Just make sure to loot the hammer before you attack The Iron Watcher.

The encounter with The Iron Watcher is pretty straightforward. Just throw the Battered Storm Hammer at the giant, which will do a lot of damage and stun it. Then run away. As soon as the cooldown is up, throw it again. When the giant is low on health, the game will announce: "The Iron Watcher reels, reaching to its now useless eyes, and charges blindly." It will run to the end of the bridge, which is your cue to toss the hammer one last time. It will lose its balance and plummet to its death.

What was more interesting to me was the story Velog Icebellow tells you as he flies you to the encounter:

King Stormheart is putting you to the test, eh? He must see something in you to begin with or I doubt he'd put you through such a sacred ritual.

I know you're new to our kind, so I'll catch you up a bit while we're on our way over.

Years back, my father and several other frostborn were returning from a trek across Dragonblight. There was a heavy blizzard... far worse than we've ever seen since.

They crossed a trail of blood-soaked snow and followed it to find a dwarf wandering and speaking in a dialect they couldn't make out... and not a dwarf of our kind mind you, but a mountain dwarf - something our kind had never seen before.

The dwarf seemed lost, having no memory of where he came from, or even of his own name. Not being the kind to leave a dwarven cousin to die in the snow, my father's party took him in and continued back towards Frosthold.

Not long later, out of nowhere, the snow burst before them and a jormungar the size of Veranus herself came down upon their party... one of them was swallowed whole before they even had time to react.

My father thought they were all doomed... but behind him, a furious roar rumbled across the snow, and he turned to see the mountain dwarf growing in size, his skin taking on a stone-like texture, and his hands sizzling with lightning.

The dwarf barreled forward with a sound like rolling thunder and hurled a shining metal hammer, lightning coursing over its surface, directly into the jormungar's throat.

The jormungar collapsed instantly, its head barely still attached to its convulsing body. My father turned to the dwarf in awe and raised a fist in praise...

The stranger having no name of his own, my father deemed "Yorg," a name reserved for champions of legend. Years later, he now stands before us as Yorg Stormheart, King of the Frostborn.

King Stormheart has trained us well... turned us into even more fearsome warriors than we could have boasted during the time of our war with the Frost Giants.

And as one of the fiercest tests put upon a warrior of the frostborn, we are made to face a creature far larger than ourselves--giants, dragons, jormungar--as a testament to the fact that size will never be our weakness.

This is the test put before you this day. Return to us only once The Iron Watcher is dead, and be revered as a warrior of the frostborn.

He is slow from the rust of the ages... be quick on your feet and he will not best you. You have King Stormheart's favor - do not disappoint.

If you've seen the cutscene for the quest Frostmourne Cavern, you can probably figure out Yorg's actual identity.

I think this quest is bugged. Both this quest and the earlier quest that brought me to storm peaks. After I get mounted up, about 15 seconds into the flight the stormcrow's name turns "blue" and I am dropped to my death. This also happened on the rocket flight that was supposed to bring me to this town in the first place (I flew myself instead).

A tip to my fellow warriors; When you're in a hurry to get the quest done, and The Iron Watcher is standing blindly at the edge of the platform.. don't charge him to get close enough to throw the hammer. He's immune, and you'll end up behind him.. except there's no platform to stand on.

Solo'd without use of the Stormhammer as a 79 prot paladin in blue northrend gear. Took a few tricks, but nothing I couldn't provide myself. Not wholly sure if this grants you credit for completion though, since I did it with the stormhammer first and beat him down second just out of curiosity.

As stated by previous posts the trick is to use the hammer whenever its off cd and stay away from him. I did the quest successfully the first time then was hovering on my flyer nearby to watch a mage do it. Be forewarned even though i didnt think i was very close his AOE has a very wide radius, wide enough to have knocked me off my flyer causing me to plummet to my death!

I had to post on this cause I just thought it was too damn funny not to, but ok I went to kill this guy like 4 times each time he killed me quick, so I asked some guildies how they did it.

