This is the oft-mentioned full PvP zone. There is (supposed) to be siege weapons and a "spirit shard" like token exchange system for PvP gear.
The zone will always be PvP even on PvE realms. (That is, you will be marked for PvP upon entering)
Taken from WoWWiki:
Lake Wintergrasp is WoW's first non-battleground zone solely devoted to PvP action.
According to a fixed, rolling schedule, one faction will defend the keep/mine, and the other faction will assault it. Both sides will fight over towers and siege workshops scattered around the zone.
If the attacking force succeeds in capturing the keep/mine, that faction will defend it during the next rotation. If that attacking force fails to capture the final objective before the next rotation, that faction will be given more resources (unknown to what those might be for now)" to balance out the fight, and give every faction a chance to hold Lake Wintergrasp.
Lake Wintergrasp will feature a variety of new daily quests. These quests include (but are not limited to): quests where you have to ride a mount with an NPC, holding attackers at bay; flying aircraft quests; flying mount quests where you have to lower ropes to evacuate NPCs; in these quests, mounts can hold multiple players!
Before capturing the keep, the walls must be destroyed by weapons

Wow - that sounds like a good BG. Sounds like they planned that out, but i just wonder if it'll be 90% horde controlled and 10% ally controlled.

This is great. I don't think it'll be a instance based area. I.e a BG.
And to be honest, this is what PvP
should
be. Or atleast i think so =P

The only way that this will be a successful idea is if the rewards from it are at least on par with the rewards from battlegrounds. Other wise it'll be a gimmicky thing that
most
people will do once or twice and then never do again. Just like the current world pvp areas (Halaa, etc.)

I don't see this as the best idea in the world. I love pvp but stick to battleground instances please. I'm sure it's going to go the way of all the world pvp on most servers. Since there is no faction balance you're going to have 5 to 1 ratios and a faction domination on the zone depending on the server. Just look at halaa and the other world pvp spots.

Seems to me that they're going to great lengths to make sure this place stays balanced. World PvP has been sorely lacking in WoW since it's inception, with the new PvP daily quests in Outland being, at best, symbolic. I think this type of zone is a great idea to introduce a sort of world PvP to the game, but I can picture them implementing a queue system of some sort on being able to enter the zone. That would suck pretty badly on heavily populated or poorly balanced servers, but it might be the only real way to keep it balanced. Only time will tell, eh?
All that being said, having a zone dedicated to world PvP kind of goes against the essence of world PvP to begin with.. it's supposed to be spontaneous, IMO, and this seems to make it just a different sort of grind. It's only world PvP in the sense that it takes place in non-instanced space... I have my reservations about whether it will compare with the good ol' Tarren Mill/Southshore tug-of-war games from waaaay back when, but again, only time will tell.

on pvp servers all enemy faction kills should award a token/shard to turn in for better gear. that would be excellent, with more tokens/shards dropping from world bosses to encourage major city raids. really agressive on pvp servers which currently its all queues and far to organised. really looking forward to this zone I hope its a main one where everyone has to go.

Also, according to
This post
on the wow beta forums you can use
this quest
to get to Lake Wintergrasp pre 77. From the wow beta forum link above...
Requirements: level 72, horde, several prequests.
Follow the "Victory Nears..." quest chain in Agmar's Hammer, Dragonblight until you get to the fifth step,
"Blightbeasts be Damned!" Link:
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=12072
Run to icemist village, and call a Kor'kron War Rider using the flare gun.
Fly up and north, until you crest the ridge.
You'll get the 10 second "You're leaving the combat zone!" warning followed by an ejection from your war rider, but by then you're safely into the zone.
I'm filing a bug since this probably isn't intended, but until then, enjoy. :)
Anyone know if there's an alliance equivalent?
For horde only seems like through D:

I red somewhere, that when this zone is captured by one of factions, this faction could get some "shards" of bosses in some instances. (like towers in terrokar -> instances & auchindoun)
If this is planed to be "only-pvp" zone, this idea is really bad.
Unless rewards for those shards would be only-pvp usefull.
I mean its not good, if some pure-PvE-raider in T7 must go to winterfrasp fight some pure-PvP-pvpers in S5(6) to get some great PvE usefull things :(

There is also a rank system for this zone. When you get 1 Killing Blow, you receive rank 1. Whenever you get right now 10 Killing Blows, which will be changed to 10 Honor Kills, you gain rank 2.
For ranks, you are able to go to the vehicle factories. At different ranks you can make different Siege vehicles.
Rank 1 = Catapult
Rank 2 = Siege Tank
Rank 3 = Planes (This is what i was told, have not been to rank 3 yet)
Rank 4 = ?
This makes it more fun and gives you a reason to get more involved in the combat. Also as of right now you have to have at least one person with rank 2 in order to win, this means if you can't get someone to 10 KBs then it will be impossible to win without the siege tanks.

Looks like there will be a raid boss for the wintergrasp winners
We have a lot of rewards lined up for Wintergrasp but most importantly we are planning to introduce a new raid boss that will be available to the winning faction for the 4hr duration that they hold the fortress. His name is Archavon the Stone Watcher and he will be available in both 10 and 25 player raids. The zone will be located inside the Wintergrasp fortress. The current plan is to put him on a 3 day reset but we will speed this up during beta to 30 minutes for testing. As an added bonus, the faction that holds the keep will also have a portal open in Dalaran that ports players directly to fortress for easy access! The portal will be de-activated during games however.

Because players flying around on mounts here would be unfair massacre of lower levels, any player entering Wintergrasp on a flyer will be dismounted upon entering (or so i read) so it's recommended you don't fly in too high, or you will most likely splatter all over the snow below you =P

This balancing, if done well, would be awsome. I have been concerned this would turn out to be another Halla ie total crap. We need real incentives to PvP here, and balanced fighiting. We need attacking/defending NPC's on both sides, and real rewards. By that I mean every PvPer needs to come here often to get their gear. Such as Arena Gear requires 50marks as well as point cost, and 35 for honour gear or somthing. It would be a real shame if it turned into a thing where only 2-3 players are doing this at any time.
It is almost like Battleground's before they were cross server (only these have no person minimum or maximum). Couldn't they just make this another BG (as well as Strand) so we have 2 cool things to do?
EDIT: Oh wait, 1500honour 500 Arena Points for the winners (and give the loosers 500honour and 150 Arena Points)
I am SO there!

How to get to wintergrasp on low lvl:
Go to storm peaks and die - you will get a flying spirit mount, with which you can reach it.
Then find only place where you can ressurect - spirit guide near
flight master
Done it at lvl 71

This place will mostly likely be tweaked a little...probably making the honor and arena point gain less(maybe even destroy arena point gain.)And to your "mate", 200k honor and 100 marks each is a huge bonus either way.

Theres only 1 problem with the current system as it is now. You have a max of 15 vehicles at once when attacking.
Too many people on getting Rank 1, go and make as many catapults as possible.
Unfortunately, if you're the attacker, thats an auto-loss, as you REQUIRE siege vehicles to get the walls down & storm the keep.

As a Beta Tester I can confirm that Wintergrasp sure IS a lot of fun.
The siege weapons are surprisingly easy to control. Nice one on that Blizz!
Wintergrasp was undergoing a major stress test like 2 weeks ago and it had to fight with massive serverside lag. However it is getting fixed and finetuned every day(which you can really feel). The battles were quite epic with over 200-300+ players in one place.
Regarding Ranks:
At the time beeing there were no "ranks" as there were in vanilla wow.
However you were getting Ranks as buff, exclusively for Wintergrasp. You can increase your rank by getting HKs and higher ranks allow you to buy siege weapons as well as flying machines.
There are also stationary turrets for the defenders to help defend the Keep. Easy aiming, easy control, nice damage but still
not
overpowered. I like that.
As to some of the believes, that Blizzard might implement a "queue" for this zone: I highly doubt it.
Reason is that a whole Premade PvP server was made just to stress test this zone. So I'm sure Blizz is aiming for open world-pvp action without queues.

