Many people believe that all three OOX beacons are are more likely to drop off humanoids than other mob types. The drop rates are very low whatever the case, but if you sort the "Dropped by" list according to drop count, you can see that humanoids do seem to drop it about twice as often as other mobs, at least for the Hinterlands beacon. If you're farming for this beacon, focus on one or more of the Vilebranch camps in the area.

That only means that more drops have been recorded from said mobs. Yes, they may "have dropped" this item "about twice as often" - but you have to consider they've been killed about ten times as often.
I find it unlikely that there is any magic to this other than that this item is a zone drop - as random as a world drop, but limited to the zone (with of course rares slightly more likely to drop it because they will always drop a green quality or better item from their loot table).

After doing every single quest available for horde, getting 2 BoE blue drops and over 30g worth of humanoid farming, this finally dropped right when I was leaving the zone. Dropped from vilebranch headhunter in jintha'alor

According to the Wow Armoury
http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=8704
this has an equal drop rate of 1-2% of almost everything in the zone, so I'd say any deviation from this can just be put down to chance. That said, I picked up the other 2 easy enough, and have managed to do every quest in Hinterlands without seeing this on my lock.

doing all three of these and turning them in will give you a BUNCH of xp. just the last quest where you get the pet mechanical chicken gave me 10500. (correct me if i'm wrong). it's kind of time consuming, but worth it and really good for the xp, i think. the drop rate of the beacons isn't really that bad if you're doing quests in the area(s). i had all of them drop for me at least two or three times.

After spending 4 hours destroying the entire troll population of the Hinterlands, I picked off a Silvermane Wolf that randomly aggro'd me, and it dropped the beacon.
I also recieved 2 world BoE Blues, a rare-qualityLeatherworking pattern, an uncommon Jewelcrafting design that yields a rare-quality ring, and enough Wildvine Recipes to make a bonfire in-game (if that was possible) leading up to the aquisition of this beacon.
Moral of the story:
It can drop off of anything, don't try to dedicate farming time to getting the beacon
. Just quest like normal (aiming for the Loremaster achievement while you're there) and you're bound to find it eventually.

If you loot this item and find the chicken, turn in the q but then don't do the escort quest, you don't have to re-loot the beacon if you decide to do it later. The chicken will wait for you with the escort quest.

I spent 3 days farming for this, confused because none of the others were this hard.
Then I realized I'd found it at level 45 and never completed the escort. I'm dumb.
If you're a high level like me going back to complete this quest, make sure you haven't found it already. You can kill all the mobs you want and it just won't drop. Do yourself a favor. Don't be like me.

It is entirely possible that the mobs that are killed for later quest chains have an understated drop rate due to their being killed by a higher percentage of people who already found it.

I had been farming for the beacon all over the place for a few days. I decided to read people's comments and was excited when someone gave coordinates. I knew the chance of it showing up in the same place twice was probably as likely as lightning, but I tried anyway. Lo-and-behold, 5 mintues of farming led to a wolf at 18.5, 49.8 dropping the beacon. The first time I checked the location nothing dropped, but after a re spawn it did. perhaps a patten..?

