you still have ur head stuck in ICC mode.. where stamina and armor were king tanking stats.. think more along the lines of in TBC.. where tanks actually used avoidance sets to avoid heavy melee as opposed to soaking all the magical dmg that cant be dodged with huge HP pools, and stacking armor to mitigate the heavy hits incoming due to the loss of dodge/agility being gemmed/chanted

Assuming the level 85 Darkmoon Cards are as easy to acquire as their level 80 counterparts, I see this as a decent starter trinket for tanks, basically a level 85 version of Ick's Thumb. Avoidance has always been a good stat in heroics, and that's where this will see the most use. And of course, you can always reforge some of that dodge into Mastery which all tanks value.

I'm not convinced that we've seen the end of tanks stacking armor and stamina, but I bet Blizzard wants to avoid having starter trinkets like the Black Heart and the aptly named Greatness cards be so much better than other higher level trinkets from raid content.

Especially with poor Healer Spell Cost/Mana Regen, a health sink is less favorable than a mitigation/avoidance based tank.

There of course will be encounters that favor higher health pools but over all tanks do need avoidance stats again.

This trinket honestly isn't that good. It might be better for a Feral Druid, since they are big on the dodge, but for other classes I imagine Figurine - Earthen Guardian, Throngus's Finger, and Leaden Despair are probably all better.

The problem is the on use is absolutely terrible. All 3 of the other trinkets have an avoidance/mitigation proc or on use ability, and 11500 HP when tanks are spotting 150k+ unbuffed is worthless.

Even if you could get it cheap, I honestly don't think it'd be worth it, unless you really just couldn't get another trinket.

There was a good point made if you are looking to get yourself started up on some tank gear this trinket in particular is subpar to a LOT of the heroic trinkets even with a mastery reforge. I play a DK tank with 151k hp unbuffed and I can tell you that 11.5k hp on activation is going to save you from just about nothing on a boss.

im not the kind of guy who checks through logs and stuff after a fight but out halfus wyrmbreaker fight even with him having the 100% extra attack speed plus mortal strike effect we where never in any trouble of sudden death and i think his melees where 20k tops! no heroic boss ive ran into has an attack that this tiny bit of extra health would help on maybe there is one or 2 raid bosses with a hit the tank really really hard ability where 11.5k more health would help on but with this trinket probably costing atleast 25k on servers (more on most probably) is it really worth the gold when you can get more useful trinkets ie a straight stam trinket if you need more health or an avoidance trinket with a much better on use or proc

change it to something like throngus finger..my current favourite trinket proc

it might be useful for dks who can pop it then do a heap of deathstrikes with each returning 10 (or is it15%) of their max health giving each deathstrike an additional 1150 healing! over 15 seconds (assuming you somehow do 10 deathstrikes in a row..not possible i think?) thats 11500...still not that impressive!

I'm seriously looking at this trinket for my DK. She's a Dranei, so her Icebound Fortitude is macro'ed to her Gift of the Naaru, and since this trinket has the same cooldown time and is independent of those other things, I'll just add this to the same macro. The extra 6% health isn't too bad, and if it pops when Icebound Fortitude is on and Gift of the Naaru is churning away then you've got much better odds of surviving an enraged boss or a nasty pack of mobs. Other than the Icebound Fortitude, neither the Gift of the Naaru nor the trinket would be worth activating by themselves--too much to focus on otherwise--but when they're on the same button it's very powerful. Same thing with a bear--great to macro this to Frenzied Rejuvenation and/or Survival Instincts.

In any fight, the tank's health is basically doing a random walk as the boss hits it and the healer pushes back. When the tank uses something like Icebound Fortitude, 30% damage reduction doesn't mean the tank is 30% more likely to survive--a better approximation is that the tank's health becomes about 1.3*1.3 = 1.69, or 69% less likely to hit zero during a series of attacks. Add some additional heals or give the tank's random walk a chance to journey to a point further from zero (+11.5k max health) and the chance of survival goes up even further.

