yea ive been farming these guys for a while only the dreaming whelps drop them dont care about the adolecent ones unless ur farming small flame sacs. im determinged to get one so im not stopping!!!! (good experience) the dreaming whelps are lv 36 to 38 i think and there in the swamp of sorrows.

This is very time consuming for the pet.

Your first obstacle is other people farming. If you're a shaman this is easily avoidable if you don't mind taking over the area from other players. Simply go into ghost wolf form and run around after them, the minute you get close enough to cast earth shock, change back and cast it. Tagging them is the only thing you're after, from there it's easy. I've had 3 players in this zone and it didn't take long to get it through their heads that I was going to get this pet! :D

If you're a druid, go into cheetah mode and use moonfire. Same tactic as a shaman.

Your second obstacle is remembering to eat and drink as you'll most likely be running to snag the mobs first! :D

I was in stonard looking at these comments as well as the ones on thottbot. I decided to go ahead and go down there and grind out my level which was 36 or 37 at the time. I had about 5 bubbles left.

After 30-50 kills, the tiny whelping dropped for me. It was like 5:00a server time and no one was around so I wasn't contending with anyone. They are great to grind on since you can skin them too. I ended up getting 2-3 greens, a few stacks of leather, and some other vendor loot.

I was really tempted to keep this but sold it for 125g to help pay for my mount.

Good luck everyone. Remember that you could always buy one once you are high enough level if you don't have good luck with these dropping.

Took me 16 months of farming, and thousands of whelps killed, I'd guess. But I finally found it while browsing the HORDE Auction House on my Blood Elven RP twink. ^^

Got it for 150 gold and transfered to my Kaldorei druidess. She's so special. Named her Fae.

i got one on the first kill! :o Though It's har to sell on kor'gal, i cold get 25 g for it as highest.. so if you are playing on korgall, don't farm it to make yourself money!

This is the second emerald whelpling I have gotten. The first one was on my alliance when I came here to simply get 3 small flame sacs. After 6 kills one dropped. I have a friend who farmed for 8 hours a day for a week and nothing...pure luck.

The second was on my horde. I hit level 38 and came here to farm one HOPEFULLY before I dinged level 40 for mount money. It dropped on my second kill. I will keep farming these because Iron spawns around the area and you can get a lot of skins. It's all luck though, be sure to have a good dvd or TV show when farming them as a 70 will kill MUCH faster then they repop.

If you are high level and want to farm these, make sure you have a decent website or something to read. There are very few whelps and you will be tabbing out waiting for respawns a lot :P

GERR! Finding this lil cutie hard to get, for main reason, Dreaming Whelps just dont appear... Almost every respawn is Adolescent. These dreaming whelps seem to be borederline rare spawn... Give a silver dragon and I'd feel soo much more relaxed about the low spawn rate, low spawn + low drop = hairless, old stressed alcoholic! Ok, not old, not quite hairless... and not yet alcoholic but will be by time my Pet drops! >.<

Well... 2800 arrows used on this grinding session... and adveraging around 6 arrows per Whelp, I killed approx 467 Whelps... Ouch! Hours, and hours of Whelp slaying, and nothing but 43 Small Flame Sac, 5g 33s 22c and a large ammo bill! I hate this pet!

Great little green whelp pet dropped for me on the first day of farming! I got pretty lucky though ive had friends who it has taken weeks for them to get one.

Finally found this guy after countless hours and arrows! a tip....even though the adolescent whelps do NOT drop this guy its still a smart idea to kill them. The respawn on the Dreaming whelps is random so if you kill both you double your chances. For me i would say every other 3 were Dreaming. Also if you leave the area to empty your bags or whatever it does not decrease your chances of getting one. good luck guys!

There are 5 whelplings in game for now. 4 of them are drop obtained (the last one is from TBC collectors edition).
Let's order them ascending, depending on lvl of mobs that drop the whelpling:
- Crimson Whelpling 24-27 (I have this one)
- Emerald Whelpling 35-36 (hardest to get bacuse of low number of Dreaming Whelps in SoS)
- Dark Whelpling 41-43 (I have this one)
- Azure Whelpling 50-54 elite (I have this one)

But I don't have to say all! Visit WarcraftPets to see all of them and lots of other non combat pets (companions).

I think that blue post overestimates the rarity of these, as I spent a day farming the whelplings yesterday, i farmed and killed 112 of the assorted dragonkins in azshara yesterday before I finally had one drop for me, took a while largely because of the layout of the camps of dragons.

I farmed 65 whelps in wetlands before a drop, only to have a second one drop about 2 mobs later.

Dark Whelpling dropped for me on the 10th whelp in the badlands, I wouldnt bother with the dustwallow marsh one, its too problematic farming it there, because of wide ranging spawn points.

Still Farming the emerald one at this stage, which is indeed problematic because of the fact that dreaming whelps do not have a static spawn point in SoS, but ill get there :)

Randomly decided to go for this yesterday while hunting for Green Dragonscales in the same area. Got it off aproximatly the 10th kill. I was so happy with this luck that I went back the next day to get one for my boyfriend as well. Took about an hour and a half for the second one to drop.

Level 42 Hunter, so she got some xp out of it too (and lots of skins).

Never really (farmed) to get one, though every time I was

I farmed this little guy for 4 days but I finally got him! I believe I killed between 1,000 and 1,500 whelps total (adolescent and dreaming combined).

Was lucky enough to come across one of these on my 6th kill. Had just recently "discovered" the Whelpling area and checked wowhead to see if anything dropped from them. Sure enough, to my surprise, there was my whelp on that 6th kill.

Plan on spending the new few months farming them for friends and epic flyer.

I was just doing a quest from Booty Bay, collecting dream dust from the whelps. I killed them for over an hour last night, came back today and killed them for about 5 minuets and the pet dropped. I haven't decided what I am going to do with it yet but it was a very cool suprize I've already wanted a whelp for a pet. I didnt even know they dropped. I like that its BoE so I can wait for a while and then if I do decide to use it I can send it to any of my characters.

Because this drop has the smallest number of spawns for any of the whelps, I think this is the best place to use a low-level alt instead of a 70. If you have an appropriate level character you won't have much downtime waiting for spawns since you can't clear the area as fast. Unless you are competing for spawns with somebody else, as long as you can clear the area before respawns, you aren't losing anything.

Don't forget there is two type of whelp in the zone, the "Dreaming Whelp" and "Adolescent Whelp", this last will never drop the whelp and spawn point are shared. On around 12 whelps there is only 4 or 5 "Dreaming Whelp" dropping it. Got mine after the 84th "Dreaming Whelp", not that bad for me. Good luck

Got mine in 4 kills muahahaha!. On a more serious note i have farmed all 4 different colors and it can drop in 4 kills or 4000. Kill the dreaming whelps for it but the other ones share spawns with it so just commit mass murder till you get the pimping pet..

Competition for farming it is pretty tight too - everytime I try there are two other players doing it too. The worst part is that they're just farming it to sell not to keep grrr... I'll just have to try at random times.

Anyone know if they drop rate of whelps has gone up? I'm reading on lots of them that people are getting them right away.

Me... I farmed for 18 hours with no luck over a couple days a few months ago. Then, the other day I head out there and got one on my second lap.

I have officially given up farming this pet. It's been almost 2 weeks now and I am seriously just sick of looking at that swamp.

Good luck to everyone else who has more determination than me and to those that got it in the first 10mins of being there.....I hate you. lol

Just a side note, I went back to the swamp...Unable to pull myself away from the spirit killing pet farming and it paid off. I FINALY got the lil guy!

I swore it would be my last day (15 in total to be exact) and the main reason I went back was due to the Lich King being launched and being in Australia we aren't allowed to purchase it 'till the 14th (Tomorrow) so with little else to do I went and slapped a few whelps around and after 5 hours I finally got him!

Don't let it kill your spirits, you WILL get him....but you'll probably get him the moment you think you wont. ^_^

so much competition even from own guildies lol, but perseverance pays off. I at least put in 6 hours a day since Thursday last week, and i finally finally get it weds. 5 am. Thats like a full week of work. >.< The /tar dreaming macro is really useful. to all you out there still farming let me just say this bugger is definitely worth it, dont give up = )

Well, this pet did not drop on my first kill, nor my 50th, not even my 500th. So far I have killed over 2,500 Dreaming whelps with no drop. Add in the 2,500 Adolescent whelps I have to kill to clear the area, I am sick of this area. But of course I will continue to try. I have WAY too much time invested to stop now. I saw one on AH for 10,000, no way. I have cleared the area so many times and have the routine do so well that newcomers have accused me of being a bot.