I am now on a mission: To kill all of the Hinterlands.
I hunted and quested there all through my 40s and early 50s. I came back several times in my 70s. I returned last night at 80 and killed Jintha'Alor twice (once on the way up, and on the way back down.) I have yet to see my beacon. My tailor was giddy about the tons of Mageweave I threw her way, but my beacon is as of yet undiscovered.
So tonight, I shall start at Aerie Peak, and start killing things one by one, moving from one creature to another, slaughtering all things in my path and leaving behind a bloody swath of destruction until that damn beacon drops. Do you hear me, Blizzard? You have been warned, and now the Hinterlands will face my wrath!
::EDIT::
Okay, so not only does my luck SUCK, apparently I'm bugged or something. I was farming the daylights out of this place with my husband's DK, since he's never done the chicken-escort quests before. Ten minutes of killing things, and it drops for him off of one of the coastal turtles. I was right next to him when it died, but I COULDN'T LOOT THE BEACON. D:
We tried to kill stuff in Feralas for another beacon, to see if I could loot that one or not and see if it's just THIS beacon that's bugged, but got nothing for an hour. He hadn't yet turned in the completion for the Hinterlands bird in Booty Bay, so we're not sure if that "disqualified" him or not, so we're gonna go back and kill more stuff in Feralas/Tanaris and see if he gets another beacon and I do/don't. If I don't get the beacon when another drops for him, I'm gonna put in a GM ticket and see what's up with that. :-\
Now if you all will excuse me for a bit, I'm going to curl up under my desk and gibber quietly to myself...
::EDIT2::
*Facedesk!* *Facedesk!* *Facedesk!* *Facedesk!* *Facedesk!*
So, I was out in Feralas about a half an hour ago, killing a bunch of things for one of the Feathermoon quests, going for my Loremaster title. What drops? A beacon! But I was sure that I'd completed the Feralas escort quest. So I find the chicken, lead him to safety, and turn in the quest at Mr. Obnoxious. What does he have for me now? A chicken for me! I'd already done the Hinterlands one! No wonder the stupid thing never dropped for me, and I didn't get it when my husband did. The chicken is now mine and the Hinterlands is free from my wrath. So, as a lesson to you all, if the drop rate seems to suck, go to one of the other two locations and start killing things, just for kicks. You tend to forget things when you haven't done something in 40 levels and two years........

first 2 beacons dropped faster then i recall. 2% sounds about right.
this one i killed enough wolves to make a red meat boat to go to stormwind and feed every toon there.
i then read comments, i been in hinterlands 4 days.. grinding on EVERYTHING.. going back and forth..nadda
then i decided to go hit the slimes at the camp nothing..
so then i get so frustrated and bored... i go to green sludge at the sludge camp (46,42)
and just go nuts killing and slaying masses.. the screen was a glittering.. and bam.. 3rd sludge the beacon dropped...
its there.. just takes time.. i believe its very random.

but it makes us engies very VERY happy.

GM said i had handed in the hinterlands one but not done the escort...
So i headed to hinterlands and done it.... then went to tanaris to do that one as it was the nearest.... got the beacon on the FIRST kill....
I am wondering if you can't get a second beacon if you have not compoleted one of the other escorts?
Heading to felaras soon to see if i get the drop quicker this time ;)
To sum up.... deffo ticket a GM to see what you have done before and make sure you have completed the escorts before you head to the others :)
Yeah, just got it on 5th kill of the ogres near the cave :))

I decided to see if I could find this beacon. I have the other two. When I read that someone got it from a turtle on the coast of the Hinterlands, I went there since I can use the zesty clam they drop. After a while of slaughtering, a
Saltwater Snapjaw
dropped it at 81.6/43.4. I was surprised since I'd forgotten what I was there for! LOL. My gnome mage is lvl 50 and the lvl 49-50 turtles were good for grinding.
And, if you must toss something from your bags during this, toss the tails. The grey item scales bring in over 45s for a pile of 5 while the grey item tails bring in just over 7s per 5. I made quite a chunk o' change! The zesty clam went into the
Clamlette Magnifique
which raised my cooking about 15 points by the time I was done. The turtle meat went into the
Soothing Turtle Bisque
(which didn't raise my cooking but I like to use it). I also got several black pearls and a golden pearl and a
blacksmithing recipe
.
Also meant to add that there's an island to the north. I went there for giggles and found a clickable object called "
Lard's Picnic Basket
". It is a Horde quest but Alliance can still click on it. However, this makes 2 lvl 49 Vilesomething Kidnappers appear. They don't drop anything and there was nothing in the basket, at least not for my Alliance toon.

After completing every quest in the zone, and still not seeing this item drop, I set my timer and kill counter and started grinding. I wiped out the Saltwater Snapper population, killing the named twice, then set out to commit war-crimes level genocide against the Vilebranch trolls. After an hour and three minutes, and over 250 kills, it finally dropped off a Vilebranch Wolk Pup. Couldn't decide if I was angry or happy.

