This is a very odd but fun quest.

Razorthorn Rise is located just north of Razorthorn Shelf between Terokkar Forest and Hellfire Peninsula. Razorthorn Shelf was the location of the level 60 quest where players had to pick up Razorthorn eggs.

The goal of this quest is the razorthorn plant, which is buried beneath mounds of dirt (both pictured). You have to get under the dirt to get to the root, but to do so, you need the Razorthorn Ravagers in the area to dig it up for you.

To get the Razorthorn Ravagers, you must obtain a Razorthorn Flayer Gland from the Razorthorn Flayers which are in the area.

How does all this work?

You must kill the Flayer, loot the gland, use the gland on the Ravager and suddenly you're a hunter, with your own ravager pet. Use the pet abilities (which appear above your hot bars like a normal hunter pet) to dig up the dirt, then loot the root. It works like a normal hunter pet, too, so CTRL-1 will cause the pet to attack whatever you target.

The pet will stick with you for a while. I was able to get all my roots with only one pet (and therefore only one gland) and have plenty of time to spare. Once you fly out of the area, the pet will despawn (else, follow you on the ground and die or just follow you until you reach the edge of the area).

Totally easy quest.

I should add that the coordinates for the flayers are at about 31.5, 84.0 if you're on the Hellfire Peninsula map or 60.0, 11.0 if you're on the Terokkar Forest map; the whole ridge along this section is covered in them. I also strongly suspect (I am a shaman and therefore cannot prove this) that if you're a hunter your pet will have to be put away.

A question to a hunter:
I'm curious if there is a hunter out there who could answer this question.

If you tame this pet, does it retain its ability to dig up the roots? - Answer (by Frostfel) - No! You do not get the ability.

Upon completed construction of the alchemy lab (during phase 4), this quest is replaced by Rediscovering Your Roots, which has the same objective but is a permanent daily quest that can be completed for reputation and reward, and will always be available once it is unlocked.

This is the only SSO Phase 4 quest. It will be slow and painful.

If you are having trouble finding Flayer glands, just group up with someone who already has command of the ravager, as they can help unearth the roots for you.

At this point there is an evasion bug that is annoying the hell out of players who are trying to take control of ravagers. To avoid this, attack a ravagee from range to test if it evades your attack. If it doesn't you can throw the gland at it to take control of it.

These ravagers act just like a normal hunter pet, for the most part. As a Beast Master hunter, I was able to use The Beast Within/Bestial Wrath, as well as Intimidate while controlling the ravager. Very nice!

The only normal skill that didn't seem to work was Kill command.

Some other helpful tips:

Priests you cannot cast shadowfiend with the pet you tame. But you can cast renew, pom, or use flash heal/greater heal on your pet, i assume this works for all healing classes.

Also you have to have a flying mount no other way to get up there, and theres two types of Razorthorns up there, Godzila posted the right one to kill, but i just wanted to make this a little more clear, you have to kill the "big" ones for the glands and use the gland on the "small" one('s). . Anyway hope this helps :)

One more thing, when you turn in the quest whatever remaining glands you have will disappear, so you cannot keep any extra for the next time you do the daily. Very fun quest Over all imo.

Very buggy quest. My pet uncovered two of the roots for me but then was glued to one spot. Wouldn't move, wouldn't attack, wouldn't do anything. I dismissed him, which put me into combat, but nothing attacked me. I had to kill about 10 more flayers to get another gland, and when I threw it at a ravager it evaded and I lost the gland.

Has anyone had a lot of problems with alot of ravagers evading the gland? 1 out of three times i've used the gland, it is evaded.

Actually, this quest is really fun;

First: Go at 47.7 in Razorthorn Rise, for those without coords: https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/maps=3519:476062
Then kill Razorthorn Flayer and when Razorthorn Flayer Gland drops, use it at a Razorthorn Ravager.
You now have a Razorthorn Ravager under your control. Then use the "find earthroot-ability" at the pet-action bar. The Ravager will automaticly search for nearest earthroot and "unlock" it so you can open it.

I did this quest for the first time today, and found that if you go west of Razorthorn Ridge proper, to about 17, 72 Hellfire, or 45, 0 Terokkar, there's an open space with a ton of Flayers to kill, and no Ravagers at all. Just a heads up for you guys.

This quest is very buggy....There will be a lot of ravagers which cannot be tamed
i would guess about 90% of them. They will evade your gland and waste it. If you walk through them they also will not attack you. To find the right ones keep walking around until one of them comes after you, and use the gland on those ones only!

Make sure the ravagers aren't evading before you use the gland on them, if they are standing in place and not moving, chances are they are bugged.

Some roots, like at (59, 11), will actually keep respawning after digging up the mound. I got all five by picking the same one over and over without digging but once.

