The hardest part of this quest will likely be getting enough regular scorpid scales to make the gloves and breastplates. Check the auction house often. Also be sure to check for the actual finished items, as you don't have to be the one to craft the gloves/breastplates.

For the worn dragonscales, you can either buy those or get them off the whelps/dragons in the canyon directly behind the Dragonscale trainer.

Are these proficiencies still up after the BC!? Cuz the old patterns that I have who used say that a specific skill of LW (like dragonscale, tribal, etc) was required to craft the items are no longer there!

Not sure if this is exactly correct, but I know most of it is. ALL patterns/recipies/craftables BELOW 275 skill are craftable/learnable by ALL proficiencies of Leatherworking. The thing I'm unsure about is the 275 threshold.

i unlearned Elemental LW for 100g then went to the book and am now at this guy. but no quests are offered. what do I need to do to get DS LW? I talked to a Gm and they said to check forums...

For an enhanced Shaman, is DS Leatherworking the better of the 3 special types? It seems to me that there are more recipes to learn, as well as useful sets of armor for myself. Thanks :)

I have one simply question....where did you all get the recipe of scorpid breastplate and gloves?I've lvl up the dragonscale LW now (I'm lvl 70 ^^)and I don't have that recipe and those items aren't in the AH. What can I do?

The patterns:

You get the chest pattern from the Weastlander Bandit's
3.2% drop
Hands Patther : From the Thief's at the same
place. 3.1% drop

Worn Dragonscale can you farm in Dustwallow Marsh 2.9-4.6. some rar spawn and elite whit higher drop rate. level 41-45.

You can also get it in Swamp of Sorrow. level 41-45 drop rate is 4.5-5.5 <---best drop rate.

Or you can go into Sunken Tempel and skinn the dragons there. they are elite so you need a party 48/49-55+ instace.

Scorpid Scale: You can farm in Uldaman or Tanaris they have all 39.60 to 39.90 drop rate. the 46-47 scorpids in tanaris can drop from 1-2 and same in Uldaman.

Thick Leather: I think you got it from before. But if you need it there shall be no problem, you gonna get it while skinning the other Mobs.

Happy hunt. or you can buy everything from the AH if you got the monye. Not always there.

I tried to get the worn dragonscales in DM, and I must say that beside the dragonscales, wich it took me five hours to get, I ended up with 125 pieces of thick leather..............but it was worth it though.............

I was originally a tribal leatherworker, and was pleased to find that to unlearn that profession, it would only cost me 25 gold, and not 100 gold. I don't know if that is due to a recent patch, but it is nice to know.

The price to switch specializations does scale with level. I forget the exact cost, but at 70, it cost me 100g.

If you are over 45 this shouldnt be a problem quest really, If you get in a group for sunken temple (boring, i know) and you skin everything there, you should get some worns AND green scale (head start for later hint hint) plus the EXP for being there and a lil loot to hold you over till u get DS, then hit tanaris for the scorpids and thick leather, you should have gotten a good amount in ST and the scorpid scales will drop at a decent, but not wonderful rate

all-in-all, fairly easy if you are of lvl

If you have 2 charecters, ones a blacksmith and ones a leather worker, how are their 40+ mail armours gonna compare if your leather takes dragonscale leatherworking?

blacksmiths can make infinitely more mail armor than leatherworkers because until a certain point LW is all leather. and dragonscale armor has very few recipes, not to be confused with all of blacksmithing.

Yeah crafted items are often better than Tier 4, or at least equivalent. You need these to get into raids to begin with > to get the better gear :) Crafts are a great thing. LW is also good for other things like Riding Crops and Armor Patches/leg patches ^Oldiron79.

Anyway. I found that the scorpids in the Blasted Lands were great for farming the scorpid scales for this quest. The only Scorpids i could find were in the NW corner of the map, but there lots of them. Three close together etc (Whereas in Tanaris they are very spread out & slightly lower drop rate). Some kill i got 2 scales, some i got 1, and a few just Thick or Rugged Leather. I would recommend the Blasted Lands for farming Scorpid Scales. If you are Horde, either fly to The Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula- And you are in The Blasted Lands, or go to the Swamp of Sorrows and ride South-West.

These Items must be skinned, they dont just drop -So Dont take your lvl 70 to get them for your lvl 40 if you dont have skinning!

