Northern Exposure was a popular TV series in the 90's.

Rare mobs commonly have respawn times of several hours and they do not stay alive very long. I suggest checking the known spawn spots at off hours. This achievement will be easy since it only requires one rare. Follow-up for this on the other hand will be quite challenging.

I've found the High Thane wandering about in the Fleshwerks (Icecrown Glacier) to be the easiest to kill. I've run across him nearly every time I've passed by the area, and he's easily soloed. Failing that, grab a few friends and try to track down Putridis the Ancient, as he wanders between the Bombardment and Icecrown Citadel itself.

There is a full proof way for targeting all of these mobs. The end result of this will be three macros, but you will only ever have to push (or hit the keybind for) the third macro. It will reference the first two in one click.Make three macros to start with.

(It isn't a bad idea to add a /target Time-Lost Proto-Drake line to the second macro since you have extra room, that will target the rare mob in storm peaks that drops a mount of the same name.)

The Third Macro (edited so you can right click, left click, or hit the bind for the third macro for it to work - also note that you need semicolons after the first MultiBar line, not commas.):

/click MultiBarLeftButton3; MultiBarLeftButton4
/click MultiBarLeftButton3, MultiBarLeftButton4

(Third macro will be different depending where you place the first two on your bars)

Instructions: After making these three macros you need to place the first two on your bars (preferably next to each other and on the same bar for simplicities sake). Then you need to figure out what bar they are on (the third macro still works if you use a bar mod, but generally you want to keep it on Bars 1-6 of your bar mod).

To find out which bar your macros are on I suggest do the following (If you are using a bar mod it is a good idea to turn on your old Blizzard Action bars to figure out which of your Bars correlates with the Blizzard bars).

MainActionBar - Your Main Action Bar, it is the first bar you ever see when you start WoW.
MultiBarBottomLeft - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Bottom Left Bar option.
MultiBarBottomRight - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Bottom Right Bar option.
MultiBarLeft - On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Right Bar 2 option.
MultiBarRight- On the ActionBars panel in your Interface Options this is the equivalent of your Right Bar option.

Buttons: MainActionBarButton1 would be the first button (starting on the Left) of your Main Action Bar, MainActionBarButton12 Would be the last button on your Main Action Bar (for your Right Bar/Right Bar 1 its from Top to Bottom). So in my Third macro example

Once you have your third macro properly adjusted it should now work. Clicking or hitting the keybind for that macro will attempt to target all 23 mobs in both macros combined (in one click). You can use this for Bloody Rare to make the macro more accurate.

The drops of any rare-spawn (elite) mobs in Northrend -along with a blue item like rare-mobs should drop when killed.

Inside the package you get gold (15-25g), and perhaps a Crystallized item of some sort (the Northrend versions of Motes)

And just by the way.. this map of Northrend contains pins for all rare-spawns in the whole expansion. Use it, and use it wise... ;)

A highly useful little tidbit you can use to find the name of the button your mouse is over is:
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage( GetMouseFocus():GetName() );

You can just paste this into the default chat box and hit enter with the mouse over the button, or make it into a (new) macro and bind that, if you want.

I went through and for each name put it into WoWhead's autocomplete search box, stopping when the mob was the only name. In some cases this produced a search name that was obviously too long or was competing against non-Northrend mobs so I shortened those as best as I could. This ends up at excactly 255 with I hope no false positives.

Those looking to complete the big achievement for killing them all, I have a tip for you. I just partied up with a group of people and two of them were AFK when we had to kill a rare. They were in a completely separate zone, far away. After we killed the rare, both of them got the achievement.

You might want to tell all guild members to invite others if they find a rare. You don't even have to be close to the rare.

I wish I had known this a week ago when a guildie found King Krush but had to kill it before I got there. I didn't party with him. :(

InThe Storm Peaks there is also the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, which is in my opinion the most important of all the rares in Northrend, as it drops a most badass mount every time you kill it.

It may not count to the achievement but should be added anyways to any macro you're spamming at least when in The Storm Peaks.

Today I killed the Crazed Indu'le Survivor in a group with my friend. My friend got the killing blow and only he got credit for the achievement. I don't know if this is working as intended or a bug, but be aware that this may happen.

I was level 73 and he was level 80. There may be a bug where if there is a large level difference the lower level character does not get credit.

Just a PSA... Loque'nahak is ~~the only Spirit Beast in-game~~ the only Spirit Beast with his model and unique sounds, King Krush is the only devilsaur with the green skin, and Aotona is the only tameable parrot; all are highly sought-after by hunters, Loque'nahak especially. Mercifully, the other tameable rares, the newer Spirit Beasts (Gondria, Skoll, and Arcturis) aren't on the Frostbitten list, but they'll still be killed by people who think of them as loot piñatas.

