Welcome to Wowhead's Holy Paladin Healer PvE Class Overview guide for Cataclysm Classic! This guide will help you improve at your class and role, improving your knowledge to face the hardest Dungeons and Raids from Cataclysm Classic.
Throughout this guide, we will cover many different aspects to increase your Holy Paladin Healer expertise, including concepts like talents and talents builds, BiS gear choices, stat priorities, consumables, gems, enchants, among many other aspects of your class and specialization. Make sure to navigate to other pages of the guide to find more in-depth information, as each works as a knowledge hub for their subject.
Class Overview for Holy Paladin Healer
Holy Paladins have been the go-to tank healer in all previous expansions, mostly due to lack of any aoe heals... and now, it's finally changing! Cataclysm looked directly to de-emphasize healer niches and upset the status quo, and the biggest affected spec by far is Holy Paladin. While on the surface it's easy to be negative about no longer being the absolute tank healing top dog, it's traded off by Holy Paladin finally gaining AoE healing (and very potent AoE healing at that), as well as a couple of very powerful instant heals.
It still maintains its spot as the master of healing cooldowns, though overall the cooldowns are comparatively weaker as damage isn't as spiky as in WotLK. However, overall, Holy Paladin in Cataclysm is a rewarding, more skillful healer that tests your positional awareness and has you juggle many cooldowns to figure out which is appropriate in any given situation.
How Holy Paladin Healer Changes in Cataclysm Classic
Cataclysm Healing sees a major change to the healing meta; most healers follow a cookie-cutter formula of having an expensive+slow+very big heal, an expensive+fast medium heal, and a cheap+slow small heal. For Holy Paladin, the big heal is now

becomes a slow, cheap heal, and
圣光闪现
is a fast, expensive heal. You also now have
圣光普照
, an AoE heal, and
神圣震击
also forms a cornerstone of your spellcasts as they generate the new resource, Holy Power.
Holy Power is class-defining and for Holy Paladin, offers two uses:

, an instant single-target heal, and
黎明圣光
, an instant frontal AoE heal. Unfortunately on the Cataclysm Classic patch,

is significantly weaker than on launch, so Holy Paladin really is, somewhat interestingly, now a master of stacked AoE healing.
圣光道标
continues to be a core mechanic, though it's much less emphasized than in WOTLK. While you'll still want to put it on the tank, you will occasionally find yourself directly healing Beacon as it now only transfers 50% of healing for most spells, and does not benefit from your Mastery. This quandary of occasionally having to heal the tank directly, and choosing when to do so, helps define Holy Paladin playstyle in Cataclysm.
Stat and Attribute Changes
Intellect - Intellect now directly provides spellpower, and spellpower can't be gemmed, meaning that we CONTINUE to gem Intellect as it also continues to provide mana and crit. However, Intellect is now a red gem.
Spirit - All healers in Cataclysm now use Spirit instead of MP5, even Paladins and Shaman. Getting a lot of Spirit is important for Holy Paladin as it's a very mana hungry spec, especially if casting

Haste - Haste continues to be a great throughput stat, but now that Holy Paladins no longer have infinite mana with Divine Plea, it's much less important until you start getting high levels of mana stats.
Mastery - Hey, remember Val'anyr? Now you get the effect on ALL of your heals, all the time, permanently! One big side effect is that the shield does not apply to

healing, meaning that the 50% Beacon healing transfer is in actuality even lower due to no Mastery shield. Luckily in 4.2, Mastery shields were made able to fully stack and refresh themselves, so we have an ultra powerful version.
Critical Strike - Crit continues to be a lackluster stat, specifically due to how much stat rating 1% critical strike costs on gear.
Changes to existing Abilities & Talents
圣光闪现
is now a fast, medium-heal that costs a lot of mana. When directly cast on your Beacon, it grants you a Holy Power.
圣光术
is now a slow, low-heal that costs little mana, and uniquely transfers to Beacon at 100% rate. Despite this, you don't really want to spam it as it's not very good.
神圣震击
is now a staple of your healing kit that you need to cast off cooldown. Your Holy Power spenders are free, making Holy Shock extremely mana efficient on top of being a free, much stronger heal.
Say a prayer for
圣光道标
- it's now only a 50% transfer for most heals, and doesn't interact with our Mastery shields, which is a real double whammy. A minor bonus though is that it costs very little mana (or even 0 with the glyph), so swapping around Beacons as necessary is a great way to preserve mana. Lastly, it also goes to a whopping FIVE minute duration, so you won't really ever have to worry about losing GCDs to reapplying it to the same person.

