Overview The encounter against the Lich King, appropriately for its level, requires above average raid performance. Personal mistakes, even more so than in the other Icecrown bosses, can quickly become raid mistakes and, soon after that, wipes. The fight may seem overwhelmingly complicated, but as soon as you are comfortable and familiar with what spells are cast when, it should become much easier. You will want your standard raid composition - 2 tanks & 3 healers on 10-man or 3 tanks & 6 healers on 25-man. The Lich King should be positioned somewhere close to the end of the platform opposite of the Frozen Throne, e.g. on the teleporter. All casters should be stacked about 10-15 yards away from him, and the OTs - about the same distance away from the Lich King. Ideally you want your OT(s), your casters, and your MT & melee DPS to form an equilateral triangle with a side of about 15 yards. Shambling Horrors should be faced away from both the melee's and the casters' group. During the first phase, the focus of the fight will be on adds. Sets of 3 Drudge Ghouls will spawn every 20 or seconds or so, and a Shambling Horror will appear approximately every minute (or a little more). The Shambling Horror, an undead vrykul mob, has a Shockwave, which is why you want him facing only its own OT. The ghouls are mostly harmless, even plate DPS classes can "tank" them. The OT should still try to gather a number of them - 5-6 seems to work well. A good way to handle the adds is to have all the ghouls picked up by the MT (the one on the Lich King), and the Shambling Horrors - by an OT(s). DPS should be on the boss. The two tanks should be somewhat close to each other, with the entire raid fairly stacked around the boss. Whenever somebody gets Necrotic Plague, they need to run close to the Shambling Horror(s), while trying to have the Horror(s) closer to them than the OT (so OT -- Horror -- infected player). This way when the Necrotic Plague is removed (and it should be removed within 5 seconds of its application), it will jump to a Horror or a ghoul, and bounce back and forth between the OT (remove it as quickly as possible) and the 1-2 Horrors. The Drudge Ghouls on the MT should die to passive AoE (cleaves, diseases, etc), those on the OTs and the Horrors - to the Necrotic Plague. Besides the adds, there is only 1 ability you will need to watch out for. Infest is the AoE move of this phase - it will do some minor Shadow damage to everybody, and cause them to take increasingly more Shadow damage the longer the debuff stays; the debuff is removed when the target's health reaches 90% and higher. Discipline priests and other classes with absorption shields are especially useful in handling those, as the shield's damage reduction may prevent Infest's damage from bringing the target below 90% health, negating the DoT-like effect. At 70% the Lich King will enter a transition phase - a phase he will enter at 40% as well. At 72-73% the MT should drag the boss to the side opposite of where the Frozen Throne is, and everybody should shift in that direction. At 70% the Lich King will run to the middle of the platform, cast Relentless Winter, and start casting Pain and Suffering very frequently. Form 3-4 groups around the edges of the platform - this way the Pain and Suffering damage will be minimal. Tanks+melee, caster DPS, and healers is an easy way to split your raid. A Raging Spirit will spawn every 20 seconds (25-player: 15) - tank it facing away from the raid (they have frontal silence) and kill them. You should have 3 Spirits on 10-man and 4 on 25. Knowing that one spawns just before the phase's end, you should enter the next phase with only 1 or 2 up. Ice Spheres will spawn, target a raider, deal Frost damage every second to them, and move slowly in their general direction. One ranged DPS should focus burn the orbs, while the melee and the rest of the casters works on the Raging Spirits. Ice Spheres should never get to the raid, as they will explode and likely knock almost everybody off the platform, causing a wipe. This phase last 60 seconds, and at its end the Lich King will cast Quake, destroying the outermost ring of the platform, leaving your raid with less room to maneuver. Naturally, you should all move in when you see him casting Quake. Between 70% and 40%, the Lich King will be in phase 2. He will continue using Infest, but instead of Shambling Horrors and Drudge Ghouls, he will now summon a Val'kyr Shadowguard (25-player : 3). The Val'kyr will target a random raider, lift them in the