Must be the hardest whelp to farm, i have all other 3 except this one i been doing 1hr grind every day since monday good idea to go here when you are waiting on a kara grp like somone metion it you never know you might get lucky, nothing so far for me im not going to give up yet though i want it so bad.

So good to have a mage also because you can just port to stonard whenever you want to and its less of a travel :D.

Leveling up, I have to say all of you farming this whelp are inconsiderate #$%^&*!s. There's a quest to kill the Dreaming Whelps (Dream Dust in the Swamp) and it's a pain in the ass trying to wrest kills away from a max-level epic mount farmer that doesn't care that because he's farming my quest is now going to take hours to complete.

I got this little guy after about 3 1/2 good solid hours of farming. I started with a level 38 hunter (w/skinning of course). I ended up getting a level and a half and more leather than I knew what to do with. BUT he dropped for me! Now to sell or keep...

Hi guys and girls. Just thought that you'd like to know that this minipet FINALLY dropped for me...! Funnily enough, a couple of minutes after I "learned" the spell, and was standing in the swamp admiring her, a 70 rocked up and said "AS IF YOU'D USE IT!" hahaha. Seems some people are more interested in Gold than anything else.

Guess what, I decided that I must be on a roll, so cruised down to Wetlands and chased the Tiny Crimson Whelpling too. It dropped for me after about 30 kills!

And I'm currently flying to Badlands to see if I can complete the Trifecta...

EDIT: Must have been my night, because I got the Dark Whelpling within about 20 minutes too... :-D

I have to agree with the, "you'll get it when your not expecting it" I was waiting for my husband to bring the car back and thought I would give it one more try while I waited, being that I have farmed it for about 19 hours yesterday straight and a few the night before. I was on my last lap before getting my shoes on, and he dropped while I was getting ready to leave. I am still in shock. I have all 4 now, thanks to a ton of farming the last few days. Azure and emerald whelps for me were definetly the hardest of all. The other two dropped within 2 hours of steady farming. Now I'm going to get my main out here and get her some whelps! with a little break first though, my butt hurts from sitting so long, lol. Good luck to you all, stick with it and yes, he just might drop when you least expect it. He's wicked cute:)

Farmed this little dude for, oh I dunno how many days or hours but I can tell you that I got him on the 653rd kill of the Dreaming Whelps....about the same about of the Adolescents.

Those that got it on the 80th kill or whatever? You are indeed lucky that some schmuck like me did the kills for you prior (and walked away from it totally deflated) so that it would drop for you so soon lol

I have total sympathy for anyone who has a bee in their bonnet about farming this pet.

True but there's a higher chance of having it drop during 100 hours of grinding than getting it in just 1 minute of grinding, and the probability is actually calculable. For example in the formula you use that gets you 72 whelp kills an hour, the chance of it dropping during that hour is 7%. Grinding it for 5 hours gives you a 30% chance. Grinding it for 48 hours gives you a 97% chance.

My general grinding idea was to kill all the mobs... they have about 1-2 minute respawn I think - and in that time I played some guitar hero ;)

Crimson Whelping took me 2 days and around 900 kills to get, this one took me about 10 minutes and 6 kills to get....hooray for being truly random!

The past month, I got the Azure Whelp, the Crimson Whelp and the Dark Whelp. This is how I did it.

For well over a week for about 3 hours a day, I was farming the Crimson Whelp in the Wetlands with no luck. I decided to go to Azshara to try for the Azure and got it in a half hour. Go figure. So then, I decided to go back and try for the Crimson. I farmed for another 3 hours - nothing. The next day, I went back and got it within 10 minutes from a Red Whelpling. Then, I decided to try for the Dark Whelp. This one took me almost 2 weeks to get. Again, I was at it for about 3 hours a day. Eventually, I gave up for a few days. Went back, got it on the very first kill - no lie. All 3 places are one big circle. I would recommend getting 2 or 3 together to make it a little faster. I used 2 of my characters to farm these, my 72 mage and my 56 rogue. Just have patience, these farms will get frustrating!

-Crimson Whelp drops from Red, Crimson or Flamesnorting Whelplings in Wetlands - lvl 23-27
-Dark Whelp drops from the Scalding Whelplings in the Badlands - lvl 41-43, or Searing Whelplings in Duskwallow Marsh - lvl 39-40
-Azure Whelp drops from Draconic Magelord, Blue Scalebane, Draconic Mageweaver and Blue Dragonspawn in Azshara - all lvl 50-54 elite
-Emerald drops from the Dreaming Whelplings in Swamp of Sorrows - lvl 35-36

I've been after this thing for 12 hours now, give or take 10 minutes. The only thing I can say is, this is an insane grind. Its not for those who would give up easy, because, well, its not short or easy, at all.

I'm watching shows while I do this, because theres so much downtime, and so I don't have to go around looking for respawns, I have my hunter alt doing the killing with track Dragonkin on..Its invaluable.

Goodluck to all you hunters, may patience be with you..Its almost not with me.

Edit: At just short of the 15 hour mark, I got it. I couldn't believe it when it dropped, I thought I was going crazy..But stay with it and it has to drop..Some are just lucky and get it in less than 1,000 kills.

A few weeks ago I decided that I just absolutely had to have one of these as a pet. I had decent luck with the crimson whelpling so I was optimistic that I would get one of these if I just kept at it. I spent about a total of 30 hours in SOS with no luck. Eventually, I couldn't take any more and decided to take a break from farming this little guy for awhile. A few days later, I was in EPL helping my boyfriend farm for his baron mount. Randomly killed a few slimes out near Light's Hope while waiting for him, and, still cannot believe this, a disgusting oozeling dropped! Basically, moral of the story is, if you are frustrated about your whelpling, don't sweat it! You may not get him right away, or you may not get him at all, but chances are you will get something just as cool! :)

(Oh and by the way, I did get my emerald whelpling shortly thereafter! My beau felt bad I had spent so much time farming, so he secretly posted on our realm forums, saying he was trying to buy one. Someone from the opposing faction contacted him about two days later, and he was able to buy it from the neutral AH. I am so glad I never have to spend another hour in that swamp again!)

653 kills, but I got it. Now I have all four whelplings! *glee for a dragon nut*

Had to deal with at least twelve other farmers while doing it, but managed to by sheer stubbornness and the "/tar Dreaming" macro. I'm lucky it's a PVE realm, else things would have gotten quite nasty.

I had just spent the entire night farming for the Azure Whelpling, stopping only once an hour to try and get that elusive candy bag for the 'Love is in the Air' event. I decided to give this guy a try after the Azure had dropped, and although I was disappointed to see an opposing faction 80 pally already farming the place I was able to get a kill in on two dreamers while he stood around. I couldn't believe what I saw had dropped on the second hit.

This is just a lesson to not stand around too idly if you're intent on farming these guys since there are so few, as well as to take a chance as you might be rewarded for it. :p I don't know if my drop would have been the same thing for him, but I do feel bad for the pally. After farming all night as well as over past days for the Azure Whelpling, however, I was of course glad for the opportunity. It was a nice treat for once!

Still trying to farm it to this day and I'll continue to farm it until i get one. The crimson whelp took me 20 hours in all of farming. The azure was close to 7 hours of farming. This is the only whelpling I have never seen on AH, and I would assume that if they did go up they would cost a fortune. According to Warcraftpets:
Tiny Emerald Whelplings: May now (very rarely) drop from Adolescent Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows.
So if you want this pet and are willing to farm for it, try after Patch 3.1.0, since killing those Adolescent Whelps will not just be so more Dreaming Whelps spawn.

I was just reading through the PTR 3.1.0 Patch Notes, and found this little beauty: Tiny Emerald Whelplings: May now (very rarely) drop from Adolescent Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows. This means that it is no longer a waste of time to clear out those whelps!

Ok guys i'm kinda new to wow and i'm a 64 mage got my crimson after an hour and probly 300 kills and sold it for 3600g on ah worth it for sure..i went to swamp of sorrows for four hours one night nothing 2 hours the next night nothing and an hour a day for the next 10 days and it motha truckin dropped tonight and i made an account to just tell everyone to hang in there it almost seems impossible for the last half and i think at a few points i was half way crazy but on my realm they sell for 5000g on a.h. it drops just as much as other whelps but the mob is so so so small it is very very very rare i have mine up for 6700bid and 7200buyout right now on the booty bay ah right now and it has a good chance of selling... I have tried, off and on, for years to get this whelpling. It's a rite of passage for my characters to go into that godforsaken swamp and hunt whelps for a while, and not once has it dropped in all the years I've been trying.

Lately, I kicked into hardcore mode to try and get this whelpling. So far, no luck. I killed upwards of 250 dreaming whelps, and as many adoloscent whelps (they were in my way) on my main. Nothing. I then switched over to my hunter for ease of tracking, and have spent every spare moment I can for the past four days, killing whelps.