inc huge wall of text, lol... now that my precious beta is gone i figure i'll take the time to sum up my wintergrasp experiences.
wintergrasp is vastly different from any pvp zone seen pre-LK. the faction that won the previous game has control of the base/keep (which is huge, all things considered) and has to defend it, the other team attempts to bust down the walls and take over.
the *EASY* way to get in at lower levels -- wait for your faction to control wintergrasp. in the little room in dalaran containing the battlemasters, there will be a portal into the wintergrasp base. it's almost always available while you control the zone, though it seems to disappear at some point before the battle starts (sadly i didn't pay enough attention to how this worked, might be when the "one hour" shout goes out?). not sure what the min level is to take the portal (if there is one) but you can go through at 70.
a dalaran npc does a zone-wide announcement at various intervals when it's getting to be time to fight for wintergrasp, iirc it's at 1 hour, 30 mins, 15 mins and 5 mins. when it's really close to time, they'll announce that reinforcements are needed and shout that they've opened a portal (this is just for the faction in control of the base). i think i may've seen it disappear right as the battle was beginning... but i've also taken the portal into the zone while the battle was in progress... i really just don't remember. in retrospect i wish i'd taken the time to learn the triggers for the portal appearing/disappearing.
both teams can create various vehicles. you need a certain # of kills to request each rank of vehicle - 10 i believe. however, you do NOT need any rank to *use* them. *edit: seems like the first rank only takes 2... second still takes 10. this means the person with the highest rank can make and abandon high quality vehicles and folks with low/no ranks could then commandeer them. a "kill" can be an enemy player but can also be destroying one of the cannons on a turret of the base (which is nice, if no players show up on the defending side you'll still have a way to get the vehicles needed to destroy the walls).
the ranks are temporary, they are specific to wintergrasp and are erased when the battle ends. they persist through death.
the defending team can create vehicles inside the base. there are also two vehicle workshops outside the base in the main battlefield that can be used by whichever faction controls them. to capture a workshop you just stand there for a bit, the way you'd cap any base/tower that doesn't have a flag... they cap quite quickly even with just one person.
vehicles can be attacked and killed by a player on foot (ie not using a vehicle/cannon). they can NOT be healed and neither can cannons. rank 1 vehicles are pretty much defenseless against an attacker staying in melee range since you can't aim that close to the vehicle. in general, their aim tends to be a little off, making them mediocre at best for trying to hit moving players, however they're passable for taking down cannons. because of the vehicle limit, it's better to let your vehicle get killed and eject you than to hop out when it gets low and leave an "active" vehicle sitting on the battlefield.
if you pull up the map you can see the position of enemy vehicles that are approaching so you know what area to run to to man a cannon. there are "blind spots" esp around the corners that stick out where catapult vehicles can hit the cannons but those cannons can not aim downward enough to fire back. the only way to hit them with a cannon is go to one further down one of the walls... but the catapult can easily duck around the corner to escape you if there isn't someone on the other wall's cannon too. if possible, it'll be a lot faster/easier to jump down and kill the vehicle yourself (and then the player inside) before porting back into the base... depends on your level compared to theirs as well as if they have many stacks of the tenacity buff.
if you are low 70's you can still be very helpful against 80's if you know how to make good use of the mechanical tools, especially if you coordinate with others to eliminate the safe spots catapult drivers like to hide in. a group of 70-73's can defend against a group of 80's in many situations. strategy and an understanding of what's going on can *really* compensate for level differences and even for the other faction having the tenacity buff (which i'll explain below).
if your team is defending and you're outside the base, you can get back in by using teleporters located on the outside that are only usable by the defenders. i recommend care when using these, esp if trying to make a frantic escape... i didn't do any wintergrasp fighting after the last beta patch and one would *hope* the bug would be fixed before it went live if it wasn't fixed in that patch but with blizzard you never know... anyway, if you were moving when you clicked on a teleporter you would fall through the world and die. as long as you came to a *complete* stop before you clicked you would make it through safely.
edit: i was wrong about the tenacity buff being related to consecutive losses, guess my experiences on beta were too limited. apparently, it actually goes to the outnumbered team. the buff stacks and i don't think there's a limit to how high it can stack. each stack grants 25% to health, healing done and healing taken + 18% to damage done. i've seen lvl 80 players who would normally have 20-25k health running around with 50k and 1-shotting people left and right. normal pvp combat is futile under these circumstances, it becomes very important to stay inside the keep and use the turret cannons and vehicles to fight. vehicles driven by the faction with the tenacity buff will also benefit from the buff, which is the really bad part. not sure what determines the number of stacks but it is absolutely brutal when small groups are involved... was 8 vs 5 the other day and the horde (side w/5) had three stacks (so 75% to health/healing and 54% bonus to damage).
imo the tenacity buff isn't too bad when the attacking team has it since you can defend from inside the keep using the wall cannons and such... however, it was impossibly bad when the defending team had it, we couldn't even get close to the keep, much less actually attack the walls (which is a slow process if you don't have a HUGE group).

(continued)
map of wintergrasp
the north central area is where the base is. if you look at the square of roads around the middle of the zone, there are goblin workshops by the NE and NW corners of the roads.
there *are* some mobs in parts of the zone - lvl 80 elementals (water and earth i think) so be careful of those if you're lower level.
alliance flight point
horde flight point
these flight points always works, no matter which side controls the zone and still work while the zone is contested.
there are mineral and herb spawns same as any other zone.
if you're on a normal or RP server, you'll be perma-flagged the entire time you're in wintergrasp, whether a battle is in progress or not.
the entirety of wintergrasp is a "no fly" zone -- if you fly into it on a flying mount and don't land quickly enough you will be forceably dismounted. if you're quick/careful enough, though, you can fly up to the mountain ridge in the northwest from
sholazar basin
(maker's overlook area) and make a safe landing inside the base. this is particularly helpful if you're trying to destroy cannons for the kills to get a vehicle but have no significant ranged dps abilities (they're up above ground level and can't be reached by melee from the outside). you get marked with a debuff for flying in a no-fly zone, once it hits you have a few seconds to land/dismount before your mount poofs so make sure you're close enough to the ground to land safely. the npcs inside the base will attack on sight but for the most part i believe you can avoid them. they can be killed 1v1 by a highish lvl player and do not see through stealth.
there are dailies available inside the keep for the faction that controls it (dunno if there's another hub elsewhere for the attacking faction as alliance were in control all but one time that i was in there). at 78 the daily quest givers still had silver !s so you probably have to be 80 to get them.
the honor gains are glorious... dunno about the arena point rumor though -- i didn't hit 80 until 12 minutes before beta disappeared forever :(. the amount of honor/number of marks is based on participation in addition to whether you won or lost -- for example, if you show up halfway through the battle you'll earn a significant amount of end honor but not nearly as much as someone who was there from the start and may get 1-2 tokens instead of 3.
i was never able to find any use for wintergrasp marks of honor, i checked everywhere i could think of. either i missed it somehow or the use wasn't impemented on beta (or was implemented in a very very late patch after i'd already checked the zone).
the innermost room of the keep offers a portal back to dalaran, portals to join all the battlegrounds, the guy who hands out the pvp daily/lets you do the repeatable mark turn-in and the entrance to the lvl 80 raid instance for the faction that currently controls the base. min level to walk into the instance is 80.
whenever your faction controls the base (even when the zone is being contested), vendors will be available in the central area just outside of that inner room that sell things in exchange for wintergrasp shards.
i'm honestly quite surprised that NONE of this info is uploaded into the wowhead database by now (well, items are in here but they haven't been tied to the stone keeper's shards yet). luckily when i first explored wintergrasp 2-3 weeks ago, i had the foresight to take screen shots of all the stuff at the vendors.

For those of you who will be stepping into Wintergrasp for the first time I'll give you a small slice of my experience last night with the ranking system.
When I first zoned in there was about 5 minutes left until the battle would begin. I decided to start carefully exploring the zone in kitty form (feral Tauren druid) and stumbled across a little skirmish at one of the birdges. There were two lvl 76 elite aliance npcs attacking two horde npcs just at the foot of the bridge so I decided to mosey on over and help out.
All I did was sit behind the alliance guard and help my fellow horde mate burn him down, and then we jumped over to help his friend.
This did not grant a rank up!
Ranks are only gained after a battle has oficially been initiated. My kill did seem to start counting up, and after finding a couple more guards (sorry I didn't keep count) I gained a nice little buff that increased my rep and honor from killing enemies on the field.
Once the battle did start killing guards by the brigdes did serve to rank me up high enough to start flinging the plague canisters at the alliance (catapult), so I would strongly recommend that the first thing you do once you zone into a battle is find some guards to kill instead of hunting down enemy players. The players will take time to make it to your end of the map, and the bonus is that when you do find a player to kill you'll be riding a war machine rather than facing them one-on-one.
Rinse and repeat for the Siege vehicles and other ranks. Once your team needs use of these vehicles just go and find more guards to hit. They've got a very quick respawn rate and killing 10 of them will take no time at all.
New Information
So I've done the whole Wintergrasp thing a little bit now and had a real blasty while doing it! Here's some of the things that I'd like to add in to this initial post before posting a strategy session:
Rank 1 takes 1 kills and allows you to use light machinery (catapults) do not operate while under the effects of Tylenol?
Rank 2 takes 5 kills and allows you to start using the tanks (this rank may be where planes open up but as I'm not a lvl 77 with cold weather flying yet I can't confirm this)
Rank 3 takes 10 kills and allows you to........I wish I knew. If planes are not available at rank 2 then I would assume Rank 3 is the pilot's license. I won't be able to accurately coment on this until I have learned cold weather flying >_<
....and that's about as far as I've managed to get. I end up being the driver on the large siege tanks while other people jump in on the middle turret and blast away. Anyone else who drives while I gun manages to get the tank stuck on a rise >_<.
My strat will include my success and failures in this zone with attack plans that worked well, moderately well, or failed miserably, as well as an entertaining look at the first time that I found the relic.......and phailed.
edit: I had the wrong numbers for ranks, but those have been fixed now.

The battle occurs every 2.5 hours and lasts for thirty minutes. You can be ported from your respective Dalaran Wintergrasp battlemaster five minutes before the battle begins.
I also discovered a flightpath so that you can fly there as opposed to taking the port in Dalaran.

Wintergrasp is an awesome PvP zone, and, although it lists 77-80 as the levels to go in there, as a 70, I could contribute. (This may change as more hi-level players discover it.) Some play tips:
1) You need 2 kills to get the rank of Corporal, which lasts one hour and enables you to build the light catapult vehicle (which you do by asking the engineer working in any shop you control). The catapult vehicle is good for AoE damage by plague barrel, and flamethrower damage through crowds, and in a pinch, you can take down a wall with it (but it takes a LONG time -- park against the wall, aim as low as you can, and lob about 20 plague barrels, one by one).
2) I believe it's 10 kills (I lost count in all the excitement) for Lieutenant rank, which enables you to drive all ground vehicles. (The demolisher, which you can make at this rank, is like the WoW Hummer, but VERY slow.)
3) As a 70 rogue, I was able to get the necessary kills by helping the Valiance warriors take on the Warsong warriors on the bridges. That's where skirmishes take place, and I just jumped into the battle. As long as I was doing a fair amount of damage, I got credit for the kill, so even a patient 70 can help take out a 76 elite and get the necessary kills to get ranks. (Of course, as more players discover the zone, the likelihood of getting ganked while doing this increases!)
4) Cap workshops controlled by the other side in the same way you cap bases in EoS. Once you cap it, you can build vehicles there.
5) This is a fairly obvious point, but sometimes those are overlooked. A player on foot can do damage to the other side's vehicles simply by attacking it. (Just like Strand of the Ancients.)
6) Look for Rocket Propelled Grenades at the workshops. They're not at every one, but they're fairly obvious when they're there (to the left of the garage as you're looking at it). You can only carry five at a time, and you lose them when you die. But they do decent damage, although the range is short, and it takes a LONG time to fire.
Have fun! I love this place!

