fishing in HF. I went there off and on for the past couple of days. I'd say it took me about 500 casts total if not a little less.

Just made a cast in a Fangtooth Herring school in Howling Fjord. Caught a Fangtooth Herring. Second cast? Dark Herring. Decided to continue fishing in another Fangtooth Herring pool nearby. First cast in the second pool? Another Dark Herring.

3 casts, 2 Dark Herrings.

66%? Probably not quite, but worth considering if you're looking to fish for the achievement...

In patch 3.1 catching old crafty, mr. pinchy, and presumably old ironjaw though that is not yet on prt version will give you this achievement.

Ptr version also mentions a "baby coralshell turtle" being added to this. Maybe a rare drop from frozen sea? That is pure speculation, no one knows where that drops from yet.

this change will make the achievement much much easier. Which is welcome, it took me 4,000 casts to get this by catching a dark herring, it was the last achievement I needed for the salty title. Almost turned me off fishing and I wouldn't wish to see others inflicted with that. Mr. pinchy is an easy catch (by comparison). If the fishing daily bug is not fixed old crafty is even easier.

I had old crafty, old ironjaw and furious crawdad achievements before I managed this one so it is definately much easier after next patch.

After reading the above posts I've decided to head into Teldrassil for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper.

I've started fishing around 1 o'clock in the evening but had to finish it at 2:15 because of a sudden realm shut down. At 11:30 I've started to fish again and didn't cancel until 13:45 - so after 2 and a half hours of staring into Lake Al'Ameth, I emerged victorious :-)

Total of 457 fish:

Brilliant Smallfish (275 : 60,2%)
Longjaw Mud Snapper (177 : 38,7%)
10 Pound Mud Snapper (3 : 0,7%)
12 Pound Mud Snapper (1 : 0,2%)
15 Pound Mud Snapper (1 : 0,2%)

Now only the Stranglethorn Extravaganza stands between me and Salty Thibble :-)

Finally caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper after a grand total of 1586 casts. I first started fishing for it at Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest since it was the closest to a city. After 1094 casts and reading about how people are catching it in under 500 casts at Teldrassil, I made my way to Shadowglen (the Night Elf starting zone). After 492 casts in Shadowglen, I got him. Here's my report:

I was reading the posts above today and noticed that the people who caught the Dark Herring quickly had a high proportion of Fangtooth Herring catches so I presume were mostly fishing in pools. I set off to test this theory and 60 Fangtooth Herring catches later (pool fishing only, so a few crates also) I got my Dark Herring.

Most interesting of all was that when the Herring arrived it *replaced* the fangtooth herring therefore if this is a rare replacement for a Fangtooth Herring rather than an additional drop and you fish in open water with a 20% Fangtooth Herring droprate you will need to cast 5 times as many times for the same chance of success as pool fishing.

Go my fellow worm danglers and prove me wrong or right.

The achievement is best earned the toughest way possible. Go for the 103 Pound Mightfish.

But don't expect to get it in the first couple weeks or even the first month (or two, maybe). So far for me (2922 casts in Bay of Storms):

In Howling fjord, Near camp winterhoof in the lake there, there are Fangtooth Herring schools, if you fish from these you have a much higher chance to catch the fish Dark Herring, I caught it in about 100 casts, and my friend caught it in about 50. It is a much higher drop rate than any other fish for the achievement, I assume you can catch it in open water there, but the schools give a much higher chance

I have fished (unsuccessfully) all over Azeroth looking for any fish to get this achievement. I finally decided to try fishing for dark herring. I fished pools only for about 80-100 casts then just stood where I was and fished. After another 20-30ish casts I hooked a dark herring! WOOT! This came out of the lake around Camp Winterhoof, normal water (not from a pool) and I was using bright baubles as my lure.

Hope this helps someone out there...don't give up, you'll hook it when you least expect to!

You can not buy a rare fish off the auction house and get credit for the achievement, you must fish and catch it yourself.

Bought a Dark Herring off the auction house for 200g and didn't get credit.

Edit: Hmm, thought this comment was a little more informative and helpful than the "I'm at 800 casts and still no rare fish" or "Got mine on my first try!" ones, but I guess not.

After the WotLK xpac, anyone who fishes in the old world is doing themself a disservice.

I caught my Dark Herring in the Lake north of Skorn in Howling Fjord.

If you have the fishing skill to do it, and are 70+, fish the Fangtooth Herring schools in NR.

It is much more convenient to fish in your own backyard, rather than trekking to most of the other places mentioned.

Bay of Storms and Stonebull Lake, no thanks.

I spent 1500 casts in Stonebull Lake before switching to the Lake north of Skorn, where I caught the Dark Herring
as well as hundreds of gold worth of other stuff.

There, you will catch one of four things:

Glacial Salmon (if you miss the pool)
Bonescale Snapper (if you miss the pool)
Fangtooth Herring (in the pool)
Pygmy Suckerfish (in the pool)
oh, and Dark Herring (in the pool) :)

After 30 minutes fishing INSIDE the herring pools in the lake north of Skorn, I fished the dark herring.

Note that fishing there, you have a chance to fish the turtle too. 2-in-1.

An hour ago, as a level 51 with something like 260, 270 fishing (with a +25 fishing pole), I caught the 22-pound lobster in Azshara in the Bay while I was fishing for lobsters to level up my cooking. I didn't have a lure or anything; I didn't even know this was an achievement. I'd been fishing for maybe 10, 15 minutes... maybe like 50 casts or so. Heck, I didn't even have my 1000 Fish achievement yet when I caught it.

Just wanted to offer an alternative perspective on the skill/level you need to have in order to get a shot at this. After reading though this whole page of comments, I only now realize the freakish luck that my catch must have been....

k...so...this has to have been nerfed or something... i got 3 dark herrings within 15minutes, either i am one lucky dude (which makes no sense considering how many times i've run stratholme for rivindere's mount and killed about a zillion whelps for a whelpling pet) or this should be a lot easier. btw if you need proof i have the screen shots :P

I was building up rep with Thunderbluff by questing in Bloodhoof Village and Camp Narache, and was to go to Thunder Bluff, but stopped on the way to fish in Stonebull Lake, Mulgore. Ony about the 10th to 15th cast I caught a 15 Pound Mud Snapper, and was very excited as that was the last achievement I needed for the meta-achievement; Accomplished Angler.

Just got this achievement yesterday.

Went to the Lake north of Skorn in HF and fished only in the schools around the lake. It took me 20mins all up, flying around the lake included. Going for the Dark Herring is definitely the way to go!

What are everyone thoughts on being able to fish one up in Wintergrasp? Or the turtle mount? Since Wintergrasp has the valuable fish, and can be used for Fish Feast, I am trying there, but no luck.

Just finished this achievement. I went for the Dark Herring, and flew loops around Skorn like many others have, picking off Fangtooth Herring schools.

