I understand that Motes of Water can be fished up from the swirling pools along with special fish

According to thottbot Mote of Water has 140% chance of being fished from Elemental Plateu in Nagrand. I can't get there normally, so this might be a place restricted to lvl 70 with flying mount to ease the farming of Primal Water. Can anyone confirm if you have over 100% chance of fishing Mote of Water from it?

Highest drop rate is from the
Crashing Wave Spirits
on the elementals plateau in Nagrand. You need a flying mount to get there.
As per fishing, I suspect that they drop at the highest rate up on this plateau as well.

This may drop more on Elemental Plateau, but have you ever been up there? The elements are 70-71, dont drop the Motes of Water that much and if you die up there, theres no way to get your body, you gotta raise at grave yard! If that sounds fun to you, good luck with grinding. I however prefer getting them from the Lake Spirits around the throne. They're lvl 64-65, pish easy to kill (im a frost mage n still kill them with about 4 spells) and seem to have the same drop rate as the Crashing Spirits. Plus, if you mess up or go afk n die, you have easy access to your body!

Tried the fishing at Elemental Plateu. Fishing normally there doesn't give anything better, but there is a school there called Pure Water, which will let you fish 3 times and gives 1-2 Mote of Water each time. Average drop rate is 4,2 mote of water from each school, there are 6 spawns there with 1 hour respawn time.
This is the same place with the mobs that drop Mote of Water.

I'd have to say that the fastest place to grind these is from the Shimmerscale Eels. With a 70 lock I can swim around Sylmer Lake, and never have to stop while farming. Assuming there isn't competition, I can usually net about 4 primals per hour (which includes a drink with each lap of the lake.), with very little effort. Since the mobs are lvl 64, they drop fast, and there is much less competition than on the elemental plateau. If there is competition, it tends to be lower level folks, who can easily be shoo'ed or ganked.
This location does have the drawback of being water, so you'll benefit from a waterbreathing buff, or a swimming speed buff; but I can still farm fast without either of these. You also have to go to the banks to eat or drink, but that isn't too much of a problem. (you can drink under the right waterfall without being attacked.)
What's more, this is a quick ride away from Shattrath, and does not require a flying mount, and you can head back to town easily to empty out your bags.
(The drop tables for them were changed several weeks ago when they primarily dropped motes of mana, hence the low drop rate which I feel isn't accurate. It should be around 25%)

If you wanna farm Mote of water, then get your fishing skill to 330, and attach a +100 fishing lure make sure you got +2 fishing on your gloves (buy some grey cloth gloves) and you got a +20 fishing pole.
Then make your way to nagrand, start with the water at halaa, and move along the water from there upto the water elementals (flying mount/form is needed)

Another good spot for non fisherman farming is the lagoon in Zangarmarsh.
The 61-62 eels in that lake have a 16% drop rate. They also drop a lot of greens.
Close to the lake darkcrest sentrys floats around in the naga villages, they have around 30% drop rate. They call for help before dying so be sure to pull them away from naga mobs.
As a warrior i farm very slowly compared to other classes but i can manage at least one or two primals an hour.

I made a quick outline of where all the best places to farm motes are. Very useful if, like me, you are farming many of them for a recipe of some sort.
Layout:
(Zone) NPC name - Coordinates - % drop rate - link to page at Wohead
Mote of Air:
(Nagrand) Storming Wind-Ripper - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 33.9% -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=22310
Mote of Fire:
(Nagrand) Raging Fire-Soul - 69.21 (Throne of Elements) - 34.1 -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=22311
Mote of Water:
(Terokkar Forest) Crashing Wave-Spirit - 63.17 (North-Western Throne of Elements) - 33.7 -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=22309
Mote of Earth:
(Blade's Edge Mountains) Sundered Rumbler - (Basically above and all below Area 52) - 18.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=18881
Mote of Mana:
(Netherstorm) Mana Wraith - 36.60 and 31.73 (Anywhere above Area 52 and more below. While you're at it, kill the Nether Rays as well, they have just as good of a chance to drop and are mostly in the same area) - 25.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=18864
Mote of Life:
(Zangarmarsh) I didn't find any specific place to farm for these because the zone is just rich with them. But I would suggest farming the Bogg/ Starving Bogg Lords and Fungal /Starving Fungal Giants because they are all very close. - The Spawning Glen (SW Zangarmarsh) and East of there is the Quagg Ridge - Very similar drop rates on all 4 mobs that I pointed out, 18.2 to 18.8 -
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=22575#00Rmz
Mote of Shadow:
By far the most commonly found mote. This is dropped in almost every zone and can be easily farmed anywhere. But there may be a few exceptional areas just because npcs that drop them are close together, non-elite, and easy to kill. Here's one spot in a few that are exceptional:
(Nagrand) Voidspawn - Again, no specific coords, but all around Oshu'Gun, the bigass crystal SW Nagrand. - 18.4 -