There's an obvious reason for which the drop rate recorded is higher on the lower-level mobs:
This never drops after you've gotten the quest. So if it's equally likely off each mob, then you're more likely to see it on the first mobs you kill than on later mobs. So people probably see it more off the mobs near aerie peak.

This quest, as well as the other two OOX escorts have gotten much shorter. Originally, the quest had you escort the chicken through three ambushes to The Overlook Cliffs. Post 3.2, you only have to go through one ambush, decreasing the length (And frustration) down to a third of what it used to. The quest ends directly south of Skulk Rock along the road.
This was an un-noted change in the latest patch.

I contacted a GM before I started farming for the beacon because I couldn't remember if I had ever gotten it before. I did check the chicken beforehand and there was no quest. The GM said I hadn't done the Find or Rescue of OOX-09HL so I went ahead and started farming.
I started with the Mangy Silvermanes since there were a lot of people that said they had good luck with them, plus on the statistics it said they were one of the highest drops. I spent about an hour farming and no luck.
Later, I came back and read about trying the wolves and trolls in Jintha-alor, and after about an hour of farming (and getting ganked once and spending about 10 minutes trying to find my way back off the east coast), the beacon finally dropped off a Vilebranch Soul Eater troll.
After going back to the chicken, the escort itself was easy - only had to kill 2 slimes and then the 3 owlbeasts that spawn on the road. Then the chicken takes off and the quest is complete =)

Like others, I spent hours farming this thing. I gained an entire level (53-54), filled my bags with Green items, cloth, wolf meat, vendor loot, vibrant feathers and large eggs. I also found an
epic world drop
, before I finally scored the beacon.
I farmed wolfs of all kinds, Owlbeasts, Slimes and Trolls. I cleared my way up Jintha Alor and back down again. It is quite possible I killed every living thing in the Hinterlands twice over. It finally dropped off a Vilebranch Soothsayer (Skull Rock region).
The beacon is definitely a
zone drop
, and your chances of getting it to drop are the same regardless of what you target. If you are determined to find it, and want to profit off of the time it will take you (be it 1 kill or 457) do not limit yourself to farming the wolves. The humanoids (Owlbeasts and Trolls) and the Oozes will at least add coin and items to your bags as you hack and slash away.
As a side note, all of the Homing Robot escort quests have been simplified. You only have to escort the robot chicken a short way, and encounter one ambush. The robot will then activate it's boosters and fly away.

Feel free to either rate up/down this post upon confirmation as I am speculating. I spent 8 hours in the hinterlands killing literally every mob in sight with no drop. Well over 2,000 mobs. Before attempting to farm the beacon, that particular toon had never set foot in the hinterlands. Not even for the FP. So finally i decided to test out a theory. I went and picked up all the quests from aerie peak and 3 kills later the beacon dropped. If you've never obtained a single quest for the hinterlands i would advise having them in your log while you farm the beacon. Even if i'm wrong you can instantly abandon them later, and when it comes to farming rare/uncommon drops it's better to be safe then sorry.

Not only does it not drop if you have completed it, but it is also Unique - so drop rates are screwed a bit.

Does anyone else believe they call this "Distress Beacon" because of how much distress it will cause you if you actually want it to drop?
Edit: As has been noted before, the troll ruins are good places to farm because of the proximity of subsequent pulls. If you would like to farm in a location that's safe to go AFK, the turtles on the east coast are quite nice (but beware
Gammerita
, the sole hostile turtle).

Okay, after about 20 minutes working on the mangy silvermanes, I went over to Jintha'alor as was recommended above. Got the drop in less than 5 minutes. I am now a proud owner of a Mechanical Chicken :)
Go to Jintha'alor. Very populated; better chance of a drop. Also, great way to farm for mageweave, or if you're an herbalist, purple lotus.

