At the beginning of the fight, 8 (4 in 10-Man) adds are trapped in blocks of ice next to Hodir. You can break these blocks during the fight to free them and get their help. There are 4 kind of adds: Moonkins, Shamans, Mages, and Priests. Each type of add will use a special ability to help you against Hodir:
Moonkins
: Starlight - Envelops a location in starlight for 1 min, increasing the attack and casting speed of friendly units within it.
Shamans
: Storm Power - Charges a nearby friendly target with lightning, increasing critical strike damage by 135% for 30 sec.
Priests
: Dispell - Priests will randomly dispell Freeze on the members of the raid.
Mages
: Toasty fire - Warms nearby friendly creatures, preventing the effects of Freeze and Biting Cold, and increasing Spirit by 4. In addition, your Spells and Ranged attacks have a chance to singe enemies. Toasty fire can be extinguished by falling ice or Flash Freeze.
Singed - Singes the enemy, inflicting 3000 Fire damage and increasing damage taken from magical spells and effects by 2% for 25 sec. Stacks up to 30 times.

-Start the fight off by having the normal tank pull Hodir, and proceed to kill the Flash Freezes (~40k each) to free the four adds. The adds assist you an enormous amount in this fight, and keeping them alive is a huge benefit to your raid. Once all four adds are freed, start DPSing Hodir. Beware of Icicles hitting people (there will be an animation that looks like snow raining down as a warning for incoming icicles) they hit for a decent amount of damage. Much like the Keristrasza fight, you will recieve a damaging debuff if you stand still, you can remove stacks by moving, or simply jumping. The Moonkin NPC will periodically spawn beams of light (similar to the ones spawned by the Lunar Festival items), standing in them will give you a 100% haste buff, so get into those if possible.
A raid warning will call out when Hodir begins casting Flash Freeze, at which point two large, light blue circles will appear on the ground. DO NOT stand in these circles, until icicles have fallen on them to leave a clearly visible mound of snow. As soon as the snow mound appears, EVERYBODY (tank included) must stand on these mounds, or they will be encased in flash freezes, and must be broken out immediately. The NPCs will also be frozen, and should be freed as soon as possible.
The other threat to this fight is Hodir's Frozen Blows ability. This weakens Hodir's physical damage considerably, however it adds a TON of frost damage to them. Have your frost resist tank taunt him IMMEDIATELY after gaining this buff. (On ten man with ~320 resist I was still getting hit extremely hard, so I recommend going to cap with your resist). The raid will take AoE damage which must be healed through during this phase (having raid members each wear a piece of frost resist is recommended to make it easier to heal through). When the buff is gone, the MT should taunt Hodir back immediately.
Thats as good of an explanation for the fight as I can give. All in all its not too bad of a fight. Good luck :)

For this fight, it's ideal to have 1 piece of frost resist gear and for your tank to have a few pieces of frost resist gear to help reduce the amount of damage taken from Frozen Blows.

If you kill him in under 6 minutes, a second cache stays up, which appears to contain a random piece of loot from the zone.

Having "Projected Textures" set at "On" in the video options for this fight REALLY helps. With this you can see where the ice is about to fall.

The Archivum Data Disc provides the following insights when the quest is turned in:
Hodir's sigil appears to be located inside a cache of artifacts.
Watcher Hodir's temperament and behavior highly unstable. Destruction of cache highly probably during prolonged combat.
Allies present in the field of battle are likely to provide synergies and minimize combat duration.
Preservation of cache is essential to recovering Hodir's sigil.

I made the following 2 macros for my raid in order to mark the NPCs (marks show through the Flash Freezes), rather than the ice blocks themselves which is what you would get by trying to click on them all individually.

On 10 man, we found that freeing Missy Flamecuffs first is the best way to go. After each freeze, break her loose and she will free the rest of the NPCs, allowing the raid to focus DPS on Hodir rather than running around letting the other NPCs out. Also, make use of the spotlights, they act similar to the spots in Kara, increasing your attack/cast speed by 100%. If the tank can kite Hodir to the proper position, the raid can stack in the light and burn him quickly.

For this fight, it is absolutely required to have "Projected Textures" checked in the video settings. When you're on the video settings screen, click effects and it's at the very bottom on the right.
Without this enabled, you will not be able to see where the snow is going to fall, resulting in an extremely large amount of raid damage that is going to severely stress the healers. However, this does not need to be enabled for the runes indicating an upcoming Snowdrift before Flash Freeze to be visible.

There are two hard modes for this fight, both of which are timed. Defeating Hodir in under 3:00 minutes, and defeating him in under 6:00 minutes.
I (and the rest of my raid) must be stupid.. what is the reward for defeating him in under six minutes? I would assume at least an extra emblem or something. We defeated him in about 5 minutes twice now and we don't see any indication of seeing a "hard mode".
Does it perhaps apply to 25 man only?