Fishing in the Pure Water pools that spawn on the Elemental plateu has been as fast if not faster than any solo or group farming I've done for motes. This includes both 2 man farming the plateue which cause us to have to wait for spawns, and group farming the mobs in sketis.
Each pool yields 3-6 motes and you can grab 4-6 pools until you have to wait for them to respawn which I believe is around 30 minutes. Takes no more than 5-10 minutes to fish them depending on your skill level. I would recommend buffed fishing skill at around 450+
For any non-farm-friendly classes like me a holy priest this has been a great way to get primals. About 2 primals per trip to the plateu with no killing involved at all.

Motes of Water can be fished out of the "Pure Water" puddles you see in edge of the waters almost near the coasts in big lakes. You can loot about 1-2 from each cast, can catch up to 4-8 per "Pure Water" Puddle. They are all over in Nagrand - Zangamarsh - Terokkar Forest in the big lakes near the coasts. Most I've gotten from a "Pure Water" Puddle was 8 motes of water. I gotten 4 times 2x Mote of Water I guess i was very lucky on fishing them.

As a frost mage, hunting water elementals is quite a pain in the behind, so I went for the Eels above Shat.
Result: 5 Primal Water in 40 minutes.
Costs: 2 Nagrand Berries, ~1g of repair costs. Easily covered by the regular drops (9 stacks of greys, ~20g).
Pulling groups, AE them when they're together while swimming away backwards, then freezing them, Cone of Cold, and another AE to finish it off. I'm a regular frost mage who turned 70 a few days ago, but hasn't worked on gear yet. +470 damage, 8k mana.
Still, almost no downtime. When you can't find big groups, you can wand them one by one to let your mana regenerate, and before you know it, you're good to go.
Ate/drank 2 times in 40 minutes. Evocation covered the rest.

Great place to farm for a holy priest. If you have Holy Nova you can easily AOE these things down. Just SWP to pull, and gather up a many as you can, probably 4-5 before risking a reset.. 2-3 Holy Novas and let the dots finish them. The shadow priest and warlock grinding next to me couldn't even keep up... After an hour I had 53 motes, 10 stacks of the fragments and such, and 6 greens. Not a bad haul for a holy priest.

If you have an alt that you don't play as often, a strategy to use for farming these would be to level their fishing to 375 (tedious I know, but worth it), then log them in elemental plateau. There are 6 spawn locations for "pure water" which yield 4-10 motes each. They are about a 30-minute respawn. On lower-population realms you can usually log in every 30-45 minutes, fish 3-6 of these pure waters & then log off. Takes 8 minutes to fish all 6 if you have no competition.
I do this on my priest that I never play & usually fish up 2-3 primals per log-on. Also NOTE: that when you fish up one of these "pure water" pools, it often triggers an event to respawn another one. If you are on the far east or far west side of the map & fish 1 of the pure water pools, check the other side to see if another respawned before you decide to log out.

If you are an engineer, then it's possible to farm for these motes using the
Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
in Zangarmarsh. When running around Zangarmarsh, you'll come across glowing blue clouds hovering overground. With the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, you can suck the motes of water right out of them.
Usually you can get between 3-5 motes per cloud this way.
Engineers get the schematic for this device by completing the quest
"The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor!"
(
Horde
//
Alliance
) in Zangarmarsh.
You can use this extractor to acquire motes from other regions of the Outlands as well.

