I'm only level 67 atm but here's my situation: I spent about 500g on items and jewelcrafting and I still have 1300g. I'm not entirely sure how, but it seems like theres a lot of BOE blues dropping 4-5 so far and all the quest rewards vend for 4-8g on top of the 3-10 you get from the quest. It adds up really fast.

If you're worried about the high cost of this mount, don't worry. I had approximately 3,000 gold saved up before TBC, leaving only 3,200 more gold to ride an epic mount in the Outlands (5000 Artisan + 1000 Expert + 200 mount). Since TBC came out, I've been able to get as much as 2,500 gold from quests, selling quest rewards and world drops, and almost no grinding / farming. Mats are horridly overpriced on the AH, so pick up mining/herbalism/skinning and list your junk! Good luck.

Money shouldn't be a problem.
If you do all quests in every area and also grind some, for example farm motes, then you should be 70 by the time you complete the quests in Blades edge.
By playing this way you have Netherstorm and Shadowmoon left at 70 and the rewards for 250-300 quests will be money, thousands of gold.
The quests there will also be easier since you're a few levels higher than the average player.
I left Blade's edge when i turned 69, but i had many quests left there. I also left quests unsolved in most of the previous areas.
I have grinded through a total of about 1-1½ level since i came to outland.
Not the fastest way to get to 70, but you make more money afterwards so you can buy this riding skill earlier.

The riding skill cost 5000g and can be brought/learned in Shadowmoon valley

I quested to lvl 70...period. i do not recomend it tho, because what i SHOULD have done was done NOTHING BUT INSTANCES until 70, because there you would get a lot more gold, and plus, the 5 heroic key reputations: HH/Thrallmar, Cenarion Expedition, Lower City, Sha'tar, and Keepers of Time, would already be at least to maybe at least high friendly/low honored rep. you could then do easy quests for easy money and REALLY FREEKIN easy rep, so that you can get all of your heroic keys by the time you are done, a good amoun of money to get your epic flying (if not all) and on your way to exalted with all 5 of these places, which give great new armor/weapons/shoulder slot items/gems/tabards/patterns and plans and recipes etc...
this is what should be done to make things easy for you later on. it took me 2 and a half weeks after TBC came out to get to 70 so i was unaware of this situation, learn from our mistakes

You will need 5000 gold (5200 gold if your buying this and the mount at the same time), Artisan Riding skill is required for the Swift Windriders, Swift Gryphons, Netherdrakes, Ashes's of A'lar (i.e. phoenix mount), the holiday item Swift Flying Broom and the patch 2.3 mounts which are the Hippogrpyhs and the Epic Engineer mount which is called the Turbo-Charged Flying Machine Control. It will say after the name of the item Requires Riding (300). You will also need this skill to start the dailies with the Netherwing.

Can anyone confirm that as of 2.3 the 5% friendly discount will apply to artisan riding skill, making the cost around 4750G? If so I'll wait for the patch. If this is true does the same discount apply to the cost of the epic mount?

I started playing WoW just 2-3 months befor TBC went live. So i had no chance on saving up money to buy a Epic flying mount or the riding skills to ride one ( even more i didnt even know you could fly). Anyway, as for somone who now knows from expierience, i would suggest anyone who is going to want to make as much money the fastest way possible and gaining rep the fastest way possible would be grinding it by doing Instinces first, and gathering herbs, leather, DE items, minerals, fish, or any motes and sell em. By the time your 68-70 you should be almost honored or in the middle of honored to most places leaving you to do very easy quests in thoes areas to get to exaulted AND gain maximum gold (6-10g) a quest. If i knew this befor i hit 70 doing all the quest in Hellfire as soon as possible i would have made so much more money. Hope this helps all thoes 58 lv char feeling discouraged at the 5k gold cost.

Here's something you might find interesting.
A mount with +60% movement speed decreases the time of your travel by 37.5%. ( example:
Pinto Bridle
)
A mount with +100% movement speed decreases the time of your travel by 50%. ( example:
Swift Warstrider
)
A mount with +280% movement speed decreases the time of your travel by ~74%. ( example:
Swift Green Gryphon
)
A mount with +310% movement speed decreases the time of your travel by ~76%. ( example:
Ashes of Al'ar

. Right after you become exalted just talk to one of the Nether Drakes in Shattrah the they will become your mount.

