Stranglethorn Raptors can prove to be particularly useful multipurpose targets to almost any player earning XP for killing them and/or requiring drops for their Professions...

Both Horde and Alliance players will have to kill 10 Stranglethorn Raptors as part of the "Raptor Mastery" quest chain given out by "Hemet Nesingwary" on the south bank of the river near the northern border of Stranglethorn Vale.

Stranglethorn Raptors, when killed, drop both "Raptor Flesh" and "Raptor Egg" frequently. This makes them an ideal target for characters with the "Cooking" secondary skill as the "Roast Raptor" and "Curiously Tasty Omelet" recipes require the flesh and egg respectively.

The high drop frequency of "Raptor Flesh" makes Stranglethorn Raptors a reliable source of food for Hunters with Meat eating pets.

"Raptor Hide" also drops from these beasts and the "Leatherworking" Profession uses this material for the "Raptor Hide Harness", "Raptor Hide Belt" as well as the excellent and highly sellable "Barbaric Bracers".

Characters with the "Skinning" Profession will be able to skin Stranglethorn Raptors for both "Medium Leather" and "Heavy Leather". Furthermore, due to the number of dead and unskinned Raptors littering Stranglethorn Vale, killed by other questing players, there's plenty of additional free leather to be had.

Killing Stranglethorn Raptors is fairly easy for most classes as their predictable behaviour and the fact they don't run away makes them easy targets. They will usually attempt to head butt any attacker at least once during melee combat. This attack, if successful, will temporarily knock a player off their feet and interrupt any action they were about to make. That's only ever really a problem if you are trying to run away from them!

For experienced player looking for something to grind to obtain level, Stranglethorn Raptors provide an easy and usually plentiful source of XP. Peak server times should be avoided for grinding them as you will have plenty of competition with other players trying to kill the for the "Raptor Mastery" quest. However, Stranglethorn Vale is a rich and densely packed source of grindable beasts and NPCs. So if you find you are running out of Raptors, there's normally something else hiding behind a bush waiting to die for your XP.

Stranglethorn Vale: Voodo, Tigers, Trolls, A Jungle and Ruins. That is just some of the things you will come across once you venture into this green lush wilderness. Tigers, raptors and panthers hunt the jungle trolls, and Nagas stalk the shore lines keeping a close snake eye out for Murlocs and Pirates.
Place to visit: The haunted isle, not because of the island it self, but for the thing lying in the water just next to it. The skeleton of a ancient snacke lies half burried in the shallow waters, its shimmering white bones make it cleasrly visable in the yellow sand. Do the first steps of "Panther Mastery" and "Tiger Mastery" before you do this quest. The mobs needed for step two of Panther Mastery and Tiger Mastery are located around these raptors, and you can bang out all three quests at once.

I actually had one of these guys drop the ironweaver for me last night(1-13-06). 1 out of 81,658.