Since Zangar is quite a huge area it can be very hard to locate the clouds.
Though the clouds give up to 3-5 motes, so getting 3 clouds is most of the time 1 Primal.
On the long run it's probably very boring to run through the area for hours.

All of your comments are helpful, especially since water and air are the two hardest types for me to get. However, being a miner, I have a built in advantage for motes of fire and of earth. These drop regularly from all mining nodes in Outland, the fire from fel iron nodes and the earth from any nodes.

Another nice spot for Motes of Water that is frostmage-friendly:
Muck Spawn in Nagrand. Make laps around the base of Halaa, they'll respawn by the time you make a lap, and the drop rate is 1% better than the eels in Terokkar. If you don't like swimming, fight Muck Spawn instead - the water's shallow enough that you never have to dive. Saves in waterbreathing potions if you prefer to ignore breath. Kills slightly slower but I find it's less of a bother, I hate underwater fighting. Not immune to frost spells.
EDIT: Maybe the biggest reason I like these better is that they feel faster - I was able to clear the entire pool of Eels and had to wait for respawn. Downtime = bad, and makes the Eels not any better than the Muck Spawn if you have a lot of bonus damage like me.

For all the farmer for the mote and traders
Do not merge those motes,
if your bag space allow!
The are no way that can convert Primal Water back to motes of Water now
And there are 3 receipts that use motes of water, in which set the price of mote
more expensive than those primal
(since the primal had little value than mote for leveling)
So, don't merge them!
in my server, one primal sold at 10g,
while one mote sold at 70s
don't be a poor soul like me, who lost 6g on a single right click

I can confirm that you can fish the motes in the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand with a "real" fishing skill as low as 201, as I just did it. I used an Aquadynamic Fish attractor lure (+100 for 10 mins) and Nat Pagle's FC-5000 rod for another +20, bringing me up to 321 apparent skill. But I was having no trouble fishing these up, getting 1-2 motes with maybe 2/3 of my casts and assorted stuff with the rest.

Actually seems like you don't need higher fishing skill to try on those "pure water" pools in this patch 4.2.2, I tried with my 30 points fishing skill getting 1-2 motes per cast as you can see here
http://oi54.tinypic.com/330v1tu.jpg
so you can do a full rotation killing these

then fishing, killing, fishing, and on and on, you'll be surprised on how many
Motes of water
you can get at the end.

One interesting thing I just found out
Mote of Water is the only elemental Mote you cannot turn into Primal when you are mounted (and in air).
When you want to turn it in Primal it only show you "You are mounted" message. Other elemental Motes will turn into Primal with no problem even when flying in air.

So, if you are on a character at around the level when you enter Nagrand, and you are in a tight spot gold-wise, Primal water is a nice thing to farm. I bet you there is plenty of other stuff to farm at a lowish level, but I found this to be very easy. in nagrand, just under Halaa, there are A TON of s around Halaa basin in Nagrand. if you make a solid circuit around the lake, while killing all the elementals, by the time you reach where you started, they will have all spawned by then. also, if your lucky, the elementals will sometimes drop . one more thing is that you only have to be around level 64 to farm these, although, if you are level 85, you could farm much quicker, but then again, as level 85, these will not give as significant an amount of gold as some other stuff. in the auction house, primal water can go for at least 100g, but nowadays with everyone putting everything in the auction house for at least 200 gold higher than they are actually worth, it all depends. hope this was helpful!