has also been whacked - it's now only a 12% mana return (18% glyphed), though over only 9s, and with a 2 minute cooldown.

is now a powerful burst healing cooldown, with Divine Illumination being removed entirely. This is basically an even better version of the 2pc T10 Divine Illumination buff.
纯洁审判
is now only 9%, but also significantly increases our spirit scaling. This essentially means our haste scaling is much weaker than in WotLK, but we have amazing mana regen scaling later into Cataclysm.
神圣守卫
is now a Prot-only raid cooldown. Don't worry though - there's a new big healing throughput one for Holy.
圣佑术
is now an insanely low 30 second cooldown, no longer triggers Forbearance, and even gives you a crazy 60% movespeed boost with a talent.
Seal of Light and Seal of Wisdom are merged into a singular

, which has the effects of both. However, the mana return from meleeing is reduced significantly as it now ONLY scales with base mana.

is now a baseline Paladin ability, meaning that in times of low damage you can use Crusader Strike to additionally generate Holy Power.
Holy Paladin is one of the most reworked specs in Cataclysm, with a huge revamp to its existing spells and talents. Its entire playstyle got turned upside down! So don't worry too much about the individual nerfs in this list, as it all comes together to form a reasonably balanced whole later on.
New Abilities & Talents
神圣之光
is our new big, expensive, slow heal. When directly cast on your Beacon, it grants you a Holy Power.
We finally have a long-awaited AoE heal in
圣光普照
! This is a short-range AoE burst heal that you place on a target, and then it continues to heal over time in the area for a short duration. It also grants a Holy Power charge regardless of who you cast it on.
荣耀圣令
is one of your two new Holy Power spenders, and consumes all of your Holy Power for a big single target heal. It can be cast with only 1 or 2 Holy Power as well if necessary.
黎明圣光
is your other Holy Power spender, and consumes all of your Holy Power for a big frontal AoE heal. It can also be cast with only 1 or 2 Holy Power.
Cata Holy Pal sees several new spells to expand its AoE healing capabilities. Despite the new spells, it still suffers greatly when having to aoe heal very spread out people, and can really only effectively heal people that are stacked within roughly 10 yards from each other. However, the other aspect of its increased healing tools, the Holy Power spenders, makes Holy Paladin far more capable of movement, which is a great boon especially for the new fight designs in Cataclysm.
Class Viability for Holy Paladin Healer
Cataclysm Holy Paladin went through quite a bevy of changes throughout the expansion, and its 4.3 variant which we get to play is unrecognizable from the original 4.0 version. Its tank healing is middling after many nerfs, and the spread aoe damage profiles of T11 really do not favor its preferred aoe healing style. However, going forward into the expansion, stacked aoe healing becomes more and more powerful to the point where Holy Paladin is once again the king - but instead of for tank healing, it's for AoE healing! It's a strange role reversal. Either way, we may be slow starters, but it will ramp up.
Even more than in WotLK, Holy Paladin gear is completely uncontested due to being plate-only. That means due to gear alone, it can be a useful slot in 25m raids, though it may not necessarily be the best 10m healer until later in the expansion. It also won't be able to flex DPS easily, as Ret still requires a full separate set of Strength plate armor and a 2-hander, both of which are heavily contested by the powerful Unholy DK and Warrior DPS slots in a raid. This means that Holy Paladins may not be amazing early in the expansion, but will skyrocket in strength later - possibly as soon as in T12.
Class Mechanics for Holy Paladin Healer
Holy Paladins continue to operate off the same mana system that all healers have in all expansions. However, it now gets to play with Holy Power, which essentially gives it some extra mana flexibility; both

and
黎明圣光
cost 0 mana so every Holy Power generated is a lot of "free healing." Especially when you consider that
圣光普照
and
神圣震击
are both great, efficient heals in their own right, it makes Holy Paladin scale extremely well with mana.
Holy Power is a 3-charge cap system where you only ever generate one charge at a time. Charges are primarily gained through casting
神圣震击
or
圣光普照
. You can also gain it by casting
圣光闪现
or
神圣之光
directly on your Beacon with the Tower of Radiance talent. Lastly, while it does cost a little mana, you can gain a charge by
hitting
with Crusader Strike. It's worth noting we have no expertise on our gear, and getting a Crusader Strike dodged or parried by a boss will NOT grant a Holy Power.
Both
荣耀圣令
and
黎明圣光
, our Holy Power spenders, can be used with 1, 2, or 3 Holy Power, and spend all available Holy Power instantly. They scale perfectly linearly with each Holy Power spent, so that a 1 Holy Power WoG will heal for exactly a third of a 3 Holy Power WoG.
黎明圣光
has a specific targeting area that's not exactly a cone, despite its animation. The healing area is instead a rectangle where you're directly center on a short edge, roughly extending 5 yards to the left and right of your character and ~27 yards forward. It is a "smart heal" and prefers to pick damaged people, including yourself; however, it does the same averaged healing to all targets, it doesn't heal any specific person more than another.