During a battle, i was receiving 1k XP from the flagged NPCs that guard the bridges.
So as long as your on their threat list, you should receive some XP for the kill, and they also count towards the total needed to advance your rank while the battle is engaged.
You can also grind XP while in a vehicle. This works on the elementals surrounding the zone too.

Last night on Moonglade I was able to successfully direct our horde assault of the keep. We breached the first wall in about ten minutes (not bad for a bunch of starters), and were through the second wall with 8 minutes remaining. By the time we pounded through the door and got to the relic we had about 2.5 minutes on the clock, and then......................
How do you click the relic?
Alright for those of you planning to make a successful attack we noted that there is a 10 second "use" timer on right-clicking the relic. This is interuptable so I suggest that a priest or paladin bubbles and then uses it, otherwise you'll have to take the time to clear the entire room fo players and enemy npcs, plus form a defensive line.
Best of luck to all of you. I'll follow this up with my own little strategy write-up later tonight.

For easier acess to Wintergrasp when the portal isn't working or you aren't defending, there are flightpoints in the zone. Horde is east of the keep, Alliance is west. Both are about parallel to the lower part of the keep and far off the buildings.
Also note that your rank appears to determine at least partly how many marks you get then the battle is over. Rank 1 gives two marks, Rank 2 gives three. There aren't any rewards yet for them, though.

And the flight masters are:
Herzo Safeflight <Flight Master> (Horde)
(21, 34)
Arzo Safeflight <Flight Master> (Alliance)
(72, 31)

Just took the zone for my faction today. Ironically it seems the LESS people you have the better you do. It was just me and a friend. I was a 78 warlock and he was a 73 mage.
The first thing we did is rush to the Vehicle shop to defend it from the Horde. However because we were the only ones in the zone and so greatly outnumber we gained a buff which increased health, health regen, and damage by about 500%! That meant we pretty much one shot the 4-5 horde there.
We then immediately picked up two siege weapons. These normally do about 3000 damage to enemy players. With out buff it one shot nearly everyone. Two shot everyone else. With our insanely high health we essentially walked in. They just couldn't kill us fast enough. The only tricky part was claiming the orb in the center. Eventually my friend just sat in the doorway and knocked back anyone trying to get in with ram while I capped.
Anyway if you have a low pop server and it is time for battle don't call in the Calvary. The buff will easily make up for lack of numbers.

Is anybody else having a problem with the portal not being open before the battle starts? It's been happening consistently for the last couple of days, and there was a post about it on the European forums with a blue saying it was a known problem.

Strange, I had the rank 2 buff, and since the battle bugged (we destroyed the stone, yet we did not win) I left, and after about 10 minutes (about the time the battle would end) I got 1000 honor out of no where O.o

Well, here's a hint to all who think sneaking in the side by blasting a wall instead of going through the gates, you might not wanna do that. Just had a Wintergrasp where we did exactly that, we had lost quite a few beforehand, so we had many resources, we rode our mounts up, got a few kills, got a rank, got a tank, went up side blasted them a new one, blasted another one, and there are the inner sanctum gates, without the first two destroyed, well, we destroyed the inner sanctum, and didn't cap...WTF. Have a ticket open atm, if anyone else has an issue like this, let me know please.

This is only as fun as the server allow. Take my server for instance, 94 % horde. Sucks, but it would suck even more if I were alliance.
Good thing though is that I've earned about 200 stonekeeper's marks in just three days.

I'm back to talk about that strat that I was promising. Now that I've been running this for about a week I think I can comment on some of the typical situations that you might run into, and how best to deal with them.
Attacking
First off, and in my opinion the most important: Form a raid.
This does not operate on a /battleground chat system, and though you can easily use general I've found that raid warnings really help when the battle get's going. Everyone will see when walls falls and what-have-you, but to best direct the overall battle it's good to have one or two experienced players using raid warnings to infrom everyone about incoming waves, attack directions, and other fun tips.
As for the strategy itself Your best bet is to hit one wall and hit it hard. Don't go doing anything fancy by splitting forces for a pincer maneuver, or playing general bloodgut and yelling at everyone else on the battlefield. Keep it simple and you'll find yourselves most effective.
In hitting the wall you'll want to make note of the following:
Are people simply running at the wall and poking it with their sword? If so recommend that they go and kill an npc guard, get rank 1 and jump in a catapult at the very least; otherwise they're cannon fodder.
The walls are broken up into specific sections, I've seen many battles where people are vigorously attacking, but they're hitting a corner tower as opposed to a wall section (which would make for a better breach), and due to this your breach time through the first ring is much slower. Make sure that everyone is attacking the same wall section, otherwise you will most likely run into a lot more frustration than you intended.
As for attacking the wall itself once people have hit Rank 2 make sure that they're making good use of the tanks. Don't send your troops up one at a time, rather take the three minutes it may take to gather 5 tanks at your shop and then charge the wall. Have two tanks hang back to provide cover fire for the 3 that are moving in to "melee" attack the wall, with the two hanging back concetrating on killing off the turrets and/or incoming vehicles.
One mistake that I made my first time around was hopping into a siege tank and not realizing where the gun was >_< There are three vehicles that I've seen so far. The Catapult, the "Devestator", and the Siege tank. Once you hop into a vehicle a little "doll" will appear on the right hand side of the screen. This will display a small top-down view of your vehicle with different "nodes" on it. These are where people can sit, and by clicking on a node you can swap positions (if it's unoccupied). For both the catapult and the tank the gunning positions are accessible from the driver's seat (if you're driving, you're shooting things). For the siege tank things are different. If you're driving then you can use the melee attack, 2000 "siege" damage to buildings, plus pushback and damage on both players and their vehicles. YOU CANNOT SHOOT FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT. You need to do one of two things: a) recruit a team mate to shoot the cannon (middle node) and go wreck havok. b) park your tank in a strategic position, jump into the gunner seat, and rain death upon your enemies.
Now that we've covered vehicles and the first wall, let's get to where things go down hill incredibly fast when you're trying to coordinate everyone.

So here's where people find themselves starting to do their own thing. I don't know what possess' players to think that "hey we're through the first ring, so I'm going to go and knock on the front door......of the first ring, and get myself blown to bits by the defenders who happen to be sitting in the turrets lawlzing at each other."
As soon as you get through the first ring press through with the breaching vehicles (the people who did the dmg) and do your worst on the second ring.
Onec they've died, which they almost always will, regroup back at the shop for a coordinated second strike. This should consist of tanks and siege engines, with anyone who's jumping into the battle halfway through mounting catapults to guard the engines.
The tanks themselves (Devestators) are slow moving with two attacks. They're nice for taking out walls but best used against other tanks and siege engines. The catapults are the quickest of your vehicles and excel at picking off runners (unmounted players) as well as, from my experience, make excellent defenders for the large sloth like siege engines. Due to the fact that you've got enough speed to stay out of range of the tanks melee attacks, plus you can stay just inside the range of their distance shot, all you need to do is pepper them fire fire blasts and canisters. This allows your siege engines to concetrate on what matters.....the walls.
You will also want to pick off turrets with the catapults and tanks. These do not respawn (unlike vehicles which will continue to respawn once you control a machine shop), and will severly deter your defenders efforts.
The second ring should typically be breached thrugh the front gate, and onwards to the third ring. The main difference that I have experienced in the court is a lack of coordination on the attack. If people are chasing elementals on the battlefield you're going to find yourself severly disadvantaged. Reinforcements from your machine shop will come at a snails pace due to the movement speed of the heavier guns, which is what you're going to want for both courtyards. If people are heading up one-by-one, then you can expect them to get picked off one-by-one.
Once you're in the courtyard the defenders have a nice advantage of having the machine shops very close at hand, and will always have a steady flow of machines to hinder you.
That said you're not without options:
a) capture the inner machine shops, which will require further wall breaching and what have you.
b) send someone to stealthily, but effectively assassinate the machine shop goblin. With the goblin dead you can be sure that no more machines will come out of that shop, and will really impact the defenders ability to do their part.
That's about all that I would want to really say. I know that lots of people are going to go about this in a hundred and one different ways, but for those of you just zoning in for the first time I hope that this will help you to establish your role in the battle while attacking, and once I've gone through a couple more defensive battles I'll have something similar up for that.
Please note
: If you're attacking an have not read any of my prior posts here be aware that there is a 10 second "use" timer on the relic. Once you're through the third ring and into the chamber have either a priest, pally, or druid use bubble/barkskin to activate the relic. This will allow you to escape getting interupted by mass AoEs that smart defenders will let rip in order to frustrate the living hell out of you. Your only other option is to clear the entire chamber of enemies which includes several higher level elite npcs.

this place is really fun, i love the new thing how you can get on tanks and use catapults, quite the adventure. it also gives insane amounts of honor, people are telling me 3000 for losing and 6000 for winning, i was there for 4 minutes and got 800, so you decide if you think its good enough honor or not.