水之微粒
(and therefore
源生之水
, which you get by combining 10
水之微粒
) can be harvested from killing water creatures, but I found the absolute quickest and best way to get them is from fishing in the "Pure Water" Pools (I found six so far at the small lake above the Throne of the Elements in Nagrand and two down at Skysong Lake near the Throne of Elements). These "Pure Water" Pools, like fish pools, can be tracked by using your "Find Fish" ability, and I noticed that they have more of a bluish tint then regular fish pools (hovering over them with your pointer will also label them as "Pure Water"). You can fish from them anywhere from 2-4 times, and from these eight pools I got 48
水之微粒
. Much faster than killing creatures!
As a side note you can kill the
凶猛的水浪之魂
s or
湖水之魂
s while waiting for the Pure Water Pools to respawn. These elementals will mostly drop
元素碎片
and
元素碎块
, but you will also get
水之微粒
occasionally.

Well I wanted to see for myself if Skettis Surgers were decent ways for farming Motes of Water.
My answer: YES!
Unfortunatly I have been levelling characters at random so I'm not 70 quite yet so a friend and I went on her account to try it out.
The Good News: There are loads of these and if you are by yourself you can't run out of them. We got like 2 in every 2-3 Surgers.
The Bad News: Some classes will have great difficulty farming these. A mage with Dampen Magic and Frost Ward can walk all over these things. (They have frost attacks for about 350 and their frostbolts hit a tad harder), a warrior/priest/rogue for instance might find farming them quite tough.
P.S You DO need a flying mount!
Ultimatly go see for yourself, enjoy the Primal Waters!

I found Skettis to be somewhat difficult to farm, even as a level 70 hunter with an exotic pet. OTOH, you can also kill Warp Stalkers and collect fel hides, so it's a bit of a twofer. I farmed more easily in Plateau of the Elements in Nagrand (yes, just above Throne of the Elements, 60,18) --need flying mount to get there) and there were no other mobs around, just the odd rock elemental or two, but nothing I couldn't avoid. Whichever location you choose, don't forget to take along the Elixir of Greater Water Breathing or two.

Out of mere curiosity, I kept a tally of these suckers over the past two days. Ok so it's a small sample, but a sample none-the less.
Nagrand, below Halaa, the Muck Spawns.
yesterday I set off with the goal to get 20 motes. Not exactly sure how long it took. It was early morning so there was little competition. 45 kills later I had my 20 motes.
Today, I set off with the goal to only get 10 motes. I went out hunting a few hours later, than the previous day, at the same spot. 57 kills later.......I had 11 motes.
MY LUCK seems to be better, with higher drop percentages in the earlier morning hours. I didn't keep tally, but the other day I was able to get 20 air motes in just over an hours time.

Although the droprate says 50% drop chance at the crashing wave-spirits, you can't expect that there will drop one mote every two mobs. The system is pretty random.. sometimes you can kill 25 mobs without getting one, and then suddenly, you get two motes on each mob afterwards.
I tried to write down some statestics for my grinding session for these motes tonight, and after one hour killing, my droprate was starting to get stabilized around the 50% drop chance.
Good luck, and have fun killing.. :) Oh, and after beeing at this place for 5 hours tonight, one thing really came clear to me after seeing all these locks farming here also..: Nerf locks :S

You can go from one end of the lake to the other, and then repeat. They literally take me 7 seconds to kill (3 frostbolts) where elementals take much longer and you have to refill mana more often.

Although this may not help, going at a much later time in the day.. i.e 12am-4am In Sunspring Lake or Skysong Lake it is much easier to do it then no one to take youre kills and after spending an hour in each lake I found the surgers in Sunspring dropped more than Skysong
P.S (Take some water breathing pots)

Despite, the drops seeming a bit !@#$, at about x2motes every 11kills its farmable and if you listen to some decent music and have time its well worth it

as an afliction warlock, i am farming them in the elemental plateau. there is a reasonably good drop rate (thottbot says about 40%) and that seems accurate.
the % is calculated though that dropping two motes of water on one mob is a 200% drop

If you feel as though there is too much competition in the area where you are farming, try the Skettis area. It's big, has lots of elementals, and the drop rate is good. 2-3 people can easily farm this without interfering with each other.

the droprate from Shimmerscale Eels has been whacked with a nerfbat. the droprate is about half of what it used to be like a week ago... kinda sad because they were so uber easy and fast to kill :<

Killed 30-40 of them, got 1 mote.