Your leather working has to be at least 225 for you to pick up this quest. Make some night scape headbands until you reach 225. (Start making them at 205)

The quest giver is at 62,57 in Bad Lands.

Besides the material gains of a crafting profession and the chance to obtain some fairly good (in some cases exceptional) pieces of armour, I feel the best part of leatherworking is the feeling of satisfaction you get from making items that people will use. Many low level players can really benefit from a couple of new armour pieces and offering it to them at much lower prices than they'd normally pay for comparable equipment can really improve your reputation and make you a lot of friends. Combined with the natural choice of skinning as a partner profession can improve your experience and makes you really feel like you're getting the most from hunting mobs and turning it into a viable trade. Seeing a profession as simply a way to access equipment denies you a very worthwhile gaming experience.

I followed the earlier post saying that the recipes that are needed for the items in this quest drop off of wastewander thiefs and wastewander bandit.

It should be noted that you can ALSO get these from https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=5623 and https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=5615. If you are a little higher level, killing these will in the end net you less time farming because they both have a chance of dropping BOTH recipes. With the lower level wastewanders, only one recipe will drop from each type, so if you get the recipe off of the bandit, then you have to go around searching for a thief for the other, and thiefs are in short supply. Just go a little south and kill the rogues and assassins.

I'm a level 43 hunter and I was already planning on making these without knowing that they were part of a quest. The scorpid armor is really good hunter gear in my opinion. I did the wastewander justice quests and got all 5 scorpid peices.

ok, never commented, but had to throw this is in. i'm a pack rat and periodically have to clear out my banks of all the rare ingredients i hold on to, but never use. i just spent forever in tanaris farming for the recipes for these two armor pieces, gave up, checked the AH. they were there and really cheap, 80s for each of them. when i went to the bank to pull out my scorpid scales i realized i had the recipes the whole time. somewhere in the past i came across them, and because i couldn't learn them yet; stashed them away for another day.

the point is, make sure you don't already have them. if you don't, check the auction house. there were dozens when i went.

Best place I found to get these Scorpid Scales is inside Uldaman entering from the back door which you can find just North East of the quest giver. Once you enter evade the enemies after the first door and continue straight. Where the cave forks take a left and continue until you see a group of Deadly Cleft Scorpids. This group and this group only will drop the scales. Kill, loot, skin, and run back out of the instance, reset the instance and repeat until all scales are farmed. I spent about 3 hours killing all the scorpids in the dungeon before I realized that only the clutch described above drops the scales :( dont make my mistake and good luck!

I found the best place for the worn dragonscales is Sunken Temple. I got a stack in one run. Have a high level friend run you through and score a jackpot.

It's mail patterns you can learn.
In the AH sometimes you see some dropped patterns (very expensive, but they will give stunning blue items!).
If you can't wear Mail, don't take it. (Look at your trainer, does it say mail? Hunters for instance can learn Mail at level 40.)
The patterns for the Tribal and Elemental skills are for normal leather. By the way, some dropped patters are for mail too, without a apeciallity needed like Dragonscale. For instance, you can learn Turtlescales from a trainer (neccessery for getting this quest done), but dropped scorpid patterns are specialisation-free too and still be mail. (I found mine in the AH.)

Mail leather has a lot more armor, but you have to be smart in getting rings, trinkets and other stuff to wear, even get things enchanted, to get your neccessery amount of bonusses on spirit, intelect, etc and highly needed resistances. High level opponents are tough!

And occasional looks into AH's and friendly guildmates will help you get the materials at lower levels too. Low level draginkins and welplings have a lousy droprate, that's true. Start recruiting friends for a guild and get those better dragons with a team. ;)

I've done both Elemental and Tribal LW on other characters. And for hunters (which is what my new LW is) I seriously suggest you do NOT take Dragonscale LW, not only is it slightly difficult to compete for the colored scales that drop. Also, the things that you can make are more for Shaman, infact, except for the Dragonscale Gaunlets which you'll use even before you probably even HAVE Dragonscale LW, it's pretty much useless for hunters. Lots of +spirit, + intellect. But nothing that has any worthwhile stats such as Agility. Once you get past Scorpid armor your best bet is to start hunting down drops that you can piece together much better stats with.