That amount of health would worth less then 1k stamina, while dps trinkets give close to 2k Str/Agi. To make it somewhat on pair it would have to be like 30k HP or a bit more.

Summary:
In trying to price these decks in response to another thread I did the following math based on my thousands of mills, results from three scribes who have spent about 200k total crafting cards, and WoWHead's data. On average completing one deck will cost over 20k; the best possible price, the very minimum from mats if you defied statistical odds and got the 8 cards you needed in a row, is about 15.2k. I would personally price these decks at 25k until herb prices fall by about 50%.

Details:
On my server (yes it of course varies server to server) Twilight Jasmine and Whiptail are consistently priced at about 10g each. The other lower quality Cata herbs go for at least 5-6g each and have half the pigment/ink yield as Whiptail and Twilight Jasmine. Volatile Life seems to vary but lately is usually right around 9-11g. By my math it takes about 8 stacks of Whiptail or Twilight Jasmine (trading the lower ink in for Inferno Ink in Dalaran) or 16 stacks of the other lower quality herbs (again, trading ink in to make Inferno Ink), plus 30 volatile life to make 1 random card. I get that 8/16 stack result assuming from my own personal data from several thousand mills that you get, on average, about 6 lower inks per 20 high quality herbs and about 1 Inferno ink per 20 high quality herbs (or, if you're using lower quality Cata herbs, 3 lower quality inks per 20 herbs and half an Inferno Ink). My data seems to match WoWHeads (see, e.g., this link and this link).

So...

8 stacks of higher quality herbs = 10g each x 20 herbs per stack = 200/stack x 8 stacks = 1600g + (30 volatile life x10g each = 300g) so 1900g per card.

Similarly, 16 stacks of lower quality herbs = 5g x20 herbs per stack = 100g x 16 stacks = 1600g + (30 volatile life x10g each = 300g) so again, about 1900g per card.

It takes 8 cards, Ace through Eight of the same suit, to make 1 deck. That means that making 1 deck, even if you got all 8 cards you needed on the first 8 tries, would cost 15200g.

However, it's very very very unlikely that you would make 8 cards and get the 8 you needed. You're much more likely to get cards in other random suits, or even to get duplicates of what you already have in the suit of the deck you want.

Finally, even assuming that a given scribe can afford to invest, say, 60k to have a chance to make all 4 decks that scribe is unlikely to actually make 4 decks. He or she is more likely to instead complete a deck or two and have a host of duplicates. My friend has spend 70k using the same numbers I quoted above as the max price he'd pay for herbs and has only completed 1 deck - he has double, triples, even quadruples of many other cards. I know a second scribe that has spent 90k and completed 3 decks (but not the main one he wanted yet) and is 3 cards away from completing the deck he was trying to make and has several duplicates and triplicates of other deck cards (but still several cards away from making any more decks yet). So in other words, every Scribe making decks to use or sell takes a large risk that he or she won't finish the deck needed for a long time, requiring substantial additional investment (e.g. an additional 10-30k).

For me, the moral of this story is that since it costs at a minimum 15.2k worth of mats to make a deck, and it takes a very long time to make a deck since 15.2k worth of Inscription crafting mats don't usually appear in your hands overnight, 20k is the minimum price I expect these to go for. Scribes have to invest too much time, resources, and absorb too much risk for 20k to be the normal price. I think 25k-30k is more likely. But, that's a lot of gold. So even if they are worth 30k they could well end up at 25k just based on the fact that 30k is a pretty huge amount of gold for most players.

EDIT: As another user accurately explained elsewhere:

Low herbs : High herbs are really more like 1 : 1.6 inferno inks because of the numbers of Blackfallows made. Each stack of 20 low herbs gives, on average, half an Inferno ink and 5 Blackfallows. A stack of 20 high herbs gives, on average, 1 Inferno ink and 6 Blackfallows. Since Blackfallows convert to infernos at a rate of 10 to 1, you get 1 Inferno ink per stack of low herbs and 1.6 Inferno inks per stack of high herbs.

