Go to the dock (right outside Swamplight Manor 54.9, 25.4) and place the torch at the end. After a few moments a bat-like creature will appear that you must kill. Easy.

Using the torch spawns Zelfrax (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=23864), level 36 bat like creature. Flagged as NPC for me, but Exorcism worked on him so must be undead.

As soon as he is summoned you you have to wait before u can attack. If u stay a little farther back from where u summon him, u shouldn't aggro him when he finally comes..allowing u to sneak attack him.

For a Warlock.(like me) you CAN enslave him..its very fun.

It's not a bad idé to Enslave this demon actully, you just let Zelfrax fight one of those Risen Spirits, Zelfrax will lose ofc, so at about 15% you summon your imp and finnish Zelfrax and your done.

He is pretty easy so you can just solo him without enslave anyway

Just to add to all the other warlock comments here: Yes. Enslavable. Great. However, as I have discovered, if you enslave Zelfrax and attempt to use our hearthstone to bring him back to Northshire Abby and terrify the new players, it automatically deletes him. You just turn up with no scary death-level-as-far-as-noobs-are-concered demon.

Blizz nevers lets us have any fun.

I jumped off the dock to wait for him and accidentally discovered that once you aggro him he paths the long way down the dock to land then around the dock and towards you. That added travel time made it even more trivial to kill him.

Pretty much easy quest , if ur a rogue , after you use the touch just stealth , then cheap shot and kidney shot the bat , he will badly move

It seems you can't summon Zelfrax while Mordant and Jarl are in the middle of their little "I brought you a housewarming gift, Jarl"-event. So wait for them to be done with their talking before using the Witchbane Torch or you'll have to wait for the cooldown.

To diverge a bit from the lock lovefest, as a 33 priest, this was easy enough. Dot bubble and wand for the most part. Easy level 36 with no curses or abilities. Straightforward and easy. Nice conjuring sequence.

For those who didn't notice...

The demon doesn't just "spawn". It was possessing Jarl. When you use the Witchbane Torch, Jarl falls unconscious while a white stream comes out of him, which coalesces into the demon. I did the quest on 3 characters before I ever noticed this. o.O

just found this out and just a heads up for all impacient people that if you place the torch at the end of the dock right after someone else kills him and the NPCs are still talking with eachother the demon bat WILL NOT spawn and the CD on the torch is like 3 times as long as the little cut scene so just wait for them to get back to their spots and place it

The completion text says how his only remaining problem is his friend's taste in furniture, but... There's no furniture at all inside Jarl's house.

Marksmanship Hunters should probably get the boots from this quest as starter mail boots, unless they already have some decent mail boots stored up.
The belt from AB is far superior to the one that you get from this chain and it only costs 20 marks and a couple hundred honor. The AB boots are good, as well, but I would recommend the boots from this quest over forgoing the belt and getting the AB boots- Unless you don't mind spending a lot of time grinding AB.

Edit: The AB belt only costs a couple hundred honor now, making the boots the better of the two rewards.

its easy just put the torch at the end of the dock after 10 seconds he comes i killed him with my lvl 40 mage it was easy 2 strikes and he dead he is lvl 36

it's an easy kill. i did it as a level 31 prot pally, without even healing myself once. any level 33+ should be able to do it with ease :)

Just killed this guy as a 32 Druid. I figured everything else I'm fighting is a 36 so why not try. Started in cat form and got my bleeds going then switched to bear. No heals or pots, not bragging just saying that it can be done at lower levels.

Mordant Grimsby at Swamplight Manor wants you to plant the torch at the end of the dock and defeat anything that appears.

The torch is ready. Plant it at the end of the dock and be prepared to face whatever comes forth.

I have no idea what the torch's smoke may reveal... if anything emerges at all. I must say, I have my doubts about this kind of folk magic, but we haven't time for anything else. For your sake and Jarl's, I wish you luck.