My first attempt at farming the lake near Shattrath gave these results for a one hour session:
142 eels killed
31 motes of water (21.8% drop rate)
6 essence of water
Greys worth about 4.5g
5 greens (1 is an eternium lockbox (don't know whats in it yet) and another is a shadow draenite)
Elemental crystals worth 17.135g

Found 3 primals in about 45mins killing elementals in the lake at skettis, dropping every other kill ish, 1-2 motes. much better than the eels were for me:)
if u aint got flying mount, find tht elite spider ( SE of auch in the bone wastes )and get as close to skettis as u can, die and res up top as mentioned in some other post i read somewhere.

skysong lake by elementals in nagrand giving me a ZERO drop rate, total waste of time going there.

Skettis is the best place to farm Motes of Water in my experience. Lots of people seem to know this, so I'm rarely the only person farming there. But even with a couple other people farming the lake, there's still enough Elementals and they respawn quickly enough to support 3 average farmers pretty easily.
If you're a fast farmer and you're competing with a couple other fast farmers, then you'll have to be pretty quick on your feet and anticipate the spawns. But generally speaking, even with a couple other people fighting for the mobs, you can still farm this lake pretty easily.
Tons of mobs, great respawn rate, decent drop rate. It's the only place I go to farm for Motes of Water.
In general, I get about 5+ Primals per hour. Roughly one every 10 minutes.

The mote drops feel like they are being nerfed and 'moved' between mobs by blizzard, I guess to fight gold farmers, and sites like Thottbot. This is incredibly irritating.
Drop rate on the Eels outside shat have been nerfed to the point where it's a waste of time.
Thanks blizz.
Day by day i realize world of grindcraft is not worth my money or time any longer.

The best place to farm
Mote of Water
is in nagrand.
I know the mobs maybe hard but i farmed nearly 100 motes in 2 hours.
Just look for the water elementals in the lakes west of

Just went a farming in the little lake that could, and for me (70 frost) it is nearly double what the Elemental Plateau puts out. 20 motes in 30 minutes. And you don't get hammered by the water elementals either.

Location:
The Lagoon, Zangarmarsh
The Good:
1) Never seen another farmer here.
2) No elementals.
3) One primal every 10 mins average.
The Bad:
1) Eels have more hitpoints than the one's in the lake in Shat.
2) Eels have a higher damage output due to a sort of short-ranged "shock" aura in addition to a normal attack.
3) Eels are spaced further apart with a nasty pathback, 2-3 pull is average.
4) Eels are level 61-62, if you use something like imp. drain soul, it will only work on the 62s as the 61s are gray and do not count as giving exp.
5) Deep lake, bad news for anyone who doesn't have a means of underwater breathing.
This is all based on my experience. I am a 43/18/0 warlock on the Durotan server. Hope this helps some.

Throne of Elements, in Nagrand. Very north-east, just below the mountains. Very nice droprate plus there are Pure Waters (if you have fishing you gain Mote of Water from it too) = around 62,18, mobs are level 70-71, if you want lower level you can go into the lake. The lake is around 58,28, the mobs are around 65-66

The lake in Terrokar seems to be the best area drop wise for me. Farmed there for about 2.5 hours and I have 14 primals. Respawn rate is really good and the eels are squishy as hell.

I agree..Throne of Elements is a great place since you can fish them. I havent tried the ones in Skettis yet. I rather fish them than kill elementals since the droprate is like 95% percent when u fish. You will at times fish out a crate or a scroll but you get mostly motes.

