I were farming for my Phantom Blade, killed like 20 of this guys but, only got two Breath of Wind. So they do drop but, its very low drop rate.

The drop rate is correct, the reason it seems off is that it doesnt figure in the times that the vortex's drop nothing at all. those are ignored. SO, of the times that the vortex's DID drop an item, 84% of those instances, the drop was a breath of wind.

I have spent over 3 hours trying to find Gusting Vortexes and have yet to even see one. I need to gather 6 Breath of Winds.

Yeah, i think they were removed from Tanaris.
I have yet to see one on the Dunemaul server in this zone.

Ran around central tanaris spamming macro /target gusting vortex. found two that spawn in the same loc fairly fast. got what i needed in about 20 mins once i found them.

I found 2 around 47, 48. By the way, whenever you see a Land Rager, kill it. A Gusting Vortex may spawn in the same area or another one later. I had to kill about 8-10 before getting my 2 Breath of Wind though.

ok, the drop rate for breath of wind on these guys is definitely NOT 84%
i killed like 6 in a row, none of them dropped breath of wind
in fact, none of them drop anything at all
and it took me like half to an hr jus to find those 6........

This makes farming these mobs clearly unfair. Sad that AH brings nothing, no one sells them :(

my server is almost as bad, Breaths of Wind are selling for 14g EACH on the AH!

I'm needed "Breath of wind" for both my elemental leatherworking (2 peices) and to craft Blackstorm Leggings https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=29964 (8 peices). So i looked it up and started grinding Gusting Vortex... sucks. So i finded a spot where both land riders, witch drops deeprock salt (also needed in leatherworking and as alexthegamerfool said a vortex can spawn), and gusting vortex pass (about 47.7 - 49.8) . And i turned the sound to max, no music and did something else untill i heard i was attacked... sometimes a basilisk or something else attack, but sometimes a gusting vortex or a land rider come =)

It really goes against the on screen tip they give you about keeping everything in moderation, even the world of warcraft. Any weapons that you craft take at least 4 breaths of wind. You have to run around using countless hrs doing nothing but hoping that it will drop. Trying to raise your blacksmithing one point.

As few of them as there are around, they should at least drop something each time. THIS REALLY SUCKS.

Had to farm Breath of Wind for Elemental Leatherworking quest and for Blackstorm Leggings and was surprised that I've got 10 of items in less than 40 kills but spent about 3 hours killing since there are only 6 of them in the zone and I had to do full run around the zone, find them (they are constantly running by some paths about 200-300 yards each), kill Land Ragers that are respawning instead of those, and even wait to respawn (from 2 to 20 minutes in my experience).

I have listened to what you have said about the drop rate and it is not supported by data collection practices. If you throw out the times when nothing is dropped then you are creating false data. Drop Rate = Number of times the item's dropped / the number of kills -- end of story. No qualifiers about if it drops nothing then we throw out the data; just number of kills.

No, Drop Rate = number of times an item was looted from a dead mob / number of times that dead mob was looted.

But if the mobs drops nothing, then the wowhead addon does not (or cannot) record the looting "event". So if you loot a dead mob, and it has dropped nothing, it will not count at all.

The wowhead client does indeed "create false data" in some cases, and this is one of those times. Yes, it is poor data collection practices, but that's how the addon works.

There are multiple spawns for the Gusting Vortex in Tanaris so dont be afraid to wonder around and get some good ones. Remembering that they do in fact share spawn with the other elementals the Ragers.

After about a solid hr of farming them (and the drop rate is pretty low) I managed to farm 3 Breath of wind from the Vortex which also dropped Imposing Shoulders for me.

All up I'd say they commonly drop nothing, but when they do its a good chance to be Breath of wind or Elemental Air.

3/5 I found either a Gusting Vortex or a Land Rager.

I sought out these guys to farm Breath of Wind. Drop rate for me seemed very low; I farmed these guys for two hours and only got 4 BoW and 2 Elemental Air.

However, the first one I killed dropped a Precisely Calbrated Boomstick, so I'm not complaining.