Make sure you are not wearing any of the turn in pieces when you turn in the quest. I made almost a full set of scorpid armor for myself before I turned in the quest and the questgiver took one pair of gloves and one breastplate from my inventory and one pair of gloves and one breastplate right off my person. My gloves were enchanted with riding enchant which cost me about 5 gold to have done and quite a while to find and the GM I talked to told me they are working on the glitch but can do nothing to recover my lost items or enchant my gloves. I was wicked pissed.

Ok, i've already decided that im gonna do Dragonscale, no changing my mind. But i've been farming the whelps in badlands for the worn dragonscales for about two hours (thats like 100 whelps) and i haven't gotten a single scale. Am i just really unlucky? Where should i go?

If your are lvl 50 or higher just join a group and go through Sunken Temple, Green Dragonscales and Worn Dragonscales drop like candy in that place

As soon as I hit 40 I went over to badlands, grinded for about 3 hours got 1 scale out of it, grouped with a druid before he logged and killed 1 elite dragon and 2 scales dropped. I then headed to tanaris to get the recipes and scorpid scales, this took about 4 hours and I hit 300 skinning during this time, once I did that I went back to Badlands. I grinded for about another 3 or 4 hours and got the 10th scale. Went back to the trainer and looked at Dragonscale Glove's Mats. I don't think i'm going to make them for a while.

Well i just got the 2 recieps and other mats necessary from AH....i created the tough scorpid brestplate and gloves...i also got the worn dragoscales form AH....and there u are...solved this in 5 minutes and only costed me 7g.

Dragonscasles are a pain in the arse to farm i managed to pick up 20-30 from Auction House so saved me a lot of time. Handed Q in to m8y and was able to learn gloves,chest n legs mail. All good armour but if your making to sell you will not be able to sell the legs(best part of the armour imo) to anyone apart from vendor as they are bind when picked up....Nightmare!

I have a 34 hunter that used to be a pretty nice 29 twink, and i was able to kill 1-2 of the dragon whelps at a time, they are very ez, and i am looking forword to getting the dragonscale leatherworking quest.

As far as i remember the best place to farm for dragonscales is eastern part of the Blasted Lands. Elite dragonkin have a drop rate of around 10% whereas the whelps and any other dragonkin are a lot lower. If your lucky Auction House is the quickest and most pain free way of getting your grubby little mitts on dragon scales you shouldnt really be paying more than 3G a stack which is cheap considering how much of a pain it is to get hold of.

You Must have skill of 225 and at least lvl 40 to obtain any of the specializations.

On the wild leather question I believe I read that its required for you to do the wild leather quests in order to go the primal lw route, and will not hurt you if you want ele or dscale.

to complete the quest YOU MUST have those patterns

1- Pattern: Tough Scorpid Breastplate ( drops from Wastewander in tanaris )

2- Pattern: Tough Scorpid Gloves ( drops from wastewanders in tanaris )

You need to make 2 breastplate and 2 gloves , the matts are 36 thick leather , 40 scorpid scales ( best place in tanaris ( south ) , keep skining those scorpids .

and ..

6 x Silken Thread

or try the easy way and buy them off AH.

after you make/buy them you will need 10 x Worn Dragonscale , best place to farm those are the dragons southern Dustwallow Marsh around ONY cave , i didnt test any other places but i got 10 there in about 30 min .

This trainer is for horde , if you are alliance and try to go to badlands for the trainer you're stupid .

At higher levels of dragonscale leatherowking the stats bonuses are actualy quite nice for hunters. It is only at the lower levels when they are not good for hutners but only shamans.

The paterns for the gloves and breastplate are very easy to find in Tanaris from the Wastewander Bandits (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=5618/wastewander-bandit) Took me about 10min for both paterns.
Also the scorpids scales can be skinned of the scorpids in Tanaris. Took about 1,5h to farm all the 40 scales together. By the time I also had enough thick leather.
I skinned the worn dragonscale off dragonkins in Sunken Temple. Already had them in my bank before I started the quest, so that was a luck =)

Got all my Worn Dragonscales from Dustwallow Marsh, The Den of Flame (38,66?) from the Firemane Scouts, Ash Tails, and Scalebanes while on another quest there. Glad I kept them :-)

Just need 2 Tough Scorpid Breastplates so it's back to Tanaris for now.

