This takes quite some patience to aquire all 40, but i suggest doing all the muisek quests while having this one. And remember to get the quest Zapped Giants when you're on the Mountain Giant Muisek, They have a 100% droprate on these, atleast for me. Plus u make them easier by making them un-elite. Good hunting!

Kill the Hippogryph's or Stagwings, they drop it almost every time. The Skystormers doesnt... Weird

horrible quest... Frayfeather Stagwing's dont drop all the time. i'd only suggest doing this if u'r a decent dps class i.e Mage rogue shammy. otherwise its gonna take u a few hours... its still taking me ages and i'm using a rogue

So I killed the hippogriphs for the first 20 of these, but after those 20 they stopped dropping them. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

We went to the hinterlands to kill the owlbears and every owlbear killed droopped them ..finished the"Testing the Vessel" quest too.

Notice that ALL species of hippogryphs in Feralas drop these fragments. However Skystormers and Patriarchs aren't listed here. Their drop rate for metallic fragments is rather low and it took me quite a while to get 40. Be sure to have much space in your inventory before doing this quest by killing hippos, they drop much thrash with small stack sizes (5 mostly).

i kill 41 Frayfeather Stagwing and i found 40 Metallic Fragments.
also my friends kill them.
drop it is 99% is guess :D.

Im killing savage owlbeasts now and the drop rate is about 90%, these are lvl. 46-47 mobs and very easy to kill for me (44 holy prie)

If you are doing this quest late, the un-Zapped Cliff Giants and Land Walkers (level 48-50 elite) have 100% drop rate on fragments as of this writing.

Very easy for my 57 Warlock solo.

the Frayfeather's have the highest drop %, the coords for them are.. 53,64 down to 56,76 estimated (in the Frayfeather Highlands). gl! (confirmed, the frayfeather skystormers do NOT drop the fragments, only the Hippogryphs, the Stagwings and the patriarch)

Edit: No matter what you see, frayfeather's do not drop Metallic Fragments more then they do in one spot then another, it is simple coincidence, as is everything else that happens like this.

The easiest way to get these is to target the hippogryphs near the northern part of the hippogryph area. The regular Hippogryphs (pink) and any of the royal blue ones anywhere in this area drop the fragments. The only ones that don't are the other pink ones, the Skystormers.

But if you circulate around the northern part of this area, you'll have almost nothing but Hippogryphs and Stagfeathers.

As subject. Cant do zapped giants and get fragments. Done with zap quest and zero dropped.

I did "Zapped Giants" with the quest for these. The "zapper" reduced the giants from Elite to regular, which were far easier to kill.
If you have not done "Zapped Giants" yet, I highly recommend that you get that quest and do it with the one for these. I had a 100% drop rate from the giants around coords 40,28 area.
I already had all the Ministurization Residue so don't know if the giants in this area drop it or not.

Frayfeather Stagwing, Patriarch, Hippogryph is definitely the ones you want to kill, ignore Skystormer.

Save this quest until you get the testing the vessel quest in hinterlands. Then when you have to go back to Ferelas, you can finish up there.

Can use the zapped giant quest to get these too. 100% drop rate unlike it says here.