Edited one last time.
Grand total: 1457 dreaming whelps fell before me, and just as many adolescent whelps, before they coughed up the object of my desire.
Also several bagfuls of greens, an enchanting pattern (lesser beastslayer), a leatherworking pattern (dusky leather leggings), jade, citrine...

May I never see that swamp again except when riding through at top speed.

This beauty just dropped for me about 30 minutes ago. While using the in-game timer I had 11 hours 15 minutes 1 second devoted to this thing. I have killed approximately 820 whelps. All I can say to those who want this pet is, you'll get it eventually.

for me farming wasnt to bad for the most part.

azure: 45 mins
crimson: 3 hours 30 mins
dark: 8-10 hours
emerald: 5 hours, still havent got yet
oozling: 9-12 hours
macaw: 8 hours, still havent got yet

i only need 4 more pets for my 75 pet acheivement.

they also will be making it easier to farm the tiny by making adolencent ones drop it patch 3.1. not sure if they are gonna be upping drop rate on the parrot in botty bay thought. i hope they do

Azure: 2 drops in sub 30minutes
Crimson: 1 drop in sub 1hour
Dark: 1drop in sub 30 minutes
Emerald: 8-10 hours (heavily farmed, limited spawn(Adolescent whelps will have equal chance to drop it as of 3.1))
Oozeling: 6-8 hours
macaw: haven't tried yet, waiting to farm it when i destroy my bb rep 2 birds 1 stone

I almost hate to post this, and I expect a bunch of downgrading. But as I was doing the dream dust quest, I ran over here, and the whelpling dropped on my very first kill. I sat there with the window open, thinking 'do I want to equip it, or sell it'. But considering these go for over 5k on my server..... its getting sold.

This pet may just be the hardest one to obtain in the game, however if you are determined you will get it. For four days i farmed for about 4 hours. roughly around 1550 whelps, slighty less than half that were dreaming ones. I figured an actual number might help rather than seeing people post "i found one right away!" Hope it helps

I'm an 80 NE warrior, I farmed this for about 10 hours yesterday, and I'm just starting today... been going for maybe an hour. I'm beginning to think this is a waste of time. I've had no competition or anything, it just will not drop. I'm thinking, if it's a 7% chance per hour- 7% x 11 hours = 77% chance- shouldn't that mean that I should have gotten it already? Anyway, if anyone has any tips or anything, please let me know.

Day 1- 10 hours
Day 2- 8.5 hours (as of now)
Day 3- 15 minutes into farming again, it dropped. I was in shock.

Keep farming, everyone! If you've been going all day and it's driving you crazy, seriously just take a break. I wish I would have, because it will drop eventually.

Going to try and update this... as it stands now... I'm at 4 days farming, 19 hours 40 minutes and no drop.

1st day - 5 hours
2nd day - 4 Hours
3 days - 10 hours
4th day (Currently) - 1 hours 40 minutes.

My current count is 1,057 Dreaming Whelps. I can't explain how large my adolescent spawns have been.

*Update* 3 hours and 13 mins later.

Bringing my 4th day total to just about 6 hours. After my 252nd kill, the whelp dropped.

4 days (26 hours) 1,200 whelps later... it's mine.

Happy Hunting and be patient, for those willing to farm it. It will drop!

Been farming for about a week and last night got 2 of these little guys! I couldn't believe it. One dropped from a Dreaming Whelp and the other from a Adolescent Whelp. They dropped about 10 minutes apart. I farmed for hours a day for around 5 days or so. I have no idea how many whelps I killed but it was alot. So I kept one and put the other on the AH. Whoohoo!

As of 3.1 the Adolescent Whelp's drop it. Very nice considering pre 3.1 I farmed for 2 days and killed 2000 of each kind without getting a single drop.

Fun story, I'm sure you dont want to hear this, but I need to tell it anyway!

I hear of a friend that apparently whelpling farming is good money. I ask him which, and he tells me Crimsons are good, but he asks me not to farm those because he is currently farming them. So instead, I go to swamp of sorrows to farm some there. I find a lvl 45 orc hunter, following the same pattern over and over, killing all the whelps, and if you attacked his mob before he attacked it, his pet would aggro you and you would force him into PvP, allowing you to kill him.

I kill 4 dragons, and then I find the orc taking my dragons, so I manage to make him attack me so I could attack him. I kill 7 dragons, and then the orc comes back. He kills some dragons, #$%^ing me off, so I manage to get him to attack me again, so he would be PvP flagged. For doing this I had to kill a whelpling, and when I check that whelpling's loot I find it to have...

Well you guess it ^^. Guess I got rewarded by Blizz for taking care of goldfarmers :P?

Edit: 5hours and 30mins later I got another one. Drop rate increased?

I can tell this is so much easier now that the Adolescents drop it too. I got lucky, and only farmed for about 3 hours to get it. Yippy for me. I will say that the spawn was nearly perfect to keep pace with my 39 hunter I was using. Pretty nice xp (had full rest xp, former twink I finally decided to level).

I really recommend you take a character around their level and kill them. Made this a super easy grind, as I was also getting xp for it. They spawn fast at that level (since you can't one shot).

Anyway, made it super easy for me to grind. Plus, since the respawn isnt fast, it was just kill and wait with my level 64.

Farmed my first whelp for 3 days. found an adolescent whelp that i forgot to look and was over the moon when i got my whelp. farmed my second one today. dropped after 30 kills from the dreaming whelp, rather lucky :)

Got this guy after two days of farming, maybe 5 hours spent. I was really lucky, especially considering I have little patience. >< Helps imo if you have a competitor, because it makes you focus more on getting the mob. Sure, you might not get every mob, but it sure does help with the monotony.

I have a friend who's a pet fanatic. I sold it to her at a very large discount (1kg when it sells for 2-3kg on AH). Tomorrow, I go farm Badlands for the Dark one.

Literally killed about 20 mobs after finishing Sunken Temple, just to see if it'd drop. First round of spawns, nothing. Minimized, checked the drop rate here on Wowhead. Sounded low, but by the time I alt+tab'd to back to the game the spawns were up again. Cleared the area, was shocked to find it.

Started farming on 5/18. I put in about 15 or so hours and easily killed well over 1000 of them. I didn't count them, but I made about 18 gold just farming. The most I got was around 2 silver and the minimum copper was around 35 - do the math. It finally dropped this morning and what a relief it was! Like many have said before, dont give up, it will drop.

Whenever I feel like farming these guys I'll head there and if there's someone there already, I'll leave or log out for later (Unless it's an opposing faction member that I can kill :) ). I expect the same in return, yeah i know, there's no rules in farming, but why can't we have some form of respect for someone who has been there farming for hours? I have farmed 2 of these in the time I've played WoW, unfortunately I deleted my original character who had this and I'm trying to get another for me( I gave my 2nd to my boyfriend), but I always run into other alliance who won't go away! Not to mention have better ranged attacks to tag them! It's so frustrating. I guess the better option is to spend the time gathering up gold to buy on off AH?

Ive farmed these things for probably 7-8 hrs total now, ugh lol. I'm new to Wow ,and this is my first experience farming like this lol. Got a Dark whelpling from killing the whelps for the quest in Dustwallow marsh, so i figured i'd try and collect the set, or maybe sell them, but I can tell you whenever i get this green one, there's no way Im selling it after this grind lol.

19:00 - 5:00 No pet
Next day 13:00 - 4:23 i got the pet... I killed 2047 mob and finally got it.

My tip if some1 read this. Kill all mob and after go and read some news or do something until the 5 min respawn time. I think this is the best and easiest way.

While the killing i got 1 blue (which drop rate 0.00%) and 28 green (drop rate 0.01%) so i was a bit angry about those drop but the pet not.

Good luck every1, i think this pet is maybe the hardest but you will need alot of time for the farm, cuz of 5 min respawn time i think alot, and sometimes make you angry about waiting.

These things are going for 400g on my server (Saurfang EU) and nobody is buying.

My server is really odd with things like that.

I've managed to get all 4 whelplings , Crimson, Azure, Emerald and Dark for just under 1000g.

I just started farming these tonight on my 33 NE warrior on Windrunner. Soon as I started I had competition from Jurntok, a horde hunter. He was a skull to me and with his higher level and aspect of the pack on, he was claiming a majority of the whelps. After about 20 kills of my own whelps I saw a whelp nearby. I start racing to it but just a split second before I was in range to charge it, Jurntok's pet charged it first. However, it still registered me hitting charge, sent me into the fray as well and some how tagged the whelp to me anyway. And as I went to loot, to my joyous surprise, I looted a tiny emerald whelping. So thank you Jurntok for helping me acquire an emerald whelping. :-D

Got my second one today after killing quit a few mobs. Forgot to check which whelpling it was that dropped it.