Buying low herbs at 5g a stack is going to be more efficient, in the long run, than buying high herbs at 10g a stack.

The math for @lvl is not updated on the site yet. Looked at my Character screen show i had 312 dodge rating which added 1.77% dodge. I was hoping this was correct, but now seeing it's only going to give me about 2% dodge. I'll go hunt down a Stam trinket.

For Paladins at least, the Volcano card might actually be better. We get more from Mastery (block) then Avoidance stats with DR; the on use effect is useful in certain situations, but not very much so. Something to think about, and possibly use both if you have nothing else.

For me the biggest hurdle to get past in this trinket isn't the stat, or the cost. It's the fact that it's a battlemaster's trinket on a 3 minute cooldown. That is what makes it garbage. To give you a little bit of an idea where I'm coming from I'm a prot pally that currently has 150,923 health unbuffed. That means that this trinket at best gives me a 7.4% (closer to 7.35% but I'm being generous) increase in health for 15 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown. Health is only going to go up from here and this is not even big enough to be considered a drop in the bucket. Guardian of Ancient Kings gives me a 50% reduction of all incoming damage for 12 seconds on a 3 minute cooldown, and this goes up to 18 seconds I believe with 4 piece T11. Not very good when you compare the two.

What could be done to improve this trinket you might ask? A few things are possible.

1) Change the on use to last 10 seconds on a 1 minute cooldown.
2) Change the stat given on it so that it is more useful to all tanks and doesn't get eaten alive by diminishing returns.
3) Scrap the whole thing and make a new one that is actually on par with the benefits that other classes can get.

Overall though it seems very little thought went into the stats on most of the tanking gear that's available. The only trinkets that are really worth while are those that more or less obeyed the guidelines that were true in wrath. I'm not particularly fond of the Bedrock Talisman trinket that increases armor less than some ICC trinkets did, and only procs when you are below 35% health. I'd almost want to go back and kill putricide 10 man even on normal mode to get that trinket because the Bedrock Talisman is such garbage.

Hell, even at this point I'd take the trinket from the Volcano deck over this one. Mostly though it seems blizz pandered to most DPS and healers when it came to darkmoon cards, but left tanks for the most part high and dry.

As a feral tank I think this is &*!@ the way it is now. The on-use is barely noticeable and due to the high diminishing returns on dodge, I`d be lucky if I`d get 1% out of it. A much more useful option would be to have an absorb effect, proc or on-use, like a Holly Shield or something, that could absorb something around 100k dmg for 15-20 sec.

I can't say it's a great trinket for a blood DK, but as a replacement for one of crap trinkets, it's not bad. The avoidance stat is nice and the health gain on use means I can burst heal for more, but the process of getting it isn't really worth it.

Next time do a little research and see that he made that comment in the Cataclysm Beta in early October which was well before Bear mastery got nerfed and it was still pretty much the best stat for a bear druid to stack. Even in wrath this kind of buff was rather very weak in its usefulness (Satrina's/Juggernaut's trinkets from ToC).

People saying its not good for tanks now. You guys are forgetting about combos with trinkets. Last stand Trinket and enraged regeneration. So i heal my self doe a crap load and let my healers have a little bit of breathing room to catch back up if a fight is taking its toll on them. Think about all things for a tanking class not just the trinkets it all adds up.

extra health is great but if you beleive the health bonus is so great why not stack stam and have a trink with an avoidance proc. You wouldn't because stam while useful it does nothing to save your healers mana which is the primary concern atm for most people.

personally i prefer the heroic Skardyn's Grace to this as it will save my healers mana with the mastery use while giving me close to 0.6% less dodge but an extra 0.4% chance to proc my savage defence and every sheild will absorb 475 more damage every time it does proc and thats before using the on use ability.

