You can't go wrong with the pendant. You'll outgrow the Glacial Spike, and the Fire Ruby is tedius if you use any other trinkets. The pendant, on the other hand, is a neck piece that grants spdmg and the 6 intellect makes it that much better.

Morphaz is located at the bottom of Sunken Temple. He is linked to another dragon, but they are easy kills. You should definitely do this quest if you're running ST at all, and you should be running ST for some exp and items as you prepare for the Outlands.

Personally I'd go for the neck piece, because it has the longest life.

Instead of the Glacial Spike I use https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=17719 from Maraudon (very bottom of the instance after you kill the Princess and Rottgrime).

I won't comment on the fire trinket, because I'm a frost mage. However, that just gives a burst, the neck piece adds onto your damage permanantly as long as you're wearing the pendant.

I recommend the Fire Ruby as there are a lot of better necks and weapons out there. Trinkets are not as easy to come by.

The Glacial Spike is totally useless. At 52, when you acquire this quest, Frostbolts (Rank 9) cost 225 mana. And at 6% chance to return 50 mana.

Out of 100 Frostbolts. (22500 mana) You'll get back 300 mana. (I am aware statistics don't work like that exactly, but roughly)

To comment on the Fire Ruby, although you may not be specced fire. It is still very helpful, as any spec, you should still be using fireblast. Which does receive the +damage.

If you think it is too tedious to swap trinkets, the Fire Ruby is a great PvE trinket. It's not often you'll require Insignia of the Horde/Alliance in an instance. Also the restore to Mana will help a bit in long combat in instances.

With the Burning Crusade expansion, this as well as many other quests have been made irrelevant. Since you can head to Outland at level 58, by the time you reach this quest, you'll want to be grinding and instancing your way to 58. Until Blizzard updates the old Azeroth content, anything you would have quested or instanced for will be quickly replaced in Outland. It just isn't worth the investment anymore to spend that much time or effort for stuff you won't have very long.

I think it is worth noting at this point that since BC came out and there are Jewelcrafters out there, the dagger looks a lot more appealing. You're no longer looking at a level 60 cap anymore where you might end up using that neck for quite a while, and the dagger will help you grind more efficiently.

As for the neck, look in the AH or ask a Jewelcrafter to make you one of these if you can:

The dagger is pretty underwhelming. A 6% chance on casting Frostbolt to restore 50 mana is effectively 50 * 0.06 mana off each spell, or 3 mana back per spell.

The necklace is an upgrade, but not a huge one. I'm frankly disappointed in the trinket. Having another button to bind and a thing to click on which just doesn't help that much, I'd rather skip. Compare with the Diamond Flask for the equivalent warrior quest which gives a large boost for around the length of a typical difficult battle: https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=20130

In short, the fire trinket could use some buffing.

I think that the trinket is the best thing there. The necklace and dagger are easily replaced fairly soon, whereas the trinket can last you well into outlands, since trinkets are so much harder to come by.

Only the foolish would take anything but the fire ruby. Consider how fast the dagger and necklace will be replaced, and then consider the rarity of trinkets and their functions.

Post TBC these items are all pretty useless:

Necklace. If you look at https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=20966 you can see you get 7 more spell damage by using a charge, as these things cost about 1g to make (or 50s to buy on AH from a levelling JC) then this a nominal cost of just 5-10s a charge. This item also buffs your group so it better for instances.

Trinket. In comparason to https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=21769 this thing is just an embarrasment. It's once only use is pretty poor and will not contribute any meaningful damage over time. The mana back is nice but with mana gems, potions and evocation I rarely run short of mana, even in long fights. On use trinkets like this one I find rarely get used as often as you might think, I would prefer a simple passive trinket like https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=10659 to this.

I doubt I would bother replacing my https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=7714 with this. Chain casting Improved Frostbolt (2.5 seconds casting time) will only produce an average equivalent of 6 MP/5 which is pretty low. Given that you will not be casting FB's in a row and will be mixing in other spells then you really won't be getting much mana back at all. Another way of looking at this is that you will be getting an average of 3 mana back per cast of FB - that will lower your level 50 FB from 225 mana to 223! Look at it compared to this dagger https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=20647 - which you can get at level 54 by popping into Silithus and asking any random 60+ to help you kill and elite for a one-step quest on an inn poster.

Basically these items need a serious buffing, I wouldn't use any of them. Compared to some of the better items for other classes in the level 50 ST class quests (eg. Diamond Flask) I find the Mage ones a big disappointment.