Mine dropped from Adolescent whelp number 933. I'd also killed about 1050 dreaming whelps in that time.
I used the jaguars (2 per loop) to keep a count of how many I'd done, and it worked out at about 125 circuits.

Also got 4 blues, many greens, and 2 x 12 slot bags.

Two Tips so you don't get bored of killing those mobs : (which I tried and worked for me)

1.Every time you kill a mob close your eyes then Shift-loot it and open your eyes,result: suspense at every mob you kill so you don't get bored,some time lost and so other mobs can respawn while you are wishing for the pet (when your eyes are closed) !

2.When ALL your CDs are up use them ALL at once and kill the mobs because that will make you think that because you used all your CDs it will drop(or not ofc :P)

I just had this little thing drop, finally.

I have quite literally carried out mass genocide of the whelping race in the Swamp, I think the RSPCA may be knocking at my door any minute now. On a serious note, I killed just short of 2000, I do believe.

I then proceeded to put it right into the mail to someone for free.. I think they call it crazy. Ah well, Hyacinth Macaw next, god help me.

Finally got mine today!

I'd been farming this little guy on and off for weeks (Hour here, hour there, oh hey let me stop by omw to kara, etc), WIth no luck. I considered farming an easier whelp just to trade for it. Decided to farm one last time anyway and got it, which was a great pick me up after having an absolutely lousy day(Funnily enough, I got my crimson whelp on another horrible day. I think blizz likes giving me little pick me ups XD). Took about an hour into the session, so I had probably only killed about 150. The macro listed before is very useful! Just keep trying, cause you never know!

A week ago I farmed for the Crimson Whelpling (got it in 30-40 mins) and today I decided to go for this one.
I knew that it was the most difficult to get, due to less mobs to kill and possible competition.. but anyway I started farming..

As I come to the place I found a level 42 dwarf hunter farming the area and after a while he disappeared.. later on another ally guy came but I think I scared him off since I was monopolizing the place (went there with my lv.58 DK to just make things more easy).

Anyway, these are the info about my farming, all done today:

first farming: 40 mins (didn't have MobInfo for tracking)... no pet
second farming: 30 mins (same as above)... no pet
third: 23 mins... (got MobInfo) killed 10 Dreaming Whelps, 7 Adolescent Whelps, pet dropped off a Dreaming Whelp.

Funny thing, just before getting the pet I was complaining in guild chat about the item that wasn't dropping at all..

Since my main (prot warrior) was 8 pets away from 75 and the achievment, I decided to go after the whelps and other rare drop pets. This is how I've done so far:

Blue: Bought off of AH for 800g since it was cheap (I am on a very expensive server it seems)
Crimson: 5 hours of farming and finally dropped from a crimson whelp (On AH for 1700g)
Dark: Roughly 220something mobs into my second day and it dropped in the Badlands (by far the best place to farm)
Green: Still farming, been out in swamp of sorrows for about 3 hours now. (On AH for 4000g)

While farming this pet I decided to station another toon in EPL to farm for the oozling. After clearing all of the whelps I just log on and kill slimes for a few minutes while they respawn and then log back on to the whelp farmer.

Just to be annoying, I was passing by on one of those travel quests and decided to do Dream Dust in the Swamp while I was in SoS anyway.. While collecting the 10 Speck fo Dream Dust, this baby popped.. I mailed it to a collector friend of mine, asking if he had that one already, and judging by the ecstatic replies he didnt.. So 5-10 minutes to drop it, your turn now, hehe..

So you guys are probably going to hate me... I decided about an hour ago to farm this pet. Came on here, read everything, thought it was a long shot, but wanted to try anyways. Got to the farming area, killed about six whelps, then switched to an alt to check on the Black Tabby spawn, and came right back. I killed four more whelps, and looked down at my whispers.... and there it was in my log! Now, I'm not someone with good luck, I tend to roll 2's and 14's a LOT more often than not. But I tried anyways, and it was totally unexpected. He's still sitting in my bags at the moment because I'm not sure if I want to keep him or sell him, they usually go for around 4k gold on my server... lol.

I hate the ppl who use bots to farm for this, it &*!@es me off, ppl work hard for it, grinding weeks for and finally get it, while someone else just doesn't wanna do the work and lets a bot do it for him, they really need to do something about those bots.

I farm these sporadically on my characters. I've only ever found one, though. It was on my Paladin. I was traveling to Blasted Lands, and on a whim, I stopped and killed 5 Dreaming Whelps (this was before the patch that put the pet on the drop table of the Adolescent Whelps). I was just messing around and after I killed the 5th Dreaming Whelp, I mounted and started on my way. Then I looked at my chat log and read that I had looted a Tiny Emerald Whelpling. "No way!" I had to open my bag and see it in my inventory to believe it. I had looted it on the 5th kill and hadn't even noticed it until I was down the road!

But this is far from easy to farm this because I've killed a lot of these little buggers before and since that day and I have yet to have a second one drop for me. I'm actually sitting in the swamp on my Druid right now waiting for respawns.

The one I looted on my Paladin sold for almost 4,000g.

I got mine after exactly 1 hour, 13 minutes. I was leaving the area because i was tired of trying and one spawned right infront of me and ofcourse, it dropped it. I dont know how many i killed, but it must have been alot. lol. Goodluck to everyone who is trying to get one. I got really lucky on this one. I went to go level weapon skill so i figured why not just whack at whelplings from 1-300 for my alt.....at about 240 weapon skill i got one. I have been playing since very beginning of wow....and off and on again farmed these damn things. So my advice go there for some other reason like weapon skill-ups so you will be pleasantly surprised when this drops....

After reading how rare this whelpling can drop I decided to buy it for 530g in the AH. I was disappointed! I expected a "tiny" emerald whelpling. He is the same size as the azure whelpling. Another thing I noticed was once I learned him he was no longer called a "tiny emerald whelpling" he was now an "emerald whelpling". Glad I didn't spend days farming this critter.

I've been doing this for 3 days now.

First day - 10 hours.
Second day - 8 hours.
Third day - 2 hours (So far.)

And I must say, it is mind numbing.

I'm an 80 mage. So I just run around, arcane barrage, and continue.

i guess my two cents to add is this: If you're honestly feeling low after it not dropping (I know I do right now.) start working on your unarmed skill, your daggers, etc. I have been. I've decided i'd atleast get my weapon skills up while i'm here.

Anyways. I've grinded alot. I haven't gotten it. I might gouge my own eyes out. ^^

Also, if someone asks if they can complete the quest "Dream Dust in the Swamp" ignore them, because if that person gets the drop while doing the quest, you're gonna be pretty.. Annoyed.

Only if you completely misunderstand how random number generators work. They aren't getting "your" drop -- odds are only 1 in 1000 you would have gotten a whelpling if you had killed the same whelp. If they get the drop doing the quest, you should be happy for them, but you shouldn't feel like you've been denied something...

Been craving it since classic.. spend hours and hours grinding it
It took me 38-39 as a paladin to get two of those puppies today! I guess I'm lucky, or unlucky that it took so much time.

Tips? Level your low alts there. Kill any of the opposite faction if it comes near, as when I got my first one there were 2 other ally paladins there that got owned by my axe, more than a few times.

The fact that really makes me mad, is that when i was farming it the whelp dropped for me twink item Tigerstrike mantle instead of tiny emerald whelpling, and the mantle has lower drop rate than whelpling! This is the second time it happens to me, previously when i was farming dark whelpling instead of it i got ultra rare epic twink weapon Nightblade This is really not fair :(

Yeeees, finally it dropped, in second day of farming :D not so bad I think. I went to eat my dinner, and when I was back it dropped from third whelp i killed, I couldn't believe it :D I was so excited that I forgot to look if it was dreaming or adolescent :( I jumped up from my seat, run and cry to my mom "I just got Emerald whelpling!" she didn't know what I was talking about :P Then I called my boyfriend and told him about it, he was very happy for me and congratulated :D I'm still so excited, this cute whelp is my firs pet drop ever :D Wish you all good luck in getting it :)

I finally got this pet 5 minutes ago.
I killed over 300 whelps over the past 4 days, all the while competing with a hunter bot. It got to the point where I had to get my boyfriend to come and camp her on his horde character just so I could get a few kills. Logged in today, tried my hand at the crimson and dark whelps, after giving up on those decided dejectedly to try this one again. And lo and behold, it dropped!
Honestly, all that kept me alive was reading people's comments over and over again, so don't give up!

hard to get... got mine from dreaming whelp dont give up took me a day and some more to get but its worth it its cute and tiny and fly wat else do u want? u also WORKED for it so it can b ur FAVORITE pet. heres an idea, when ur waiting for spawn find a cliff or the lil cave and bridge or the crooked standing house thing go in settle down make a fire and relax...u get tense when someone else is there but just try to discourage them by killing faster. thats all the advice that i can think of....good luck!

grr... my luck just sucks with these guys... im farmin them on and off whenever im on my hunter for about a week and a half, still nothing... blizzard needs to improve the respawn on the whelps that drop this to, i keep clearing them all

Funny thing. I was farming for this pet for good 8 months (with 6 months break from WoW) killing 100-150 whelps per day (after patch 3.1 more since adolescent also drop it) and finally got mine after over 4k kills. Of course as a true pet collector i used it immediately. But this evening i decided, for fun and from habit, kill few more whelps and I got next pet from my 5th kill. So have faith - there is sometimes justice on this world :).

