One of the early daily quests for the continuation of the Netherwing faction rep grind. Introduced in patch 2.1
This one is for skinners. There are variations for miners and herbalists, as well.
It's a little mis-leading, with the reference to the crystal formations, as I've yet to find any flayers outside of the mine south of the fel orc camp where you pick up the quest.
Drop rate for the hides is...eh. Got 25 in about 2 hours; need 35 for the turn in. 250 rep per turn-in.
Definetly pick up the nethermine crystals quest (for the same rep grind) before you head to the mine, as they crystals drop relatively frequently from all the creatures inside.

Nethermine Flayer Hides are skinned from the Nethermine Flayers located within the Netherwing mines. There are two entrances into the mine, though both entrance paths join together in the mines. While in the mines keep your eyes peeled for glowing Netherwing eggs

Entrance 1: 65.2 90.2
Entrance 2: 62.9 87.9

The Flayers are located towards the back of the mine, when you enter, follow the mine cart tracks on the left and you will eventually come to a junction in the tracks, you can stay left to find a few flayers, or go right and follow the track that loops north, into the main area full of dead miners and flayers.

Also, kill the blood of draenor mobs as they drop encrusted objects that can be opened that can sometimes contain flayer hides, netherdust pollen, and other stuff that's mostly useless.

For skinners the drop rate of the hide is quite low, my average rate was roughly 12-18%, sometimes in the 20's if I was lucky. On the plus side flayers drop plenty of Netherwing crystals and the occasional Netherwing egg along with cloth and coin.

This is a very frustrating quest, and makes me wish I'd had the foresight to take mining or herbalism (since both seem easier). I killed a whole bunch of flayers last night inside the mine and only got *one* hide. It seems a bit unfair that herbies and miners can just locate nodes but skinners get screwed with such a lousy drop rate. It's especially annoying (though I'm sure fully intended) that one can't get one's non-Netherwing-seeking friends to help out, since the peons in the mine are all green to me but red to anybody who isn't on the quest line.

I'll try the ravagers and bursters as suggested--maybe the drop rate on those will be better.

One of my characters is duel gathering mining/skinning and only the mining quest is available. He didnt even give me the option to choose the skinning quest

This quuest is inhuman. On the other hand, the hide does not get bind to you at any point, ergo you can buy it from AH.

There are SO many poeple trying to get to exalted, corpses litter the ground inside the cave. It's a skinner's dream. Ive gatered enough hides to last me 2 weeks of daily quests.
Not to mention the regular leather which sells very very nicely.

waste of time for anyone who doesnt have mining. skinning rate sucks. i would rather spend 5 hours doing something productive.

Note that if you have both herbalism and skinning, you are only able to choose this quest OR the one for Netherdust Pollen (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=11017), but not both during the same day. You can, however, always get the quest for Netherwing Crystals (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=11015).

you can get the flayer hides from skinning flayers, ravagers or crust-busters (though i would not recommend killing these) in the mines (entrance south of the orc camp) while also doing the quests

you can skin flayers that other players killed, but it still takes a bit longer to get all 35 hides than the 40 crystals or the 15 flayer/ravager kills. all in all, you should be able to complete those 4 quests in under 50 minutes.

I got lucky and followed a group of Pally' around the mine. They just killed em and mined the ore, but left all the skins for me. Found 40 in about 15 mins LOL :)

I found one of my hides from the sludge things in the mine. it was in a slude-covered object -- just a thought. (That's why I looked this page up in the first place.)

Dear god. If you have skinning and herbalism, DO THE NETHERDUST QUEST. The drop rate for the hides is horrible.

EDIT: The hides drop even if you don't have the quest for them. So, always do the netherdust quest until you collect 35 hides while doing the other quests. Then turn in the hides instead of doing the netherdust one day.

Doing this quest in the last 2 days has netted me over 12 netherwing eggs from the mobs. It's definitely worth doing. I'm back in grinding now for more eggs and stocking up on the hides. Have got enough hides for two turn ins already as I never leave until bags are full. The trash alone is averaging 30g per run.

It may take you longer to get the quest item for these mobs, but if you want quicker rep, the netherwing eggs are worth the grind on this quest. Good luck!

The drop rate is so horrible I'm passing this quest although I'm a skinner. It does not make sense. Herbalists and miners have it more easier. At least if the drop rate would be 99% but this really sucks, guess I would need half a day to make this one. Same goes for the Netherwing crystal quest. Worst daily quests ever -_-

I found 5 flayer hides twice in those sludge covered objects they drop.

You can also obtain them by skinning Nethermine Bursters, which are in the same general area as the Black bloods of Draenor

You need to be 355, in other words able to skin all the flayer mobs 70-71. Once you hit 355 this quest should unlcok.

I say should because I hit 355 in the mine and got to 359 before getting out. However it seems unlikely that the unlock point would be between mob levels like that.

I did not see this quest with 350 skinning. So you have to at the absolute minimum be 351, again I doubt that and I would say the likely level is 355.

Please pass this on, no one seems to know it.

The flayers on the island with the ghost dragon for the helmet quests also drop them when skinned.

As of phase 5, May 29th 2022 it requires 355 skinning for the Taskmaster to offer the quest.