375 Fishing (including lures and pole bonus) is NOT enough to cast anywhere in Nagrand
425 Is enough to cast but you fail more than half the time. Not sure what the actual minimum is, probably 400.
450 starts to work more reliably.
Fishing in open water on the elemental plateau, skysong lake, or anywhere in nagrand does NOT produce motes. You have to cast your bobber so it lands in “Pure Water” pools to get the motes. Occasionally, you will get a mote of water out of a school of fish in Nagrand (And also in Zangermarsh) but this is rare.
“Pure Water” pools work just like schools of fish do. You get 1 or 2 motes of water per cast into the pure water and about 4 successful casts before it disappears. Some casts produce scroll cases or rare fish. I usually got 2 to 5 motes total out of each pure water. The pools respawn in about an hour.
There are 4 or 5 pure waters that spawn on elemental plateau which is north of the throne of elements and can only be reached by flying. Only pure waters will spawn on elemental plateau.
On skysong lake in Northern Nagrand, pools will randomly respawn as pure water, schools of mudfish, or schools of bluefish. Thus to keep a supply of pure water respawning, you have to fish out all the schools of mudfish and bluefish too. If you trained up cooking along with your fishing, the cooked versions of these fish provide good buffs and can be sold at the AH.

Just finished farming the lake in Terokkar. Nobody else was in my way luckily, and I was able to farm 4 primals in 30 mins. I absolutely LOVE potions of water breathing - makes life so much easier.

skettis area may have a decent drop rate (i found it no better than any other water ele) however the area is infested with allies (or horde if you are allied) so be on the lookout for some , oh say, warlock and his pet to start ganking you when you are around 50% hp fighting water eles as a frost mage LoL~!

I've been farming Motes of water for about 1 week now.
In skettis i've killed 1036
Skettis Surger
, 580 Surgers of these have dropped 1 or 2 motes.
(56% droprate)
Shadowmoon Valley -
Enraged Water Spirit
- Killed 187 mobs for try, 68 of these dropped 1 or 2 motes.
(36% droprate)
The water elementals in Nagrand I havent even tried, there is too many people farming there.
For the record, i've looted 16 greenies and 1 blue from the 1036 mobs in Skettis. woho!
The mobs got 5547 HP and is a very easy kill for a fire mage. Use Noggenfogger Elixirs and it's a cake to swim around and around without breathing :>
Edit: Killed some water elementals in Nargand Throne of the elementals, droprate was 36%.
Also tried out worms in the Lagoon in Zangarmarsh, worst ever... got 1 mote out of 14 mobs and quit :P

I can confirm that Skettis lake is good...
Go there in the morning and can pick up 7½ primals pr. hour. This is no joke. But being shadow I can pretty much grind without stopping thx to pet, torrent and mana regen trinket.
If not there, then the two little pools in nothern Shadowmoon Valley fits perfectly for 1 person.
If you're not hurrying to kill everything, but just take it easy the first mob will repsawn when you kill the last.
I reckon you could do almost as well as Skettis if you're alone there.. :)

It seems the previous seems to be holding up true for the Motes of water since patch 2.3 came out. Skettis seems to drop motes better than elemental plateu and there's less people who farm there.

As others have mentioned, you can farm these in the lake NE of Shattrath City from the Shimmerscale Eels. In one hour, I received 18 gold from selling trash drops, 3 green items, and 4 Primal Water with 1 Mote of Water left over. Also, having Elixir of Water Breathing cuts down the time to farm these greatly.

NE of Shat'trah there is a pond in Terrokar forest. This is a very good place to grind for the motes. I grinded them for a hour and achieved 5 Primal Waters and 1 mote of water. If you aren't 70 yet this is the place to be. I reckon I killed just under 100. Dead easy to kill and I bet had some allies not turned up I could have got a 6th Primal. So basically if like me your level 65 (give or take) then grind these, no allies are about you could average 1 mote a minute, thats 6 primals a hour. Good luck tigers :)

I just finished farming for these motes. In an hour and 45 mins. I got 12 primals. All of it coming from the elementals in skettis. Most dropped 2 motes at a time. Very easy to kill those guys as a hunter, and the best drop rate out of all places I've tried to farm. Just bring some of your remaining nagrand cherries or other breathing pots and swim round and round the lake. They spawn quickly. Make sure to avoid the elite surger that is there.
Side note: for everyone who says that the lake just NE of shatt is the best, it's not. Drop rate there sucks big time. You'll be lucky if you get 5 motes in an hour farming there.