They definately still drop breath of wind, I just killed 2 so far, and 1 of them did drop breath of wind.
2 out of 5 so far :)

The eventual outcome for my farming was 10 breath of wind out of 28 kills, which is around 35% drop rate.

The drop rate for Breath of Wind is definately not 47%... I farmed these for three days and the drop rate is probably closer to 14.7% maybe, and that's if you are lucky.

48 kills 6 BoW total.

I have just been farming these to get 6 BoW to make a phantom blade....

The drop rate, in my experience is about 1 in 5 kills (average) - so about 20% i'd say.

The main annoying thing is that the gusting vortexes are difficult to findl. I'd say there are probably only 5 or 6 on the entire map at any one time....and i've found they travel around on random paths - rather than wandering in circles....so this makes ity extra difficult to find them.

I find that going up to the hill in front of gadgetzan (where the 'abyssal sands' text is on the map), and then doing a large circular run around the map...going out to the noxious lair...then down to the rocks just north east of the dunemaul compound....then across to the caverns of time area.....up to winterspring field...and back to the large hill. You should pass 2-4 gusting vortexes per round trip (note - if you spot any rock elementals....kill them...they occupy the spawn points of the gusting vortexes).

A word of warning.....be prepared to get frustrated....you can go killing 8,9 or 10 without a drop....which can take a long time...put the kettle on, get some snacks, have one eye on the TV and grind.....cos it IS a grind.

Finding these guys was not a problem. They seem to be all over the place. I slaughtered them for about 4 hours and I only recieved one breath of wind. Honestly the longest I had to look for a vortex was maybe 2 - 3 minutes. The drops are very hit or miss. My buddy came out for a different quest and killed one because it was in his way and got a breath of wind. Arrrgggghhhh! I wish they at least dropped some other kind of vendor trash. When your not lucky enough to get the breaths you walk away with nothing but frustration.

I went around Abyssal and found only a few Gusting Vortex. They do have high drop rate for "Breath of Wind" but they spawn only a few in tanaris!
Just go around Abyssal and Dunemaul Compound. You'll find them.
I spent 1 hour to get 6 x Breath of Wind.

It was quite funning, i was farming for some breath of wind and i had just killed a gusting vortex, then i logged on to this look at a couple comments and went back onto the game, and there was another one right there! It seems the have about3-5 minuste respawn timer

tried farming these guys for a while.

1. Hard to find.
2. Never drops the Mats for the Phantom Blade.
3. Never drops anything?

Correct. Ive killed 23 so far.
And not even ''ONE'' of them dropped something.

i think the droprate of the lv 45 is higher than the lv 44 i killed 2 lvl 45 Gusting Vortex and 3 lvl 44
none of the lvl 44 droped breath of wind but the two lvl 45 both did

To add to this mystery the vortexes mainly wonder around abyssal sands and seems to stretch on from that point. from the 15min grind i found 3 vortexes and 1 breath of wind dropped. although the drop rate is frustrating in itself, finding a vortex is even worse. i highly recommend u hire a hunter to search for elementals and help u on ur grind.....

Okay read the text folks. Iknow lots of legends in their own minds stuff. In there is all the information.

Just spent 30 minutes farming. Note to self kill LAND RAGERs too. They do seem to occupy the same space as the vortexes. Killed 5 vortex and got 2 BOW, bonus the ragers dropped 1 core of earth and 1 elementel earth.

Location: So for those who need sat nav to get out of bed, bring up your map, and head to the middle. The would be the abyssal sands, and well ride around a lot. The dam things wander around so you have to find them. Not everything in the world is easy.

Finding these guys is fairly easy, just run around Tanaris with a /target Gusting Vortex macro. Spam the macro as you run around and you will find plenty of them.

the breaths sell for a lot mebbe 9g in the cenarius server so whenever i see these guys or living storms i kill em mebbe a 30% drop rate but i dont go looking for em cuz u never find them if u do.

just dropped by to say i was running around Tanaris for about an hour in search of these critters and i finally found 2 allmost at the same spot. wouldn't you know it? they both dropped BoW. found them around 47.50 good luck to all BoW amateurs out there (p.s. use a "/target Gusting Vortex" macro, it really helps) cheers!

