Sadly, the Black Knight will likely be your least challenging opponent in the Argent Tournament. However, it does have a gotcha that may cause you problems. The fight is in two phases. Equip your lance, jump on the Caballo de guerra Argenta de establo, and then talk to Escudero Cavin. He'll call the knight out for you and you'll fight him on his gryphon using standard jousting tactics. When he's low on health, he will dismount and call you out for hand to hand contact. Do nothing to dismount yourself. When you see him dismount, that is not your cue to unequip your lance or get off your own mount. The game will do that for you and if you try to do it yourself the black knight will probably evade and despawn. While he's buffing himself you will have time to equip your normal weapons. Then just fight him as you would any other non-elite mob.

Edit: Apparently it's possible to kill him while he's still on his gryphon. I personally witnessed this happen once and have heard a couple other reports of the same behavior. Normally he will jump off and face you in hand-to-hand combat, however.

If you do this in a group, you will all get credit - and you can damage the Black Knight even if you're not mounted.

A guildie started it, I invited him to a group- he fought mounted and I just DPS'd, and we both got credit.

Both the Black Knight & his mount have only 50k HP.

The fight starts with the Black Knight on his gryphon (the one you hijacked earlier). He runs into the arena...with no stacks of defend and is HORRIBLE at fighting. The Argent Champion fight is a lot tougher.

If you down him fast enough, he won't force you into the dismount fight. He'll just keel over. If you do that, it's a hilariously anticlimactic battle.

Stack up your defend before you talk to the squire.... he was dead before he ever dismounted and I got quest credit for it.

Note that you must use the "Stabled Argent Warhorse" to finish this. I tried four times riding my Warstrider and the game would not auto-dismount me after the Black Knight did. If I dismounted manually he would evade and then despawn.

Edit: The above problem has apparently been fixed in 3.1.1 and you can't summon unless you are riding the Argent Warhorse.

Other than this it's probably the easiest fight ever. The Black Knight puts up no defenses. Just get yours up to three, Charge him, hit him with your melee attack, and when he moves away to charge you, Charge him first and repeat.

So, you beat The Black Knight on horseback, and he challenges you to fight him man to man? You do just that, but then he runs to the center of the ring and disappears?

I just found out how to keep him from doing that.

After he challenges you to fight him off your mounts, do not dismount on your own, do not change your weapons, do not do ANYTHING. After he is done yelling, you will be AUTOMATICALLY dismounted... allow that to happen, and then the fight will begin. That's when it's safe to switch from your lance to your usual weapon.

The horse you need is along the Keep wall right outside the Champion's Circle. NOT outside your faction's tent like the other mounts.

Patch 3.1.1 fixed an issue where you could summon and fight the Black Knight using a mount other than the Argent Warhorse. Many people were using the Forsaken/Stormwind Warhorses which caused him to despawn when Phase 1 completed.

I just learned that if you kill him fast enough (Normally accomplished by doing an Charge + Thrust), he'll totally skip the non mounted combat phase, just flops over dead, lol. You still get credit through, I did want to see what would of happened otherwise, so I just abandoned the quest, and than redone it with not killing him as fast.

I just killed him today. I summoned him using Squire while I was on the horse, and I didnt actually ever dismounted. I started and finished the fight on my horse, opposed to what people say that you finish him fighting him normally on the ground. I guess it was a bug or sth.

Do not confuse the text reading "Argent Charger" for the mount "Argent Warhorse". A friend of mine ran around for about 20 minutes trying to find an Argent Charger. The Argent Warhorse located next to the Champions' Ring is the appropriate mount for this quest.

In summary:

1. You must be a champion of your home city before you can fight the Black Knight.
2. You must be mounted on the Argent Warhorse, near the flightmaster (in the Easternmost part of the long row of stables), and NOT your champion faction's mount, before you even get a chance to fight him.
3. You can't fight him while someone else is.
4. He's very, very, very, easy. Laughably easy. Maybe to go with the Black Knight from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie he's named after.
5. He sometimes dismounts and sometimes does not. It's unclear whether this is a timed or percentage-based thing. I watched 2 people fight him and he dismounted. When I fought him, he didn't. If he dismounts, DO NOT dismount yourself. You will automatically be dismounted. If he doesn't dismount, you still get credit: you don't need to fight him again.

Just as reported before, if you charge him at a certain health you will do enough damage to completely skip the unmounted phase... I found this out while running my normal rotation on him.