:
Hodir has 3 different hard modes. Three minutes into the fight against Hodir, he destroys one frozen chest. Six minutes in, he destroys the second chest. Nine minutes into the fight he destroys the last chest and enrages. Therefore the two different hard modes are: Keeping all chests intact (Kill Hodir within 3 minutes) and Keeping 2 chests intact (Kill Hodir within 6 minutes). The regular mode is to kill Hodir in 6–9 minutes, only keeping one chest intact.
Nothing about 25man, so I would think if you kill him within 3 minutes you get 3 chests, within 6 minutes you get 2 chests and between 6-9 minutes you only get one chest. So where is my hidden mystery chest? :(

I do not think this is relevant to the topic, but I find Hodir's encounter extremely spectacular, with all these runes on the floor and constant snow and hail falling down.

Judging by the pin-map above, some groups are killing Hodir out in Auriaya's ring. Anyone care to comment on this? Is the idea to concentrate snowdrifts, cozy fires, and starlight into a more constrained area so they're easier to get to (and more likely to stack)?

I as Main Tank was able to withstand his Frozen Blows with only 250 Frost Resist. We successfully downed him in about 6mins. (Full T 7.5 + some Uld gear on). So it is possible without huge amounts of FR. Our healers were 1 Priest, 1 Pally, and 1 Druid.

In order to do Hard Modes you will need approximately:
180,000 DPS (25)
45,000 DPS (10)
That is approximately, assuming 19 DPS and 7 DPS:
9,500 DPS
6,500 DPS
respectively to meet the noted hard modes.
These figures negate the fact that you need to pop flash freezes and any DPS done by the NPCs.
If anyone can approximate the NPC DPS I'll update this again to accomodate for it.

Tanking him on normal by feral druid I noticed one thing: when he turned on his frozen blows i popped BarkSkin and some of my Feral Defence procs made his melee strikes fully absorbed and the frost effect from the buff was not applied to me.
In other words, i suppose if you fully block/absorb his melee attack with Frozen Blows(that's real I think) you will not be damaged by frost, as if you parried/dodged/made him miss you.

I solo tank this as a frost resist capped prot pally.
I have tried moving from beam to beam, so melee can get the buff, this can be problematic because the frost runes are very difficult to see underneath the light beams AND hodir.
I have tried tanking him in a circular motion around the room, this works pretty good, but it can be risky as when he has frozen blows i can easily back into ranged/healers and theyll get hit extremely hard by the frozen blows aoe effect.
Last night i kited him from chest to chest, and we one shotted him. I find that this was the best way to tank the fight, it was extremely easy to avoid frost runes, and when frozen blows was up, and i was about to turn him around to head back to the other side of the room, i just said it in vent so they wouldnt be right in front of me. two healed it, pally/priest. only had 2 ranged dps mage/boomkin, and then 3 rogues and a dk.
Very easy fight, and very simple and fun to tank
Oh, one more thing, i let our holy pally do frost aura because he has aura mastery, and, while im fr capped, everyone else is not, so 240 fr for 10 seconds is excellent for frozen blows, as that is over 50% frost dmg reduction

The description of his Biting Cold debuff states:
Biting Cold - Applies exponentially increasing damage-over-time Frost damage every 1 second to stationary targets.
Any form of movement will reset the number of stacks.
The underlined part is not completely true. Any form of movement will only remove a
single
stack of the debuff. This is an important distinction to make because otherwise you would be able to let the debuff stack to 3 or 4, strafe for a split-second and have the whole thing removed, which is not how it works.
Because movement only removes a single stack you have to be more mindful of the stacks you have on you and have to be sure to not fall behind on keeping the stacks off of you.

the key to this fight, quite simply, are freeing the mages first. Icon them, make sure they are always freed first. they help free the iceblocks with "melt ice" and "toasty fires." melee, watch the "singed" debuff (which ranged will cast on hodir from dpsing near a toasty fire) on Hodir, you will get more benefit from your abilities that do "spell damage." forget all you know about you regular rotation, throw in your spell damage as much as you can on that high stack of "signed." we had a DK just dropping DND, IT, PS, DC and he was doing over 10k ticks with DND. Just imagine what your mages, moonkin, warlocks and elemental shamans can do to him. =)

Here are some summarized tips that I've compiled after getting some experience with this fight. Using this strategy we got the boss down in 3.35 minutes (only because someone released more NPCs than intended). So...
Don’t release all NPCs! Save your time! Tank on the right side! (or left side)

Something I thought is worth mentioning for

Frozen Blows is triggered almost right after Flash Freeze, so during Flash Freeze hotting everyone with Rejuvenation helps tremendously. After I realized the simple fact about Frozen Blows timing, it was a lot easier healing through it, as I was able to time my HoTs correctly.

I found a minor bug with Frozen Blows. If he swings right as he casts it, he can hit for full melee damage, plus the frost damage. He hit me for approximately 14k physical and 18k frost. I had ample health to survive it, but it was quite a nasty surprise to our healers.