You don't have to run all over Tanaris to farm these. Pick a spot -- I was at 50,48 -- and kill everything. They spawn randomly in among the basilisks, scorpids, and hyenas. I got them faster just staying put.

Just spent 2 hours in NW Silithus 28-22. Been here many times and will get about a 1 in 10 drop rate off wind elementals for BOW. Today I cleared each area 4 times at least 175 kills and didn't get 1 BOW. Noticed that not near as much elemental air and essence of air dropped either.

Anyone else experienced this?

The co-ords given above by seebs (my thanks) are great (50,48)... I decided to camp where he said and long behold within about an hour i found i think five or 6 breath of winds. The thing is that every 5minutes about 2 of those Land Ragers will come and then after that two gusting vortexes will come and they are normally close together. All i did was watch a movie (because i was a preety higher lvl then the monsters around so no agro) and alt tab back in every couple of minutes and the drop rate is fantastic compared to other monsters! If you are lucky a core of earth will drop from the Land Ragers wandering pass aswell which sell for about 1 or 2g less then breath of winds unfortunately and also have a lower chance of dropping then breath of winds (much lower). If you are a black smith, engineering, leatherworking, and enchanting It's best that u hold onto the core of earths until you're certain you don't want them because in BSing u need for about 4 recipes i think and for engineering you need for 2 which one of them u need 4 Core of Earths to make a teleporter trinket to Gadgetzan (You know that gnome guy next to the teleporter thing? Talk to him and he will give it to you for free at 275 (I think) in GNOMISH engineering) and the Core of Earths are the most frustrating part to create it, 3 in Leather working and 1 in enchanting. I recommend researching it up if you were the following.

Also, the Land Ragers drop Core of Earth and Elemental Air. They're worth killing if you see them.

I found one at 43.57 and like the guys above said, i camped, killing all the other mobs.The vortex spawned pretty fast and i got 6bow in 1 hour.He dropped 6/7.

I've designed games using percentage drop rates, and really 40ish% is pretty accurate.

There's a lot more involved into it. Firstly, unless you have some nuclear material, complete random is impossible on a computer, therefore, it must follow a very complicated pattern.

One fact of this pattern is known, what happens once is bound to happen again. The reason this is 41% is a base. The chances of getting one FIRST is usually well defined by the percentage. However, once you have gotten a drop, or not a drop, it greatly increases the chances of getting or not getting one. The fact is, 40% is well defined, therefore, chances are there's gonna not be one, even though 40% is pretty high. This is why many people get 3 in a row, then miss a lot in a row. I've once got 4 drops in a row from a 1% percentage, which was the exact percentage since I was the one who made it.

So it's really difficult to measure exact percentage.

For the lazy folks I uploaded a map with kill zones and a possible travel path for you to follow (hopefully Blizz will upload it for ya). I will not guarantee a drop per kill...or even a drop per cycle...just telling ya that this is where I farm for BoW in Tanaris (5/ph).

Additionally, (and I don't care if you disagree with me or claim otherwise), I feel that if you complete a cycle too fast the server will eliminate BoW as a drop item. So take your time. Instead of hopping on your mount and heading directly to each kill spot, run on foot and farm up everything in between. Make a few cycles in Tanaris and then head over to Silithus...farm there for a while and then come back to Tanaris.

I whole-heartedly believe that the server software is somehow designed to detect if someone is farming certain kills/items, and WILL take action to prevent it by reducing the drop-rate. The only exceptions, I find, are ore and leather. Don't spend more than an hour farming one particular item in any one specific area...or you'll be sadly disappointed.

Be mobile, be patient, and be creative/productive with your time.

There used to be a lot around The Broken Pillar and the drop rate was like that, around 2/5 (40%).
however, after the patch I've seen much less of these creatures around.

Its pretty simple... Its just what depth said up top where one has to be dead for another to spawn. There is 1 more location that I went to. I have to admit it still is difficlut to find them. I spent 2-3 hours and I got 3 drops lol. The location is "around" 50.44 on the sand hills, it has writing on the map in that location. There are 2 Vortex and Land Rover (stone elemental) spawns there so you got a pretty good deal.