After an hr or so on both mangy silvermanes and Jintha'alor, I went back to kill some more wolves. After wiping them out, I decided to kill a random Vilebranch Scalper and see if I got some luck off them this time.
It dropped :D Seems like it can drop from any mobs in the area rather then just 1 kind :)

After obliterating everything in Hinterlands for three hours I finally did, indeed get this to drop off of my thirteenth Mangy Silvermane. I didn't want to believe, and sort of half-heartedly wanted to prove the claims wrong via my own horrible luck, but sure enough it dropped.
I started off farming the slimes by the river for about an hour because I wanted to be close to the chicken when the quest item dropped. (Yeah right). Decided to move on to Jintha'alor; completely cleared that place several times with no luck. Went and killed the turtles on the beach with no luck. Killed indescrimnate random stuff running around the zone. Went to check the robo-chicken to see if maybe I hadn't completed the quest when I was actually questing there five freakin' years ago, but I hadn't.
So, in desperation I came here and I read about people having luck with Mangy Silvermanes. So, I gave it a whirl, and it worked. I realize that it is really all still just anecdotal; it may not work for you, but it worked for me.

I know its all luck, but I cleared out Jintha i'd say 3+ times and no beacon. I go down to the turtles (small area with less mobs and more spread out) and only had to clear them out twice to get the drop, turtles do work as well!

Snores comment is great, and still works in patch 4.0.1 with only the following change:
It will work once per login. If you want to use it again - even if you complete one of the quests - you must logout and back in, and then repeat the command.
- Shad
To make this simple for everyone.
This is how you find out which quests you have not done.
/run local function f() t={};GetQuestsCompleted(t); l={485,836,351,648,2766,2767,3721};for i=1,7 do if not t]
then print(l) end end end;x=CreateFrame("FRAME");x:RegisterEvent("QUEST_QUERY_COMPLETE"); x:SetScript("OnEvent",f);QueryQuestsCompleted()
Copy & paste this into the WoW chat.
Now you will see a few quest IDs, there are the quests you have not completed yet.
This is how you can read the IDs:

I literally had to exterminate all of Jintha'Alor to get it to drop. Everyone from the bottom of the steps, their pets, their raiding wolves, all the way up through Princess Hexx. I ruined an *entire tribe of people* for this thing.
And the rest of the quest took 3 minutes. Their sacrifice was not in vain.

Is this still obtainable since 4.0.3? Tried for a couple hours with no luck and many of the NPCs with a higher drop rate on this list are nowhere to be found.
Edit: After taking a break I went back to try again and after about 15 minutes it finally dropped. Around 2 hours 15 minutes of grinding.

I've been grinding mobs in Hinterlands for over 5 hours. I've focused on trolls, slimes, alliance dwarves, moonkin, and wolves. I've killed at least 200 of each group. I've got stacks of small eggs and wolf meat. Lots of cloth. Quite a few greens. No beacon.
I only started grinding AFTER I had completed every other quest in the zone. I want to continue questing, but I don't want to leave the zone before finishing it. I'm starting to seriously consider the posibility that it is not in game. Even if it is, Blizzard needs to fix this drop rate NOW. It's not a rare pet or a mount. It's just a quest like thousands of others. To have to grind for hours to get it is inane.
Edit: ...
So after 6 hours of farming, it finally dropped. It dropped off of a troll, but that's irrelevant. It's a stuid-rare zone drop. If you're farming for it, take solace in the fact that it DOES still drop. It's just stupid hard to farm.

I've been farming for this for a good 5 hours now. I checked to see if I've already done it, I haven't. Checked my bank, checked my bags, checked the chicken to make sure I haven't already done the escort. 5 different BoE blues have dropped in the mean time. Still no Distress Beacon.
O.o I'm going to go insane!
Edit:
is the best to camp if you're Alliance. After 7 hours of farming anything that moved, I decided to settle down and just camp this guy, seeing as he has a 1½% drop chance, and he respawns after like 40 seconds! Got it on like, my 12th kill of this guy.
So if you've been farming for 7 hours straight like me, just kill Gan'dranda over and over and save yourself the frustration.

Got my chicken today. To summarize:
1. Yes it does drop after Shattering.
2. Yes it does a very low droprate even for a zone-drop item.
3. It doesnt matter what to farm, i farmed turtles just because they are turtles and must die.
4. Make sure to use macro mentioned before to determine what exact quests you are missing.
5. Make sure to redo Feralas escort because it has been changed after Shattering. Thankfully, those Yeti drops it pretty fast, not like Hinterlands population.
6. Dont give up, its completely random, zone drop is zone drop you cant do anything with that.
Wish you a good luck and happy hunting.