When you get a Razorthorn Ravager they have the following abilities :

Rend
Ravager Taunt
Ravage
Expose Razorthorn Root

As a feral druid, doing Ravage and Ravager Taunt makes me able to do Shred even while soloing, and that helps a lot.
You can also heal and buff your Ravager, which also helps a bit.

Just a fun note, hunters can use their beast training on the ravager to give it abilities. I'm not really sure if the pet actually gets these abilities, but it does the animation and everything as if it learned something.

I'm not sure if the pet had dash before, but it definitely did after I trained it :)

When you dismiss ravager he will attack you, staying on same stage of hp as he has while he was under your control...So watch out what are you doing :D

I could not get the pet bar to appear, even after several attempts. It was most likely an addon issue. But instead of disabling my addons, I just made the following macro:

/cast Expose Razorthorn Root

... and it worked fine :)

Don't make the mistake of thinking you can gather these roots without having the quest first - i thought I'd cut a corner and collect them before going to the Isle, but the ravager digs the roots up and you can't loot them!

Most people seem to have trouble with evading ravagers. I didn't have that issue. I did however have an issue of not being able to find any roots to dig up. I ran around that place for 5 minutes just clicking the Expose Razorthorn Root button and nothing ever happened. I was the only one up there, too, so it wasn't an issue of being over-camped. It seems like this quest is extremely buggy.

I can't believe I put this quest off for so long, I kept forgetting about it. This is such a fun quest.. the only kind of annoying thing is the drop rate from the flayers, and they are somewhat sparse in number, so if you have more than 2 or 3 people up there at the same time, it can take a bit of a while to get that drop. Also, the first Ravager I used it on evaded, and it looks like other people have had that problem >.< I think that's a bug that has something to do with people flying away after they're done with their ravager.

But hey, my shammy finally got his first real(ish) pet! And it certainly came in handy clearing a hill of 4 ravagers that had 3 dirt mounds on it. :-)

If you happen to find extra glands, you get to keep them after you complete the quest. I'm not sure if it's a bug or working as intended, but it saves some flayer farming.

I am a BM Hunter & I was able to use all the pet abilities on the charmed Revege. It was usefull.

I spent around an hour looking for the razorthorn flayers, only to finally learn that you need a flying mount to reach that area. The quest doesn't mention this so I thought I'd post so that others would know and wouldnt waste there time if they didn't have a flying mount.

Just as the quest says, fly northeast of Shattrath (Yes, you'll need a flying mount). It's on top of the mountains. You'll see a whole bunch of thorny branches covering the area. The far western edge of it is around 44,5 or so....but it's stretches out across the whole moutain top.

Once there, kill the Razorthorn Flayers until you get a gland. When you get a gland, target a razorthorn ravager and click on the gland. It'll turn green and you'll be able to control the ravager. You should get a pet bar just like a hunter's (if you're a hunter, I'm guessing you'll have to dismiss your own pet first). If the bar doesn't show up, type in /reload consoleui (or /console reloadui ...both have worked for me).

There will be a symbol on the pet bar that looks just like a goldthorn. Find a Razorthorn dirt pile and go near it. Then click on the 'goldthorn' (find root) button. The ravager will then dig up the root (looks like a small briarthorn). You'll then have to pick the root like an herbalist does.

Repeat until you have 5 roots. Then either dismiss the ravager (right click on it's portrait) or just mount up and fly out.

you invariably will have to kill ravagers to get to the roots which you can skin for that quest.

have to kill razorthorn flayers lvl 70 and above to get a gland. You throw the gland at Razorthorn Ravenger lvl 70 or above, the RR will become a pet who will help you fight and will dig at the dirt mounds to expose root. watch for people who will let you do all the work. It will expose it for them too!
don't have to dismiss pet. Auto matically takes their place. Get the roots, dismis the ravenger and you can kill it skin it too! sitting duck. pet comes back too at no lost of love.

This quest is bugged. I am a Warlock and I cannot get the Ravagers. If I have my demon out when I throw the gland, both the Ravager and my pet despawn. If I don't have the demon out, the Ravager still just despawns and disappears.

This quest is bugged. I have lost my "pet" 3 times now. I'm not sure but I think that when the pet approaches a mound at a certain angle, it may assume the position of one of the non-aggressive little buggers, and locks to the position, which then becomes of no use to me. I then have to fly up or out to release the pet and get another gland and continue on to get another pet.

Just so ya know.

I'm afraid I have little to offer here until my reagents are stocked.

Of the supplies I require, there is a special reagent, razorthorn root, that is particularly difficult to harvest.

Fortunately, I know a secret....

Using the glands of the Razorthorn flayers, one can control a ravager there and use it to expose a root.

To find the roots, travel to Outlands and fly northeast from Shattrath until you reach Razorthorn Rise.