I would be inclined to say that of the three the Fire Ruby is hands down the best of the rewards.

I think we can agree the mana return on the Glacial Spike is not worthwhile considering other options.

The Necklace is easily replaceable as you can see above.

The Ruby however, improves your mana efficiency, returning as someone said an average of 250 mana every 3 minutes. This is roughly 7 mp/5, though it will end up being slighly more useful than that as it will come in larger chunks, which could mean an extra cast.

The 100 fire spell bonus may seem only useful for Fire mages, but I know that leveling my Frost Mage, there is one fire spell I cast very frequently. Fire Blast! Frost is short on instants, and Cone of Cold is short range and rather mana intensive for a single target. I tend to finish off mobs with Fire Blast even as a full frost mage, as well as make use of the instant cast to do big Frostbolt/ Fire Blast Shatter combos. To make use of this trinket a simple Fire Blast macro can be used to minimize the hassle.

/use Fire Ruby
/cast Fire Blast

As instants get 42.86% spell damage, you'd recieve about an extra 43 damage on Fire Blast whenever the trinket is up, as well as the mana back. An extra 65 damage on a crit in a Frostbolt/Fire Blast shatter combo.

Hardly useless for a leveling Frost Mage!

I would encourage any leveling Frost Mage to take the Fire Ruby for juicy Shatter combos

Indeed there is a nice dagger or sword for one hand+offhand....I go with a 2h all the time, more stats, more sp, this blade blows anyway...

The necklace is pretty sexy. For mages, there have been a serious shortage of +damage necklaces, especially at the blue level. While the trinket would probably be a better choice for fire mages (+damage trinkets are even harder to get ahold of than necklaces), frost and arcane mages might want to seriously consider grabbing the necklace. Personally, I have the Orb of the Darkmoon so I'm going to grab the dagger, but for others its a great choice.

Nah, ya slap that trinket on, hit your target with five Scorches (make them 100% vulnerable to your fires), throw up a mana shield, activate the trinket, hit your Combustion and crank out a level 8 Pyroblast! sssssbOOM baby! Im looking at thot. Im looking at my map. I tried to go around mountains, up them find a secret path, follow the river in, everything. Of all the posts on here, not one has help in doing the quest or how to get to the stinking temple. Everyone is complaining about how much the stupid items suck. I think they all suck, but i want to finish the quest. i have better items than all of them. Its frusterating me that i cannot find entrance into the place to waste it. Im going in circles trying to get to that yellowed area thot says it is. Its very hard to navigate mountains if youre a gnome that cant see over bushes. lol please post a worthwhile comment on here about how and where quest is located. Not about how reward should be better.

The quest giver is up in the mountains...at the foot of the mountains is a guy(elf of some sort i think) that gives you a ride up to the top...follow the path up the mountain once blinked up there and there is a tower where the archmage is. I had a quest to go talk to the guy at the bottom actually...may have been given to me by the chick in dustwallow marsh. Tabetha? So, yeah...thats how it starts. Good luck, I haven't completed the quest yet, unfortunately...we lost our priest to the Disconnect Disease just as we killed Jamma'lan, so never got to the dragons and morphaz.

This is actually something that i just figured out while doing this quest. For quest specific items to drop you have to be on that quest. So all the other millions of people out there killing the same mobs NOT on the quest are factored into the drop rate as well. I think the drop rate is actually closer to about 33% from my experience doing the quest. If nothing else i hope this stops everyone getting so pissed off at the retardedly low drop rates of quest specific items.

The dagger sucks. U will get a better dagger/sword/staff before u know it. The necklase is a little better, but there are some better ones outthere too. Im lvl 60 and still using the trinket, it got a short cooldown and is realy just like an extra mana stone.

Take the trinket tbh.

And yes we mages need some better water soon or i will go crazy. i got over 8000 mana and spend alot of time sitting down.

Blizzard! gives us some lvl 60 water that restores 8000 mana over 10 sec.! We cant drink in combat anyway so what is the point in using 2x30 sec to get full mana?

Take the trinket, by far.

Rank 10 Fireball at level 54 would essentially be a free cast and has a base damage of 475-609 and dots for 60 more damage. The full +100 damage should apply as its a 3.5 second cast, and as the trinket would nearly replenish all mana this spell uses this is essentially a free cast for about 725 damage. I'd take it even without any points in fire talents.