Ok so maybe I missed something but I've just read all of these comments and I hit a snag this evening that isn't covered here.
I went through the Dalaran portal with 27 minutes on the clock. My first stop was the Eastspark machine shop. I killed all of the surrounding guards but when I went in, I expected a bar to pop up showing that it was currently controlled by the Horde (like the tower bars in EotS). No such bar ever appeared. I also tried to kill the goblin mechanic but got Invalid Target errors.
By now all the guards had respawned so I killed them again and waited inside the shop for another few minutes. All together I spent 15 minutes in the machine shop or around it killing guards and didn't gain control of it.
At that point I said to heck with it, went up to the one machine shop controlled by the Alliance, hopped into a catapult and started chasing Horde tanks. We won the battle and I got my honor points, but I don't understand what I did wrong in Eastspark. Any suggestions?

Out of curiosity, I attempted to bring a level 5 bank alt into the zone, just to see if it was possible.
Not only was it possible, but after joining the raid there, I did in fact gain rank and was able to build / pilot / operate vehicles -- this prevented me from being a pointless bump on the landscape.
Since cannons and vehicles take damage instead of your character, players of any level can actually participate and be useful. While a level 5 bank alt is beyond ludicrous, I would not at all begrudge anyone popping in for a bit of PvP fun so long as they're putting in some effort to contribute.

Wrong.
You can
fly out
of Wintergrasp using your respective faction's flight master ( Alliance to the northeastern edge of the zone, Horde to the northwest ) but you
cannot
fly into
Wintergrasp from another flight master.
No choice but to get there using your flying mount or the Dalaran portal.
Or by breaking your neck falling off from a really high cliff on the edges of Icecrown.

I have now played both offense and defense of this map many times. Each time the defending team has had players outside the keep attempting to stop the opponent from reaching the keep. The team on offense is able to kill some of them granting them access to siege engines.
If all defending players were to remain in the keep
manning guns or even just huddling in the middle wouldn't it be next to
impossible for the team on offense to get access to siege engines
? Since they would have no one to kill they would not get the access and thus the
defending team should be able to win every time
.
Does anyone see a flaw with my logic?

It is ESSENTIAL to capture the enemy's vehicle workshops if you are on defense, because this lowers the total number of vehicles available to the siege. Destroying the southern workshops doesn't seem to make any difference, but capturing the northern ones reduces the enemy's maximum number of siege vehicles by 4 each. It is easy to repel the siege with an 8-vehicle maximum. It is downright impossible to repel it if they have 16 vehicles, because siege engines can simply brute-force their way through the walls if the enemy is attacking with any sort of coordination.
Hunkering down inside Wintergrasp Fortress and manning the turrets is a great way to LOSE LWG every time you're on defense. I don't think the majority of players have caught on to this yet.

Destroying the southern workshops doesn't seem to make any difference
I have to disagree with this portion of your statement (although I pretty much agree with the rest). Once the defenders have control of the East and West workshops, the best strategy I have seen is to start sending siege vehicles south to destroy the Eastpark and Westpark workshops, while keeping enough defenders in place to hold the other workshops. The Eastpark and Westpark workshops, once destroyed, can not be rebuild. If the defenders are able to destroy those, and hold the others, the attackers have no where to build ANY vehicles, and a 0-vehicle siege is considerably easier to repel that an 8-vehicle siege (it pretty much consists of farming honor at the attackers southern graveyards with catapults).

Once the final door is breached, all players on offense should be building catapults only. Drive four or five cats into the relic room, spam plague barrels and flamethrowers, and you will kill all the defenders there very quickly.
Catapults are the antipersonnel vehicles.
stillnotking is absolutely right. Simply breaking down the defenses is not enough to win, you actually have to gain enough control of the relic room to channel the relic. This represents the last line of defense for the defenders, and the final push to victory for the attackers.

I tried to summarize this... but it will need 2 posts I think :(
Introduction
Wintergrasp is always in control by either the Horde or the Alliance. There is a battle approximately every 2 hours 30 minutes (after the conclusion of the last battle). In this time Wintergrasp is contested, and players from both the Horde and the Alliance can portal in to begin the fight, which plays much like a Battleground. One faction will be defending (the previous victor), while the other attacks.
The attacking side has to lay seige to Wintergrasp Keep, with the ultimate goal of entering the control room (to the North in the center) and clicking on the giant globe before the 30 minute timer runs out. To do so, they will have to capture the workshops (both are not necessary, but make it much easier), destroy the doors with siege vehicles, and fight their way into the Wintergrasp Keep control room, all the while the Defenders want nothing more than to stop them.
The defending faction has to defend the fortress for 30 minutes. This means that a battle can take as few as >10 minutes (as per the
Within Our Grasp
achievement), and as many as 30. A PvP symbol is shown over the zone if there is currently a battle taking place.
Getting There
A portal was mentioned above, and although it is the primary way to enter the zone, you can also fly in. In fact, Wintergrasp doubles as a PvE area in some sense, aside from its obvious World BG PvP functions. Note that the air above Wintergrasp is a 'No fly zone' so you will get dismounted once you get inside.
You do not have to be in control of Wintergrasp to be able to fly into the area
, but you will not be able to get into the Wintergrasp Keep (which contains the Battlemaster, portals, and raid).
The portal should be fully explained as well; it opens in Dalaran right as a battle begins, and remains open for the duration of the battle. The portal closes for the losing faction but stays there, fully functional, for the winning side.
You can get away from Wintergrasp by talking to the flight master by the Attackers starting area. It is also possible to find areas on the edge of the zone that count as other zones (as in, there are areas right up to the mountains which count as neighboring zones, allowing you to summon your flying mount).
PvE
In terms of PvE, Wintergrasp is home to a large number of Elementals and even some unique (found only in Wintergrasp) mining nodes. As of patch 3.03, there are Elementals of all types (shadow, earth, fire, life, air, water), and the faction that is in control of the Keep can also see Revenants which have twice the health of the Elementals, but drop crystallized elements (all of them except for Crystallized Life) 100% of the time.
When a faction controls Wintergrasp Keep, all members of that faction will get
Stone Keeper's Shards
on each and every Northrend boss kill (Instances / Raids).
Grouping
Whether your side is defending or attacking Wintergrasp, raid groups are usually formed much before (or only slightly before, as they fall apart and reform frequently) the battle begins. These are started by whoever (Guilds or groups of players may get together and make their own raid/party group), and are usually joined by simply saying "invite to raid" in the Wintergrasp / Dalaran (right before the portal opens) chat. There may be multiple raids, although there is almost always a primary one (this depends on the server population / trends).
Defending
Defenders need to both defend the outer walls, and attempt to capture one of the Workshops (or both, ideally). Focus on the Siege vehicles and try to push the Attackers back as much as possible. This plays out similar to Alterac Valley, where half of your team is defending while the other half is attacking and harassing.
Make use of the Wall / Tower guns to attack the other faction, these are generally underutilized and can greatly aid your team in the battle. Protect nearby allied guns with crossfire, and encourage players on your side to use them as much as possible (their range limits may make them, in some cases, useless).
If the attackers breach the walls to the Inner Keep, you are forced to turtle and, hopefully, push them back. It is possible to ninja Workshops while in this position as a Defender, but it is not recommended unless a very favorable opportunity were to arise. Defend the control room and, most importantly, interrupt anyone on the Attacking side who tries to click the globe and end the battle. Pretend its Stormpike Graveyard (from Alterac Valley for those who might not get the reference) after the Horde have pushed your defense across the bridge into your main area; do not let anyone complete the casting time. Area of Effects spells are vital, as are any other methods that may sow fear and confusion into the enemy ranks. If the battle reaches this stage, hang on as long as possible, who knows, you may yet prevail.
Attacking
The first thing to do as an attacker is gain the rank of Corporal. Do this by attacking two guards or a varying amount (the current consensus is that it takes 1 player kill) of enemy Players. Once at this rank, you can create and drive a catapult. These have an attack against ground units, and an attack against walls / workshops / towers. Since the walls need to be taken down, and it takes 10-15 hits to damage them, it is best to only focus on dismounted enemy players with your attacks so as to not waste valuable wall-smashing time. The RP-GG is another tool that you can use to besiege the Defenders, targeting out their vehicles at range.
Once you get 10 kills (rank Liutenant), you are granted the ability to create siege vehicles (at Workshops), which are extremely effective at destroying enemies of all forums. A common tactic at the moment is to level up to Liutenant as quickly as possible, then make siege vehicles for other players and leave them unattended by the Workshops. There is a maximum of 16 Siege vehicles on the map, so this becomes much less viable after the majority of players attain the rank.
In terms of strategy and tactics, the attacking force needs to first take command of the two neutral Workshops outside of the Keep. One capture should be quite easy, although the second one may cause problems. A good suggestion is to take one Workshop and then split your forces into one group attacking the wall, distracting the Defenders, while the other group lays siege to the other Workshop (if the Defenders have taken it, which they will have in the situation described). Once you get inside the courtyard from the Outer walls, it is a good idea to take down the Defenders Workshops to further hinder them in their plans. In the end, though, a successful attacking team is an aggressive one; you are working against the clock with a sole objective: take the control room inside the Wintergrasp Keep by any means necessary.