Is there any need to specialize with the expansion? Like tailoring has the varios BOP patterns that only Shadowweave tailors can do for example? Are there any patterns like this for LW or am I just not seeing them?

I started this line of LWing late. I am currently a level 51 Hunter and trying to do this quest. The drop rate is HORRIFIC! I spent 2 hours this morning killing and skinning the elites dragons in the badlands and not a single worn dragonscale dropped. I'd rather fight a level 55 or even a 60 elite dragon if I knew I'd get at least one dragon scale. Are there any in the game?

do sunken temple. repeatedly. the dragons in the center there drop worn and green scales. as soon as you kill ALL of them, go kill jammal'an and you can come back to the same room and kill dreamscythe and (insert other dragon's name here) which each drop 2+worn, 2+ green, and 2+ thick leather. also, hazzas and morphaz each drop the same amount. note that these larger dragons ARE bosses, or minibosses to say the least. furthermore, make sure you are the only skinner in your group.

when you get out, reset and go right back in. you can get around half a stack of each scale per run through, maybe an entire stack if you're lucky

I had a great deal of luck following around all the level 70's going for the new Azure Whelp companion pet in Azshara (implemented in 2.3). This very much worked to my advantage as I walked out of there with two stacks of worn, a stack of blue and several stacks of leather. They are a bit higher level though.

When I did the quest I farmed the dragonkin in Swamp of Sorrows and was very fortunate to have some decent drops (about 1 in 5 was either a worn or colored scale along with leather and often two at a time).

I found I had less luck with darters as suggested but perhaps that is dependent on the time of day and the amount of other people hunting the same creatures.

Got 10 worn dragonscales from the southern area of dustwallow marsh. Here is the 'kill' break down:

Searing Whelp - 1 out of 6 kills
Searing Hatchling - 1 out of 6 kills
Firemane Scalebane - 4 out of 27 kills
Firemane Flamecaller - 4 out of 34 kills

Started out in the badlands but no drops, even from the elites. Went to dustwallow and got'em in a couple hours or so. Got 1 - 4 silver per kill along with heavy & think leather.

If u want the Worn Dragonscales go farm in burning steppes u need to skin them when u skin u get leather all dragons in burning steppes can be skinned and as a little bonus u can also get black dragonscale

When u are grinding for scorpid scales for the Breastplate and the Gloves go blasted lands to farm them :) btw u need the recipes for though scorpid Breastplate and though scorpid Gloves nothing u learn from a trainer they are really not that hard to get

I'm a lvl 46 Hunter with 225 LW skill. I haven't started the tribal or elemental skills, and I am trying to do Dragonscale LW. When I talk to the NPC all he says is 'Goodday Mon' and nothing more. What do I need to do to get the quest for Dragonscale? It says I should have been able to attain the quest at lvl 40 but I can't seem to figure it out and no one on WoW knows why. Is the quest broken?

Alright.. enough of the mis-information. I am lvl 42 Tauren Hunter. I was 225 LW when I went to get the quest. Actually, I had all the quest items ready before I even went to Badlands. Thorkaf is directly north of Camp Boff on your map. Just south of the ravine where the Whelps are.

I went up to him, got the quest.. turned in the items and viola! I am a Dragonscale Leatherworker. I immediately made the Dragonscale Gauntlets, woot!

Now, a few hints.. Worn Dragonscales at this level are a pain in the ass. I tried all over for them.. I eventually bought most of mine in the AH at about 50s each. Its really worth it vs. the amount of time you will have to invest farming unless you get really lucky. Your choice, and mileage may vary.

Scorpid scales drop pretty well off the Scorpid hunters in Tanaris. You need 40 of em, and the xp at my level was pretty nice.. not to mention I made good $$ as well. You can also kill the Steeljaw Snappers there for the turtle scales which make nice mail armor as well. Not to mention they drop good $$ making stuff too.. the pearls drop fairly well from the clams they have.

Anyway, If you are Hunter or Shammy, Dragonscale is definitely the way to go in my opinion. Good luck all..

Last thing: I had a skinning of 292 when I began and 300 when I finished.. I don't know if the skinning lvl makes any difference on your scales drop %. Just an fyi..