If you see a hunter taming any of them, be considerate and let them tame. You will not get the achievement for killing it (it will be tagged to them), they will, since they've tagged it, and trust me, it's a long and stressful hunt for any of them. So don't be a jerk and ruin other people's day. If you see them and there are no hunters in the immediate vicinity, go ahead and get your achievement. :]

It really breaks my heart when I hear about a hunter who, after long weeks of searching and finally locating their beast, has it pointlessly killed in front of them. So please be considerate.

Marabon's macro worked great. I wanted the same thing for northrend since the above posted macro didnt allow me to look away and do other things as easy. This macro got a hit in like <20mins(lucky as I've used others for a few hours before) while in Dragonblight where I tracked down Scarlet Highlord Daion. This suprised me as I'm on a high pop server, but sweet at the same time. Seems like her location is a relatively safe bet as it is out of the way.

If you don't want to wear your fingers out, you can use the addon "_NPCScan" at <http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info12995-_NPCScan.html> to find all of the rares without spamming any keys or clicks. Just leisurely fly around the zones and let the addon tell you when it finds something.

It works for all locales, and has the same range as your average targeting macro.

Below is a macro per zone. I’ve made this at work so I used word to count the characters (including spaces) so if one is too long, try to shorten the name of the target to try to get it to fit. This is a combination of all the macros\comments that have been made so far so give credit to them, I just put it together.

if you dont have a fast flying mount for example, it's a good idea to create a macro from one of the lists on this page and spam it when flying from fp to fp. they take the longest possible route to destination usually and circle around places so there's a good chance you'll fly over a rare from time to time. upon landing, just fly or run back there with your mount this time.

NPCscan has helped me find 7 rares in 36 hours. Don't bother spamming macros, let this addon do it all for you. Just remember that if you want to find the rare again, the cache needs to be deleted.

Really nothing more to say than Spinkert. Passively letting npcscan pick these up, I've gotten 5, not even trying. Just tonight, I and my guild were headed to do Sarth +3 drakes and npcscan went off to tell me Tukemuth was nearby. Got 4 people their Northern Exposure achievement.

Also, Putridus is one of those big rare-elites that show up in the game from other zones even. So just sitting in Dalaran, NPCscan will eventually pick up on Putridus. Click the box to target him and rush out for your kill (before someone else with NPCscan snipes it).

Or just park your character with this one in a regular path of a rare and alt-tab going about other things (making sure sound in background is on). Check your window every 20 minutes or so to un-AFK and eventually you'll hear the distinctive horns alerting you the rare has appeared. A good idea if you want to know where the biggest chance for rarespawns are, just type /who dragonblight, /who borean tundra, /who howling fjord etc. Then you can see which zone is least populated and where the biggest chance for rarespawns are.

There's a great addon for doing this. It's called NPCScan - It comes up with a message with a spinning picture of the rare enemy it found. Clicking the little bar it creates will target the enemy. After a few days, it already helped me getting a kill.

No, fly around within target range and continuously spam the macro. Alternately, you could set this up before heading into the region and tap the macro periodically.

It can also be combined with the sister achievements for outlands Medium Rare.

With patience you can complete all four achievements at once.

Medium Rare --> Bloody Rare
Northern Exposure --> Frostbitten

If you were so inclined, you could also extend this macro to target creatures for To All The Squirrels Who Shared My Life, To All The Squirrels I've Loved Before, and Pest Control

Got this achievement today using Aydinn's macro in Dragonblight. Did one circuit of the areas patrolled by the three NPCs this morning with no luck. Tried again this afternoon and at the end of my second circuit of the day I got Highlord. Thank you Aydinn!

Here's one how I got it on my alt. I had parked my main on tlpd duty at the northern spawn just north of Terrace of the Makers. My alt was flying around Zuldrak on the look for other rares, My npcscan alerts of a rare, I find vyragosa, at this point my alt is just NW of Light's breach, looking for zuldrak sentinel. I proceed with killing Vyragosa, roll for the hat she drops, switch to my alt, just to see I got credit for killing it. Unfortunate I forgot to take a screen of it happening, so no proof on that one.

If you're trying for Northern Exposure / Frostbitten I suggest trying Stocking Up at the same time, because killing Northrend rares gives a guaranteed Abandoned Adventurer's Satchel, which give 20 Frostweave Cloth. :)

In original wotlk, I would randomly run across a rare mob or two pretty much every week. That was playing on Malygos (med/low pop) as well as Illidan (high pop). In wotlk Classic, to this day (8 months after release) I have only seen one rare mob (Loque'nahak). I am playing on Pagle US.

In my opinion, with the monstrous size of servers now, they really need to up the spawn time on these things or add more layers. Running across a rare has always been a fun thing in wow. Deciding if you want to kill it alone, get help or find a hunter to tame it was always a small highlight of my time spent levelling, doing dailies, farming or heading out to a dungeon. It's a shame they haven't been able to capture this in Classic wow very well.