How cruel can Blizzard be...
After the "1-hit wonders" that were the other two beacons (litteraly, the first enemy I killed in those zones dropped the beacon...), this one put the W back in WORKING FOR IT!
I farmed for 2 hours, killed 300+ creatures, did a ton of quests to make it less boring, ganked a woefull horde lvl 33 warlock a few times (he was in the way of my lvl 85 pally, and I needed to vent some frustration...) and still the thing would not drop. I gave up, did one last quest (gathering suply crates from Skulk Rock), and it finally dropped from a sad little green slime...
The drop rate of this thing is insane! And the reward being a small ugly "mechanical" chicken? Not worth it...

I thought I'd be smart and farm this from the oozes for a chance at a Disgusting Oozeling, but it looks like their drop table is outdated since Cataclysm - none of the oozes in Hinterlands appear to drop the Oozing bag.
So farming JA is probably best for the cloth to AH. Not much incentive, but better than nothing. I got Lorekeeper and spent an additional 4 hours pure grinding as an 85 before getting my OOX beacon.

If you start at the bottom of Jintha'alor and work your way to the top, killing and checking everything, you should find it before you reach the top. I started getting a little annoyed trying to find this beacon. I spent about 45 minutes killing the Saltwater Snapjaws outside of Revantusk Village, to no avail. I decided (since I was going for Loremaster anyway) to just pick up some quests to make the grind seem less tedious. The beacon dropped for me while I was in Jinth'a'alor, thankfully. I suggest if you're finding it annoying to go up and down the coast mindlessly killing the turtles, try questing for a little bit. It really helped the grind seem less tedious, and I got some gold out of it from completing the quests/vendoring items.

Then I saw first comment on this page and thought a bit about it. I got Feralas beacon from one of the yetis that roam around chicken on multiple of my toons. Maybe droprate is higher from mobs that are closer to that cursed chicken. So I tried that strategy. Killed few wolves around Skull rock and moved onto Primitive Owlbeasts, and it dropped from 2nd Owlbeast. So if you lose all hope try this strategy. Maybe it's just luck but maybe there's something more.

Others have already left guides, but I'd like to point out you need to get all 3 different beacons and do all 3 escorts to get the pet. Each beacon works for the corresponding homing chicken-bot, which is in the same zone as where you found the beacon. The 2 letters after the / in the beacon's name denotes the location it's from. Some posts were misleading in only saying that you need to get the beacon once, you need to get all three once. :P

I don't know if this is "good luck" or an indication that the drop rate has been improved, but here's my most recent experience:
I landed at Revantusk Village with my paladin and started killing turtles. It dropped on my 12th kill, about 2 minutes after I started.
This might be useful - my paladin was (at the time) level 46, well above the level rate for the area. So maybe the drop rate is higher if you overpower the zone.

A handy addon to have for those seeking the distress beacons is EveryQuest it lets you know if you have completed a quest, where to pick up quests and where the best drop rate is for mobs.

For ranged classes that have instant spells with no CD:
- If you're trying to farm the Wildhammer Shaman, stand at
71.82, 50.38
and face West.
- Then create this macro:
/tar Wildhammer Shaman
/cast Ice Lance
(replace "Ice Lance" with whatever your spell name is)
Enjoy killing about 100 mobs / min :D!
P.S.: I've killed more than 300 of shamans and still no quest item :(
**EDIT**
After trying all the other mobs in Hinterlands: spiders, wolves, oozes, etc... I went back to the Wildhammer Shamans! And used the macro to kill a LOT of them, then looted and got it. Imo, it's the fastest way to farm it.
**EDIT 2**
When MoP's gonna come out, you'll be able to AoE loot xD! That would be pure pwnage!

When you run into mobs you should whack whatever is attacking the chicken. Dead chicken, quest fails.
You can't shield the chicken. I tried.
This was my first beacon, but the third for the shaman and sure enough he got the pet mechanical chicken.
We ran into two slimes, two stealthed wolves, three owlbeasts and three trolls, in that order. The wolves were one at a time. I think all were 47 or 48.