The trinket is good, except does the + to damage and mana always give you the maximum? from the way I read it it gives you +1 to +500 mana so on average +250 mana, same with damage.

on second mage up to 60, first time i took the trinket and i must say it's a nice trinket but later on to 60 u'll get so may trinkets that u can't even find the one u want to spam it...this time i'm gonna choose the neck as there are no neck items with +dam until end game instances and i got +28 mana/5 sec at lvl 51 ...so think well before u pass on a very nice neck.

I'm not sure what part you're confused about. I'm only a level 40 mage, but this seems fairly straight forward to me.

Step 1: Kill Morphaz, loot Arcane Shard
Step 2: Return to Archmage Xylem
Step 3: /dance

For those who were asking how to do the quest itself:

Join a group for Sunken Temple. It's an instance; located in Swamp of Sorrows. (Actually, gather up the 5 other quests for Sunken Temple before going, so you can do them all at once.)

Sunken Temple has all these annoying things that need to be activated in the right order, so you might want to have at least one person in your party that knows the place if you don't want to spend eternity there.

usually i never comment or n-e-thing here but in this case with this horroble place that i hate with passion, i finally found morphaz and im willin to share it wit u; cuz i dont want u guys to suffer. ~~ so wen u first go in the instnace, make a left to the room goin up in a spiral way. then hes dead ahead with another dragon. make sure ur group has, tank,priest,another mage or lock and a pally. good luck.

It's funny how everyone is comparing the three rewards for quests like this. Whenever I have to make a decision between three fine rewards, I simply look at what I already have on. I'm a level 50 mage and from the final boss in Maraudon I already have a better necklace (2 levels better) than the one here ("Gemshard Heart"). I'm not convinced the frost dagger will do a fire mage any good, besides I already have a weapon that's one level better ("Resurgence Rod"). I'm a level 240 engineer so I can make plenty of trinkets, even though this trinket is decent. That leaves me with one option: choose the items with the highest vendor trash value which is the dagger, by a long shot. The main reason for doing most quests is the XP, not the loot.

How is Gemshard heart better? It has no damage & healing which is what counts.

I was recommended this Pendent as an upgrade to mine but as I am a warlock I imagine this series of mage quests is out of bounds to me. The Armory has a lot to answer for as I keep being told of upgrades that I am not eligible for or ones that are too low or too high a level for my present one.

None of those items are worth trying to put together a party and go into an instance. If I had a couple of quests there already I'd do this, but only for the experience. I'm at lv 50 (undead fire mage), and I've already got better gear than any of that crap. To me, the only one worth anything is the trinket.

But to be fair I'll break it down.

The dagger: I'm using the glowing brightwood staff with a +22 int chant, and I never use frostbolt. Besides that, a 6% chance to restore 50 mana? Are you kidding me? I have no spells that cost 50 mana...even if I was spec-ed for frost this would be useless.

The pendant: I got VERY lucky and found Horizon Choker for a decent price in the AH...+4 stam, +4 spirit, +14 int...yeah, sure, I'll trade that for +6 int and a VERY MINOR damage increase. Then I'll go out and smoke some crack. I will never understand why people get all hot and bothered by something like a +16 damage bonus...16 damage is a very minute fraction of how much damage I do with my spells. Even with my instant casts, which usually do slightly less damage, the 16 damage is a drop in the bucket.

The trinket: This is the only one that I would take, and it's still not that great because the benefits are random. I'd rather use it during PvE than my Insignia of the Horde, so it's not all bad, but that whole random thing is a big turn off.

So yeah. The only reason to do this quest is the experience (or boredom).

No offense but you guys arent' thinking straight. I'm a 60 mage and have not yet gotten the choker of enlightenment. The pendant is by far the best thing you can get pre-mc...for any 60 mage. I got the dagger, thinking the mana boost would be better, but it was quickly replaced. Now i wish sooo bad that i could go back and get the neck piece...don't think about it, just do it!

The dagger is a nice idea, but 6% chance with spamming 221 mana cost frostbolts every 2.5 seconds is just not good enough.

The trinket's damage increase is nothing special for single target spells (pyroblast, fireblast, fireball...) as it adds a grand total of up to 100 damage to the target. It could be used with Flamestrike & Blastwave for better use.

but...