Only took me about 113 casts to fish the Dark Herring up, for a total of about 45 minutes of fishing. Not an unreasonable amount of time to spend on this achievement, and those who still need to raise their cooking can use the extra stacks of Herring when everything is said and done. On top of all that, you also have a chance of fishing up the Sea Turtle.

IMO, Dark Herring is the way to go for anyone doing this achievement. It just seems like a no-brainer.

i dont know about the dark herring...will take yer advice. But, as for the sea turtle, i heard that you could get it in Grizzly Hills, in Glacier Salmon pools. And, in fact, i got one.....first cast right to the center of the pool.

I will now count myself as luckiest fisherman ever. I got this on my fourth cast ever in the Tauren starting area. I had no idea it was a hard-to-get achievement until just now, a week later, when I curiously looked it up. I had figured it was one of those things like the 15-pound catfish.

I got this last night on my hunter lvl 80 with fishing skill at 443 with a 5%+ Fishing hat and the 30% Jeweled fishing pole.

its not a 5%+ fishing hat, its a +5 fishing hat. not percentage based. same with the pole, its +30 fishing, not +30% fishing.

This was the last achievement I needed for the Accomplished Angler . I headed out to Howling Fjord to try for the Dark Herring. I flew back and forth from Winter's Breath Lake and the lake at Fort Wildervar, running around each one only casting in the Fangtooth Herring Schools. I cast over 6,000 times with no luck and got frustrated so I hearthed ran to the SW portal and took myself down by the lake behind Goldshire (Crystal Lake) and started fishing off of the dock. Here's my info:

As far as I can see, a rare fish will take like 1500 casts on average. Remember this is average, and can be way higher or lower

I use around 25 mins fishing 100 fish, so this means this achievement in average will take 6-7 hours

After reading all the comments above and failing to catch mine at Elwynn Forest I went to the recommended location:

EDIT: Also I do wonder sometimes if these fish have a "cooldown" once caught. Perhaps that is why some people catch it in 5 casts (as I have known people to do on my realm) and some take hours and thousands of casts. If you think about it, if this was true, a person who is fishing a certain fish, that is on cooldown, would have to fish for hours if the cooldown or spawn time is that long. Then if the cooldown is expired the next person that comes along will have it in no time depending on the loot list probability.

I don't think this is impossible, perhaps you should try fishing early in the morning, that would be the best time IF this is true. Let me know if it is!

I've done some fishing out in Howling Fjord for this achievement, but I found the lowbie area to be much easier. Quiet... no moving around for fishing nodes... and I did it all in one sitting in between AB queues. I definitely recommend this location.

Completed at approx 9:25PM. I doubt there's any "cooldown" on rare catches. Just RNG, as usual.

So after reading through these comments I went to lake above skorn with 585 fishing skill. Caught it in 5 casts from my first pool. If that doesn't convince anyone to fish it there then nothing will ;)

I've fished in the lakes in Elwynn Forest and the Herring Schools in Howling Fjord for the past 3 days, every single day, for countless hours, fishing beeing the only thing i do besides raiding and 10 daily quests.

I've fished about 3000fish by now and still nothing. I guess i'm one of the not so lucky ones...

I must thank the people who suggested the Shadowglen. I got my acheivement this morining after about 300 casts over the course of a few days. Now I have terrible luck and even I was able to get this so, shadowglen is very nice.
Also on the plus side, I was doing this on a new character and was able to level my cooking and fishing to their caps for level 10.

Ok so I read thru a bunch of these posts and at first i was fishing for the Dark Herring for 90 minutes with no success... then i read about going to Shadowglen and decided to try it.... Im sure part of it was luck but I went to the NE Starting area behind the lodge and on my 2nd cast in one of the pool back there I got my 15 pound Mud Snapper.

After fishing for a few days in fangtooth herring pools, I gave up and went to Mulgore to try and catch the 15 lb Mud Snapper since there seems to be better luck with catching that one. I caught thousands of fish, and no rare! Went back to Howling Fjord today, and caught the Dark Herring from fangtooth herring pool after about 30 casts in lake south of Fort Wildervar. This was my last achievement for the salty title! Its all luck! Happy Fishing :)

Just wanted to comment on the guy who's fishing in Howling Fiord hoping to catch the sea turtle as well. Sorry to break the bad news, but the sea turtle cannot be fished up in lakes (or any other inland waters). Hence the name "SEA Turtle"

in next patch, i will try my luck combining the new Fishing Contest with catching the rare fish in Howling Fjord, and for those who dont got the turtle yet (i already had to delete one xD) it even better, since:
- "Fish any pool in Northrend where Pygmy Suckerfish are found during the Fishing Contest" thus being everywhere but Crystalsong (lower droprate)
- Every pool in northernd has a very minimal change of giving you the Sea Turtle
- Dark Hering can be caught from any Fangtooth Herring School

Fangtooth Herring School in 3.3, at a Saturday between 14.00 and 15.00 can give you: a Blacktip Shark, a Sea Turtle and a Dark Hering. 3 fish with 1 stone :P

Imo i would suggest everyone to fish in Northrend for the profit of fish you catch while trying to get the Dark Herring.

I'm very aware of RNG and all that but I must say I am now a firm and total beleiver of Shadowglen having a good drop rate. I have this acheivement on 3 different characters all managed to get it from there within about... 2-3 hours. Maybe i was just extremely lucky I dont know but after spending nearly a whole day in Ewlynn i moved to Shadowglen and got it there within 2 hours or so. Then on another char did the same (since i was leveling fishing anyway) and got it again.

Again, I'm well aware of RNG, maybe it just felt like giving me a break (I bet the turtle or rat takes me donkeys!).

I have to say that I am another believer of the Shadowglen method. I started in the waters around Bloodhoof village and nearly 600 casts later still no 15 pounder. I came out to Shadowglen and in 9 casts I had my 15 pounder and the Salty title! I know, I know...someone is going to say something about how drops in WOW are random, RNG, blahblahblah. I decided on Shadowglen based on someone's serious number crunching posted on El's Anglin site (http://www.elsanglin.com/forums/topic/one-that-didnt-get-away-achievement/page/20). I know that people who get the fish are more likely to post, therefore skewing the drop rates, but it worked for me and I would suggest to at least give it a chance (even if you are Horde...it wasn't that hard to get out here).

I was one of the few unlucky to have problems with the achievement. Was the last one for my title so felt I really wanted it done. Some guildies had caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper on the 8th cast. So I started out 9.30 on the Monday morning fishing only at Stonebull Lake (Mulgore) til 13.25 where I felt I had to take a break and at 15.00 I started to fish again - did some fishing again at Stonebull Lake for a hour + something, can't remember. After a while I headed towards to Iceflow Lake (Dun Morogh) fished there from approx 16.00 something to 18.00 where I took a break on two hours to see a movie.

