Araj is located in the middle of Andorhal. Coordinates: 45,69 He has a few adds around him so I would suggest a group of at 3-5 level 55+ (Note:he is a 61 Elite)

You can solo Araj with a warlock or hunter

Just set your pet to go attack a distant mob, pulling agro from everyone around Araj, then focus all your DPS on Araj and kill him quickly.

If you dont have enough time to get the scarab before you die, just soulstone or rez there and send your pet off again...

You can (or you used to) be able to kill him on your main and then loot the scarab on an alt, same for the phylactery. Anyone else who had the quest in the area could loot the items as well. Haven't tested this since pre-2.0 but about to check now. =P

I just completed this quest today. Araj had been killed already so I was planning to camp him. The Phylactery was there and I looted it so yes, you do not need to be the one to kill him to get the scarab.

To get the item from Araj, you basically need to:

Kill him (Araj the Summoner).
Loot the object (Araj's Phylactery) he spawns on his death.
You are done!

Quick info
Now to do this might be a little tricky if you are alone, now he is supposed to be a 2 man (or higher) "boss". Luckly you can solo him as a ranged class! With some DPS and smart use of enviroment you can solo him without a problem (at least no problem for a Frost Mage, probably Fire too :P)

Approach the Ruins of Andorhal from the South-East road.
Clear a bit when going forward closer to the boss (Araj).
Take a quick look at these 3 pictures (the pull, the jump and the dps spot).
That's about it!

when you go back to the NPC to turn in the quest, the last line of his dialogue is: "...infusing it with the power to breech the locked door of Scholomance"

Isn't that a typo? It should be BREACH not BREECH.

there is an easier way to kill him... there is a quest a little to the north west of the ruins that give u an item that if i remember correctly lowwers his health quite a bit. so try that out and give some feedback.

Just tried to solo this as 60 BE Paladin and this has got to be bugged or something. Araj is standing in front of a water fountain type thing with 5 mobs behind him, 5 mobs in front of him and 1 mob patting on either side. I cleared the pat on his left side, then went around behind him and cleared the 5 mobs, then went around further and cleared the one pat on his right, then cleared the 5 mobs that stand in front of him. I then killed the single mobs that are in a couple of the buildings near him, and when I finished that an elite like those big white guards you see in Undercity came walking by so I took him down. Now I had the entire area cleared and Araj stood by the fountain alone. I recast all my buffs, auras, etc and hit him with Exorcism. He did not move but stood his ground and started casting shadow spells. I ran up to him to start melee and unleashing Judgements and next thing I knew 8 mobs had run in from who knows where and started beating on me. I cleared the entire area but when I aggro'd Araj 8 mobs were on me in half a second. On top of that, Araj summoned 3 ghost hound things which means for some reason I had a 60 elite (Araj), 8 mobs and 3 hounds all on me at once. Needless to say I died. I did the corpse run and when I got back to rez a level 80 Death Knight was fighting Araj. Since you don't have to be the one to kill him to get the quest item you need I just stood back and let the DK do his thing, he took Araj down and I went in and looted and rode out. Quest complete.

Kill all the undeads near him, they will engage combat when you pull Araj and the mobs are still alive.
Once you kill him a magic urn will appear right on Araj his left overs, everyone can loot the quest item even people not in your group.
The box stays around for a good 5 minutes!

Ps:
Don't forget to loot Araj his corpse, it might be hard to target with the urn right on his corpse.

As of 3.0.8 I soloed this quest with my lvl59 reasonably well-equipped protection warrior. I guess this means a pala would be capable of this, too.

Go in from the side and aggro each of the four groups of mobs - there's one at each entrance to the square where Araj is standing. Wipe them one by one. Once these are gone, go in and kill Araj himself. If you don't, they will ALL attack you once you hit Araj - then you can only survive with a healer and dps behind you...

There's a flesh golem running around town, if you get unlucky he will run by while you're at it. You may want to wait for him so that you can deal with Araj uninterrupted.

I did this quest with a friend and believe me when i say....."Its hard".....araj is easy to kill woth the right group but its the mobs that get i the way....we died but killed her so we ressurected and ra bck to get the scarab.