Actually, the part about where loot is determined at spawn while entirely possible from a programming aspect, it is not correct here. It is a common misconception and I hear it a lot, however; if you ask someone who knows how client/server communication works they will tell you this is not the best of ways to program. If loot is determined at time of kill of the mob. It takes less processing power on the server end as it doesn't have to hold that data on the millions of random monsters that may or may not be killed. It then also doesn't have to recalculate at the time of a respawn what loot would be dropped for a mob that may never again be killed. Thirdly, if loot was calculated on a monster when it spawned it would be then possible to data mine that information. By simply pulling the information off a particular mob a person could see the loot before it is killed. Allowing people with the resources to do so the ability to make random drops negligible. If loot is calculated at the time of kill only those monsters which are killed have to have loot tables generated by the server. This saves the server thousands of processes a minute and the loot data can be stored locally on the client instead. Which leaves the server open to do more important tasks.

Evidence that the loot is determined at the time of kill can be found in many loot quests. Practically any quest that requires you to kill a mob and loot an item off of it will have a 1 in x drop for that quest item be it 1 in 1, 1 in 2, 1 in 3, or even 1 in 10. Granted this is not all quests of this type, only a majority. With these quests, the item will drop every x mob you kill at a static rate. So a quest needs you to get 10 of a particular quest item and has a 1 in 3 chance to drop. This means every third kill you will get the drop you need for the quest. If the loot for the mob was determined at the time of spawn. The server would have to calculate how many mobs that could drop the loot were spawned. How many of those had the drop already, then calculate if the difference was that 1 in 3. Just to determine if the mob had the quest item or not. This would then make it completely possible for a player to kill an endless number of monsters and never get the items he needs for the quests. Just because all the mobs that will have the items has spawned and he's killing respawns that never will have the item. If loot it determined at kill, the client can keep an internal counter on the number of kills of the particular monster. Then tell the server that number since the last item was dropped and if the player is on the correct quest. To which the server just simply forces the item onto the loot list at the appropriate number of kills.

I did six days of farming for this for several hours at a time. Of all the farming I've done this really wasn't so bad. The area is small and after a few minutes you pick up a pattern to follow. I really didn't notice the time go by while chatting and listening to music. Great pet, giving it as a gift. Hardest of the whelps to get.

So I played on Skullcrusher for about a year and a half initially whenever I began WoWing in mid-2005 and then when one of my best friends that got me into the game, quit, I moved to Rexxar and began anew. I created a hunter, and this was even before the first xpac, and during the quest to kill the whelps in the swamp, it dropped on my 6th or 7th kill. Now, this was before pets and mounts and such were any sort of a big deal (and before dailies and such, i.e. - before free-flowing gold came into play), so it languished on the AH for like 2-3 weeks without selling, I wanted my 40 mount which was still expensive at the time, so I finally sold him for like 100g to someone in Trade.

Flash forward to today where pets are abundant, and are sold for a few thousand gold sometimes - at least on my server - and gold is A LOT easier to come by. This one, the Crimson and the Dark Whelps are often sold for around 1200-1500g on my server, and I definitely have the money for them, but now that there's a portal to Blasted Lands handy everytime I zone in to Org, if I'm heading that way anyway I'll take a quick trip to the swamp to clear out the greenies there. I think I've done maybe 5 or 6 trips for a full clear, not hoping for much. So today I stop by on my way to do the BB King achievement being that we got our guns today. Lo and behold, again I got a whelp on the 6th or 7th kill! This time, though, I'm keeping him! I've had an unbelievable streak of luck this week, having 2 BoE Epic patterns (BC, but still) drop, selling one for 500g, a BoE Blue JC Cut drop and selling that for 200g, and getting lucky on finding 6 of the Raptor n/c pets as well as while training my fishing up, getting the Sea Turtle mount as a drop in Howling Fjord!

I farmed for the Tiny Emerald Whelpling and in about 20 minutes (3-4 respawns) it dropped from an Adolescent Whelp not a Dreaming Whelp....So, it can drop from any one of those whelplings in Swamp of Sorrows, which are located in Itharius's Cave area.

I must be one of the most unlucky people trying to farm this pet. I've managed to get the rest of the dragon pets, but this one eludes me. Over the past 2.5 weeks I've killed ~5500 of the whelps with no pet drop. (3117 confirmed since I installed Bunny Hunter). As an 80 Hunter I've been averaging about 115 kills/hr.

I have gotten plenty of BoE blues that have sold for a fair amount to the L39 twinks. Necromancer Leggings sold for 275g within 30 minutes of posting to the AH, most others move for 100-125g. Large Fangs, Jade, enchanting mats (from all the greens) and the leather are also very good sellers.

At least you can always queue up for a random Heroic instance or a Battleground to break the monotony.

Got bloody lucky myself on this one today doing the quest: Nothing But The Truth. First whelp killed (an Adolescent Whelp) and I got the whelpling. It took 4 more kills to get the quest drop than this pet.

I don't really care for pets myself, nor do I care about the pet achievements, so this will be going to the AH to help supply the baby hunter with the gold for her 225 riding.

forgot all about this... it took a couple of days on the AH to sell, but it finally sold for 1400g, which took a nice chunk off what I needed to collect for that character's 300 riding skill as well as more than paid for her 225 riding since that was cut down to 250g recently (less faction discount cost her 212g50s in the end)

Alright, so I've been farming for about 20min now and I already got a rotation down.

If your shadow priest with Shadow Word: Death, and skinning, it makes it really easy. Use the macro that Ultenth posted, and as soon as you find a whelp of either dreaming or Adolescent, shadow word death it, skin it then afterwards macro spam again to find another, shadow word death it, skin, repeat.

It makes it go quickly, and after you've cleared the area, go check your mail off WoW or reply to an im, and before you know it, the whelps will all be respawned. :) I hope this helps someone! :D

I set off on a mission when I tried to get this whelping. by then I have 2 out of 4. The first two were simple of enough. Crimson in ten minutes and Dark in 20 minutes. When I came to SoS, there was already one other person ther farming, I assume, for the same target. We were both going at it for over a hour, and nothing turned up. I finally decided to come back later, when I figured the Swamp would be cleared.

I came back with no competition and on my third rotation, ten minutes, I got the whelping. My friends say I am extremely lucky because I got all four of the whelpings over a 2 hour period. I'm not completely sure, but I believe if you have the place to yourself, it's more likely the whelping will drop. Or I'm just luck. Who knows.

got mine after 3-4 days of casual farming, play some music, enter BGs, and gank the alliance that comes along and time flies :D dropped a few greens worth 70 silver to a gold, skinners will make quite a bit too, overall not as bad as everyone makes it out to be ^^

It won't, necessarily.

It's a nice sentiment, but alas, for some people it never ever will. That's just statistics. I've wasted so much of my life trying to get these, I finally decided to cut my losses. Thousands and thousands of whelps have died, and I think I should have spent my time doing yoga instead.

...of course, I just switched to black and red whelps. >.> They have not dropped for me either, been farming 3 weeks.

got 2 of these ,2 hours , one from adolescent second from dream , ..than 3,5k kills whelps in blasted /12,5hour/ without drop , same like wetlands ,2 days of trying ,
then i hire hunter, drops for him after one hour:/ ..and i was paying 3k ,damn hunter:D

Anyone know if the drop rates have changed? I've been farming this little guy for months, and still no luck. Usually I spend an hour farming for about 3 days a week. It seems people have more luck farming all at once for a large chunk of time =/

Just dropped for me while doing the quest for dream dust. I have tried to farm this pet for a while, ive played this game for about 4 years. I have about 9 lvl 80 toons and this is the first time I have ever had one of these pets drop. That being said you can see just how rare of a drop this thing is.