Came back around 20.00 and started to fish again. Fished still at Dun Morogh til like 23.45 something - I had small afks at this point and missed alot of catches as I was boored to death. Headed towards to Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest, did some sleepy fishing til approx 00.30 where I almost were asleep so fell asleep and woke up 9.00 and fished til 9.30 and BAM! I GOT IT! I had actually planned to fish all day again so can't be more happy while I write this! Well here is my list thou. Just another list for people to compare with others, the catch really is random - trust me.

Stonebull Lake: total 1400.

im almost up to 14,000 fish and other things caught, i'd say 80% of all of it is from either fishing for the IF rare fish, the turtle mount, or the dark herring in howling fjord, and i still don't have any of the 3. and if it wasnt for the crocs bug, im sure i wouldnt have the orgrimmar rare fish either.

I'm thinking of giving the Shadowglen area a try.

As Horde, going to the night elf starting zone obviously has it's issues. Elixir of Water Walking eliminates the need to take the boat from Auberdine (you can mount up and run from the northern "point" of the Darkshore coastline) so actually getting there isn't a problem. But since Blizzard seems intent on requiring you to run into/through major enemy cities for holiday meta Achievements every other holiday, maybe with the upcoming Lunar Festival I'll give it a try. I have to visit the Elder in Darn and Dolanar anyway, so while I'm there...

I suggest to anyone who wants this achievement to participate in the STV fishing contest. I caught the Rockhide Strongfish in about 15 casts into Tastyfish pools. I also was not even trying to complete this achievement at the time that i got it.

I have been trying to get this achievment since I first started fishing at lvl 10 over a year ago. Since then I have managed to aquire all of the other achievments needed for the "Salty" title except for Master angler of Azeroth I really started the grind for "The one that didnt get away" once I got all other achievments. At that point I had 6,000+ fish and other things caught, I now have exactly 20,010 fish and other things caught. And I still do not have this achievment. It is very frustrating and I hope you all have better luck than I am having. And i have also used all of the info above to help me find good locations to no avail.

I finally got my Dark Herring from the lake north of Skorn. 21,463 fish and other things caught.

I'd recommend Bay of Storms, if only because you can make a non-zero amount of gold for your time.

For example, you can fish up clams, which can yield various pearls. The golden pearls are very valuable, especially if you're lucky enough to have access to enchanting recipe for +30 Spellpower. Likewise, Winter Squid can sell very well.

Your mileage may vary, but if you're going to throw away some time for the achievement, you may as well try to get some gold out of it.

About 250 or so casts in the lake on the dock behind Goldshire, right next to the NPC's fishing with no fish nodes at all.

My thoughts were that if you are in nodes every time you are more likely to catch those fish more often than the one you really want. It paid off in just over an hour's time for my Rogue. I also won the Fishing Derby today playing it for the first time in about ten minutes!

Now believe it or not, all I have to do is finish my Old Man Barlow achievement for SALTY. So maybe two more days or so to pass the SALT.

So here's my agonizing journey to fishing my way to Salty by catching the Dark Herring and testing my luck on getting the Turtle mount.

FYI I'm fishing only in the fangtooth herring pools.

DAY 1 : spent around 4 hours fishing in the lakes in Howling Fjord.
DAY 2 : spent around 6 hours combined fishing in the lakes in Howling Fjord.
DAY 3 : spent around 4 hours fishing in the lakes in Howling Fjord.

It seems like I too have fallen into the group of people that spend an insane amount of time fishing with no results. The day I run out of things to watch while fishing is the day I'll give up. lol.
I'll continue to update in case anyone else is feeling discouraged. I'm going through the same thing. =)

Edit: Since the last time I posted I've been alternating between Elwynn Forest and Howling Fjord for the achievement. I caught the 15 pound Mud Snapper right in the pool next to Goldshire, by the blacksmithing structure. I'm glad I decided to switch for a bit and just test my luck. Now I'm back to fishing just in the Howling Fjord for the dark herring and turtle mount

Thought I would add my experience with this achievement. Got it fishing in Elwynn at the various lakes there. Tried other locations like Howling Fjord beforehand but decided to work on it in the lowbie zones for safety and not having to move around so I could do other things while working on this one.

Total Casts in Elwynn: 2185
Mud Snapper: 831
Brilliant Smallfish: 1299
10 pounders: 24
12 pounders: 9
Assorted Pots and Junk: 21
15 pounder: 1

Real funny aspect of course is after spending more hours than I want to think about working on this in Elwynn I have since returned to Howling Fjord to work on Turtles All the Way Down due to the compact grouping of the pools there. Having done about 600 Casts there I just caught 2 Dark Herrings in about an hour, no turtle yet though. Long story short good luck on these achievements to all of you guys working on them.

Just got the 15 Pound Mudsnapper 2 minutes ago in Mulgore after 16 throws. I've been to Teldrasil for a couple of hours, hunted the Herring for about 5 hours. But now I thought I'd try my luck in Mulgore since there's been some comments about it beeing the easiest spot. And from what I can tell, it is.

After six hours and 1285 casts in Muglore the 15 Pound Mud Snapper is mine. I was getting between 180-200 casts and hour. Max fishing with the hat and 100 fishing one hour long lure. My advice is to just fish for that one hour once or twice a day when you have nothing else to do. You'll get it eventually. ^.^

Until you get the Turtle Mount, it's probably best to try for this in Northrend- why not try for two achievements at once? After that, though, the best place might be Azshara, simply because the fish can sell for so much on the AH. Darkclaw Lobster, Summer Bass, Winter Squid etc. are some of the only ways to level cooking to 300. They don't always sell quickly, but I got 30-40 gold per stack on my server- much better than the 3-4 gold for a stack of Fangtooth Herring. At least while you're sitting there getting nowhere on the achievement, you can tell yourself that you're actually gold farming.

You could get lucky, or rng() may decide to bust'a'cap in yo ***.

Been to Stonebull Lake in Mulgore most of the time but also ~2000 casts in Bay of Storms in Azshara one day, and not more than 500 casts in the small pond just outside Silvermoon City.
I'm going to continue anyway, good luck to all others trying to battle the RNG gods.

Well, 7600 casts and I finally got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper in Mulgore.

There are two things that I would like to ask on the subject of doing this achievement because I am working at it currently with no avail.

1. Is there a special way people are casting when fishing around pools. I know for a fact that you can't hit the pool sometimes so i wonder do you allow each cast to run it's course, BOTH the hits in the pool and the misses, hoping for some luck on the misses or do you continually recast till it make a good hit?