For those who are endlessly saving up for their epic flying mount without any result, try this.
As of patch 2.4 there are daily quests available both on the Isle of Quel'Danas and in Outland. Start by doing the outland daily quests, these will reward you with money and Shattered Sun Supply bags. These bags will ALWAYS contain an uncommon item. Save these uncommon items until you have about 10-15 of them and let an enchanter disenchant them. DO NOT VENDOR THEM!
While doing the outland daily quests (the SSO ones) try to farm some primals. When I'm doing the quests at the Throne of Kil'jaeden I try to get at least 3 Primal Fires. When I'm doing the quest at Oshu'Gun, I'm farming at least one Primal Shadow. When doing the quest in Blade's Edge, I farm at least one Primal Mana. When you've done all these quests, go to Silvermoon or Ironforge, find an enchanter to Disenchant your greenies, put the dusts, essences and primals on the auction house and fly to the Isle of Quel'Danas.
Do all your daily quests there, try to get a Primal Mana from the sentries and then return to a city! You can easily earn hundreds of golds using this method.
Use your spare time by doing the Skyguard and Ogri'la daily quests or farm more primals and you'll have your mount in no time.
Edit: Thanks to sean0883

I recommend saving ALL quests in Blades Edge until after you hit 70 and complete the Ogri'la prequests. Then you can go back and do the quests in Blades Edge, and receive a good amount of gold per quest, and a good number of the quests will be extremely easy since none of the ogres in BEM will automatically attack you when you come by. Easy money, since about half of Blades Edge is overrun with ogres of some sort.

This is probably going to be the last riding you can probably obtain, sure they have said you can "maybe" fly in Northrend but are they going to let you fly for free? Nope, its another money sinkhole plot from blizzard which is a spell called "Artic Flying". It trains your flying mount to fly in Northrend (so no your ground mount needs no training) which is going to be learnable at about level 77-78. It's probably going to cost around 1000-2000g and before you start whining think of all the dailies you can do at the moment, and with all the gold you'll be getting from the quests 70-80, so its not that much of a big deal.

Be sure to take in to consideration that a player with gathering professions will benefit more from the speed increase of your new epic flyer. If your main character is an enchanter/tailor, consider getting the epic flyer for your altlernate character that has gathering professions first. Getting your second epic flyer will come much sooner.
Professions that benefit:
Herbalism
Mining
Engineering using (
Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
)

I just hit 80 (after about 10 or so quests in the Basin out in WotLK), and I have 1400 gold saved up since level 70 (I believe I started with 150-200ish). Other than training skills, and doing a little of enchant selling on the AH, I've not spent anything.
(or wait, sorry, I bought Cold Weather Flying)
Do most of you think since I have the rest of Shalozar and ALL of Icecrown and Storm Peaks as gold for questing left, that I'll hit 5000 gold pretty easiy? After just 1 zone, or both? I also try to do the dailies as much as I can/DE and sell enchants as often as they are still letting me skill up.
Thanks as always.

Also i do mining and tailoring (my tailoring is too low make any money off of), so all i can make money of is the ore i mine so how much saronite and of what price in the ah would it take to get 5kg?

If you have problems getting enought money for epic flying try this:
While I'm leveling my other character, I do every day dailys of Argent Tournament for around 140G/½ hour. Every fourth day I also make 2 x Ebonweaves. It is really easy way making money, at the moment I have done 2K from Argent Tournament + ebonweaves, then my alt gets also ~2K from Northrend quests atleast which should bring me to Artisan Flying.

Hira Snowdawn
in Dalaran or
Ilsa Blusterbrew
in Shadowmoon Valley are not affiliated with the Valiance Expedition or Honor Hold so they will not give any faction-based discounts. However, Hargen Bronzewing in Honor Hold (he's just behind the Flight Master, in the stables) and Maigra Keenfeather in Valiance Keep (also just behind the Flight Master) give the promised faction discounts.
(These NPCs are not present in Wowhead's database at the moment and I don't have access to a Horde character to locate their affiliated trainers.)
Also note Maigra's discount is based off of your Valiance Expedition reputation, while Hargen's discounts are based off of your Honor Hold status. Both trainers offer
Apprentice Riding
,
Journeyman Riding
,
Expert Riding
, and
Artisan Riding
, but neither will train you for
Cold Weather Flying
. Cold Weather Flying can only be purchased at the full 1000 gold price tag.