A little clarification. Gusting Vortex spawn is linked to "Ground Pounder Elementals". Kill Ground Pounders to get Vortex. The coordinates 58,58 & 50,45 seem to work best. You can encounter Ground Pounders almost all over Tanaris just as Depth's map shows but the spawn seems to be around the coordinates. Remember the drop rate is tied to YOUR/group level. I.E. if your low the drop is low. So my lv 52 Paladin was getting 20-25% drop. And for a laugh try escorting Tooga (starts @ about 33,70? the turtle). As soon a quest started I saw a Living Storm and later 2 Gusting Vortex lol

when I went out and was outright farming for the Breath of Wind, I thought the drop rate sucked too. Afterwards though I left my mage logged in a spot that has a possibility of 3 Vortexes pathing nearby. I would log in every day or so and kill any I saw. The droprate seemed alot more reasonable when I didnt really need the breaths badly. I farmed about 20 this way to bump my Smiths skillup on Truesilver champions. So while the droprate seems bad I dont think it really is, is finding the damn things up that makes it seem bad.

Been roaming and found a few major points where they spawn.

So far I'm 0/5...either I'm extremely unlucky or the odds on the drop for Breath of Wind has been lowered.

The spawn map by depth is bang on. I simply kept hitting every coord in a loop for about 2 hours and saw plenty of these things. Didn't keep track of how many I killed but it was at least 15 and not a single one dropped anything at all. The earth ragers dropped some crap but the vortexes simply didn't drop a thing. Maybe it has something to do with my level (52). Anyways I ended up buying these at AH and they were cheap. Got 3 for 1g 15s. Ironically core of earth (with a 4% drop rate), I got on 2 out of 3 obsidians in Searing Gorge though.

so I ran around the Tanaris area for a good hour and a half and killed like 4 of these guys and didn't get a single drop of any kind. hard enough running around trying to kill them at lvl 40. pretty disappointing, but better luck next time. that is if I ever have to get any more breath of winds. (ended up buying them on the AH)

I would like to point out that the spawn to the west of the Dunemaul Compound is bugged. Although the elemental is there, it may appear invisible (although not stealthed, so it can't be detected) yet still be able to attack.

You will not be able to counter attack, but it should appear after a few seconds of waiting

I would also like to confirm that the drop rate of Breath of Wind is by no stretch of the imagination even close to 45%.

There is also the point that even though Land Ragers are more common, I have not once seen one drop a Core of Earth. I have killed more of these than Gusting Vortexes, yet come accross 4 Breath of Wind.

I wonder if it is 50%, its more like 25%. I killed 8 of them and got 2. But the rock elementals rarely drop the core. Riding a circuit made it much easier, just need to keep ur eyes open and u can find them pretty easily. There seems to be more rock spawning than wind

All I needed was 1, for the +5 resistances cloak enchant. I killed 2 in Tanaris near 54,54 and got 1 drop at lvl 52. Hope that helps some people.

Here's what I found:

An elemental will spawn at 43,69
It's split between a Gusting Vortex and Land Rager.
The spawn time is 6-8 minutes.
If you stand at the top of the dune & look east you will be staring at the spawn spot, and the drop for breath of wind for me (52 Tauren Hunter) is poor--25% at best.

Depth, your chart is spot on mate, well done.

I spent only 25 minute going clockwise starting at the top of the map mentioned in Depth's Post. I found 10 Vortexes, almost exactly in the middle of each area indicated on the map, and 4 or 5 or the stone ones. Only problem was i did not get one drop, nothing except some solid stone. I guess there is some lucky guy out there getting 9/10 to make the numbers add up. Either way good i know how to find them now cheers depth.

I agree. I killed upwards of a 10-15 of those and got 2. And felt lucky to get that many, heh. Max 10% drop rate from my subjective view. Also those vortex mobs are far, far too rare.

I have killed about 50+ of these guys out of curiosity in Tanaris the first time around and now in Classic, mostly to get them out of the way of something else I was after. Not one has dropped anything. They're not hard and the XP is level-appropriate but if you're looking for loot, get thee to Silithus.