2. Why is fishing the only part of the game where gear score does not matter beyond a certain point? I have worked hard to get my skill score for fishing (with buffs from my Weather-Beaten Hat +75 lure) to 580. That doesn't seem to make any difference in the chance I get to find rare fish or turtle mount. Now I know that they are all random drops but in every aspect of the game, the game allows advantages to higher scores (hit rating, power, etc.) why not fishing. Luck definitely plays a big part in fishing but don't professional real life fisherman know a little more that the guy who gets a bamboo pole and a safety pin? I'm not saying that there should be a significant difference but why can't the drop rate increase a little for the people who want to work for it. Maybe go from a 2% drop rate for rare fish to a 3% or something. Or maybe a buff to increase cast time, something anything to help the committed fisherman in the game. It just frustrating to work at something with NO advantage over other players who just want to "go fishin".

Noone would play if a person with Naxx 10 gear rouge was being beaten out with a ICC 25 geared rouge with the same specs. why should fishing be any different.

Enough rant from me, but I'm saying something to Blizzard and I suggest all those who feel similar do the same.

I've decided to go for the Dark Herring and I think it was totally worth it.

It wasn't all roses tho, after wasting almost 2 days of fishing in Howling Fjord I decided to give up and aim at other achievments but after few months, today, I woke up and took a shower and thought "Damn... I want the Salty title...", wasted few minutes trying to gather info about good spots but I went for the same spot looking for the same thing as few months ago and what a surprise... got it after 6 catches:

Having won the fishing competition on my 3rd attempt , and sneaked into Ironforge at lvl 60 to fish up a deadly foe of old crafty by the name of Old Iron Jaw . I set it upon myself to acquire the Salty title , and set off to catch one which would certainly not get away from me . I took the advice to set up camp in bay of storms , with empty bags in the hope that i could snare a mightfish of enormous proportions , or be lucky enough to get pinched by a lobster even more ellusive than the Magical Mr pinchy who now accompanies me anywhere and everywhere i chose to fish . However after casting 2 thousand times , and catching lobsters and mightfish of all shapes and sizes other than the required 104 pounds , or 22 in the case of the lobster . I did something i have never done on any fishing mission before ... I gave up ! deciding i would take my business elsewhere . Back to the town of my Birth , many moons before ... Mulgore . I got wind that a certain death knight had travelled far and wide to find himself there and casted only 500 times before catching a 15 pound mudsnapper (thanks ZXIN of balnazzar)
I thought it would be a breeze compared to the many days i had spent in the damned bay of storms , but to my horror i caught 5 10 pounders and 2 12 pounders before i hooked the azeroth's most massive mudsnapper .
here are the catch stats from my expedition :

Just got it done few minutes ago, spent two nights in Azshara with about 2500 fish caught in total with no result, then I decided to try my luck at Bloodhoof village and i got 15 pound snapper in 100 casts which is totally awesome :)
however random numbers are still numbers, good luck to everyone doing this achievement :)

Fishing is based on a random chance. However, not all drop chances(e.g. quest drops are random chances) are based on complete random or pseudo-random chance. Initially Blizzard wanted a 35% standard drop rate on quest items but then turned to a linear regression drop rate for quest items and things of that nature. This does not include achievement items such as the fish or the turtle or Mr. Pinchy. These items are completely random as others have stated.

Ok, today i thought I might try this achievement. Although I was a bit afraid tbh after reading all these posts of how many tries they had to make.

Well, I went to Mulgore since after from all the posts it seemed to be a good place to try this out. And it was, i got my 15 Pound Mud Snapper after just 81 tries and I got 100% fish.
I went with the kalu'ak fishing pole, fishing hat and lure. Giving 450+30+5+100 fishing skill.

This was my catch:

43 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
36 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
1 10 Pound Mud Snapper
1 15 Pound Mud Snapper

My Experience was moderately painful.

About an Hour farming Fangtooth Pools in Howling. Then I ran into some competition, so I flapped my way down to Cauldros Isle and did laps of the edge of the Isle. I'm a level 80 Druid, so every now and then I had to slip into Kitty form and toast a Worgan, but for the big part they left me alone. I was probably at it for another 3 hours before it dropped.
Was so relieved to have found it, but also a little despondent not to have scored the Turtle yet.

Approx End results...
~400 Fangtooth
~250 Pygmy
~12 crates
~9 crystalised Water
~1 Dark Herring

I found that while doing laps of Cauldros Isle, the Pygmy drop rate was far higher than everywhere else I had fished. It was about 2 Pygmy to 3 Fangtooth.

Best of Luck, it's boring, but a good feeling when you get her done.

I just about cried the other day...

So I was fishing early Sunday morning for the Dark Herring. Auto-loot was turned OFF. Lo and behold, the Dark Herring comes up! After about 15 hours of fishing! Before looting, I start typing in guild chat and what happens? THE LOOT WINDOW CLOSES! I didn't loot the fish and didn't get the achievement.

Please learn from my stupidity, and turn on auto-loot when fishing for this stuff! Per Blizzard GM, they could not give me the item as they could not verify that I actually fished it up. It's not on my character log since I never actually looted it.

Ugh...at least I still have to get the turtle, hopefully I'll get another before that drops for me!

Just a quick note about the odds here, for anyone contemplating going after this achievement. El's website estimates the odds of catching any of these fish on a single cast as being about 1 in 10,000. (The exception may be the Rockhide Strongfish which can only be caught during the Stranglethorn fishing competition and may have a catch rate as high as 1 in 5,000.)

So what does a rate of 1 in 10,000 mean? Each cast is presumably independent, meaning that previous results have no impact on your chances of success, just like with flipping a coin or rolling dice. Each cast will have the same 1 in 10,000 chance of success, no matter whether this is your first cast or 12,000th. Figuring your chances of success over a number of casts is easy. You figure your chances of being unsuccessful first, which is the probability of failure raised to the power of however many attempts you make. In other words, here your chance of failure is 9999/10,000. With two attempts or casts, your chance would be (9999/10000)^2 (or 0.9999 squared) or 0.9998, or 99.98%. Again, that's your chance of failure, so you find your chance of success by subtracting your result from 1. Here with two casts, your chance of success is 0.0002, or 0.02%.

So let's say you spend some time trying this. How about 100 casts? How about 1000? How about 100 casts/day for 10 days (since each cast is independent, 1000 casts gives you the same odds whether done all together or spread over 10 days)? What are the chances for success?

500 casts - 4.88%
1000 casts - 9.52%
5000 casts - 39.35%
10,000 casts - 63.21%

The sad truth is that this is a very difficult and luck-dependent achievement. If you sit down in Elwynn Forest or Mulgore and make 100 casts, you have about a 1% chance of getting your rare fish, and thus it's not surprising that some people get lucky after a relatively few tries. However, even if you sat there for 10,000 casts, you'd have greater than a one-third chance (36.79%) of finishing those casts without getting the achievement. And remember, after those 10,000+ fish have been caught, your odds of success on the next cast are no greater than they were before you started.