Continued...
Vehicles, Towers, & Weapons
Workshops
There are a total of six Goblin Workshops in the zone. These Workshops allow your side to create Siege Vehicles, and are thus extremely important. Two are controlled (this is when a battle is taking place) by the Defenders, two by the Attackers, and two are neutral and capturable. The Defenders and the Attackers Workshops can be destroyed with siege vehicles, and do not respawn. The two neutral Workshops (located in the middle of the map, right where the Attackers and Defenders should first clash) are taken over in the same way the towers in the Eye of the Storm are; the faction with more players in the vicinity will be granted the Workshop (or tower, in the case of the Eye of the Storm). These give whichever faction holds them more vehicles and a more strategic launching point for their advances, allowing them (both players and vehicles) to spawn closer to the frontlines. The faction on the Attack has the option to destroy these Workshops (in the same method as the other four), but the Defenders do not (even if the Attackers have control of it).
Towers
There are four towers on the corners of the Wintergrasp Keep (belonging to the defenders), and three to the south of the map (belonging to the attackers). The towers serve the purpose of defense through their turrets, which can be devestating, especially to Siege Vehicles. Luckily, for the sieging faction, these can also be destroyed, although they will eventually respawn. Bonus honor is given to the defenders for each attacker tower destroyed.
Vehicles
Vehicles serve the purpose of assailing enemy players and vehicles, while destroying walls and turrets. They can be attacked by players, but have high amounts of health and armor. It is possible to ride as a passenger in these, with the option to attack with ranged attacks while doing so (except for the driver, of course, who controls the vehicles movement and attack). These can be aquired by talking to an NPC inside Workshops controlled by your faction (you must be of rank Corporal).
Weapons
RP-GG's
can be found around the non-neutral Workshops. These can be fired at enemy vehicles, with 5,000 damage per hit, a 5 second cast time, and a 150 yard range.
Engineers can make Saronite Bombs (Goblin Engineers can also make Global Thermal Sapper Charge's) which can damage vehicles, towers, and walls.
Once your Faction wins
After your faction, be it Horde or Alliance, gains control of Wintergrasp for the 2 to two and a half hour time period, you will be able to take advantage of the many benefits granted:
A Battlemaster
Portals to all of the BG's as well as Dalaran (the Dalaran portal to Wintergrasp will stay open for the duration you control Wintergrasp
A PvE Raid boss, available in 10 man and 25 man modes, which drops a good assortment of gear and is not at all difficult to overtake.
And, as was mentioned above, you gain Revenants to farm for Crystallized Elementals, as well as shards which drop from all Northrend Instance and Raid bosses while you control Wintergrasp (the currency used by Wintergrasp Vendors. Allows the purchase of many recipes and gems, a couple epics, as well as all new 'Bind on Account' items, which you can transfer from character to character (that is on the same account)).
The PvE Fight with Archavon is pretty easy (very PuG'able, some would say), and from it you can get Season 5 Epic PvP Gear. The fight is, through and through, a dps race. The only thing that groups really struggle with is the tank switch. Periodically, Archavon will take one of the tanks and pick him up with his hands. One of your off-tanks HAS to taunt / distract him immediately. Other then that, spread out because of rock spikes AoE damage (which hit random players and an AoE around them) and do not stand in the gas clouds (although its not hard to heal through them). Beat the enrage timer and you get your free (well, some would argue well-earned) epics.
Tenacity and Balance
The problems of Server inbalance has been recognized by Blizzard from the start, and a rather interesting solution is used in Wintergrasp. When a team is - significantly - outnumbered, each player on the team will be given a 'Tenacity' buff. This buff can stack up to twenty times, each stack offering an additional:
Health increased by 25%.
Healing taken increased by 25%.
Health regen increased by 25%.
Damage dealt increased by 18%.
This buff also applies to vehicles. Should you find yourself fighting those with great tenacity, do not be alarmed. With your greater numbers you also have greater cc abilities, and those with tenacity may find themselves quickly stunned & locked down. On the flip side of that situation, it is a good idea for ranged players with tenacity to sit back and 'snipe' as much as possible, or else (with melee especially) group up with a couple other similarily buffed players and storm the other team with an organized and concentrated front, so as to take down as many players (possible cc'ers) asap.
Achievements
There are a total of 20 achievements that can be earned through Wintergrasp. See this WoWHead page for an easy to read compilation:

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to cause collateral damage? Like, say your on defense and an enemy vehicle is trying to break the door. If they're right near the door, and you have a vehicle, will firing at them hurt them and the door you're trying to defend? Or are the doors/walls considered your "allies" and even if you fire at them, they won't be damaged?

If you like going on the defensive guns inside the fortress here are a few simple and obvious tips to help your fellow defenders:
1. Turrets on the "inner ring" can fire over and above the "outer ring" walls. You can still inflict damage whilst in the inner ring, so don't wait for a wall to come down before starting to shoot.
2. You cannot damage your own side/walls - so don't be afraid to let rip.
3. Focus on enemy tanks first, rather than groups of players (sounds simple, but I've seen gunners make that mistake plenty of times)
4. Inner and outer ring guns can rotate 360.. so even if there's a battle "behind" you, rotate your gun and shoot through the gap.
5. If attacked while gunning from the steps/gap, rotate your gun and fire at point blank - not always necessary as another player sometimes stands watch.
6. Take a moment to aim. If your shot lands well (ie, the dot in the centre of the crosshair is where they are) you'll inflict more damage than the outer area of the crosshair.
7. Try and pre-empt where the enemy is heading. Your shell takes a few moments to land and impact, so don't fire "on" them if they are moving, fire where they "will be" (also refer to point 6 here)
8. If there's no point being on a gun (ie, the wall behind is down and you can't hit anything) get off, and get DPS'ing.
9. From the inner ring, you can also fire through the "gap" of the outer ring guns ahead of you to give them supporting fire. Again, don't worry, you can't hit your own side.
10. Trajectory is your friend (accounting for shell plummeting time) XD
Guns and vehicles are fun, but don't get bound to them and don't sit there idol whilst a fight is going on that you could be helping in.
Enjoy WG! It's by far the best PvP imo.

Nobody wrote this so far but, I'm pretty sure that during 3.0.8. or 3.0.9. a new feature was added to Wintergrasp, the 3 southern towers now give a stacking buff of 5% dmg to those who control them and a quest was added to destroy these towers.
I didn't see the buff or the towers before 3.0.8.

I don't know about you, but this is worst thing ever created. HORRIBLE lag once you get to the keep, amazingly incredible stupid imbalance when it comes to horde ratio when we play. We have gotten tenacity x20, and i'm sorry, but that just doesn't work. I could have 50k health, but when it's 20 horde on me...i'm still pretty much screwed. Epic failure IMO. Aside from that, it is very fun ;) Lots of honor too.

just played a battle then, horde seemed to start out at rank 3 as within a min of starting they had around 11 demolishers and siege engines racing towards our walls and even the PvP geard and specked werent an equal match for them, so it would seem to be the balancing buffs in action as ally have been in controll for almost a day now ( on one of the few servers where horde outrank ally something like 63% horde ) this seemed an overbalance to give the horde controll as they were unstopable and won within mins of the battle starting, just wonderd if anyone else had experianced this
Thanks :)

Wintergrasp is a large region located between Sholazar Basin, Borean Tundra, Dragonblight, and Icecrown.
Wintergrasp appears in the second World of Warcraft expansion as the first non-battleground zone fully dedicated to world PvP, even on PvE servers. It focuses on siege weapon warfare.
History
----------
Wintergrasp was once the location of a vast lake known as Lake Wintergrasp; the lake has shrunk since then, leaving the basin open to exploration. Wintergrasp contains a valuable mine, ownership of which is contested by the Horde and the Alliance in order to reap its riches.
Geography
---------------
The Wintergrasp zone in World of Warcraft is about the size of Westfall. Wintergrasp can be reached via portals from Dalaran, one portal for each side, which open while the zone is controlled; the portals are shut down while the match is in progress. It can also be reached on foot, details of which can be found here.
Players can fly into Wintergrasp under their own power, but in Wintergrasp the air is too thin to sustain flight; players entering this no-fly zone are warned and failure to leave within 8 seconds will result in the player being kicked off of their mount. Players who are kicked from their mount are automatically given a "parachute" effect (similar to Slow Fall).
Players can fly out of Wintergrasp to other regions via the flight master near the attackers' rally point. The Horde rally point is on the west side beyond the western goblin workshop, and the Alliance rally point is north-east of the eastern goblin workshop. They can also leave Wintergrasp by moving to one of the various locations that are technically within other zones (but remain on the plateau) then summoning a flying mount.

WG was(and is)a very good idea that unfortunately needs some balance. As WoTLK is out 1.5 months i succesfully defended Wg 2! times only(and i tell you i a real WG junkey). It is simply too easy for an attacker to take the castle.
move 1:all go kill 1 player/npc and take 1rst rank.
move 2:16 catapelts for the attackers
move 3:spam plague barrel for 1-2 minutes(in the best case 5-6 if the defenders are really good)
Now,it is truth that if the defenders destroy the towers it becomes easier BUT the distance is so big that until the vecicles reach the towers the 1rst gate is always down and possibly the 2nd.What happens is(in best case senario)the defenders will pwn all attacking vecicles with them throwing 1-2 hits at the door.Unfortunately that happens usually for 10-15 minutes and then the door breaks(as it has no regeneration except when a loooong time passes)and all attackers come together mounted so at least 1-2 reach relic and press the WEWIN button and GG.
best thing you can do(defenders)is if you have a really good amount of players is charge at the attackers and don't stay inside the fortress which works more as an jail and it is not helpfull.Try tack both workshops and pwn towers as fast as you can. That's the only way unfortunately