The neck is deffo the item to go for. If you're into +dmg (and everyone should be), you know there's not a good +dmg neck in sight for a long time. The neck from DM is +1 crit, which, compared to this one, sucks. :)

The cooldown on the trinket is 3 minutes and it's nice to have another mana restoration item to go along with potions and mana gems. The extra 100 damage to the next fire spell isn't bad either, definitely nice to Pyroblast or Flamestrike.

Go to the Temple of Atal'Hakkar (Sunken Temple) in Stonard.

There are four corridors when you enter the temple...take the left corridor and go up the staircase. Morphaz is in the south exit leading from the main hall (it's a very large room with several exits, you can't miss it).

I must say... the pendant looks great for me.. a lvl 50 frost mage... every piece of gear i have adds a bonus to damage. This necklace is not as good say... as my Triune Amulet for mana and mana regen but in addition to my frostweave gear it will help with killing mobs... especially with spells like blizzard. If you don't want the reward don't do the quest. :)

ST should only be done with an awesome group or a 70....end of story. without either, the runs gonna be tedious, long, really boring and your healers gonna die a lot from the little Atal'ai slaves and the Nightmare Whelps that nobody else can grab. (Edit: UNLESS a REALLY smart shaman who recently rspecced grabs their aggro) I know.............way too well.........

Dagger: Pointless. Upgraded soon and there are better daggers and of course staves out there anyway for about this level. Total stats: +4 INT (60 mana), 6% chance for frost spells to restore 50 mana.
Pendant: Better INT boost than the dagger, nice damage boost, although healing is sort of pointless for mages of course :). Total stats: +6 INT (90 mana), +16 damage to spells and effects
Trinket: No INT boost, but restores 1-500 mana with +1-100 fire damage on next fire spell. Good but totally unpredictable. Total stats: Usage=1-100 extra fire spell damage on next fire spell, 1-500 mana restored.
I would vote on the trinket if not for one thing: its unpredictability. On usage yes, the bonuses to mana and damage are nice, but that'll happen maybe 2% of the time. Most of the time it'll be a 200-300 mana restore with maybe 20-50 extra spell damage. Unless you're lucky.
I have to say, though, even with the damage and intellect the pendant doesn't look as nice as it could. There've got to be better ones at same or even lower levels.

...as far as the 'level 50 class quest' goes, mages appear to have been well and truly shafted by Blizz. The hunter and priest rewards are obscenely useful and generally all-around ass-kickin' right up to 60. (Just make sure you think about the future when you pick. My poor &*!@#$% took the tooth, and it sits unused in his bank now that he's MM. Hopefully TBC will make leaving it there all this time worthwhile.)

Of the mage rewards, the only one that doesn't warrant an immediate boot to the head of the mage's player for choosing it is the pendant, and Stormpike will happily upgrade it with a FAR superior item (Stormpike Sage's Pendant) in 5 short levels when the mage hits the laughably-easy-to-obtain rank of Honored.

All-in-all, my heart goes out to mages. This is one for mages to do for experience alone, unless the mage happens to be an enchanter, in which case they get a nice shard to go with the XP's.

Sorry guys, guess Blizz was too busy making shadowpriests and BM ^&*!@#$s happy with this quest to spare a thought for y'all.

i was looking forward to it wen i hear there was a new mage quest, but these rewards suck bad.id say the best item there is the dagger, just because wen fighting ragnaros u need as much mana as u can get, and all u really use wen fighting him is frostbolts. and for the necklace, its not that good either, just grab a choker of enlightenment from lucifron, easiest boss in MC IMO. the trinket isnt so bad really, but if it was for the whole minute that your fire spells had the up to 100 + dmg, it would be awesome :P.

I just finished this quest (finally...). I can now answer the question that many people had: how to find Morphaz! You will need help for this but can reach him fairly rapidly. As you enter the instance, take the the first corridor to the left. This should get you to a circulat set of stairs leading up. You will then get into a large round room with lots of dragons in the middle. Morphaz is straight ahead, in the corridor leasing south from this room. He is a level 55 elite dragon and has a friend (same stats).

Description

There is a green drake deep in the sunken temple of Atal'Hakkar by the name of Morphaz.

Years ago, he overwhelmed me in a bold ambush and consumed my apprentice whole. While the loss of an apprentice is not unknown to me, this particular one carried an arcane shard of unsurpassed size and quality.

You must gather powerful allies and delve into the temple. Destroy Morphaz and recover the arcane shard from his ageless stomach.