They said its easiest to kite him around, so I play a warlock so I decided to try to fear and hammer. So I ran up to him hammered him and feared him he ran to the ledge and I feared him again so I could use the hammer, and he ran right off the cliff/ledge and I got credit for killing him. ROFL anyway good luck hopefully it will work for you too!

The quest bugged out on me and I was unable to pick up the hammer. =[ I soloed him as a lvl 80 Unholy DK but I had to pop Army of the Dead. (I also only got to summon half the ghouls as he knocked me back halfway through the channeling >.>)

For those who only just got there 60% flying this quest sucks, after killing the watcher I realised the bird flew off and i was left for dead or die of old age from flying, as I speak my Gryphon is on auto-fly in the same direction.

He only has 100k hp so this should be very doable for any class, but quite easy as a hunter (level 80). Used hammer stuns, concussive shots and frost traps to slow him down while I kited him up and down the platform and wailed on him with auto/steady shots between hammer CDs. Stay at maximum range and his knockback won't hurt much. Neither I or my pet ever got below 90%.

For all the druids...keep him rooted and keep yourself hotted, he hits really hard. The roots will break after you use the hammer so make sure to cast it again when he is stunned.

Note - If you are not 80, your spells will most likely miss a lot. So after you cast one root instantly start to cast another one just to be sure.

Haha i knew nothing about the hammer so i went out and got him to half health and died after all my cds were up. I was wondering how this could not be a group quest but thanx to you guys i now know. =)

As a rogue, I was able to complete this using only the hammer (may work for you as well if you have a different type toon):

1. Land, find/pickup hammer, place on action bar.
2. Carefully move to far end of platform where the Iron Watcher is.
3. Inch closer until hammer icon in action bar is in range (glows), throw.
4. Turn 180 degrees run away until hammer CD is done, turn and throw again. The difference is that this time...
5. ...instead of turning and running, thrown the hammer and run straight ahead, underneath the Iron Watcher until the CD is finished, turn back and throw. Repeat.
6. Using this strategy, I was hit with a max of 3 "stomps" dealing about 20% damage to my toon. I never used anything but the hammer.
7. When the Iron Watcher hit 84% health, the script started and he stood at the end of the platform. Waiting..
8. As stated above, one more hammer throw, Iron Watcher teeters and falls.
9. Even though he had fallen out of sight, it took about 10 seconds for my toon to emerge from "combat".
10. Get on your flying mount and turn quest in! Hope this helps you!

I am a level 80 Priest, 13/0/58. (Shadow)

I did this while half awake, and I knew nothing of this "hammer." I read the dialogue "he's slow on his feet, the rust has aged him" and so forth. I figured it wouldn't be a problem, so I just kited him around the platform covered in DoTs. He is fearable, and I killed him without using the quest item. Try it for a little more fun, or if you're just stupid like me.

Level 80 hunter, kited him to death as well. I didn't loot the hammer, having, like Diamond above, taken note of the 'He's slow from age' and assumed it's what you were *supposed* to do.

This quest was actually quite good practice for kiting. He moves much slower than any enemy you will kite, but he is vulnerable to all CCs and slowdowns I was able to use, including Freeze Traps, Concussive Shot, and TNT (Survival). It took a lot longer than using the hammer, I'm sure, but I found it an absolutely delightful challenge to play keep-away with the massive giant. The only hits I took were from his stomps.

10/10 for those who like to kite. :)

... although the use of the hammer *does* explain for me my original thought: how in the world a non-ranged class was supposed to be able to best him. ;)

As a Death Knight, I just Chains-of-Ice'd him and ran around him in a circle until the hammer cd was down, threw it at him, and repeated it. Never got hit.