Is there a MINIMUM level to get this quest? I want to know because I have a level 60 skinner, but only a level 20 leatherworker. I was hoping to get my level 20 up to 300 in Dragonscale leatherworking so he can make my 60 some stuff =)

I think there are no specialisations any more. I bought a tribal recipe without any quest or being forced along that specialisation. Sounds much better now as you can make anything.

Basically i wanted to find the dragonscale leatherworker but no one ever gave coords or a general area. then i searched the forlorn ridge or something like that in aszhara. i finally found the tent after searching for a whole three minutes... well the guy can be found at (37,65) once you find him u get the quest and need to farm about 40 Scorpid Scales. i did that in tanaris since theres a million of them. well good luck fellow dragonscalers...

Okay, im a lvl 35 rogue with 300 skinning and 300 LW and i went into dragonscale leatherworking, you dont need to do ANY wild leather quests in order to do dragonscale i got my dragonscale THEN headed to feralas and did some wild leather quests. It may put u on path to tribal but its not like it will force u to do it cuzz you would have to accept tribal leatherworking training from the special trainer. anyways just see the dragonscale trainer in badlands( near the middle ) and THEN go do wild leather quests thats wut i did like 2 days ago.

This branch of leatherworking, I assumed, would make good hunter gear and shammy gear. after the expansion I hoped for a change that added at least something a hunter could use.....

I was very wrong in hoping bliz would do this. there is no leatherworking good for a hunter 40+ even the new expansion items you can make are far outdone by common green drops. if you are a hunter, leatherworking helps tremendusly untill you hit 40, then you might as well unlearn it and try a different profession

I picked up the WL quests in Camp Mojache, but haven't completed them yet (damned wildvine drop rate stinks). Anyway, here is my dilemma. When doing a Wild Leather search on allakhazam, it tells you that by completing these quests it will put you on the Tribal Leatherworking path, and you will no longer be able to take up Dragonscale or Elemental LW.

Is this a bit of misinformation? I really need to know because I figured completing them was necessary for moving on to any of the 3 LW paths, but now I am not sure.

I found that Aszhara was the best place to farm the 10 Worn Dragonscales. I had a friend kill them and I skinned them. Even with the help it took me 25 mintues to get all 10. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to do this if I did it by myself.

The best place I have found to farm the worn dragonscales is in Sos. I got about 15 in an hour and a half, plus about 15 green as well. The lvl 43 and 42 green and captains drop the most, sometimes 2 at a time. Watch out for Somnus though, if you aggro him, run into the pool of tears, he cannot go underwater.

I agree about Taneris for scorpid scales. Got 30 in two hours, plus the xp for grinding was awesome. (Do people say awesome anymore)? I got most of my turtle scales from Dustwallow.

Confirmed as of Patch 2.3.0 (11/25/2007), You do NOT need to complete the Wild Leather quests prior to the Dragonscale Leatherworking quest, though you must be a level 225 Leatherworker.

As a level 70, it only took me 50 minutes to grind all of the scorpid scales in Tanaris. I was able to purchase a stack of Worn Dragonscales off of the AH for 75s. At the time of completion, I still had the Wild Leather quests in my quest log, all three incomplete.

Ok everyone is saying a hunter should go Dragonscale, but have you looked at the patterns? Elemental gives double the stats and half the armor. So if you want armor stick with Dragonscale (mail so double armor, but half the stats). But, if you are like me a BM then i want the Stamina and Attack Power of the Elemental...not to mention all the agility.

Yes, if you're a shammy or hunter do dragonscale. The mail armor is pretty good, and the other two types of leatherworking don't make any mail armor (as far as I know). If you need dragonscales, go to Dustwallow Marsh and do the dragon quests there; that's how I got all mine. The scorpid scales for the armor might be a little more difficult. Go over to Tanaris and whip every scorpid you see. The drop rate (skinning) is like 14% which isn't bad you know.

40 some percent of the scales I got fighting all around that area are from the walking ashtail dragonkin. There are camps you can just walk back and forth killing in, plus the cave.

Probably took me an hour, but I also got three other quests completed in that time.

The hatchlings are the worst drop rate for the scales, from my stats.

Bring 2 Tough Scorpid Breastplates, 2 Tough Scorpid Gloves, and 10 Worn Dragonscales to Thorkaf Dragoneye in the Badlands.