I went for the Dark Herring from Fangtooth Herring schools in Howling Fjord, after ~350 casts I got it. I can't help but feel fortunate it didn't take ~1000 casts. This was also the last achieve I needed to go Salty. WOOT!

according to my statistics, i have caught over 17k fish. How many rare? none... Im completely desperate. And I know that all people i know who completed this achiev did this during skilling fishing. 17k fish... not hours, but days of work! Unbelieveable how unlucky can i be.

I acutally got this when completing the Thunder Falls daily fishing quest in Stormwind, after 7 casts I have the quest and the 15 pound mud snapper. Maybe I was just lucky on this day. I do have over 500 other fish caught from various other in land lakes so again maybe I was just lucky today.

After maybe 3-4h in Howling fishing 800ish Fangtooth's I decided to hear the call of Stonebull lake and take my chances... 20 min after getting there the 15 pound mud snapper appeared !

Today, while fishing for Stormwind daily at Thunder Falls, I caught the 15 pounds mud snapper.
I already had the Achievement some time ago with the Dark herring but went to check if the snapper was added to the list.
It wasn't.

So for people that might thing there's a hidden achievement for catching them all : there isn't.

Today after reading up on "The one that didn't get away" achievements on various sites to decide on which fish I'd be chasing, I settled on catching my self a Dark Herring.

As I made my way down to the lake in Howling Ford, I was thinking about how I had read that some people spent days fishing for this thing. Some said that they spent hours a day with no results.

I was mentally preparing my self for the long hours/ days ahead.

Soon I spotted a pool of Fangtoothed Herrings, landed and did my first cast.

The Fishing bobble splashed... I clicked it... and the Achievement dinged.

Caught it on first cast :O

I was fishing level 480(ish) at the time, and hadn't even bothered to place any lures or anything else as it was just my first attempt/ cast from mounted.

Forget the other fish. Go for the Dark Herring. Not only you can sell it for almost 12gold but you can do Turtles All the Way Down at the same time. Kill 2 birds with one stone...

Caught the 32 pound catfish randomly while fishing for bristle whisker catfish in Redridge mountains. Took about 15 casts. Wasn't even trying. I feel lucky. :-)

For years, I've been randomly spending a few hours in Howling Fjord going around Lake Cauldros. After all, on two other toons, I caught a dark herring there while just merely trying to skill up fishing. With the introduction of the Sea Turtle, I was even more adamant about staying in that zone. Finally, last night, I caved. I also brought up my old theory on time of day.
I went here, saw Stonebull listed several times as better than the Fjord, so I went there.
I fished last night there for about 20min. I caught a 10 and a 12lb snapper in that time, as well as a health potion.
I logged in earlier this afternoon to try again and within 5minutes, my hope faded but I kept trying. As soon as I stopped caring, I caught a 15lb snapper.

I'm also a Stonebull Lake believer.

Recap:
over 2 years, 3 server hops and countless hours (possibly days) of fishing Howling Fjord... thousands and thousands of herrings. I filled a gbank with herrings once.
Randomly caught 2 dark herrings on toons I don't care about. None on the one toon that mattered.

about 25min and less than 60 fish at Stonebull earned the achieve.
Not saying that everyone will have the same luck, but coming here changed my decision on where to fish, and I hope that my experience of trying for so long doesn't play out the same for others.

thought id try this ach today as im only missing this and tourney win for "salty"...started in winterhoof lake in howling fjord...
tried 2 strategies, open water and pool fishing. I recently got my turtle a few weeks ago while fishing fathom eel schools in tol barad...so gave me a little flxibility...here are stats from howling fjord..

i have maxed fishing at 525, using mastercraft kalu'ak pole, weather beaten fishing cap (and lure it provides) for a total skill of 635

Well ... I went into this Achievement with trepidation after reading how long it took others to get this one. I had just finished getting the 'Bloated Salmon' for the Oceanographer Achievement and that took about 1450 casts, which was enough to cause me frustration and intense boredom and from what I can see I did it in quite a good amount of casts.

Anyway, I decided to go to the lake behind the blacksmith at Goldshire and I got the 15 pound mud snapper in 21 casts! I'm so happy right now.

Went to Mulgore/Stonebull lake and parked it there for about 2 hours. took some breaks here and there. Got the 15 pound mud snapper right around the 2 hour mark. Was about 200 casts.

This is the last achievement I need for Salty. Wondering about the following, with these facts in mind:

I already have my Sea Turtle
I'd rather fish in pools for That's A Lot of Bait
I'd rather catch cataclysm fish, cause they are a bit more useful than regular fish.

But, I'd be willing to settle for old world fish if I could do a pool - that's really my only "requirement". Any ideas?

ugh. i had some hope after reading about stonebull lake. this is the last achievement i need for "salty".

- about 900 into SB lake, so far, no dice
- previously i've done about 3k in blasted lands (lobster and mightfist)
- and about 2k, mostly from pools, in howling fjord for the dark herring.

any suggestions guys?

Wanted to add my data, I have had all other achievements for Salty for over a year now, and from that point on have been trying various spots for this achievement and this is some of the more useful info that I have saved, I went awhile without the fishing-buddy add-on so my data isn't fully complete but its the last little bit of fishing that I had the add-on for.

Finally got the achievement, by catching the 15lb Mud Snapper from Stonebull lake in Mulgore. The annoying part is I've caught several of those rare fish... from before the achievements were in the game, and they weren't retroactive. :( That said:

It really seems that 15 Pound Mud Snapper is the easiest option.

I tried to catch the Dark Herring, I got the turtle and after that I kinda gave up.

Then i went for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper, 120 throws and that was it.

So to anyone going for the achievement, head for mulgor.

I just fished up the 15 pound mud snapper at Stonebull lake. It's just a matter of luck I think as I tried several times, hours, for the dark herring and no dice. After 40 casts or so, the 12 pound came, then after 5-6 more casts the 15 pound one. Good luck all.

I seemed to catch more of the rare Mudsnappers (10lb, 12lb, 15lb) when I switched to +100 lures from +75 lure. Perhaps there is a threshold that increases your odds somewhere between 640 and 665 fishing skill?

I was extremely skeptical about the number of posts saying Stonebull was the ticket since you have to take some of these comments with a grain of salt but for once they were right. I had spent 2 hours in Howling Fjord and got nothing. But I decided to take my chance in Mulgore and here's the stats:

for One That Didn't Get Away and I Smell A Giant Rat achievements i found myself an "easy" and less boring way to farm, i use the "wowvid" addon(is an addon that allow u to watch movies/episodes that u have downloaded on your pc in game) and turning off the music from wow so the only thing i mostly hear is my fishing pole when i catch something, also i put my fishing keybinding on one of my mouse's keybindings
my point is that (at least for me) to watch a movie/episode while fishing make my life realy easier =)

Alternatively, I had read a lot about Stonebull Lake being one of the hotspots. Frustrated with the Dark Herring, I decided a change of scenery was in order.

