Thassarian did not spawn after I killed Galen. I went back to the church and killed Galen again and he spawned correctly. No logging out required.

tried all the diff. fixes listed here. the 1 that worked for me was the log out/in worked for me.

You would think, for as many years as Blizzard has been doing this game, they'd be able to get a quest out that didn't have bugs prior to release. I have to think they know what they're doing by now. Yet, here it is, Legion patch 7.1.5 January 24, 2017 and this quest is bugged. The quest turn in character Thassarian, didn't appear when I walked down into the Crypt until I read comments here and logged out and back in. As soon as I logged back in he was standing right behind me. I know it takes a lot to program a quest, but after all these years, you'd think they'd have it down.

Ok, Galen Trollbane run away and all guards in the city have become harm for you. Go out of the castle and find Galen in the church at 21.8 59.9 spot. Kill him and loot Trol'Kalar. Now, get out of the church and turn left, you'll see a crypt straight of out. Get in, there Thassarian awaits. You you cant see him, try to relog or decline the quest and pick it up again.

Having trouble finding the hand in after killing him and can't be bothered to watch the video?
You can find the quest hand in by turning left immediately after you come out of the church where you killed Galen Trollbane, turn immediately left again down an old abandoned garden archway and down some stairs at the end into a crypt. You will find Thassarian half way down the stairs, hand in the quest and continue.
If you're like me, and weren't paying attention properly, you searched around the abandoned barn in the main keep where the hand in appears to be on the mini map, killed him again because you thought the quest was bugged and repeated the process twice more.
I recommend just killing Galen once.. it's much quicker and less frustrating.

Thassarian didn't spawn when I went to hand this quest in. He spawned in the staircase of the Crypt after I relogged. Once inside, walk close to the alter and an action button on your screen will appear.

Make sure you walk to the crypt, don't fly otherwise Thassarian won't be there. At least that was my experience as I had to go back kill Galen again when I flew in to the crypt and Thassarian was not there and the gate was locked.

Step By Step for the New / Returning Player in 2020....

CLUSTER OF QUESTS AT THIS AREA FOR THE DEATH KNIGHTS' CLASS HALL:
The Ruined Kingdom
Regicide
The King Rises

NOTE:
* I did this on my Horde DK
* You're gonna want flying in the previous expansion, WoD, to GET THERE, but no worries like previously about needing gliders and such-- no falls to worry with. If you cannot fly from WoD, you'll have to find an alternate means to reach the place, but start in Undercity. You've got a nice lil flight ahead of ya!

THE RUINED KINGDOM
1) Go to the Undercity; go outside and mount up, spread your wings if you have 'em!
2) Head to Stromgarde: /way Arathi Highlands 19.4 65.7 Stromgarde
3) You'll arrive at a old grey keep. Go inside and head up the stairs and then up and around a ramp-- for returning players, you did a quest here when you first started your DK; it should look familiar. He'll acknowledge you, will grant ya access if you do a kill-and-collect quest for him.
* There's two quests available; everything is in the same area anyway.
* So there's no surprises-- there's several 110 (Elite/Gold Circle) roaming in the old village, so multiple mobs, but they're easy to kill
4) Head back to the SAME LOCATION (Blizzard likes to mix it up, but not in the case thankfully) and turn it in.

REGICIDE
5) He'll betray you, of course, and sic the guards on you. An easy fight outside. Fight your way around (fly if able) and go into the church and kill him.
6) Go outside, to the left, and down into the Crypt to turn in the quest.
* Others noted this is seriously bugged! If you don't see him to turn it in, try some of the other stuff people do such as logging out there and back in at the Crypt.

THE KING RISES
7) Walk down and watch as they raise the old king and there's some brief conversation. The old king opens his own Death Gate and heads back to Ebon Hold.
8) Use your own Death Gate and return to turn in the quest to Highlord Darion Mograine.
* This involves no fighting, but it's seriously buggy. You'll probably curse a lot here-- I know I did. Down in the crypt, they'll open a Death Gate. Standing around, nothing happens, no dead guy-- still buggy! Both NPCs followed me downstairs initially, one opened a Death Gate. Nothing initially happened when I did it the first time. Long story short, I had to make the flight to Arathi Highlands yet AGAIN. If you get in this jam, log completely out and then log back in.

As of Shadowlands 9.0, if you take this quest before you can fly at level 30, Prince Galen (with his sword Trol'Kalar)'s location is still reachable by foot. :D

Fight to the gate at 17,62.
Go west, then turn right.
Fight to the bridge at 18,59.
Fight towards the east, into the sanctum.
?
Profit!

Not sure if it's intended or not, but I noticed today that all the Stromgarde soldiers instantly become friendly to you the moment you set foot on the stairs of the chapel. Step off the stairs, hostile again. Step back on, friendly. At least it gives you a few less mobs to cut through to get to Galen.

Get used to running back from outside the castle.

This quest is seriously screwed up, or at least, it is when I'm trying to do it. There is a series of ELITES here - one right after the other - that ensures you can't just do this quest.

You die. And die. And die.

Won't say it isn't annoying, because it is. But I am FINISHING this chain because I've already spent over an hour on it, so argh.

... aaaargh.

EDIT: something definitely glitched. I shouldn't be getting elites here. I've run this with a couple of death-knights here, and here's the truth: sometimes, it's fine. Sometimes, it's not, and random elites are here to ensure you make 5 yards at a time. You just have to push through it.

Argh.

So I ran towards the bad guy and suddenly the whole place phased. It's now an Alliance fort and the prince is nowhere to be found. What do I do now?

FYI for anyone returning to this during Lemix:

If you accidentally take a death gate or portal back to the Infinite Bazaar, you can take the Karazhan Portal in Dalaran and fly back to the quest.

You'll get a warning that you're leaving the timeline, but nothing will happen.

As a note, I think the timeline warning about being sent back to Dalaran is bugged, so this may not be an option once they fix it.

Description

Galen Trollbane is a fool if he thinks that he can betray the Ebon Blade.

I have had enough of his games. The fallen prince wastes our time playing the king of a ruined throne, while heroes sacrifice their lives to save this world.

If Galen Trollbane will not open the tomb of his father, then we must take the sword and do it ourselves.

If he chooses to resist, so be it.