Update to the above, very outdated, post. There are 3 ranks in WG:
Rank 0 (the icon is an axe with numbers in the lower left corner)
Rank 1
Corporal
Requires 10 HK's
Enables you to build
Catapults
Rank 2
1st Lieutenant
Requires a total of 20 HK's
Enables you to build
Demolishers
Enables you to build
Siege Engines
Ranks are gained by:
Getting Honorable Kills (i.e. helping someone to kill something/someone) = +1 rank points (10 for Rank 20 for rank 2)
Destroying
Siege Turrets
or siege vehicles. = +1 rank point
Killing enemy players = +1 rank points (if I am correct)
============
Catapults
:
A fast, weak vehicle (+100% speed I believe) which can do a ranged attack, Plague Barrel, which does minimal Siege damage (500?) and places an AoE on the ground where it hits. It can also do a channeled cone-shaped DoT fire spell.
Catapults are very effective against groups of players but less effective against walls, towers and cannons. They are also useful on defense; because of their mobility. An effective use of these, that I have seen, is to quickly deploy a few catapults to the southern towers and drive around them while firing Plague Barrels. This will take down a tower slower than a demolisher but leaves the vehicles less vulnerable to attack as they can line-of-sight ranged classes and outrun melee.
Demolishers
A somewhat slower (Run-speed) moderately armored vehicle. Demolishers can do a ranged fireball attack which does AoE damage and moderate Siege damage(1500). It also has a frontal, multiple target melee attack which does high Siege damage (2000) and has push-back effect. The two attacks can be used at the "same time" as the melee attack has a much lower CD than the ranged, this is very effective against walls.
There are also two seats where other players can sit and cast spells as if they were standing still. They will take no damage if the vehicle is damaged.
This vehicle is popular for both offense and defense as it is effective against both players and walls and can attack both at range, thus not being as vulnerable to AoE attacks as Siege Engines but still being tougher and more effective to walls than Catapults. It's moderate speed leaves it vulnerable to especially ranged attackers.
Siege Engines
This is a slow (less than run-speed) sturdy vehicle which does massive Siege damage (3000) with a frontal, multiple target attack which has a push-back effect on both players and vehicles. Siege Engines can also house 3 players besides the driver, one of which can fire a Turret.
This vehicle is very tough, though it's low mobility mainly renders it useful as a battering ram for attacking the fortress. It is also quite vulnerable due to it's low speed and melee-only attacks without passengers. To make this weapon effective it will need support from passengers as well as Demolishers or Catapults.

Only characters above level 70 may use the portal in Dalaran to enter Wintergrasp (but lvl 1s may still be warlock summoned, not sure what the VoA stone lvl is)
Only characters above level 50 will contribute to Tenacity (i dont know if this means that you need to be level 50 to get tenacity as on my server alliance never has it, but it means if you have X lvl 49s and nothing above 49 on alliance and <X lvl 80s on horde, the horde will not have tenacity stacks)
And as of 3.1, Wintergrasp Commendations are once again buyable for 30 Stone Keepers Shards as well as 9 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor

We found a NEW tactic about winning this easy-After ur raid is full a lock and 2 more go behind the wintergrasp(IN ICECROWN ZONE) and summon, when you are there w8 the battle to begin(dont go before it begins becouse if u are in wintergrasp before its started u will be teleported in front of the gates)and when the battle have begun all use ur flying mounts and start flying down there for the 9 secs u have before dismount. When you are there kill as many allyes/hordes as possible for 2 reasons:
1st-becouse when u die u will be able to purchase all the vehicles
and 2nd-becouse u will keep allyes/hordes back and most will be on their spirit healer. GL and have fun

The other side (considering your talking about the Defense side) gets Seige Engines fast because the Offense people just stand there by the keep and get blown up by the turrets and everyone near that area gets an honorable kill. Offense on the other hand, you go and kill the Alliance or Horde guards fighting on the bridges and middle areas and they count toward your kills.
Where are the planes that they promised? They put a picture of it on the back of the box for crying out loud! >_<

You used to be able to leave wintergrasp via the 'leave wintergrasp' accessed around your minimap, without consuming your hearthstone but although you can still leave this way, the hearthstone cd is now consumed.
It always tickled me to see people using hearthstone, taking flightpath, travelling to the boundary and flying, going all the way to the keep (if you controlled but didnt need to hand in quests) to use the portal or making/requesting portals when the easiest way was to click the above mentioned method taking you to the (99.9% of cases) home set location of Dalaran.

Lately, if the Horde are losing on offense on my server (Rexxar), they get their ranks up to lieutenant and then logout, thus keeping their rank. That way, when they relog for the next Wintergrasp, they have their rank and can immediately create vehicles right at the beginning of the next Wintergrasp battle. IMO, rank should disappear 15 minutes after logout to avoid exploits like this.
One other thing about this battleground: The Horde almost always assaults WG from the west, since it is closer to their starting point. The Alliance almost always assaults from the east, for the same reason. Something to do with shortest distance, two points, yadda yadda yadda.

For both battles, you should start recruiting at least 15 minutes before the raid. I reccomend downloading the addon WinterTime - it provides a (usually) accurate timer for Wintergrasp which is available without opening a map and being in Northrend. It also tracks your honorable kills, honor gained, and allows you to auto-invite people to the raid.
Wintergrasp - Offense
Preparation
In many cases, the outcome of an offense battle depends on what the offense does BEFORE the battle.
First of all, everyone, EVERYONE in your raid should get to Wintergrasp before it starts. Have a warlock set up a summon point at Sunken Ring (if Horde) or Broken Ring (if Alliance). If there are people waiting for the portal, tell them to fly there. If they refuse, kick them.
This is a vital part of the raid. For me, people waiting for the portal has ruined many Wintergrasp offensive battles
.
Second, send 3-4 caster classes up to the northeast (if Horde) or northwest (if Alliance) wall to take out wall turrets as soon as they spawn. Have them sweep from north to south as soon as the battle starts.
Thirdly, have at least 2 people at each southern workshop (it depends on how smart the defending team is. If there are a larger amount of people at the southern workshops, find out beforehand and send forces accordingly). If you lose the bottom two workshops, there is a
very good chance you will lose the battle
.
Send a few to the workshop that you do not have a large amount at. The reccomended distribution of forces is:
- 5% at both Eastspark and Westpark (adjust according to resistance present)
- 5% on Tower Defense
- 20% at Broken Ring (if you are Horde) or Sunken Ring (if you are Alliance) (if you must add more to West/Eastspark, take that number from this one)
- 65% at Sunken Ring (if you are Horde) or Broken Ring (if you are Alliance)
The Battle
When the battle starts, caster DPS at the walls should take out the turrets ASAP.
Start pumping out vehicles. Send your largest force from your largest occupied workshop, and a smaller force from the other one. Don't load up on sieges and just zerg it, but get at least 2-3 catapults to escort the demos and sieges. People not in vehicles should either protect the workshop (some) or be escorting the siege on ground.
Every siege engine should have a gunner
. Gunners are vital. They help protect the siege engine and also do a considerable amount of extra damage to walls. If you get in a siege vehicle, immediately ask for a gunner. Once the siege is near the wall, the driver should just spam the ram option while the gunner shoots cannonballs at the wall, unless there are more important threats to worry about.
The good part about Demos is they all have guns that can be operated by the driver. Unless you have to take care of another threat, start loading shots into the wall/door as soon as you are in range.
Catapults should use plague barrels to take down large clusters of enemies, and should
always
be spamming the flame option when they have a chance. However, catapults have very little survivability, so don't just go kamikaze into a large group of enemies.
Tower Defense
Tower Defense is vital to an offensive raid. Losing all 3 towers results in 10 precious minutes being taken off of your timer. The important part of tower defense is to know what tower is under attack. You can see both allied and enemy vehicles on your map, so open it up and find out which way they are moving.
When a workshop in the south is captured and forces are unable to immediately recapture it, then all tower defense should focus on defending the towers on both sides of that workshop. Find out which way the vehicles are going, and direct most of your defense to that tower. The guns should be manned, but attackers on the ground helps a large amount. I don't reccomend having more than 1 vehicle for tower defense, save them for the offensive team.
The quicker you cut down a tower destruction raid, the better. Don't wait for the vehicles to reach the tower. Send out players to meet them and immediately start bombing them. Siege engines should go first, followed by demolishers, followed by catapults (if there are any).
When the timer nears 10 minutes, tower defense is vital. At this point, losing the towers means a guaranteed loss for the raid. If the defenders are struggling, have a few offense players go down and help them. It's important to remember that losing two towers doesn't mean a loss - as long as the third stands, the timer doesn't take a hit. And obviously, it's easier to defend the last tower.
When the Walls Fall
Once you have hit the courtyard (the section of the fort with the stone shard vendor and the Titan Relic door), things heat up. Almost every defender will be in the courtyard, making it not only a lagfest, but a hard blockade to break.
Demolishers and Siege Engines have to better time to take advantage of their turrets. Damage the door as soon as it is in range.
Because of the cluster of defenders, it may be wise to start breaking down the walls on the other side of the fortress if you haven't already. Using this method, some defenders will be distracted, and once you break through the defenders will have to hold off assaults from both sides, which is not easy. Once your sieges reach the door, start spamming the ram. Once a vehicle reaches the door, the gunners should NOT focus at ALL on players, but on the wall. Chances are, only one or two vehicles that reach the wall will survive.
When the door falls, someone has to run in and right-click the Titan Relic to win. Use any shields you have now, just in case. Pallys can bubble up for an easy cap, mages can ice bubble. This part is usually not very hard.
If you Win
Congratulations! You will be awarded bonus honor and 3 Wintergrasp Marks of Honor. There will be a short period of a large amount of PvP action between the ex-defenders and the victors at the fort, but it will end swiftly. Get your raid gear out and start looking for a VoA group. Turn in your weekly quests if you have any.
If you Lose
Sucks, but it happens. You will still be awarded a Wintergrasp Mark of Honor for your efforts. If you are in the fort, there will be some PvP action, but I'd just leave if I were you. You can turn in your weekly quests at your flight point in western (Horde) or eastern (Alliance) Wintergrasp.