Lol, I got this acheivment when I was level 5 noob, it was last year when I started the game, I had NO IDEA the fish were this hard to catch until now. I caught a 15 pound mudsnapper in Night Elf starting area and it only took me like, 5 casts as far as I remember. Since I had NO IDEA it was rare or special at all, I sold it to a vendor. Keep in mind that this was my VERY FIRST day of playing WoW.

I just need to get THAT LUCKY with the Sea Turtle Mount now...

Decided to try Stonebull Lake for the first attempt at this achievement. I can happily say that it only took 40 minutes with maxed (525) Fishing skill, +30 from Jeweled Fishing Pole, +5 from Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, and +150 from Heat-Treated Spinning Lure for a total of 710 Fishing skill. Here's what I got:

Caught the Dark Herring today. You may have heard the celebration echoing around the world...16,568 fish caught, 23,264 fish and other things caught. Subtract maybe 4,000 fish caught while leveling, doing 203 fishing dailies, etc; and subtracting maybe 6,000 fish caught catching the bloated rares for the Cata achs still leaves about 6,000 Fangtooth Herring caught in Winter's Breath Lake. I reckon that's about 50 hours of my life spent with one eye on the screen, waiting for a bobber to bob or a splash sound.

Are there easier places to catch it? There must be. One alt who has gained at least 30 levels just from the SW fishing and cooking dailies caught a 15-lb mudsnapper doing the Thunder Falls daily (catch ~#800). But wait, it gets worse. Another alt was created just before Cata specifically to get more cooking tokens to buy more cooking mats so I could try for Server First 525 Cooking (yes, I got it). I eventually sent her out to Newman's Landing to watch for Shelly spawns. One day while waiting for my main's hearth CD to run out, I noticed this alt hadn't leveled fishing or cooking, but had a pole. So, I fished for a while off the dock next to those BB Bruisers. Catch #97 was the 15-lb mudsnapper. <SOB> The RNG is a very capricious god. BTW - I know this spot is not listed in Wowhead as a spawn point. Still, I caught it there.

Anyhow, all that's left to the clear the whole professions tab is that doggoned sea turtle mount. Off to the more lucrative Cata zones to fish it up...

I started working on the 2 fishing achievements Liminologist and Oceanographer(whatever it is) and had written down all remaining fish I needed. I looked all them up and mapped out my plan. I also decided to make some effort at fishing the pools and working on the Turtle mount and one of the rare fish for this achievement. I fished a tiny bit last night in Howling Fjord. Came back this morning to work a bit more. I hit the lake by Camp Winterhoof and then went down the 3 rivers leading down. I figured I would try the lake just South of Fort Wildervar(alliance) and hit all the pools. I was about to give up for the moment to go work on the Molten Front and hit 1 last pool--that ws the magic 1, I fished up the Dark Herring : ) Give or take a few numbers, I ended up with a couple reinforced crates, a couple crystallized waters, like 68 pygmy suckerfish, and like 71 fangtooth herring.

I was fishing in pools for the guild achievement today (10k fish in pools). I remembered I had to do "One that didn't get away" so I flew to Howling Fjord to go catch the "Dark Herring"
I'm maxed out fishing wih the kalu 'ak pole, no lure. It took me exactly 4 casts to catch this one in the pools around Skörn. Just luck I guess 0.0

As a player who want to achieve like me( :) ) I have one hint for you. And here it is

Northern Stranglethorn is for me the place for fishing and I will explain it why

1: I get the achievement: Fish don't leave footprints out here in this zone (not only once but I think 4 times)
2: You can do a part of the quest given by Nat Pagle which is name is Nat Pagle, Angle extreme
3: Fishing for Steelscale Crushfish, 68 Pound Grouper or Rockhide Strongfish in Stranglethorn Area during a sunday could be a good idea because of the Booty Bay fishing Contest
4: Stranglethorn is a place full of school and you could do even a part of That's a lot of Bait

I just got my 15 pound mud snapper today.

I went to Teldrassil and went all the way to the north end of the river to the waterfall.
I stood on the edge of the waterfall facing south and I caught the following:

Tried for Dark Herring near Skorn for a week. Lots of good catches that sell well in the AH, and I got the turtle mount, but no Dark Herring.
Then I tried Stonebull Lake for a week. Caught everything except the 15-pounder. It was so frustrating.
Then I tried the lake just south of Org and caught the 15 pound mud snapper on the 4th cast!
You can only hate the RNG for so long (and vice versa).

I realize this is incredibly fortunate, but this confirms that the RNG can smile upon you...

I agree that Stonebull Lake is the way to go. After a couple years of going for a dark herring in Howling Fjord I just recently decided to start giving Stonebull Lake a try. Tonight after about 100 or so casts, I finally got a 15 pound mudfish and my Salty title! Oddly I caught a 12 pound mudfish then a 10 pound mudfish right before I caught the 15 pounder.

caught this bastard of a fish today after about 12 or 12.5 hours of fishing off and on for 3 days. At first i was fishing for it in Elwyn forest at mirror lake, but 1675 fish caught and nothing to show for it, i decided to move somewhere else. I went to Stonebull lake in Mulgore, caught him probably after about 1200 casts. (am not sure because for some reason my stupid fishing buddy reset, which made me mad because i had it going with the specific reason of posting it on here.) So we will just say that around 2000 fish caught before i got the 15 pounder. Happy fishing all.

Guess im lucky i fished in 2 Fangtooh herring pools in the lake above Skorn 41,22 and got the Dark herring, same happen my first time trying for the turtle mount fished in 2 pools got it like my 5th cast. My fishing is at 403+25,I don't think fishing skills have anything to do with it tho because i got my turtle mount and Mr Pinchy on the same day and i was only 200 and something.

Had gotten a 22lb lobster pre-achievements and was pretty disappointed about never having credit for this. Tossed my line to the lake ~550 times to grab a 15lb mud snapper and check this awful achievement off my list. Seems like you get a random xx pound mud snapper every ~50 casts, perhaps 1 in 10 being the 15 pounder.

I was trying this achievement since wotlk, always in howling fjord, for almost 3 years i think. No Dark Herring, no Turtle mount.

And today i tried the river outside darnassus, the one who goes north and get split in a fork. Just stood in the middle river, like someone said before, and got it on my 40th cast.

Now im a happy salty. Just 2 or 3 years late, but still, happy as #%!#%!% !

I'm not sure if it matters, but I'm Horde, and on one character I got the Dark Herring while doing some fishing/farming for buff food at Crystal Lake in Howling Fjord (it probably took about 300 fish to get it, but it was a surprise when I got it). On another character, I deliberately fished for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper at Mirror Lake in Elwynn Forest. It took just over 200 fish to get it.