Just wanted to add my 2 sense for what its worth...

I went farming this little guy cause i'm a bit pet crazy, but then anyone who does farm this either is as well or is gold crazy lol

i guess i'm one of the lucky ones, my first day out to farm i only spent a couple hours and today after only about 3 hours i made the drop...

if i can add anything to this farming, i really suggest unequiping your weapon, putting your pet/demon on passive and unarming it, for 2 reasons:

1, you can up your Unarmned skill, mine reached 331 from 0 while doing this
2, it slows down your kills so you dont have to wait on respawns :)

alright well, good luck to you on your own hunting trip and i'm off to take on the next welpling :D

not that id buy it, but there's usually one up in the AH on dentarg for 8-9k. i put in about 6-7 hours on this whelp. cleared the place loads of times...sux for an 80 there ain't many whelps and there's some downtime, but in the end i got him. I personally think he's the coolest looking of the whelps. Good luck to the rest of yas!

Maybe this will help people who seem to get frustrated.

.1% of people will get it their first kill
25% of people will get it by their 300th kill
63% of people will get it by their 1000th kill
86% of people will get it by their 2000th kill
99% of people will have it by their 3000th kill

BUT THERES STILL THAT 1% OF PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT HAVE AFTER 3000 KILLS!
(You will never reach 100% chance, it is technically possible for one to never ever drop, albeit absurdly unlikely)

So dont fret the lucky guys who get it within the first 30 min, just be happy your not in that last 1%!

And if you get worried that you might be in that last 1%, just remember you have a 1% chance to be that 1% :-p

So hopefully now you know exactly how much to worry and when to worry.

These stats served me very well, and i have got 3 of these, 2 black 1 green. Knowing exactly when to expect the drop helps ease the stress quite a bit.

If you are after money skin them while you farm for the pet and try to get the recipie for green whelp armor they sell for like 5-10g going to farm the skins tomorrow, hope I'll get lucky and get a whelp pet aswell.

Tiny Emerald Whelpling dropped for me after about 2.5 hours of straight farming. I literally killed everything in the area in those 2.5 hours. I have read how hard it has been for others to have this drop for them, so for 2.5 hours of farming i actually feel very lucky. As simple as it might sound, the only thing i did to stay motivated was to just keep thinking that each dreaming whelp could be it, and for some reason i was never discouraged. I dont really care too much about percentage and luck because ive always considered myself very unlucky. I just felt that my effort in trying to get one will eventually pay off. If not tonight, then the next night, or the night after that one. Once I got it, I gave it to my friend who was very happy. To me, that made it worth it.

I see the dark whelps in the AH every so often on my server. The crimson whelps not that often. And the emerald whelps hardly ever. So it was very rewarding to have it drop and actually see it for myself, and to know that it took some work to get it for a friend. I dont think it would have been the same if i had just gotten it on the AH.

So for everyone out there... stick with it.

I've had a dark whelpling for a while now and today (7 april 2006) I got my disgusting oozeling.

Tips if you don't wanna be bored while grinding, is to have a good guild with a funny guild chat, makes time fly away, this is what made me forget how boring it was when I was hunting for my dark whelpling :).

Another tip is to read a web comic from the beginning to the end while you'grinding. I read pvponline.com while hunting for my oozeling, but you can also check out machall, gucomics, penny-arcade and ctrl-alt-delete. This only works for meele classes like druid, shaman, hunter, warrior and rogue. Maybe warlock can do it to with a little wanding.

Podcasts is also nice :) Listening to "The Dawn and Drew show" while grinding Timbermaw rep :)

Just shift your attention to something else other than the thing you're killing and it feels that it goes much faster :).

Vote for me, cause these tips must be spread to the people :)

Well I was just in a mood to grind myself a Tiny Emerald Whelpling, went to swamp and started to shoot at those dragons with my magical spells. (yes I am a mage)

Took me... lets say 100 to kill and about 30 a 45 min. time? Something like that.

It was so frustrating to see other people grinding with you (while you were already there for some time). I lost so much Hope and faith by than that I even wanted to give up. Lucky me I did not, I was just running like a grazy cat from dragon to dragon, told a little Hunter to flee (and so she did :/) and left the items inside dragon's pocket so the warlock could not skinn the hide.. and later on went gone too.

10 minutes later I saw this Item of this Dragon whelpling. I could not believe my own eyes.

Before I was thinking like: "Your always the one whoes never lucky, and when more people "strangers" join, you will see they will find this whelp right in front of your nose".

Well, Don't give up, just keep faith and if you're not lucky today, you will be next time!

A friend paid me 20G to farm for it for an hour. I didn't pick up one. I still got the 20G, but felt bad about it. I was determined to get one for my guildmate. I farmed for DAYS to get one. Didn't. Then a couple of weeks later I was looking for ore in Blasted Lands and kept dying, so I decided to go to Swamp of Sorrows to try again. The first Dreaming Whelpling I killed dropped a green item. I thought this was a sign that the odds of drops were greater. In 5 or 6 kills, I got one! Not only that, but I got a SECOND one 4 hours later, that same morning. Not only was I able to get one for my friend, but I get to keep one as well! :D

Some info I'd like to pass on from my experiences in farming whelplings:

-There is only kind of mob that drops the emerald whelpling, and it spawns about 50/50 with another non-dropping mob in the swamp of sorrows. If they are all spawned at any given time there are around only 10 or 12 of them, meaning that there are probably only 5 or 6 pet-dropping mobs at any time.

-There are three kinds of mobs that drop the crimson whelpling and they are all found in ABUNDANCE in the wetlands.

-It is SO much easier to become EXTREMELY frustrated and impatient farming mobs that you have to wait for respawns on, especially when you also have to kill mobs that don't drop the item you want in the process.

Having said that, allow me to say that I started farming the emerald whelplings (and tried for 3 miserable days) only to give up and try again a couple of weeks later, when I switched to the crimson ones. It is SO much nicer killing the crimson whelps, because there are so many of them and they're lower in level so they die really fast (especially if you're at a level when you can reasonably choose between any of the color whelplings). I got mine after about two days of farming and had an entirely better experience than when trying for the emerald whelpling.

So all in all: IF YOU DON'T CARE WHAT COLOR WHELPLING YOU GET, GO FOR THE CRIMSON.

And lastly, the only mob to avoid killing when farming the crimson whelpling is the Lost Whelp, they're the only one of the four dragonkin (lost, crimson, red, and flamesnorting) in the wetlands that doesn't drop the pet.

So go ahead, put in a favorite movie, turn on a podcast, or watch your favorite show on dvd and start farming! Good luck!

I must have horrible luck since people above me are complaining about it taking 2.5 hours for them. I have probably killed close to 5000 of these guys and no luck yet. On my first character, my main now, I leveled off the whelps ONLY from level 33-39, and now I started a new char since my main can't progress much past where he is until sunwell, and my alt has farmed off only these guys from 34-36 so far without seeing even one...If I do finally get one I will submit a suggestion to Blizz to make this pet epic since I have seen more of illidan's warglaive than this cheeky bastard.to those of you complaining about it taking 2.5 hours...stfu

A couple months back, I went out one weekend and picked up all 4 of the whelps for my warlock. At that time, I got the Tiny Green whelp in about 65 kills, which was very very nice (especially after seeing how some people have killsed thousands).

Today, I was running from STV to Stonard to get the FP on my L42 druid when I decided to stop and kill a couple of whelps, just for the heck of it. As you can see by the screenshot below, I got VERY lucky.

I heard people saying you can buy these for 250g - which sounded better than hours of farming to me. I looked them up on the AH... 3000g is the cheapest, the only other one is up for 6000g. Dark whelps are up for 4000g and there aren't even ANY red or azure ones! If you get one, you're very very lucky. I don't know about you, but, even as a pet lover, I would prefer 6000g over this pet (think of how many mounts that could get me?).

Finaly got the Tiny Emerald Welpling today :)
Took about a week, farming for 5-6 hours a day.
I am now the proud owner of all 4 welps, Azure, Crimson, Dark and the Emerald.
A lot of hard work went into them, but it can be done if you are motivated enough.

Not nearly as profitable as farming the dark whelplings, and much more boring since the 50/50 spawn between types and small area to work with. As I said with all the other whelps. Keep your chin up and keep going! Good luck!

Over the past 2 days I was there in SoS for about 11 hours. I have been at it for 9 hours today and I was lucky enough to have no one else there trying to farm it. When I was about to give up this baby finally dropped. I was gonna sell it but no way. If you want money farm a crimson or azure. If you want pure satisfaction then farm this one.

Tiny Emerald Whelplings: May now (very rarely) drop from Adolescent Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows.