Wintergrasp - Defense
I'll let you know now I rarely win defense battles because the Horde on my server is no good at it. But still, I know a couple tips to victory.
Unfortunately, offense is very zergable, so if you have more than about 8 stacks of tenacity, things will be tough on your faction.
One of the best goals to winning a defensive battle is to choke their vehicle count. By capturing all of the workshops, the offense will be able to make no vehicles. Chances are they will have at least one, but with one they can only make 4 vehicles.
Preparation
As with offense, you should get raid members to Wintergrasp prior to the battle. However, the defenders will be able to enter the Wintergrasp portal prior to the battle (unless it's bugged, which it sometimes is), making it easier.
Firstly, send some people to capture the southern shops. If the offense loses the southern shops early, their chances of winning are drastically reduced. Send around 6 people to each southern shop.
Then next part is optional - sending defenders to keep the enemy from capturing their most occupied shop (find out beforehand where they are sending forces to. If they are sending forces to neither, assume it is the shop nearest to their flight point). You may succeed, but if you fail, then not only will the offense have the shop, but they will also have the kills they need to start making vehicles. If you are facing off against a large raid (if you have a tenacity of 5 or more), it'd probably be best not to do this.
Either way, you should send about 6-8 people to the shop that has the least offensive occupation there, to secure a capture.
The rest of your players should be in the fort. Man the turrets on the side that you will be receiving the most offense. Tower turrets are best because they are hard to reach with range and impossible with melee, yet they can still shoot at vehicles from (relative) safety.
The Battle
When the battle starts, you should capture the southern shops rather quickly. As soon as you capture a shop, have at least two vehicles made and send them out to the
outer
tower closest to them. Because you can capture the workshops on the way back and will need help with tower defenders, all if the people at a workshop should help destroy the tower. Once an outer tower has fallen, have about 2 people help fell the other outer tower. When they have both been taken down, make 2 vehicles at least from each southern workshop and crush the middle tower.
Expect resistance. It may be a better idea to focus on one tower at a time - first, capture the southern shop furthest from the main concentration of offensive players and take out that tower, then switch, then take down the middle tower. This is especially reccommended if you have tenacity.
Fort defense can be tough. Make sure most of the turrets on the side of the most offense are manned. When the sieges start rolling, have most of your players go out into the field to defend it. Seperate healers among your ranks. Kill vehicles in order of priority - sieges, demos, then catapults. Don't forget to knock out players as well.
If and when the last wall falls and your door is vurnerable, all defenders who are not attacking towers should retreat to the courtyard, save maybe 1/5 of that amount, who should try to stop the siege in it's tracks. At this point, it all really comes down to skill, chance, and whether or not the enemy manages to break down the other wall.
Good luck.

I have been to many, many battles in Wintergrasp, and here is all the information I have gained about it thus far
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WINTERGRASP
There Is Currently 2 Bosses In Vault Of Archavon
-Archavon the Stone Watcher
-Emalon the Storm Watcher
and in the Patch 3.2...
-Koralon the Flame Watcher
Every 2 1/2 hours, a battle for Lake Wintergrasp takes place
The attacking team has 30 minutes to touch the Titan Relic
To do so, well, you gotta bust some heads, and and shoot down some walls, and make your way into the inner part of the fortress
After you have gotten through 2 walls, you must now destroy the keep door, and have one person touch the Titan Relic
Walls cannot be damaged via player spells and attacks, they can only be damaged by Catapults, Demolishers, and Siege Engines
There Is 3 Ranks In Wintergrasp
-Recruit (You get this when you first enter the battle, cannot make any vehicle)
-Corporal (You must kill 10 players during the battle to reach this rank, can now make Catapults)
-First Lieutenant (You must kill another 10 players during the battle, and can now make Catapults, Demolishers, and Siege Engines)
Facts About The Vehicles
-Catapults: Fast, small tanks that can breathe fire and shoot plague barrels into the air, do not do much damage to walls, they are commonly used to fight off enemy players from the big tanks while they get the walls, towers, and workshops down, has the least health out of all of them, I think these move 60% faster than regular run speed, only carries one person, no passengers are allowed
-Demolishers: Semi sized tanks that do more damage ranged than they do right next to something, they have 2 abilities, they can ram a wall or tower, or even enemy players, but are advised to not worry about the players, and focus on the walls, let the footmen and the Catapults take care of them, their 2nd ability is hurling a huge ball of fire, doing very good damage on walls, towers, and workshops, and this ability can be used to eliminate a massive number of enemy players if needed, these tanks have the 2nd most health out of all of them, these vehicles move at regular run speed, can carry 2 passengers and the driver as well
-Siege Engines: Huge tanks that do massive damage at melee range, they again have 2 abilities, they can ram, which is done by the driver of the vehicle, and they can shoot bombs, which is done by the gunner on top of the tank, the ram ability does more damage than the gun's ability, these tanks have the most health out of all of them, these mover slower than regular run speed, very slow vehicles, which is one reason they need to be protected the most, these types of tanks should not be going after towers, they are much too slow, and will likely be killed on the way to a tower by enemy players, 4 people may ride on this tank, the driver, the gunner, and 2 free spots commonly used as safe zones for players close to dying
Offense
-Get walls down, protect your workshops and southern towers, and kill enemy players, and finally, touch the Titan Relic, the more workshops you own, the more tanks you can make, if you lose all 3 of your southern towers, you lose 10 minutes in the fight, destroying the towers at the fortress will seriously help you a lot, for every tower up, the enemy team has a buff to increase strength by a large number, less towers up, less powerful the buff is to them, destory all the fortress towers, the buff goes away, all ranged dps should be destroying guns in the fortress
Good Offensive Strategies
-2 Front War: Have some of your team attack one side of the fortress, and distract the enemy players from the other teammates that will be destroying different walls, and getting to the Titan Relic with a free pass, works better with bigger teams
-Rushing A Wall: Everybody on your team attacks one wall to quickly get it down, with small, limited defense, this is commonly done by small groups
-Air Strike: There is 4 parts to the Wintergrasp Fortress, send 8 people to Icecrown, make sure they all have Artisan Riding Skill, and an epic flyer, 2 people fly into the middle part of the fortress, kill all the guns in there, 2 people go into the south part, again, kill all the guns in there, 2 go to the east part, and again, kill all the guns, same for the west side of the fortress as well, even kill the guns in the fortress towers if you can, just kill as many guns as you can from the inside, this strategy is rarely used, but works most of the time, best if used by big teams
Defense
The first thing you should be doing when you get there is manning all the guns in the fortress, provided they are still there, kill 10-20 enemy players, rank up, and start destroying southern towers, destroy them all, they attacking team loses 10 minutes, severely hurting their chances to win
Good Defensive Strategies
-Stopping The Siege: Everybody stays in the fortress, all guns being used to kill tanks and enemy players, and continue doing this until the time is up, best if used by a huge team built of common PvP'ers
-Toppling The Towers: Rank up as soon as you can, and as soon as you do so, go for the southern towers, and get them all down fast, and get back to the fortress to defend for the rest of the time, this is the most common strategy used overall
-Didn't Stand A Chance: Hold as many workshops as possible, the fewer workshops they enemy team has, the less tanks they can make, causing less damage to the fortress walls, if you hold every workshop, the enemy team cannot make any tanks at all, therefor stopping all damage to the fortress walls, making it impossible to get to the Titan Relic, this strategy is commonly used by medium sized teams with no other option, this will make it a very long battle
Tenacity
Say you have 40 Horde players in the Wintergrasp zone overall, and there is 45 Alliance player in the zone, the Horde gains 1 Tenacity, for every 5 more players there is than your team, you gain 1 Tenacity, the buff increases your health and damage done dramatically, the buff also goes towards your team's tanks as well, so fight in groups, and use this buff to your advantage
Weekly Quests
PvP
Both factions have a weekly quests to kill 10 enemy players in Wintergrasp, can be done during or between the battles, offensive and defensive
Both factions have a weekly quests to defend or pilot tanks while a wall, tower, or workshop is destroyed, can be done during an offensive or defensive battle

WG is a Lagfest.
3.2 promises to take care of that (and also add a Battlemaster to every faction city as well as Shatt and Dal) by cappig the number of allowed combatants at 100 per side or 200 total. I remember a few weeks ago I was in a match with well over 500 combatants (which I admit is impressive, more so since my server doesn't have an abundance of willing BG participants).
WG's appeal VS the others is you're PvPing with just your SERVER so...yeah XD

This is for all the fisherman out there. Just got done fishing here for 1 hour with a 1 hour lure I got from the fishing daily. I have a 450 + 133 fishing skill and these were my numbers from FishingBuddy.
Glacial Salmon 78 (36.4%)
Nettlefish 65 (28.7%)
Musselback Sculpin 63 (29.4%)
Giant Darkwater Clam 8 (3.7%)
Hope This Helps!

as of the patch it is now a 120 vs 120 bg. People will have to go in a queue to enter. An lvl can enter but the higher lvls get to enter first. If anyone tries to enter wintergrasp during the battle they will be transported out.

Queueing to participate in WG currently requires you to be level 75 or higher.

This just in! Flying mounts won't abandon you in WG anymore! Thats right you can fly through without breaking your face open! Flying is accepted until the beginning of the WG Battle. (side note #1)....Any1 of the opposing faction who thinks himself smart about flying into the fortress before the battle is sadly mistaken and will be dropped on their buts outside of the keep. (side note #2)....Do NOT ask for invites anymore becuase there is now a queue for WG like any of the other BGs in the game, 120 players are allowed on either side (3 40 man raids), but don't get flustered becuase it would be rare to find that many ppl rushing for WG at that time so you should get your spot on the roster. (side note #3)....The Queue is open 15 minutes prior to the beginning of WG. (side note #4)....Flying mounts are effective in WG while doing one of the weeklies that requires 10 items from the opposite faction (A rare herb, Fueling The Demolishers, Etc. Etc.), they are your best friend for these weeklies because if you fly 20 feet in the air while searching for the next mob to hack down for items, then a wandering rogue won't stun lock you and have a tea party with your corpse.

I entered wintergrasp 1.5 hours before we were due to attack and while killing npc's to get the kills quest done while i was passing through i reached corporal then first lieutenant, in between battles.
It would appear that you can obtain the ranks before wg but now they disapear if you log out and at the start of the battle too.