Took me 37 casts at Stonebull Lake,Mulgore. I am an alliance toon. I just found the set of rocks on the west side of the lake. Used the Heat-Treated Spinning Lure,Captain Rumsey's Lager, +5 to fishing, Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat , Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole. Bringing my fishing skill up to 722. Well worth it though. I found an odd pattern while fishing Stonebull. My "rare" catches would go in bursts. So I'd get Smallfish + Snappers for about 30 minutes and then I'd catch 4 "rare" items in the next 1 minute, be it a potion, 10, or 12 pounder. And then back to nothing for the next 30 minutes.

Tomorrow when I hit this spot again, I plan on getting the data and hopefully graphing it to see if it's just perception or if there really is something to it. I was at this spot for about 4 hours and I saw this over and over that my rare catches would come within 1 or 2 casts of each other.

It seems that there is a MUCH higher chance to catch the Steelscale Crushfish on the new Darkmoon Faire Island. I myself caught it and the Sea Pony in 246 catches. Anywhere there is open water will do.

Just got the Steelscale Crushfish on the docks to the left of the portal on the Darkmoon Isle. Took about 4 hours or so of fishing and about 400+ casts. Took about 200 to get the Sea Pony.

I sat in Mulgore for about 8 hours three or four different days and never got anything, so unless I'm VERY unlucky, the new Darkmoon location is much easier!

This achievement seems ridiculously easy to get on Darkmoon Island.

The Steelscale Crushfish has a very high droprate from the waters surrounding the island, and you're likely to get one sooner than you get the Sea Pony.

I fished for about 30 minutes yesterday, only 10 minutes today and got my 15 Pound Mud Snapper. Roughly 100 casts.

NOTE 1: After reading the posts at the start of this thread, then jumping all the way to the end for the latest updates, I saw more than one person mention getting lucky in the two small ponds behind the building in Shadowglen (they're too small to show up on the map but are real easy to find).

NOTE 2: I've been fishing in pools all over Azeroth for years now working on this achievement, not to mention trying to fish up the turtle in the oceans off of Northrend, plus building up the total fishing from pools count for the guild achiev. After reading the posts about Shadowglen and how easy some people had it, I'm surprised at how easy this was!

Well I won the Fishing Tourny, and then set out to get this achievement next. I did a good 2,000-3,000 casts in Howling Fjord for the Dark Herring and the Sea Turtle and got nothing. So I went to Crystal Lake and in less than 200 casts I got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper. I highly recommend you go for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper, data proves it seems to have a higher drop rate, and people seem to have better luck with it as well.

I get the 22 pound Lobster!

My experience is you can catch this rare only the evening.
Because i start fishing between 14:00-14:30 and i catch:

More than 350 simple lobster.
More the 200 Vinter Squid
And more than 150 trash. Clam, Reinforced Locked Chest, and some more.
After that more than 700 catch i got no one even rare Lobster (Like 7 pound or 15 pound or.....)

I made a little rest and start again fishing after 18:00 i got only 80 simple lobster 80-100 another junk and 2 rare Lobster...
And finaly get the 22 Pound big guy.

Today at 13:05:00 I managed to catch Steelscale Crushfish at darkmoon faire boardwalk.
I was fishing at 525 skill + 30 from fishing rod bonus in open waters.

It took me about 500 casts to get it.

Before I spent loads of time in mulgore and howling fjord with no result.
I would recommend fishing in darkmoon faire if you only need achievement.

Well, I don't know if the drop rate on the Dark Herring has been massively boosted or what, but I've managed to catch 2 of them in the lake at Howling Fjord in the past couple days. Total casts to catch both of them (and I'm not joking here) = around 20-25.

After I caught the first one (after 10 casts) I thought I must just be extremely lucky. I went back there today to try to catch the turtle mount and another Dark Herring dropped after around 15 casts.

Although I'm not complaining, having this kind of "luck" seems suspicious - I suspect the drop rate on the herring has been boosted.

Now if only I could have the same luck catching the turtle mount...

Finally got this achievement. It took me 4 days of non-stop farming. I started after the Dark Herring, but gave up after over a thousand casts presented nothing and went after the 15 Pound Mudfish like others had done. I got it after 1068 casts. In total I had 636 - Brilliant Smallfish, 411 - Longjaw Mudsnapper, 7 - Minor Mana Potion, 6 - 10 Pound Mudfish, 6 - Minor Healing Potion, 1 - 12 Pound Mudfish and 1 - 15 Pound Mudfish. I had a huge sigh of relief when it was done, but that is how it works.

Just caught my Dark Herring today. Here is a slight number and time crunch:

Spent approximately 3 hours farming, caught 218 Fangtooth Herring, 138 Pygmy Suckerfish, 10 Reinforced Crates and 7 Crystallized Water and 1 Dark Herring.

Items used:Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (+30 fishing), Weather Beaten Fishing Hat (+5 fishing), and the lure from the hat +75 fishing. I was also 525 fishing skill when i started.

According to my simple math, the percentage of dark herring to fish caught was .004%

Zone: Howling Fjord, Winters Breath Lake, just beneath Gjalerbron, south east of Camp Winterhoof.

At first I was chasing the Dark Herring by fishing in the Fangtooth Herring pools all around Howling Fjord (map).
Got to 889 casts (29%) and then decided this wasn't working. Stopped fishing in pools.

Switched to fish in open water at Winter's Breath Lake -- The lake where the maiden is frozen in the middle.
Here are the stats from catching the other 2264 casts (71%) in the area:

Bonescale Snapper: 1133 - 50%
Fangtooth Herring: 470 - 20%
Glacial Salmon: 355 - 15%
Pygmy Suckerfish: 257 - 11%
Crystallized Water: 29 - 1%
Reinforced Crate: 20 - <1% (Containing Cobalt Ore, Frostweave Cloth of Borean Leather Scraps)
--- TOTAL --- 2264 Casts (71%).

After hours of fishing over a few days I decided to give up and move on to catch something else.
I headed to Elwynn Forest where I read that many people have had luck in catching the 15 Pound Mud Snapper
Fished at both Crystal Lake and Thunder Falls for ~30 mins and caught 74 Raw Brilliant Smallfish and 36 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper

Decided to move again to; this time to Teldrassil where there are two very small lakes in Shadowglen.
Results are as follows:

Raw Brilliant Smallfish: 5 - 55%
Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper: 3 - 33%
15 Pound Mud Snapper: 1 - 11%
--- TOTAL --- 9 Casts (100%)

In conclusion; I was very lucky in this spot. Either that or RNG was on my side.
Just because I caught it in under 9 casts in this spot does not mean you will do the exact same.
It is still 1 in 1000 chance of catching any of these rare fish.

Finally, after years of perseverance, I caught my first rare fish - Steelscale Crushfish. Thought I'd post some of my stats as this was one of the most frustrating, long-awaited achievements I've been after.