Forgot to loot the hammer with the warrior I played, protection ;D.. Didn't need to popped 2 cd's and a potion and did fine.. would have been faster with hammer tho, so don't forget to take it.. Makes it alot easier

For some reason I didn't get credit the first time I completed this. Went straight back and did it again, exactly the same, got credit. Buggy perhaps... certainly time consuming to fly there and back twice.

Done with a level 78 rogue. Quite easy if you remember to run back after each throw, wait til cooldown ends while avoiding it and throw again. When it states that it charges blindly, move out of the way (preferably behind it) and it will hopefull end up teetering at the edge of the platform, and at this point one more hit with the hammer will finish it off and send it over the edge.

I can't complete this quest as above. Am lvl 80 Shadow Priest. He runs faster than I do. I throw the hammer and immediately turn and run but he is stomping me by the time the CD is off and am ready to turn. I can get a second throw in but can not get away at all after that since he goes faster than I do. He keeps stomping me as I try to get ahead of him. This is insane. I'm sure he is not supposed to be faster but that is the way it is...every time...6 times! Guess I'll just have to try to form a posse.

*** Was apparently a glitch yesterday. I went back today and was able to easily outrun him. I did it exactly the same and was able to defeat him just as others are doing. I would throw and then run between his legs till CD off and then throw again. Only got hit once or twice and never dropped below 97% health. Very easy quest.

Did solo as 78 Lok. Took off all armor to avoid potential and very high repair bills, kept weapons having haste & spell power. Slowly approached for 1st hammer throw until he came at me, stunned with hammer for 4 seconds, applied fear during that 4 seconds, pursued (did not run away from) him staying away from red target circle around his feet and when hammer was again ready hit him with it again, fear again, repeat until he goes blind & runs to end of the walkway, then hit with hammer 1 last time & he fell off. When he went into snow area during fear, where I could not follow, I'd quickly use drain life to cancel fear and to make him attack me again, then fear or hammer again. Fear was necessary, he would move faster than I could outrun him. Nothing but fear & hammer needed, doing anything else is useless. Never had to wait to rez after dying many times before discovering this technique. Experiment, no repair cost if no armor on & spirit can immediately fly back if you die. This way you can find a technique that works for you without repair bills causing bankruptcy!

Prot warriors get this really easy. I was throwing the hammer from max range so by the time I ran through him the stun was almost over -- so I just turned around and hit Shockwave which doesn't share diminishing returns with the hammer. :)

Solo'd him as an ice mage. He is susecptible to frost nova and deep freeze. With the hammer, mirror image, and my water elemental he was pretty much downed where he stood and never touched me.

I accidentally ALT + F4'ed WoW while I was on the back of the bird of this quest. Once you log back in, it will fly to Frostborn, and it will not stop :P. Thus, you will fly through (!) the mountains, the "hall" in the mountain and through other things, which was kinda funny to see. However, Blizz should fix it.

First i tried to hit the giant with hammer and melee him but it is kinda pointless cuz this guy hits like 5k. Only tactic is to hit it with hammer and run away till he have like 40k hp then he runs on edge and then you have to hit it with hammer again, he loses his balance and falls down.

I tried everything listed above and nothing worked, I could not outrun him before the cd on the hammer. I used traps to slow him but that failed too. I died 3 times and gave up since my repair bill will be higher than the quest reward. Maybe its bugged or something but it was definitely not possible to complete for my lv 80 hunter.

Doable as an Holy Priest, using the hammer.
I first tried it as shadow but the damage you take is so much that you need to heal fast and good to keep you alive.

So, I dunno if anyone else did this but make sure you use the hammer. Cuz I downed the bastard on my own. 80 fury warrior with ulduar 10 gear. It was a challenge but I downed him. Use your pvp abilities that restore health. Very helpful. Good luck! USE THE HAMMER!

Very easy as a Druid.
1. Grab Hammer
2. Get into Travel Form (put hammer on skill bar)
3. Get close enough to him and throw hammer.
4. Run away and wait for CD.
5. Rinse and repeat.

I only took about 2k dmg through out the whole fight.