You can use the attuned damper of Chronie vs Araj, this will help alot, so u can fight him with only two guys. Araj must not have 100 % hp to use the damper.

There is an NPC in the in of andorhall (nort west in andorhall) wich has a repeatable quest, where you have to collect some andorhall watches spreaded out in adorhall (see the specific quest for more info), that gives you a "damper" that can be used on Araj.
It does some damage to Araj and reduces his damage 25%!

if you are a warlock or hunter.

Just send you pet to attack a distant mob and let the agro follow him, then you have Araj alone who is fairly easy to kill despite being a 61 elite. Kill Araj, die, rez, send pet again to get the sracab (requires 5 secs / interrupted if hit).

I'd hate to spam all sections that have to do with Araj on how to kill him, so check out this section of thottbot in which I wrote a detailed description of how I managed it without using any cheap tactics (hunters can stand on items out of reach for mobs and do ranged attacks against him I read, though I don't know if that is possible still with all of the new patches)... for classes like paladins, there aren't very many ranged attacks in our arsenal... so this is one way that worked for me.

If you are a warlock and you want to get the warlock epic mount, you have to have this key in order to enter to Scholomance for the Imp Delivery quest.

I did this quest and Alas Andorhal last night solo, cleared the non-elites on the east side of her first then attacked her got her down to under a 1/4 then died, 61 lock. I though got close give it another go cleared the mob to the east and then a lvl 70 mage came through and killed everything. Looted the urn Araj dropped and cmpleted both quests.

It is not worth it to go through all this if you're a rogue since rogues can pick the door to Scholo at 280 skill.

You have to have the Argent Dawn Commission Trinket equiped during the fight to loot the Scarab.

Don't you hate it when quest chains run so long by the time you get there you've forgotten why you came? I decided to clean out my quest log today and guess what was in it? That's right, "Fireplume forge" and another gem you might of heard of called "Chasing A-me 01." Really, could these require just a little more travel time, please?

First "Chasing A-me" has me running from Un'goro to Strangelthorn, only to find that the item I need is sitting in a lvl60 20man rated dungeon," and then I follow that up with "Fireplume," which leads me to "Araj's Scarab" and of course I have well outgrown the quest.

Anyway, I was there so..... ran solo as a 64loc, not a dent on me. Used my favorite sidekick "summon inferno" (for you affliction locs who don't have it, get it from impsy felwood - another drawn out quest I might add, but worth it - http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?source=live;wquest=7603). With inferno unleashed and a few good dots a loc of decent stat can easily take elites +1 or 2 his level. Lots of fun.

I just ran the inferno around the square and mopped up. EASY PEASY!

I dont think the "Alas, Andorhal" quest is bugged anymore. I completed that one a few weeks ago. Im not going to pay the 15g for the part of the scholomance quest if this one is still bugged though

Solo'd Araj as a L63 Warlock

The ghouls on the path on either side are the key to breaking the camp. When they are closest to the Skeletal elite guard, pull them, the elite will assist, allowing you to kill them before killing Araj

With the two elites down, sent in the Felguard and lots of dots, then chain cast health funnel.

Had to hit the Health Stone, but did not even lose the pet.

Adding a WoW Classic-era comment to confirm you don't even have to be the one to kill Araj (or even in the group that does it). I just tagged along with some Alliance (I'm Horde), and helped them kill Araj, and we were all able to loot the Phylactery.

So, if you have the quest, but are having a hard time finding a group, hang out in Anderhol, and wait for some people to show up, and tag along. Plus, you can farm scourgestones, cloth, etc while you wait.

tried doing the Quest today with Alas, Andorhal. seems buggy again, alas Andorhal worked. arajs scarab not, tried it several times with relogg and abandon quest, not working for me

Araj the Summoner lords over Andorhal from the ruined city's heart. We know that he was the former leader of Scholomance before claiming the city as his own. To finish the key, we will need his signet - called a scarab - mounted as the head of the key.

Make your way into the heart of Andorhal, and break his hold on the city now that he is drawn into the open. Once destroyed, seize his scarab from his fallen phylactery!