Howling Fjord - ~6.3k casts
Stonebull Lake- ~3.2k casts
Darmoon Isle - ~1.3k casts

Total Casts - Approx. 11,000

Started in Northrend at the Fjord to try and double up my chances on catching a rare fish and/or the turtle (which I still have not caught). Eventually tired there and moved to Mulgore like so many have suggested. While I didn't catch any there, I did notice that when it was raining I caught many more 10,12,17 Pound Mudsnapper than usual (I'm sure its just WoW voodoo talking but that was my rng).

Finally, decided to try my luck at DMF grounds. I actually caught the crushfish earlier that day, but for some reason it did not loot it and no credit for the achieve was received. At about the same time some people on the isle were talking in general chat about the dmf daily games bugging (just my luck /frownieface). Continued to fish off the western coast and BAM!; caught my rare.

For all of you out there with terrible rng like myself, I just want to say keep at it! There were countless days I wanted to bash in the screen I was so mad at this achievement. Some days you feel like saying "f#@$ this! I'm cancelling!" But, keep at it and you will get it. My total fish/other things caught is almost at 13,000 and still no turtle. So there are a lot of us out there that don't get lucky and get this with 1,000 casts or less. Like Les Claypool would say... FISH ON!

I followed the advice of the top post and went to Stonbull Lake in Muldor....after killing the Horde Fishing Trainer...i fished.....then killed him again....and fished....this went on for like an hour....but long story short I got the 15lb Mudjaw Snapper in 154 Casts....im so happy.....but if you dont get it this quick....please keep trying....i was just lucky!

Got this as Alliance, fishing in Crystal Lake near Goldshire for the 15 pound Mud Snapper. With the help of the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (Along with its lure ability) and the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole.

According to Xinhuan's post, Xinhuan states that the El's Anglin forums mentions approximately a 1 in 2000 of catching any of the rare fish for the achievement. Tried in Teldrassil for about 500 casts and nothing. Went to Howling Fjord and fished out of pools in the river/lakes and caught a Dark Herring in under 150 casts.

First, I tried to catch the 29 pound salmon despite the 1/10,000 chance to get it (just because I love salmon in real life). I fished in Blasted Lands for about 3 hours and didn't catch any special salmon. I was bored so, I went to Stonebull Lake in Mulgore, to catch the 15 Pound Mud Snapper (around 1% chance of drop). I fished about more 2 hours and I got it! =D

But, before, I caught:

277 - Raw Brilliant Smalfish
174 - Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
5 - 10 Pound Mud Snapper
5 - 12 Pound Mud Snapper
1 - Infantry Belt (mail)
1 - 15 Pound Mud Snapper

Total fished = 463.

That's it. I got my "Salty" title too. And, after the achievement to win a Fishing Contest, this was the hardest one for me. =)

Imo, this achievement really isn't that bad. If you do exactly as Cyst describes above (top comment in this feed), one will get...

LOTS of Brilliant Smallfish

A good amount of Longjaw Mud Snapper

A couple pounders here and there(maybe), for example 10 Pound Mud Snapper or 12 Pound Mud Snapper. Personally, I caught both but many people will never see one.

Maybe a mana potion or two.

After a couple hours, I caught the beauty 15 Pound Mud Snapper, no camping, no fishing for days, none of that nonsense. Just a couple Elixir of Water Walking and my trusty Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat.

It all depends, but I believe that Stonebull Lake in Mulgore is by far the best place to complete One That Didn't Get Away

I'm another that had success at Stonebull Lake. After well over 2000 casts in Winter's Breath Lake trying for the herring, I switched over to Stonebull and caught the 15 lb mud snapper after 432 casts:

244 - brilliant smallfish
174 - mud snapper
6 - 10 lb. mud snapper
5 - 12 lb. mud snapper
2 - minor healing potion
1 - 15 lb. mud snapper

I already had the turtle so went for the 15 pound mud snapper.

Logged into my horde mage and fished at Stonebull lake in Mulgore right in front of the fishing trainer. Caught about 300 things including 10 and 12 pound mud snapper but no 15 pounder.

The next day I logged into an alliance druid and went to Teldrassil. Spent about 150 catches at Lake Al'Ameth and caught about the same stuff. I did notice that the catch rate here was about 55% brilliant smallfish and 45% mud snapper. In Mulgore the it was more like 65% smallfish and 35% mud snapper. So I thought I was onto something.

But then I noticed all the folks talking about Shadowglen. Went there and had my 15 pounder in about 50 catches. Who knows if there is something to this or my RNG simply caught up with me. But if you are frustrated try there fro a bit and see what happens.

54.52 @ Stonebull Lake in Mulgore.

Based on comments here I started fishing for this at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore with a 635 fishing skill, after spending a few hours and about 1500+ casts later I gave up. Two days later I figured I'd give it another shot... and sure enough after about five minutes I got it, a 15 pound mud snapper. It's just sheer luck. Hope that helps

I spent about 30min in mulgore fishing for it before getting a bit bored. I decided to go get all the schools in Northrend and got it from a Dark Herring in the Fangtooth Herring school, first cast.

I was also rather lucky on my pool hunting going over skettis I thought I'd try my luck to get the magical crawdad. I got it Mr Pinchy first cast and the pet I was rewarded on the first cooldown. Wondering if the odds have been recently looked changed?

I've been farming the tastyfish schools that appear during the STV fishing tourney for the rare items that you can turn in for prizes for a few weeks now. Specifically the fish for the boots. Ive already won the event before so idc about winning it. Anyways, today there was about 5min left until the tastyfish schools disappeared, I had been fishing since the tourney started, had gotten no rare fish, and I fished up the Rockhide Strongfish. I got the Accomplished Angler achieve because this was the only achievement I was missing but I was disappointed cus when I saw that I had fished up a green quality item, it got my hopes up thinking I fished one of the rares, which I did. Just not the type of rare I was trying to get >.<

Aside from all that off-topic nonsense, I came to say a good time to try to get one of the rare fish needed for this achievement if you hate sitting somewhere like mulgore just hoping you get one would be during the fishing event in STV because there's multiple things you can acquire during the event.

I just fished up Pesce Clava Scagliacciaio on Darkmoon Island at 67, 93. I was farming for a Sea Pony and was just making my rounds of the island when I just stopped south of the cove. First cast Pesce Clava Scagliacciaio dropped and I got my achievement.

just got this ach to finish of my salty ach , i fished on the darkmoon island and got the steelscale crushfish , not in the pools but open water , took me a long time of fishing , at least 8 hours .. but worth it :) good luck to you all going 4 this ach

im wondering if this achievement is still valid...I have cast over 5k in each one of the areas for each fish with no lucky not a single one. Ive been fishing 12hrs day at dmi for this entire week, on the boardwalk, besides the boardwald, in the water, walking on water, on the ramp, next to the ramp...nothing...nothing at all.

You all are going to Hate me, i followed Cyst's directions and stood on a rock across the river from the fishing trainer. I cast 3 times and caught the 15 pound Mudfish. Granted i have been trying on and off for years but i'm SO glad i saw his post.