Here's my Lvl 80 rogue method:

1. Pick up hammer.
2. Throw hammer.
3. Run.
4. Die.
5. Resurrect.
6. Repeat steps 2-5 ca 30 times.
7. Smash keyboard against wall.
8. Buy new keyboard.
9. Abandon quest.

Don't bother with this quest. Too expensive.

As lvl 79 sv hunter with ferocity pet, this was impossible. Died more than 5 times I think. Had help from another hunter and it was doable. DoctoeJ is right. Traps do not work. Redirect doesn't work. You can't run fast enough not to get stomped and at 5k hit your pet won't tank for long. For hunters this should be a Recommended players: quest.

amm.... was really confused at first too... didnt read the q at all... as i arrived i read the text and thought hell ill give it a shot... im a 80 feral and in bear was uber easy.... used frenzied but shouldnt have had, just kept roar and lac up all the time. i forgot to use berserk :P

I was able to solo this on all 3 of my level 80s with little sweat; a shadow priest, BM hunter, and ret paladin... Priest and hunter rquired the use of the hammer, but it was still no problem, but I did not need the hammer with my paladin... I completely forgot about it actually. For paladins just make sure you have Seal of Light up, I also chose to use Devo. aura instead of Ret. aura.

Very easy to do as an 80 druid regardless of spec...simply root, use the hammer, root, use the hammer and repeat a few more times until you see the message that his eyes are useless and then just wait for him to run to the edge of the platform and fall off.

Tried this 4 times and each time I ran out of platform while he still had more than 60% hp left and he punted me into the almost bottomless trench to die. The hammer is a joke and the crappy rewards aren't even close to worth it.

I was stupid, and I never picked the hammer up. But what I will tell you is this:

I kited him as a 79 balance druid and managed to kill him on my first try. Most ranged classes should be able to kite him, but melee should be advised to grab the hammer. If you're ranged and you're up for a fun challenge, I suggested kiting him. It's very fun practice, but I do suggest you bring a mana potion with you, me being a druid, I had innervate.

If you're on the rush to 80, by all means, take the hammer!

I was able to solo him as lvl 80 hunter. I used the hammer, then back off just a little, then place a frost trap (which works!), then hammer, etc.. also, concussive arrows works great to keep him walking slow towards you. My pet died at the end, but I survived with lots of health.

Just to be clear.
He IS able to CC.

Go ahead with your fear/rooting etc.
If you're a caster, or anything like that - you can easily take him down solo.
I didnt knew there was a hammer. (Im a druid). I just kept rooting him, and kiting to death.

Didnt take more than 1-2 minute.
So if you want some fun out of it, and some competition, go ahead! :-)

Druids can use Entangling Roots during the cool down period for the hammer and generous healing. It took me a few tries to get it right and I fell off the edge once ... lol.

You might want to try this one in your skivvies. I got some good advice and followed it carefully: take off ALL your equipment first -- save yourself a humongous repair bill. I must have died over a dozen times trying to do this one before I finally got it right once.

hit him with the mallet this stuns him run to the other end. hit him again and run the other way. after about four times he gets so angry he is blinded. if you have fear it helps to cover the cooldown time. when he gets so angry he is blinded he will walk off the end of the walkway. very hard

2) Approach him and toss the hammer
3) While he's stunned, Shiv him and run away
4) Toss hammer

At about 40% hp make sure you run through him when he's stunned so he doesn't punt you off the cliff

I be more than willing ta lend my shelter and home ta travelers in need, but I'm nae too keen ta force my people inte yer affairs.

I'll tell ye what... my people are warriors, straight and true. On the day a frostborn becomes a man, he has ta prove himself in battle. He has ta show us that he'll not let size hold'm back.

Show me yer as strong and fierce as one of my men, and I'll have them lend ye an ear or a blade. Speak ta Fjorlin over by the cliff to the south there and he'll put ye ta the test.