air, and attempt to carry them (slowly) off the platform, where they can fall and die. All DPS should be ready to switch to those and kill them as soon as possible. They are subject to stuns and slows, so you should use that freely. One way to make this aspect of the encounter easier is to have the raid stay relatively close to the middle of the room, with the tanks in the very center. This way when a Val'kyr picks a player up, her travel time will the highest possible (the Val'kyrs always choose the closest edge of the platform). One thing you will need to watch out for is the Defile cooldown though - at about 5 seconds left on the cooldown, you should all spread out and get away from the middle, so you don't drop it in the middle of the group (see below). The big ability in this phase is Defile. The boss will emote "The Lich King starts casting Defile. " in a raid warning. When he does that, he will target a random raider and do his 2-seconds cast. When the short cast is over, a mass of shadows about as big as Consecration/Death & Decay will spawn at the location the targeted player. This means that if you are able to quickly spot where the Defile is going to spawn, you can move almost completely out of its range before it even spawns (unless you are the target). The Defile will do damage every second, and every time it does damage, its size and damage will increase, which makes it highest priority to get out of those as quickly as possible. At 40% the Lich King will enter another transition phase, identical to the one at 70% - 60 seconds of Remorseless Winter, Pain and Suffering, Raging Spirits, and Ice Spheres, followed by a Quake. The outer edges of the platform will re-appear in the beginning of the phase, and it is very important that you get to them quickly, so Remorseless Winter doesn't kill you. At 40%, the Lich King will enter his third and final phase. He will retain Defile and Soul Reaper, but lose Infest. Instead of Horrors, Ghouls, or Val'kyr, he will now summon packs of 10 Vile Spirits (fewer in 10-man). The Spirits don't have a lot of health, and should be killed quickly, as they will explode after 30 seconds, doing quite a bit of damage to everyone around them. They are subject to taunts and stuns, so use those wisely. In addition to the new type of adds, the Lich King will use a new spell as well - Harvest Soul. In the beginning of the phase, he will target a random raider and channel Harvest Soul on them. If the raider survives the damage, their soul will be transferred to Frostmourne. Players trapped inside Frostmourne will see Terenas Menethil fighting against a Spirit Warden. They will need to aid Terenas - either by healing him or attacking the Warden, - so he can defeat the warden and release the player from the runeblade's grasp. Terenas will do more damage as his health goes higher, so healers should only focus on that. The Spirit Warden has a Soul Rip channeled spell, which should be interrupted as soon as possible, as it will damage Terenas badly. Dropping the Lich King down to 10% ensures that the fight has been won. Watch and listen the cutscene and finish the fight when it is over.Heroic: All three phases are affected by the Heroic difficulty. During phase 1 the Lich King will gain an ability called Shadow Trap. Dealing with it is similar to dealing with Defile - the targeted player needs to get away from everybody else, as the Shadow Trap will cause everybody standing in it to be knocked off the platform after about 3 seconds trigger time. During phase 2, the Val'kyrs will not die. Instead, when their health reaches 50%, they will drop their targets and fly above the raid, not attackable. They will drain health from the raid, healing themselves, but don't pick any more players. This adds a burn element to the phase, because dealing with more than 2-3 sets of Shadowguards is close to impossible. And finally during phase 3, Harvest Soul will become raid-wide. Instead of one player, the entire raid will be sent inside Frostmourne. There, instead of Terenas fighting the Spirit Warden, they will see a lot of Wicked Spirits (adds with very low health), that float above the floor. If they reach a player they do some AoE damage - similarly to the Vile Spirits. There are also "bombs" that fall slowly from the ceiling and explode when they hit the ground. When all the Spirits are dead, Terenas will restore the players' souls and send them back to fight the Lich King. Watch out for Defile when you get out, as you will all be stacked around the boss.