now only has 50% of healing transferred to it. Transferred healing does not benefit from our Mastery; however,
黎明圣光
does transfer to Beacon. Unfortunately,
圣光普照
does not interact with Beacon at all.
Lastly, we now have a new bevy of healing cooldowns to play with! Avenging Wrath continues to be the same, talented at 2 minutes. Divine Favor is essentially a juiced-up version of the 2pc T10 bonus, offering additional crit on top of the haste (though it no longer halves mana cost of your spells for the duration). Aura Mastery works pretty much the same as in WotLK as a very powerful resistance aura amp, when applicable, and a very weak phys DR cooldown if not. Lastly, Guardian of Ancient Kings is a brand new, very long cooldown that doubles your next 5 single-target heals and gives them a small, short-range 10% AoE effect. These cooldowns don't really interact that well with each other (in particular, GoAK overheals like crazy), but being able to dole them out throughout a fight is what makes Holy Paladin capable of chugging along effortlessly.
Strengths & Weaknesses for Holy Paladin Healer
Due to the increased health pools relative to healing output of Cataclysm characters, Holy Paladin finds itself in a somewhat weird spot early on as it really struggles to efficiently deal the same amount of healing that other classes do. However, as later fights put on more and more stacked raid damage, Holy Paladin starts shining with the power of
圣光普照
(seriously, this one spell ends up carrying the spec).

We get a new Horde Paladin race, but overall the most powerful pick is still Blood Elf. For Alliance, the picks don't matter much as most racials don't really interact with Holy Paladin, but Human is best.

becomes self-only. This means it's pretty much useless for us, as we're well over hit cap on our Judgements.

Blood Elf continues to be the best Horde race for Paladins, pretty much exclusively due to

Tauren are the new Paladin race in Cataclysm, but have no throughput-increasing PvE racials.

can offer a PvP Holy Pal a useful stun, but it DRs with Hammer of Justice.
Best Professions for Holy Paladin Healers
In Cataclysm, most of the professions are perfectly viable and not particularly different from each other in terms of gains. The largest benefits come in early T11, when everyone is still gearing up; however, by later tiers, it becomes negligible.
Most professions, aside from Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning, offer roughly the equivalent of +80 Intellect through various profession-specific enchants/passives.
Engineering

is the largest possible power increase you can acquire from a profession. Engineering offers a powerful helmet

starting from Phase 1, which lasts well into the first tier of raiding. It also grants you access to explosives that you can use to squeeze in an extra bit of damage, though it's worth noting that explosives share a cooldown with Leatherworking's

The main benefit of Engineering, however, is

, just like in WotLK. Despite having a small fail chance compared to WotLK, they still offer you a get out of jail free card when you would otherwise die. Everyone makes mistakes, and this one just straight up has the potential to erase a positioning mistake instantly.
Lastly, the standard profession power increase for Engineering is, instead of being tied to a passive +80 stat increase, tied to a 1 minute cooldown instead

. This is great for healers as being able to control when you need extra healing is perfect for waxing and waning fight damage patterns.
Leatherworking

is a powerful healer support profession as it lets you use

While minor, the 15% movespeed added by these drums compounds quickly with your raid size and essentially means that much more uptime for your entire raid.
Alchemy
The main benefit of

comes early in the expansion, where we can craft a

. This is a great pre-raid and mid-raid trinket option that offers a good mix of throughput and mana sustain and is very easy to acquire. After T11, it's just another +80 int profession.
Tailoring

's profession benefit is slightly unique -

. However, its RNG nature is a bit hit or miss for us as healers. That being said, it is great for Retribution, so if you are mostly playing DPS, this is totally fine. It's worth noting there is a Spirit version with

, but as we've discussed in the stats section, Intellect is superior to any secondary stats in Cataclysm.
Blacksmithing
Initially,
锻造
offers the same +80 Int that most professions offer. However in T13 with epic gems, it gets a little better at +100 Int. If you're not already locked in to Leatherworking for raid support, or Tailoring for flex DPS, then Blacksmithing works great.