They still need to work on balancing this zone. I love Wintergrasp, but on Malygos, Alliance outnumbers Horde at least 5:1. It's difficult winning a battle when Horde has 30 players and Alliance has 100...

I just want to say that this is the most unfair part of WoW that I've ever seen. It makes me want to quit playing Wintergrasp forever and a lot of players I know have done just that. I thought I'd see more posts mentioning this and that is why the heck can't the Alliance win a little more often than once every 24 hours, at best. Most of the time we go without a win for 1 to 2 days, sometimes much longer than that. I hope Blizzard sees this problem and does something since I am getting tired of being holed up in our corner graveyard since we are constantly being overrun by horde players on vehicles using recently slain players for target practice! Sometimes I wonder if the horde ever sleep or go to school on weekdays. Perhaps horde players are just better at pvp. I cannot think of any solution to this myself but I must say thank you to whoever came up with the idea of the faction change service, that will sure help us win more, lol.

reply to duskfire:
The first thing you said makes no sense at all
so if youre controlling you get same benefits as defending...controlling is the same as defending...only differance is that you DEFEND during battle
Factors 2,3 and 4 are completely the same....
and you think that controlling wintergrasp has no benefit?
i assume you never raid, you never pvp and i assume you are jsut a forum troll berserking at blizzard every day
by having wintergrasp you can:
1. collect stone keepers shards
2.do vault of archavon for completely free lewt with no effort
3.read 1 and 2 again

Most named NPC's in Wintergrasp are the ex-lieutenants and commanders from Alterac Valley that were removed upon patch 2.2 if I recall correctly.
Commander Dardosh
was one of the two guards of
Captain Galvangar's
fortress.
Commander Zanneth
was one of the two guards of
Captain Balinda Stonehearth's
fort, along with
Tactical Officer Ahbramis
, who was then named "Lieutenant Greywand"
Siegesmith Stronghoof
was the guardian of the Frostwolf Healing Hut (I'm french, I don't know the exact name ; I'm talking about the Graveyard nearest to Drek'thar's fortress) banner, and was named Commander Stronghoof.
Lieutenant Murp
would patrol around
this path
.

Does a player get ported out of the battle if they go AFK? Is there a certain location that they would get ported to? Since this is a PVP zone rather than a standard battleground such as Alterac Valley, would a player get kicked to that "safe" zone that the patch notes talk about players getting sent to if they do not queue?
Can anyone provide a location of that safe zone in Icecrown? I know that it is north of Wintergrasp, but I was hoping that someone would know the exact location.
Thanks!

So have they added in the arena ratings yet, or is it still as it was when it was released...? I heard that they were gonna start doing that if anyone could give me an educated answer, it would be much appreciated!

Is it possible to damage the workshops with the cannons on the side-towers of the keep? Their range is fairly good, so I would suspect you can lob a shell into the area there and cause some havoc. But I don't think I've ever seen it actually occur. Thoughts?

The balance for wintergrasp needs a significant improve. As some comments listed above, how can 10 alliance/horde best 200 horde/alliance?Yes,there is tenacity, but it is useless when the imbalance is huge.I think they should raise the tenacity stack number for example making it unlimited, improve the damage and health bonus for tenacity, make vehicles benefit from tenacity even more, and once certain stack numbers are achieved, player will gain CC and slow immunity.

For those who don't know, the workshops offer 4 Total vehicles each. Capturing the Attackers workshops SEVERELY hurts their performance. Wintergrasp will end much quicker if the opposing sides towers are all destroyed as well.

It's possible to get here if You are an Engineer. Just get to the highest tower in Dalaran, and then use your rocket boots and Parachute tinker. ;)

On many servers, there is an noticeable difference in how often each faction controls Wintergrasph compared to the other. For example, on US-Azgalor, the Horde has it substantially more than the Alliance.
The reason for this control imbalance, on any server, is likely the result of one or more of the following reasons.
Player Imbalance
- While this is often the result of one faction caring more about Wintergrasp than the other, it can also be the result of having a severe faction population imbalance on a server. It is widely accepted that Tenacity is, as of now, incapable of fully performing its job (balancing the factions), primarily because it does nothing to affect CC effects. Usually, there is nothing that can be done about this unless you get your whole faction into a battle.
Southern Towers and Workshops
- I cannot stress the importance of the southern workshops and, especially, towers. For example, I was once in a battle where we, the offense, had all 4 workshops and a few walls down, but screwed ourselves over at the beginning of the fight by not defending the towers. Those 10 minutes probably would have won us the match. Not to mention, each tower gives a 5% damage bonus, and 15% damage is something you'll miss when you need it most. As for defense, it is crucial to destroy the towers. Doing so knocks off a substantial amount of time from the clock, which you'll want, and weakens the offense. The shops are equally important. If the defense gets them, they have an easier way to take down the towers and steal 8 potential vehicles from the offense.
Skill Differences
- Sometimes you'll just find yourself facing really well geared, and more skilled PvPers. In that case, there's not much you can really do unless you have a PvP guild or two to counterbalance them.
Preparation
- While this isn't a huge deal, it can help. Some people like to make raids beforehand and put a certain amount of people at each workshop beforehand. Another tactic for the offense is to have a few ranged classes knock out the wall turrets right after the battle starts, helping the tanks stay alive longer.
Lone Wolves (Offense)
- Get this through your head, if you haven't already.
Never, ever, ever leave a workshop unless you are in a group of at least 3 tanks
. A single tank is laughably easy for defenders to take down. Organize when you will charge, where from, and how many tanks you will have. And every tank should have a gunner.
Tank Defense
- You will want to have a good amount of ground support (I'd say about 2 ground players for each tank). Rather than attempt to kill all of the defenders, players who are protecting tanks should CC players who are attacking tanks. The purpose is not to kill the people attacking tanks, but to reduce the damage tanks take. For this reason, it is best to ignore any of the defense's healers while you are protecting a tank.
Workshop Defense
- Each workshop owned by a faction raises that faction's vehicle cap by 4. For this reason, both of the top workshops should be heavily defended (at least 4 or 5 at all times), and the south workshops must not be forgotten (generally they are attacked the most at the start of a battle, so a good amount of defense should be there right after the battle begins).
Zerging the Wrong Place
- If there are 20 people sitting at a workshop, no matter how many times 10 people try to take it, they'll almost always fail (unless Tenacity is really, really high). Know when something is a lost cause, leave it alone for a while, and come back when there are less defenders. In addition, I have seen many situations in which the offense breaks through a front wall, and that section of the fortress is filled with defenders. Unless you are in the very last part of the fort (in front of the relic room door), don't try to take tanks into heavily guarded places. There are other parts of the fort that can be attacked. Once you do reach the final section of the fort, use the tank's turret to take out the door. When the door is down, you'll want a stealth class, a mage with Invisibility, or a bubbled Paladin to cap the relic.

Coming from a realm where the alliance on a good day has 6 stacks of tenacity and routinely hits 15ish it is possible to still win. But you have to have the right amount of preparation. I (arms warrior), a restro druid, a hunter, and a boomkin were able to hold the western courtyard of the base after parachuting in (Flying above the base then landing once the battle began). We held it for a good 15 minutes. A skilled arena team with 8ish stacks of tenacity is pretty much invincible. The only problem is getting our side to listen to us and attack west and not just farm HKs in the east. Once they did that we've won on occasion. Now, what would be nice is if blizzard actually made tenacity effect CC and slows but that would require common sense on their part.
I'm particularly upset about how weak tenacity is because in Cata we are going to have our daily quests cut off because the horde out number us by such a large margin on my server.

I've been looking around, but have not found the answer to my question. What are the requirements in order to do WG? I can do it in on my main toon, but none of my others. Am I required to be friendly with The Sunreavers? This is only thing I can see that is different from my main and other toons.

(2022) Dear fellow player/reader. I observe that at the date of this comment (October 2022) that the comments posted in this version of Wowhead's "Wintergrasp (Wrath)" contains Comments posted entirely in the period 2008 to 2010. At that time Wintergrasp battles occurred in an open world pvp environment. The participants were restricted to players on the realm where the battle occurred.
As at now, the year 2022, the current Wintergrasp 'classic' (Wrath) version, recently released, is an instanced version of the Wintergrasp battle and is designed and supports player participation cross realms.
The majority of the 2008-2010 comments, and the pre-amble in the heading, are no longer relevant and even misleading so I encourage any posters to start New comment rather than attach to Old comment threads.
2 other obvious changes:- (1) In 2022 players can queue and enter Wintergrasp at level 71 via the relevant faction battle master in Dalaran; and
(2) The instanced battles become available/commence every 3 hours at (Realm time) 3am, 6am, 9am, noon, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, midnight... It is possible to queue to enter a Wintergrasp for 30 minutes after the start time, regardless of how long that battle may (or may not) run over the end of that 30 minutes. A character cannot enter more than one Wintergrasp in each 30 minute period the battleground is open
(though initially characters could until Blizzard hotfixed that)
HOWEVER it is possible to swap to another character on the same player account and queue to enter Wintergrasp during the 30 minute window.

If you want to visit Wintergrasp to turn in quests, etc. you must wait until after 30 minutes after the set Wintergrasp start times. Otherwise it will try to invite you to an instance/slice/layer of Wintergrasp, or kick you back to Dalaran if you happen to finish yours before 30 minutes had transpired. Be safe and wait 40 minutes past the starting hour. Also, I'm not sure, but it seems that our server defaults to Alliance holding the keep between the battlehours, but I'd like to hear from others.

It seems that there is no other way to get to the open zone without a flying mount, the portal doesn't seem to exist at the moment, regardless if your faction controls it or not.
