Use the book in the little round house, the mob will then appear in the doorway, give you a bit of a lecture and then attack.

Read the book lying on the ground of the circular building at the top of the mechanognome/robot structure at 64, 22 and Mechazod will appear behind you. He'll give a small speech and then you can kill him and loot his head.

The entrance to the tower is about 65,22.

Be careful about the undead that run towards the tower. Although they might fight the robots around the bottom of the tower, they seem to defeat them a lot and proceed towards the ramp and onto the actual tower where they might aggro.

Interesting this quest has been out so long...No one commented on the script in the manual. Students, can anyone tell me what form of writing inspires that script?

When I was in a party during this quest and my friend summoned Mechazod, I didn't get completion on "The Gearmaster's manual researched" . Had to click it myself after we killed him. Hope this helps!

Most likely, he'll be found in the command hut on top of the structure. Go inside and research his works.