I would reccomend waiting if you really want this pet. I grinded for four days straight 5-6 hours a day and finally got it on my fourth day. Then i read this and wanted to rip my hair out.

Just to clarify, Adolescent Whelps in the Swamp of Sorrows CAN drop the Tiny Emerald Whelpling. I read previous comments that said they don't, then went there to try and find one. Only after about 20 minutes of dragon slaying, an adolescent whelp dropped my prize.

I was on the quest "Mazen's behest" and the FIRST whelp I killed, it dropped. I kinda remembered "huh, these are worth something sometimes right" so I said to my friend in an offhand way, "Is this worth anything?"

Hello all, I've been farming for about 3 or 4 days now, and still not a sight of the whelp but I will not give up!

#$%^ yes. i got it on my 200th kill on the dot. was there for about half an hour, got it a couple drops after i helped a lowbie with the quest to get the dust from them. :)

i'm a lvl 61 pally and on my way to the portal in badlands i decided to kill a couple of the whelps and on my like 6th kill this dropped for me....theres only one other on the AH for 3900g buyouy and 3500g starting =) i'm feeling pretty lucky...good thing too cuz i need to buy my epic ground and flying training soon haha

Got mine 50 kills or so. Was really surprised... I dunno if this is normal but it took them FOREVER to respawn. It was a nice surprise though - I was prepared to be there for a couple hours. Got my Azure whelpling a little earlier, too. Here's hoping for the black and red one!

It is a hard one to find...some just get lucky. Some say that for every 1000 kills of a Dreaming Whelp, you get it...but the problem with that is this: Let's say you killed 999 of them...the next joe schmoe that kills one...gets it. Just a theory...but if that is the case...you get the idea of how rare it is. I myself spent a whole month trying to get one, and I finally did...Today! (/cheer)

I've killed over a 1000 of these and haven't gotten one! Got a red one in 15 minutes and a Black on accident in likehalf hour while farming for scales on mt Shammy.

3000 no drop!
3600+ no drop!
Did it with the Dream Speck quest and no drop either!

Tiny Crimson Whelpling.
This little Communist reptile took a mere forty-five mintues to get.
Dark Whelpling.
This little chocolate-flavored flying alligator took ten hours to get.
Tiny Emerald Whelpling.
This bloody little cyan bat-lizard abomination has taken over three weeks so far. NO results as of yet, but two blues have dropped. Two blues, may I add, that do not sell well at all. I actually lost money trying to auction them off.

In conclusion:
The green dragonflight is plotting against me.

News from Blizzard: The nether whelpling will be white and longer than your average whelp.

ive done the math on this for the whelping and what i got was that you have to kill nearly 2k dreaming whelps if u want it to drop which might explain why some of you killed so many of these d@mn things.

ive been having problems with them myself i started farming 3/4 of the way to 43 and now im 1/4 of the way to 44 and all of them are green or gray to me. and out of all that i have farmed right now i have around 27 small flame sacks and on my server the can sell for a pretty penny

hoping if i do get 1 that i can sell in the AH and get my mount training which i have been wanting for some time now

I was killing dreaming welps for the dust, and I got that drop after 5 kills... I linked it to my friends and one offered to buy it for 5g, not knowing thier worth I sold it and a few mins later my other friend messaged me saying they are worth 200G+ I was kicking myself so I farmed for 2 more hours and got another one! I am letting my friend sell it for me since he is better at getting top dollar.

350 gold? Try a starting bid of 1,500 with a buyout 3,000. I think Blizzard lowered the drop rate on these, because I've been farming for a week for about 3-4 hours a day and no luck yet.

I remember farming the dark and red ones back in 2006, and they were nowhere as hard to get.

Yes yes, its true its true! I finally have a tiny emerald whelpling! i gave my boyfriend some gold and joked that he needed to farm me a whelp for it. I didnt think he'd really do it. but he went up to the swamp of sorrows, killed whelps for like 40mins and then it dropped! So he got me my tiny emerald whelpling! And now i am a proud owner and i love mr. gb whelpikins millions! lol. :D

I've finaly got it. People was talking about that the whelplings could fight for you. Well as long as I know they don't. A guy who has one told me that but there is another cutie who fights for you, an Arcanite Dragonling. It's a trinket made of lvl 300 engineers. Pepple must have got them confused. Not strange, the icon looks the same. So all you guys who like me want one just grab an engineer. :)

So I just spent the past 3 days farming for a crimson whelp with no luck, decided to try for an emerald for the heck of it and second drop... o_O

I know it's all about chance but it seems to be one of those things where the less you actually intend to get something (in this case, vanity pets), the luckier you get. I ground on oozes with two chars for a disgusting oozeling for weeks on end with no luck, but on my third (when I was just grinding to get to outland and wasn't even thinking of it) I got one on about my fifth kill.

Well, after many, many months of farming, patiently waiting until people finished questing, and getting angry at the horde for farming at the same time I did, I gave up. No more hours of farming for this! Then I looked on the AH. I found it for 150 gold. And bought it...I know...why did I spend that much? Because I could:)

Took me 3 hours of farming in Swamp of Sorrows. It finally dropped off a dreaming whelp. I've found you can't farm for an hour and stop...you have to kill until it drops.

I took my luck and got a Tiny Crimson Whelpling just after that. That one took 10 hours straight of killing. It dropped off a Crimson Whelp.

13 hours of killing for both of those pets.

Seems to me that it drops usually for people who have the quest... I gained 5 levels (35-40) killing those and I still haven't got one. Yet I hear of people "on a quest" who got it after 10-20 kills... wtf! maybe the quest is the condition for drop?

Nine and a half hours my first farm/grind session on the whelps. Decided afterwards it was a bit too much to handle for a second day especially with one or two competitors at times - so I decided to work in half hour shifts... Got it 15 minutes into the second shift.

So all up 10 hours 45 minutes, 403 Dreaming Whelps (and 404 Adolescent Whelps), around about 5500 arrows, 3 entire levels and FINALLY a whelp pet!

Edit: I went back 2 or 3 hours later to do the 'Speck of Dream Dust' collecting quest, and another dropped after 3 dust =/

Just farmed myself one of these little guys trying to get money for my 60 riding skill. Got a drop after 2 days of like 4 hours. Now the offers I am getting are like 3-5G... I am aiming for 120G but will most likely go as low as 100 or so. Just bites that no one realizes how much of a pain it is to get the drop.

Well after a few weeks of grinding the whelps I finally got mine. Dropped tonight. I'm so happy :). It can be frustrating at times, especially after finding a Black Whelp ( which I didn't want ) but if you keep at it, you'll be the proud owner of one Emerald Whelp.

I had been farming crimson and flamesnorting whelp out in the wetlands for many, many hours. Then I was passing throught the Swamp of Sorrows on an unrelated quest, saw these dreaming whelps, had read that they were rarer than the crimson whelpling drop, but gave it a shot anyhow....after abt 30 kills i got one! I've been farmin these things for two days and nothing has dropped! I keep getting muscled out by allies which is severely irritating. I did, on the other hand, level up twice, gather 2 stacks of blindweed (which fetches an awfully pretty penny on the AH) and I leveled up my herbalism to 300....but no whelpling...I'll keep trying :(

Posted on Oct 2007 about finding one on my druid and then finding one on AH for 20g. Well, my druid was passing through the swamp and got another off of the first kill tonight. Selling it for 1750/2000bo and within the first 15 minutes, already have a buyer for the 1750, wonder if anyone will buyout within 48 hours. Awesome. :)

Was farming for green whelp scales and one dropped after about two hours of on/off playing.

I farmed the dreaming and adolescent (even though they don't drop the whelpling) whelps for 3 straight nights, then I found out about the quest for specks of dream dust. It still didn't help though. I think the biggest problem I had was getting dreaming whelps to appear. Is it just me or do the adolescent whelps seem to spawn more often? On a side note I found the tiny crimson whelpling after about an hour and a half or farming.

I've killed literally 3500 or so Dreaming Whelps looking for this and still no drop. Counting the Adolescent Whelps that makes it almost 7000 whelps down (even though the Adolescents don't drop this) with out a drop.

Then again, I am unlucky when it comes to drop rates altogether. Something has a 25% drop rate? I'll have to kill 100 mobs to get it. And don't even mention the low drop rate quests that I've done.

If you're an allience and under lvl 40 I suggest you take someone with you to farm with, as the SoS is more horde dominated (careful you don't run blindly into their town! ;) )

Sen'jin server - spent approx 6 hours farming yesterday and was lucky enough to have it drop 15 minutes before raid time. No mod to keep track of the number killed.

I am keeping this as a pet so I am very happy.

