Drain life may be the most powerful and underestimated spell in the game. On it's own, this spell can turn a heavy spell damage warlock into a "drain tank" AKA able to take a lot of damage because he can heal himself by spamming drain life. With Shadow Mastery / Soul Link talents this spell becomes amazing. Check this out...

First of all shadow dots are instant to open fight with. With them all on a target you get 6 affliction effects (Corruption, Curse of Agony, Siphon Life, Shadow Embrace, Fear/Death Coil, Drain life. This makes the Soul Siphon talent increase drain by 30%. Also all shadow spells are increased by 10% from Shadow Mastery. With a Succubus all spells are increased by 10% from master demonologist. With Soul Link all spells are increased by 5% and pet takes 20% damage. With Demonic Aegis you get an additional 30 spell damage and 6% increase with Fel Armor which increases drain spells by 20% and spell damage by 100.

So what does this come out too?
With no spell damage gear=
108-Drain life
10%-SM
5%-SL
10%-MD
26% + 33.3 DPS-Demonic Aegis with Fel armor
30%-Soul Siphon
108 + 33.3* 1.81 = 255.75 Drain per Second

Now with Gear with 500 bonus spell damage or 166.66 dps (based on what I am wearing as a level 67)
108 + 33.3 + 166.66 * 1.81 = 557.4 Drain per second

So as you can see in this very long post, this spell is not to be underestimated. This is how I win PVP.

It's a great spell. I have very mediocre gear, I'm level 67 at the moment, yet I'm draining about 230hp per second!

So in three seconds, the time it takes to cast a shadowbolt, I'm draining about 700hp.

Now if I compare that to my shadowbolts which are hitting about 975, you might think its crap. But because its a drain, you have to think in terms of HP advantage over my opponent!

So in 3 secs I get 700hp AND they loose 700hp, giving my a 1,400hp advantage!

The drawbacks though. Its just asking to get counterspelled, silenced or whatever. Also I heard one rogue describe this spell as a "Here I am, beam", which is true.

ofc this spell drains a lot of dmg, but with improved fel armor you also be healed for 20% more than normal ( that includes death coil spell ) so 100dmg / 5sec = 20 more dmg, total aprox your dmg with 2700 from drain life, u get 2700health + 20% percent of what u drain! THAT is more imba guys!:D

Elplay's math is quite wrong. W/ 1k spell damage, this spell would still only be draining under 400damage/second. I don't feel like proving my point, just do the math yourself. His numbers are wrong and some spells he counts don't affect Drain Life. A shame though.

And with that much spell damage, you might as well be full out Affliction for the benefits it provides.

''fear needs a CD'' no it WILL only last 10 sec in pvp and then 5 sec if u use a PVP tricket then you will be IMMUNE.

yeah thats wat i use it for when im soloing i use life tap to regain the mana i use from dots then life drai and by that time wat ever im killing is dead and i have full health and mana

The other day I had fel armor on in Kara with 1100 + shadow damage and My Drain life was healing me for 601 therefore with the imp fel armor just subtract the additional 30% of my tics. Then that is 400 damage per tic over 5 seconds roughly. That is also while CoA, corruption, unstable affliction, and siphon life are ticking away. Talk about good dps no need for shadow bolts

not overpowered, use in pvp people can follow the green line and interupt it somehow, every class can, and if you are a class that has some form of magic removal you can remove the debuff and stop the spell cast instantly. Well that works in PvE anyway, as a pally ive never been drained in PvP.
Forgot to mention that my 53 demon lock can get 103 a tick with poor shadow dmg (about 140) so at lvl 70 specced affliction it may come close to predicted above .

If you are specced with Soul Siphon and Demonic Aegis with fel armor on the math looks something like this * 1.26 = life gain, the last "* 1.26" from the fel armor is not in damage done. Soloing you can have 5 affections on a guy including fear and with a shadow damage of about 1000 the life gained would be about 2425 health over 5 secs or 485 health per sec. In a raid with good gear (1300 +shadow) and at 12 or more affections it can be 3710 health over 5 secs or 741 health per sec, though that does not take into account any +shadow curse like COS or shadow priest's shadow weave which could add another 23%. So, in total a lock specced for this could gain as much as 4563 health over 5 sec or 912 health a sec.

oone has managed to do any correct math yet. Drain life gets about 71% of your spelldmg applied over the entire duration.

Lets say 1k spelldmg and 4 dots (as in fighting a single aff lock, keep in mind that 1k spelldmg is either full merciless or with low health)

((108 * 5) + (0.71 * 1000))* (1 + (4 * 0.05))* 1.1 = 1650

So it does about 1650 dmg over 5 secs if you have shadow mastery (10% more dmg on shadow spells) and 1000 +shadow dmg and 4 aff effects on the target. It heals for the same amount obviously.

Assuming you have demonic aegis it will heal for:

1650 * 1.26 = 2079 which is 415/tick.

415/tick with 4 dots, improved fel armour and 1000 +dmg. There you go.

And if your pve dps build does not have bane and you're spamming drain life, you're not doing the dmg you should be doing. End of story.

This spell is so freaking good, but it's a risk using this vs a rogue, if they use CoS and interrupts you ( kick ) you're in the deep %^&*... warriors or any other class might have pummel etc, but the dots is still there and does its dmg.
I would say this spell should not be used vs rogues unless you're far away or you got a good amount of hp left...

If anyone is wondering, bonus spell damage (as opposed to bonus healing) is what modifies drain life, and it's shadow based damage.