My problem with Carte de Sombrelune : Séisme isn't much to do with it being dodge rating at all. Avoidance is great.

The issue is that the on-use itself is garbage when standing alone. Yes there are some combos to make it more valuable between cooldowns and other trinkets, but overall it's underwhelming, and requires too much support to really appreciate.

I'd sooner take Crabe en porcelaine the dodge difference isn't much, and the secondary effect is much more desirable.

Or Désespoir plombé , Doigt de Throngus or even Figurine de gardien terrestre for the Jewelcrafters.

Why couldn't they at least give this a useful proc like the Strength and Agility cards have? These cards are absurdly expensive to make. They should at least be competitive with other options.

Dodge is a great stat for tanking, and especially so in Cataclysm. However, what kills this trinket is the almost useless on-use effect, especially given the over-long cooldown for Battlemaster trinkets. The health buff is especially weak compared to the proc on the Hurricane cards.

As a feral tank, i just can't seem to decided about this trinket. I crafted it while making other decks so it was a zero cost addition. I even reforged to make some dodge into mastery but it is down right MEH.

Anyone feel it is worth it or should I just sell it for 3k to get my material cost back...........

Bosses in Cata do not one-shot kill tanks anymore (if the mechanics are well known and trained), hence the HP sink tanks are not needed.

All fights in Cata is avoidance based. A tank mindlessly gemmed and enchanted into sta only will fail...

As a DK tank (or other tanks for that matter), Blizzard has not given us a very good selection for available pre-raid epic trinks if you aren't a JC or Alchemist. 346 trinks still out-shine.

*DK's still focus primarily on passive stamina and mitigation-DR(armor) + absorption(mastery). Avoidance isn't our forte, but we still need a modest amount.

Let's have a look:
Darkmoon Card: Earthquake = dodge is ok.. it's not stam/mit/abs/parry.. our least desirable stat, but not bad. The 'on-use' hp increase actually isn't the most terrible thing for a DK. It's not a great boost, but used in conjunction with Vampiric blood + rune tap and you'll have quite a heal. However, the 3-minute CD makes this much less desirable.

Bedrock Talisman = While armor is great, the armor budget is sub-par for 359 ilevel compared to the point value of mastery and dodge/parry (as others have noted, maintankadin ), and doesn't compete with 482 stamina or 321 mastery for a DK. At my armor value of 29546 (ilvl 352 tank), this provides me and extra 2.3% passive damage reduction. The proc, again is dodge. The trinket Impetuous Query provides a much better secondary than this dodge proc. The higher amount of parry to dodge plus the 'on-use' capability make this i333! trinket better than this 359 in question. Not to mention, Figurine - Earthen Guardian gives more dodge, for twice as long, as an 'on-use', meaning you can use it before you know you're about to take a lot of damage (i.e. Throngus's swords phase) to try to avoid it, rather than chancing that you'll be hit below 35% hp and hope the proc then avoids his next killing blow...

You may ask, "Well we're less concerned with survival at 60% hp than we are at 35% hp." Yes, sure. However, that's not a tank's only concern. Our skill and wit are in large part responsible for the survival of the entire group. Healers only have so much mana and can heal only so much at a time. When everyone else is taking damage constantly as well, the tank has a responsibility to mitigate as much damage as possible- ALL the time. If you got to <35% hp, then the healer is stressing heals on you and not the dps, whom may also be in imminent danger of death, while using your trinket beforehand may have avoided you losing so much health in the first place.

Mirror of Broken Images = This passive amount of mastery is nice. However, the 'on-use' for a DK is redundant. We have far less a need to use a second magic mitigation ability in 45-second span. Though there are times it would be useful, we want something we can use on every boss fight.

None of these have stamina; none of them have parry; none of them have a worthy amount of armor, especially since our armor just received a nerf in 4.06. Yes, armor has a little more point value now to a DK, but I'm not settling for these scraps of armor. Why do only the profession trinkets get the stamina? They also get better than average procs for the same ilvl.