Here is how I did it. For the first time, let the chicken die when you meet the first three owlbeast, then kill 1 or 2, and leave to get the quest again. Now when you reach the same place, there won't be enough time for the beasts to respawn, so you pass without a fight. When reach the second group, dps everything you have to kill the first two but make sure you aggro everyone of them so that the chicken can stand more hit after you die later, then assuming you're like me, a lvl 47 priest, you would probably die at the third one, rush back from the gravelyard which is only seconds away, and kill the third one. Mission accomplished.
Good luck.

I farmed this item for two consecutive nights, 3 hours a night, to no avail. I was killing the various Owlbeasts, Wolves, and Oozes. Today I switched to the Saltwater Snapjaws along the coast, and after 40+ kills it finally dropped off a level 50 turtle right next to the Horde outpost. They drop Speckled Shell Fragments; each stack is worth 45s.

It took me 9 hours of pure grinding and no avail, however while farming ghost mushrooms one of the oozes dropped the beacon (sadly, just a few hours before I helped my warrior friend with it). I decided since I had to wait for the shrooms to respawn anyway that I would try to solo it.
Surprisingly, it was supremely easier than the Feralas and Tanaris ones. As a 48 feral druid, easily took down the oozes in the beginning and kept behind him until he alerted me of the incoming danger, where I switched to bear and ran up to aggro the 3 incoming boomkins. It was a very easy fight, I let my rage go up for the first one, while always keeping demoralizing roar and faerie fire up, then when he died I slapped down frenzied regeneration for the two. Got through the second easily and then switched to cat to finish off the last one.
Same strategy with the trolls really, since it's a long run the cooldown finishes. No problems at all. Just heal between fights!

This is a quest for Peacecraft and not warcraft (for preists). On the other two chicken quests, the chicken would fight the mobs, and I would get bogged down in the fights and before i could get all the aggro (using power word pain) on me the chicken would die (not me). In this one, the chicken keeps walking when the mobs attack since I succeed at getting all the aggro on me. Then I fear the mob (I'm a preist) and ran to catch up with the chicken. And the mob doesn't follow! This happened with all 3 mobs I encountered.
So I didn't get to kill anything and finished the quest! But I wanted to kill the Owlbeasts as they might have Eggs which are useful for the 225 cooking quest for my alts.
In the other chicken quests I have failed, even if I get all the aggro on me, the chicken joined in the fight too, creating problems and becoming chicken nuggets.

Just did this quest as a 50 Paladin, was very easy.
A nice pally trick to use (with any escort quest) is to judge SOL on all enemies who are attacking, occasionally switching targets to keep the seal active. This way your escortee is constantly healing and you don't really have to worry about failing.
I got mobbed at one point by 3 quest mobs and 2 wandering mobs. During the fight another walked too close and aggroed making it 6v2. With SOL active on all enemies, it was easy to tank and the chicken didn't get below 80%.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I finished all 3 of these chicken rescues and didn't receive anything special. I did however have to abandon one and re-do it because I died while fending off a mob and the chicken killed the last remaining mob memeber and wandered off into the distance. It was never found, never reset, and the GM's just told me to abandon it. So make sure you don't let that bugger wander off or live when you die!

You turn in the quests for all the chicken escorts to a gnome in Booty Bay, Oglethrope Obnoticus.

I got the beacon drop off of a OWl beast in the hinterlands

anyone got this one? Did the beacons in tanaris and feralas but never got the Hinterland version dropped. And I spent a lot of time farming trolls.

What is the end result? of the quest not the chance to get a drop poll.

Pretty much all the mobs here should be marked as Hinterlands. The ones that aren't, are mislabelled.

I just helped a guildie complete his last 2 of the three beacon escort quests. When he turned the last two in, he got an additional 7000XP and a "pet" escort chicken. So doing all three gives you a bonus. I still need the beacon drop from the Hinterlands to finish my three......so I'm off to do some hunting up there.