This guys was pathetic. I killed him before he dismounted from his gryphon and he's barely made a scratch on me.

He is faster than the other champions/valiants so you need to act fast but again, he's a pushover so don't be too worried. He'll enter from the gate at Squire Cavin and will not give you distance, so you will have to use the melee attack for a while. He will run off, at which point you charge him and then sunder shield or w/e when you're coming around. Rinse and repeat. And always have your 3 shields up.

Melee --> Charge (when he runs off) --> Sunder shield (while turning out of the charge) --> Melee...

The above is the best method I've found to defeat any champion/valiant.

Just completed this today, bugged when I dismounted and I still had my mount's hotbar. Luckily, my Tankadin buttons were still there so I just Sacred Shielded and beat on him with my lance. I'm sure he felt like an ass. :)

Found a odd thing from this quest.

If you choose never to hand this quest in then you get acsess to the arget warhorse for use in all your Tournamnet quests. While on it you can challenge champions and everything.

You will lose out on the Chillmaw quest and its rewards. But for those of you who dont care to much about those rewards or if you jsut like the Argent crusade then you can run around pretending to be a Arget crusader.

Its same as other mounts just looks different. Also you only get two flags on your back rather then a champions three.

Perosnally I like being a orc on what is basically a paladins basic mount ^^.

I have the quest and I am a champion (i have got the achievment). When I talk to Cavin, I don't have the option for him to summon the Black Knight. What do I do wrong? (I am self 79 lvl) .
I have using the "Stabled Argent Warhorse".
And nobody has fighting with him...

Am I the only one who dismounted manually and didn't have him bug out? I jumped off my mount when he challenged me, equipped my regular weapon, and beat him down with no problems. No evade bugging or anything. Yet it seems like everyone else who jumped off had a different experience.

I have done this quest 7 times now (I know I play WoW too much) and I didn't think anything of the first time I killed him before he dismounted, but the second time it was with my mage, who is female. Thinking back to the first time it happened I remembered it was with my priest, who is my only other female character to do it. It made me think of what he says when he dismounts ("fight me man to man" or something similar). Can anyone confirm/deny it happening on a male character? Would make sense (albeit very little) if it worked this way, or maybe it was just coincidence.

I don't know why, but I can't mount the Stabled Argent Warhorse. I can see it standing there with some other mounts at 72.22. I have my alliance lance equipped, but I just can't see the arrow when holding my mouse over the horse.

Requirements to have Squire Calvin summon the Black Knight:
1 - Have the quest.
2 - Equip your Argent Lance (Horde Lance will not work).
3 - Be riding the Argent Warhorse near the Flight master.
4 - No one else is fighting him.

Requirement 2 is not mentioned thus far, prompting me to post.

I fought him, and killed him mounted on the steed, and while he was still on his gryphon.
He is actually really easy to defeat.
Grab an Argent Warhorse from the stable.
Buff up before you talk to Squire Cavin.
Once fully buffed, talk to Cavin, and ask for him to summon the Black Knight.
The Black Knight will appear from the stables area, and he will run to the center of the jousting ring. Don't follow him, just wait next to Cavin.
You are not able to attack him until he buffs, which only takes a few seconds.
The easiest strategy i have come across on all jousting duels, is to let the enemy run out to the center (which the black knight does right away), then once the enemy is attack-able, i immediately Charge him, run around in a sort of circle away from him, and then shield breaker him. That may seem confusing, but its just like attacking him, and while your horse is in its sprint after charging, just run around in a circle until you are right back next to him. While you are running in that circle, throw a Shield Breaker to take down another shield. After that just thrust him until he runs away again, but do not chase him, just simply wait for your charge to activate (or be in range sort of) and charge and reapeat the circle as mentioned above. Just repeat as needed.

If you didn't read what was above
1. Charge
2. Shield Breaker
3. Thrust until he runs again
continue to step 1 as needed.
This i believe is probably one of the best strategies for any duel in the tourney.
It can down a valiant in under a minute and the Black Knight took me 27 seconds.

I just did this and it did not dismount me automatically like the above posts state. After he yelled his thing about dismounting and fighting man to man, he buffed himself and ran to me and started whacking at me. I ended up just manually dismounting myself and re-equipping my weapon and was able to kill him normally, as if he had dismounted me himself.

Don't know if it is just a new bug or what, but just in case, if he doesn't dismount you by the time he starts attacking you, you can dismount yourself and be fine.