Leaden Despair = This is the best pre-raid available trinket imo for a DK tank (w/out JC/Alch).

***Stamina increases our healing via Death Strike, which increases our Blood Shield, along with improving these talents: Vengeance, Plate Specialization, Veteran of the Third War, Blood Presence, Vampiric Blood, Rune Tap and Death Pact.
The proc on this one is decent. At my armor amount, this provides ~6.2% damage reduction for 10s with only a 30s ICD. I believe the value of these types of procs would increase significantly if the @35% trigger were changed to @45%.

Throngus's Finger is probably a DK's other choice.
If Darkmoon Card: Earthquake becomes a 1-minute CD for PVE on or before the release of 4.1, then I would consider it.

Other tanks are itemized differently and won't be able to correlate all this info with their own gear choices.

note that it's about a third weaker than the bloodthirsty gladiator pvp trinkets on use.

you are right that there are noticeably fewer tanks than dps, possibly even fewer than healers.
Ideally these and the healing trinket cards should have had a 30-50% lower 'drop' chance than their dps alternatives.

It's not a BAD trinket, macro the on use to some other defensive ability and you'll use it a fair bit.

People are always looking at this as black and white. "Use this to get 11.5k life", when in actuallity there are a great many things that you can add 11.5k life too. Self heals are one, instead of increasing your life by 11.5k you can add on to other potions / elixirs to make a 50k heal. And as I've mentioned before thats every 3 mintues. A 30-50k heal on yourself every 3 minutes should not be over looked. Healers will thank you for making their lives easier.

Although I'm a pure pvp prot pally, I don't spend time doing pve raids anymore. This is just what I would do if I had this trinket =).

At this point, this is a great card if you are trying to get your ilvl up on your tank alt, as it is currently selling for about 1500g on us-blackrock.

This card needs to have a mastery proc, and then it would probably (definitely) be more in demand. THe on use health increase is ... meh

Porcelain Crab is also very nice for a DK tank. Reforge dodge to mastery. According to the comments on Porcelain Crab's page, has a 10% chance per attack to proc, and a 1 min 20 sec ICD. (According to sidelsky18 in those comments, it's a 25% uptime if it procs every time it goes off CD, 16-18% uptime in standard usage so roughly 290 mastery on average)

Tanks are at a premium, we don't need to wait, we don't need to blow gold on AH trinks to get a raid spot.
Any tank trink that drops is pretty much ours, which is why this card sells for 4k on my server whilst the others go for 12-25k

Supply and demand, I feel as a scribe that Stones cards drop way more than any other card, and as such the supply outweighs the demand.

Death knights take a lot more damage than every other tank bud. We don't avoid nearly as much damage as other tanks because that's not how we're designed.

We are a tank class now that heals and absorbs damage, and avoids less.

With 200k hp, 2 Death Strikes will give us a minimum of 28k in heals, often times more than this from damage taken.
In addition, with 19.85 mastery, I get a blood shield that absorbs 124% of what I just healed myself for- so a shield that will mitigate another ~35k damage.

That's 63k in healing that we won't need from a healer - and more importantly, 63k that is vital to us staying alive because that is how we mitigate damage compared to other tanks who are simply avoiding that.
DK's have more work to do to stay alive. If we don't use DS constantly we are dead tanks.

What's more, is we can DS at least twice every 10s, and more with Runic Empowerment procs from RS. This is a big deal, my friend.
And in case you didn't hear, the blood shields stack now. Quite nice.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of tank trinkets, specifically the guy who stated "I want something to use every fight". Tanks should have different sets of gear for different bosses (eg, Mitigation set, Soak/Magic set, Avoidance set) and the simplest most effective method of achieving this is having different trinkets to switch out. So while this trinket is not absolutely ideal for every situation, and doesn't stand up to the higher level raid items, it certainly has it's place for a new/offspec tank to pick up easily if they have a boss where they're weak on avoidance or need a bit more health on demand.