If you don't have CWF and still would like to fly {somewhat} in Northrend, you can visit "Honest" Max (@ K3) and recieve a "Loaned Gryphon Reins" (if you are Alliance) or "Loaned Wind Rider Reins" (if you are Horde) for FREE! You need to be 77 and CWF skill free. It has it's catches, however, it helps if you are still saving up for that 1000g blow to the head. 8D

This specifically refers to post patch 3.2. Anyone know why my druid's flight form is still 150% after buying Artisan Riding? I heard you didn't need to do the quest line ending in defeating Ikiss in Heroic Sethekk Halls. Therefore, I should be flying my birdie at 280%, not 150%.
FOLLOW UP: Once I learned Artisan Riding, Swift Flight Form cost me 17g at the trainer. Guess no questline is needed.

Ah, that's just great... Riding in cataclysm still the same, at least they could lower the price for the Artisan Riding from 5000Gold to 2000-1000Gold. That would be better for everybody.
Or when you learn your Master Riding( you wouldn't need artisan), your 150% fly mount would be 280% mount and your 280% would be 310%. This is a good idea, too... at least for me.

Yeah, which is really sad. Whenever I see someone ask in trade chat how to make money I gladly lay it out for them that gathering professions are the way to go. So few people do this and it's so easy/effective that it's ridiculous. You can always abandon them later if you are set on having a profession like engineering or whatever.
Now rep is incredibly easy to get too. Exalted org/sw? 4k gold epic flying, etc. My last two characters got exalted with orgrimmar (wearing the tabard) by level 25 and 39. The level 25 was grinding a few dungeons, the one who got it by 39 doing them casually. Basically, so freaking easy to get exalted and the max rep discount that nobody should not be able to do that either (assuming they are smart).
Furthermore, gold is ridiculously easy to get now. Back in bc, epic flying was actually an achievement and slightly hard to get. Gold was way more difficult to accumulate. And if you wanted to farm for it, you rode your max level (70) flier that goes 60% speed (and cost like 1100g for the training/mount back then) around a zone for hours, day after day after day, farming adamantite ore or similar to slowly and painfully get gold. Nowadays, I give my new characters 2 gathering professions and they rack in 500g in a day selling the copper + light leather they farm while leveling up the professions. It's ridiculous. Then mithril sells for insane amounts and is disgustingly easy to farm too, even at low lvls. Zones were changed so it isn't like : Thousand Needles : has some copper, some tin, some iron. Now it's Thousand Needles: ALL mithril. It's incredibly easy and fast to farm stuff and it's worth ridiculous amounts.
Maybe an average new player doesn't figure out how to do this. But it's not hard to figure it out with a few mins spent looking online or asking someone who is willing to help. Instead you get swarms of them coming to this page to cry about the price instead of just trying even a little bit.
I made a dk on my brother's server he transferred to, just for the hell of it. (starting at 55). By 71 I had epic flying and 3k gold left over. Without a decent rep discount because you can't farm tabard rep in bc dungeons, it automatically gives you bc rep (thrallmar, etc). I farmed mithril, etc for a day or two and it was as easy as that. It's a low pop server so it took a while for some of it to sell, and I kept farming in the meantime while queuing for BGs. Once everything sold that's how I had 3k over the amount I actually needed. That's how easy it is. Start at 55 with nothing, get 7k+ gold by level 71. (leveled doing BGs).
90% of people probably didn't read this far, but good for you if you did.

I find it kind of strange (but deal with it) that artisan riding is 4000g, there is no possible way to make 4000g before you hit level 70 just by questing, even with the helm/shoulders/staff/cloak/chest and 2 trinkets allowing me to sell tons of quest rewards, I've only netted the cost of training all spells on my priest up to 70, 4 needed glyphs, expert/cold weather and flight masters license (needed to send myself 40g for that when I was able to train it) and currently sit on 391g on this character
Master riding should be the luxury here not artisan but I always end up dropping the gold on both anyway