I'm getting pretty annoyed at this one today. First time I forgot and manually got off the mount, he ran away. Then the next time I remembered you usually had to let him dismount you, so I did that and he never dismounted me, so he ended up running away.

Wow this was dissapointing.
While hes mounted he can take about 4 charges before he falls, then he asks you to fight him man-to-man, thats where it gets promising.
Then you jump off you mount and he charges you and... well then you notice he has 12k hp and you 2 shot him and go collect your reward ._.

Waited for him to dismount and for me and then I changed wep and killed him in 5 seconds..

Second time I did the same but kept the Lance equiped and still didnt count...

This quest is currently broken it seems. After defeating the Black Knight in mounted combat he dismounts but at no time is the player automatically dismounted. And yes, I'm using the Stabled Argent Warhorse. You just sit there, on your warhorse, while he his you with his sword. If at any time you manually dismount he will despawn.

As you may know, tournament progression must be re-completed if you transfer factions. This quest can be picked up again but Cavin will not summon the Black Knight. Fret not. You still have your achievement from the previous run and completion is not required for access to the Champion dailies.

As an ally i had complete all the Argnt tournament quest and achivs but as any other functions change you lost some achivs about reputation only!
I still have the achiv ''Its just a flesh woond''!
Now i am in this quest to summon the Black Knight but the npc doesnt have the any choise!

Note: You need to be a Champion to pick up this Quest. I had just turned in the last quest as a mere Aspirant and wondered why I wouldn't get the follow up, you must be a champion to do so. The following taken from Blizzard Website:

Rise to a Champion:

While not all of the daily quests here involve mounted combat, it is the focus of the tournament. All participants will begin as an Aspirant and be given quests to let you practice the basic mechanics of mounted combat against target dummies.

Each of the daily quests you complete will reward you with an Aspirant’s Seal. After a couple days of practicing your skills you will be able to gather enough of these seals to challenge an NPC and should you succeed, you will attain the rank of valiant of your race’s respective home city.

As a valiant you will be given a similar set of daily quests to continue your training, each of these daily quests will reward you with a Valiant’s Seal and after enough days of practicing you will be ready for another challenge, if you complete this challenge you will become a champion of your city!

I can't seem to get this quest? I have finished the one prior and this is not offered. Do you have to finish the 25 stars quest to be able to fight in the ring that the black knight appears in. So they just will not offer this quests till then?

I hate the jousting and put off this quest. When I did it I was amazed at how easy he was. He didn't put shields up like the others do. He appeared on a gryphon and jousted from there. I got him down pretty easily. Apparently his fight is meant to go to a phase where you fight him on foot but I beat him before that happened.
I still hate the other jousting ones. :p

When Crusader Rhydalla directs you to: "Use my argent charger for the battle," she means use the Stabled Argent Warhorse (Alliance and Horde) on the east end of the stable next to The Ring of Champions.

You can get on other mounts, but they wouldn't work. If you use them, Squire Calvin wouldn't summon the Black Knight.

Currently bugged if you don't kill him before he dismounts.

Workaround:
1. Mount up on the Stabled Argent Warhorse with your Lance equipped.
2. Speak with Squire Cavin and summon The Black Knight.
3. Immediately dismount after summoning The Black Knight.
4. Kill him.
5. Profit.

2023 Fix: Dismount right away while the black knight is running into the ring. Bring him down to low health, he will dismount, then you can kill him.

I got everything right. Equip lance and Stabled Argend Warhorse. Horse phase is normal. Black Knight dismounts and he fights with my horse, i will not dismount. I do nothing and in 10 minutes he kills my horse and runs away... enyoy

If you dismount after the Black Knight is dismounted it will evade. Funny how this bug was implemented in classic. The solution. Bring a friend or ask for help. Do not dismount and let someone else kill the Black Knight. You'll get the credit.

as of 1.feb 2023:
* use alliance horse only. if your horde and looking for mount, take alliance one. otherwise npc wount talk to you and give you the black knight to be summoned.
* just fight him on horse
* let him dps down your horse, it will take some time, but he will do it. before you engage him, dont put shields on yourself, it will make it faster.
* when he kills your horse, dps him down, its easy 12,5k hp is few hits.
* done.

if you equip your weapons, hes gone, if you dismount yourself, hes gone. need to allow him to dps down your horse, like you did with his. so he has some pride left before he died i assume.