The quest dropped from a wolf in Hinterlands, right outside Agol'watha. I think you can only get this quest once, so if you delete the beacon you're out of luck.
Getting to the robo-chicken was the hard part (for my level 44 Hunter, making it past the Jade Oozes etc to the lake east of Agol'watha).
I had to search on the forums to find the beacon. Walked all over the place first. Beacon is on the big island rock in the lake.
Then, I followed the chicken. Key hint: ride your mount, hang back from the chicken, and then when it runs into trouble (e.g. 3 level 47 Owlbeasts walking down the road), just let it keep walking. It seems that if mobs don't hit *you*, the chicken won't stop walking.
I had to kill a level 48 and a level 47 green slime (sludge?), and a level 47 and level 48 Silvermane Stalker (wolf)... I didn't have to mess with the Owlbeasts or the trolls (or the level 50 Snapjaw turtles on the beach which were yellow-mooded so they didn't attack since I didn't bother them).
But all in all, not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be... and not as hard as it would have been (impossible) if I had battled every mob that took a swing at the chicken.
Good luck...

Okay, so I've been farming slimes in skulk rock for 3 hours now. Is this confirmed to drop?
Edit: Okay I kid you not, it literally dropped on the mob that I was shooting while typing the comment. Confirmed to drop.

Might be complete chance, but I was farming slimes for about an hour in total with no drop, and then I figured I'd switch it up so moved over to the Owlbeasts and got the drop within about 4 or 5 of them... Was the Primitive one to be specific

Droprate of roughly 1% seems right. I killed 72x
银鬃狼
and 45x
邪恶的枭兽
to get the drop from one of the Owlbeats.

Farmed for 4 hours , killing slimes/elites etc etc.. then i read in forum here to kill owlbeast.. 10-11 kills of them and it dropped :-)

Took me about 2 hours of farming the Witherbark Trolls (they die easiest I find, and I don't have skinning), after finishing all quests in the zone. Droprate sucks bad.

2 and a half hours and a full level it dropped.
Happened to drop the first kill after I left my group.

started Hinterlands with level 48, I am now 51 and all the quests are done. No beacon in sight. (SoM)
how come the beacon in tanaris and feralas have moderate droprates, and this one is rarer than a female dwarf?
评论来自
Karpata
Droprates are probably all roughly accurate and I got a bit unlucky. No miracle story here. Killed a large variety of mobs and including owl beasts and slimes. Took about 700+ mobs and it dropped from a troll.

OPUNTIA
just did all 3 at level 80. The Hinterlands one didn't match questie for drop off and the mobs never spawned even though the chicken said attack was imminent. Still marked complete.
killed everything in the zone with no drops until the silvermanes close to the alliance town tip. Then it dropped right away. Coincidence maybe.

Wanted to post an update relating to current Classic Era servers. For about an year (or more), NPCs have had bugged pathing when they go in/out of water.
Naturally, after grinding for at least 3-4 hours I found the beacon (got it from
Trolls
btw, I farmed Oozes for
hours
with no luck) and during that time had to go back to sell to vendor twice, and I got to almost 20% durability just from fighting the oozes (with no dying).
So, it turns out that the chicken does have to cross a small section of water, which due to the bug leads to the chicken walking down to bedrock and disappearing into the void. This will fail your quest, but what I found is that if I go inside the water and just dive in a bit (the spot where it crosses is very shallow), it won't actually fail the quest. I guess you are closing in on the distance enough to stay in range like that?
I ended up finishing the quest, but wanted to give this as a heads up, because there is no sign of Blizzard planning to fix this bug anymore and it may appear like the quest is 100% undoable, but it is still possible to do it.

To anyone grinding this in wrath, it can drop. The drop rate seems lower than during classic vanilla. I did all the quests in Hinterlands and grinded the trolls at Jintha'Alor for over 3 hours before it dropped. It finally dropped from a Vilebranch Blood Drinker.
Stay at it, it will drop eventually, good luck.

Was farming this by looting blood elves and wolfs around QUEL' DANIL LODGE (31,49), dropped after +- ~70 mobs (from one of the blood elf scouts, but that's irrelevant)
