If your leveling your cooking, and you need these. I find the best place is Redridge Mountains, at Lake Everstill.

Horde can fish these up right in Sun Rock Retreat. About a 50% drop from the pond in the middle of the town.

Cooking these is a great way to level cooking and fishing. I just fished in the Stormwind cannals until I reached 150. I then had enough fish to level my cooking to 150 as well.

NOTE: Be sure to learn expert cooking at 125-150. I cooked 25 fish @ 150 before I realized that I wasn't getting any skill points after 150.

I found the waters in ashenvale to be the best since I fished up about 10 in a row then would catch a different fish then another few of these. These are very useful for leveling cooking from 150-175.

I was leveling fishing and cooking at the same time and was in sun rock retreat. i fished up about 100 raw bristle wisker catfish. I got these 63% of the time according to fishing buddy.

Can confirm that Redrige is a good spot to fish these. Got a Darkwood fishing pole and a 19 pound catfish to in a 30 min fishing grind.

Why isn't there written skill requirement? People should really add that because there are re-tards like me, that don't know if its best to go and kill crabs and make http://www.wowhead.com/?item=2683, or fish some kitty fish. Anyway, according to cummins (And wowhead) they really is good for cooking.

I don't know why it doesn't show it, but the river between ashenvale and azshara seems to have almost 100% bristle whisker catfish. I fished up quite a few there once. Just go to warsong lumber camp in ashenvale and to the river coast, or take the back exit out of Orgrimmar and go over the bridge.

Fished for these in the Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge, to see what percentage I would get. I caught 100 fish, 24 of which were Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish, so approximately 1/4 of the fish you catch here will likely be a Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish.

Also caught 58 Raw Longjaw Mudsnappers and 18 Raw Brilliant Smallfish.

my experience, best place to fishing this in western plaguelands, couse u can find raw mithril head trout too (cooking from 175)

I think the best place to fish these up is the river in Hillsbrad Foothills, for no other reason than it's relaxing. I'm surrounded by big trees, there's a goofy little baby horse and a couple rabbits and turtles running around me, and I've caught 28 in a row so far.

Want to share my 2 cents.

I found a lake that is not marked on the map in Ashenvale (see for location). At this lake I got basically 80% Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish and 20% Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper .A very good spot to fish if you want to level cooking from 50-125.

This fish is common to fish up in Stormwind, Orgrimmar and most level 1-35 areas. The best droprate will be in level ~20-22 zones.

Maybe things have changed since Cataclysm, but I just spent 2 10 min. sesssions in a row trying to fish in Ashenvale.

gear = basic noob fishing pole and Nightcrawlers (+50) fishing

session 1, 10 minutes, went from 55 unmodded fishing skill to 100 fishing skill.
location: the lake just south of Silverwind Refuge ( I am Horde)
take after 10 mins, 45 skill pts.
13 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
16 Longjaw Mud Snapper
8 pcs assorted junk.

session 2, Southfury River
10 mins. same gear, skill lvl went from 100 to 128
catch
8 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
28 Longjaw Mud Snapper
1 pc junk

All in all, much better in the lake south of Silverwind imo. Some of the posts below are old and pre-cata, so figured I would update this info... good luck

I have found that the little lake in Arathi Highlands (38.58, 72.09) is a really good place for those too lazy to fly all the way down to the Redridge Mountains. I've been here for 15 minutes and I already have 2 stacks. If you are exclusively looking for Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish then this is a really good spot to go to.

Info for HP gain is wrong in both Raw and cooked pages.

Correct info is:

Raw = 348hp /21s

Cooked = 860hp/24s

So far, the absolute best place I've found to get this particular fish is Nek'mani Wellsprings (44.1 - 48.7) in The Cape of Stranglethorn. You'll need about 225 fishing to not get grey junk on cast.

While fishing up Raw Mithril Head Trout to level cooking on an alt, I found that there were only 2 types of fish to be found in that pool. The trout and the catfish.

Here are my totals by percent. Unfortunately, I don't have the hard numbers handy:

Mithril Head Trout 61%
Bristle Whisker Catfish 34%

The other 4% was Mana Potion and 17 Pound Catfish.

So, two birds, one pool basically. :D You can save the trout for use in later cooking and you're not filling your bags with Mud Snappers you've probably long outleveled.

Keep in mind, if you're a lowbie, there may not be a safe place to stand and fish at this location. The Wellspring is surrounded by Naga used for a quest chain.

Edit: Went back there on an at-level alt (level 31) to fish up Mithril Head and there is a rock that protrudes into the water and a small bit of space on the hill right next to the rock. If you're on a lowbie, with some careful positioning, it looks like you could safely stand there as there is only a single Naga Explorer that comes near the shore opposite of where you'd be fishing. I don't know how people are coming up with "70% drop" for these in places like Ashenvale, Arathi, etc.

The ONLY place I've ever fished these, Horde or Alliance, in my 10+ years of playing this game, and had a drop rate of (slightly above) 50% is at Lake Everstill in the Redridge Mountains.

If you're playing Alliance, it's not a problem.

If you're on a Horde toon, log out, grab a toon with a flying mount, and head to Stonard. Fly over the mountain peaks to Redridge (north-northwest) and then fly along the river. When you get to Lake Everstill, there are some rocks that form a bit of a natural dam to create the lake. You can land on those rocks and fish from there. You're far enough away from the Alliance town there that, if you're playing on a PvE server, you won't aggro any of the towns people. Don't flag yourself and you can fish all day.

If you fish below Lake Everstill, you're going to catch a lot more Mud Snapper. Make sure your mini-map says "Lake Everstill."

As a level 20 I fished for 10 minutes in three locations in Ashenvale, My fishing skill was 100 + 85 (Baser Skill + Gear)

First location Nightsong Woods (East of Splintertree Post & half way to the Southfury River - eastern arm of an inverted V) I caught:

31 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
9 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
1 17 Pound Catfish

I then moved one river west (western arm of the inverted V) and my catch rate was as follows:

31 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
14 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper

I then moved east again:

27 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
12 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
2 Mana Potion

These are the best rates I have found to date.

Whilst I have fished up plenty in capital cities, I always catch far more Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper and Raw Brilliant Smallfish.