For those mentioning chasing others away, if they're farming the pet, I say you do what you have to do. Either stay and fight for the Dreaming Whelpling kill or come back another time.

However, this is also an area to collect Speck of Dreaming Dust. So when someone else showed up in the area, I let them know I'd leave the Adolescent Whelps for them to farm and made sure to fully loot mine so they could skin them. It was nice solution, with me obtaining the pet 30 minutes after they left.

Best of luck and now I'm on to the Crimson Whelpling so I can have all 4 dragons.

Howdy,

I was in the Swamp of sorrows farming the Dreaming and Adolescent Whelps for Green Whelp Scales used in armour production.

I'd previously killed 125 Adolescent and 171 Dreaming when on the 18th Dreaming kill this session it dropped...

Hopefully this will go a long way to help the 'buy my druid a mount' fund....

Oh, and I use the addon 'Kill Log' if you're wondering about the figures...

Hey! I am still farming for my little dragon! Just thought i would drop some notes in about the little guys for Horde members. (stuff I had problems with) How do you get to the Swamp? From Stranglethorn Vale, run north..go through Duskwood. Go around Darkshire unless the guards wont eat you for some reason. in the very northeast corner of Duskwood is a tower with Undead npcs in it. Take the rd east right next to that. It will take you through Deadwind pass (name?)..follow the rd north and then a little east. STAY on the rd. Very not pleasant vultures here. When you enter the Swamp, the whelps are on your immediate right next to a pond. You will miss them if you are not careful. Stonard, a Horde camp, is just down the rd a bit. Plenty of food, flight path..etc! Best of luck!

I have a grand tale to tell for this one...

I have been grinding whelps of different levels hoping for a drop since I was lvl 15 both with friends and without, died many times and got some nice greens from it, but no whelplings.

I had given up and have been playing aimlessly since I got my mount at level 40. I happened into the SOS to finish my artisan fishing quest, and noticed that there were green whelps. I suddenly remembered reading on here that these are the Dreaming Whelps that drop the rarest of all - the tiny emerald whelpling! So I decided to grind for a bit, they are still green for my lvl 43 NE Hunter. I was not alone however, there was a Troll rogue farming there as well. I think he had already been there a while when I got there as he seemed to have a system going.

I farmed for a bit, and every time we went for the same one, he would get his hit in a millisecond before me and would get the loot. I left, ate dinner, came back farmed a bit and then left again for some family time. I decided to go on and try a bit more before bed, and I said to my Husband that "I wish the game would pity me after all these months of grinding whelps, and give me at least 1 whelp drop - 2 if they are feeling generous, cause I want one as a pet as well". 2 more kills later I still had nothing.

The place was cleared out and we were all (a warlock had joined us by this time, and Mr. Troll rogue was STILL farming 4 hours later) waiting for them to rez. I saw one come up at the same time as the troll who was closer. I put up cheetah and ran straight for it. This time it was my arrow that beat his dagger by a millisecond. He watched to make sure it wasn't really his loot (the hits were that close) and when I right-clicked to loot, there it was! Since I couldn't tell him that I got it, I started dancing and blew him a kiss, I guess it was mean, but I was so happy, and he was horde after all!

I am sure his guildies probably got an earful that night, cause there was no mistaking that I got the whelpling.

If you are reading this (Troll Rogue named Goir from Eitrigg), I want to say that I am sorry you spent so long farming to lose out like that, but I am not sorry I beat you to the punch on that one. All's fair in love and war!

my 33 undead warrior swam from arathi to swamp of sorrows (jumped off the bridge that leads to wetlands) ...found the whelps and after about 20 kills, i got the lil green lizard pet :) selling so i can get my horse (running everywhere bites...i miss my 60 mage's epic :(

This dropped for me on Midev on December 4th. When it dropped I emediatly came here to research what I had and was suprised at the insame prices ppl would pay for a pet. For those of you interested in its value, I hope the following notes help.
Dropped on Dec 4 2006 on Mediv.
IronForge AH posting price for <=2 hours ~1.5 silver.
IronForge AH posting price for 8+ hours exactly 5 silver.
IronForge AH posting price for 24 hours ~25 silver (im not certin about this)

With the AH cut, i netted 171Gold. Im quite happy with my sale :)

Posted on Medive AH 5-7 times on various Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Monday nights from December 4th 2006 to December 21 2006.

Those seem to be the busiest days, when most people play, so I had the best chance of selling it.

Posted it 5 times for only 2 hours at a time at 299Gold min to 499Gold buyout. And posted it a few times for 299Gold-499Gold for 8 hours. I posted it for shorter times mainly because I wanted to be there when it sold to collect my $$$ asap! I was also hoping it would encourage someone to pay my insane ripoff price of 299Gold.

Finally sold it on December 21 2006 for 175Gold min to 299Gold buyout.

Basically, some players have too much money on their hands, and will pay 175Gold for a stupid pet dragon. Well I hope they enjoy it. Personally, I find the ingame pets destracting. Anyway. If you have this and are selling it, GO FOR THE RIPPOFF! and post it for a high price. Chances are, people will look at your high price, say your a gold farmer, and not buy it the first 5 or six times you post it. Then drop the price a few weeks later about 100Gold or so. People will think your desperate to sell the darn thing, (perhaps because its been on the AH for so long during peak hours and not selling) or perhaps they will think that their getting a deal.

Anyway, like someone else said, you should get at least 100 Gold for this. Especially if you are on an older server. If you are on a newer server, try for at least 500 Gold (imho). There is no fixed worth for this item, so you will just have to post it a few times at various prices to gage where ppl are comfortable buying.

Wow! Been farming Dreaming Whelps for a week streight. I've made 2 levels (36-38) and still no tiny emerald whelpling. ... ... I'm shure I've killed over or around 2000 of thier certain name (at the camp it is about 40% dreaming whelps 50% adolescent and 9% jaguars). Granted the drop rate is some independant variable, but since only one has been reported I need to ask... "Has anyone gotten a "tiny emerald whelpling" and if "yes" then where from; what mobs dropped it?

i foolishly decided to start farming for a emerald whelping after i had some luck farming other pets. i had just killed my 250th dreaming whelp when curiosity got the best of me and i decided to look at the stats.

for people who are thinking about undertaking this task but like me can't be bothered working this out first - based on a 0.0007 drop rate:

in 100 kills the chance of getting 1 or more is 6.8%

in 250 kills the chance of getting 1 or more is 16%

in 500 kills the chance of getting 1 or more is 29.5%

in 1000 kills the chance of getting 1 or more is 50%

consider that you are also killing adolescent whelps of a similar number (for respawns) and you could be in for a long battle to get your whelping.

i'm not giving up yet though :)

When farming for this pet, Adolescent Whelp mobs should also be killed, as they share the same spawn points as Dreaming Whelps. While the drop rate for this pet is similar to other dropped whelplings, less mobs to kill makes the Emerald Whelpling much more difficult to obtain than his cousins.

Farmed SoS Dreaming Whelps (& the Adolescents in case a dreaming spawned in its place) for 20 minutes. Mine dropped at the southernmost point in the circle around the lake.

I HIGHLY suggest doing the quests to get the sprite darter hatchling. It's in a pretty out of the way spot, so not very many people have them. I always get comments on it (& the whelp!).

Fice hours farming, no drop yet, taking about 3 per min... so...
3x60=180x5=900 then divided by 3 due to my "estimated" 2:1 ratio with the others, I've slain around 300, and by my calculations, 950 to go...

Yep..so 50+ hours of farming on my offtime over 10 months..still no emerald whelpling. Found Dark in about 8 hours, Crimson in around 6 hours..yet Emerald is still 50+ hours and counting. 1/1000 chance my gigantic whelp farming ass.

I hit the Whelpling trifecta Christmas day and Christmas eve. I've leveled several characters a few levels just killing Dreaming whelps. I finally got the Emerald on Christmas day. The odd part, I also got the Crimson on the same day and the Dark the previous day. I don't have my total kill count for Dreaming whelps since I wiped out my data for the new release, but I'm sure it's well over 2000 kills. The kill count for the Dark was just under 700 kills.

PS: I have a first mates hat looking to trade for a Hyacinth Maccaw on Silver Hand.

I didn't even know these were rare. I got mine doing the quest killing those whelps in SoS.

Today, several levels later, I was having trouble deciding my pet for the evening and decided to ask in guild, whereupon I learned the magical story of the emerald whelpling. :)

The quest you are talking about is called "Dream dust in the swamp" or something like that. You get the quest in the inn in BB on the same floor as the horde flyers. It is part of a series so you have to complete a few quests before you get it. I am a horde player so i am not sure if it is available to alliance players. I did the quest in SoS and didn't get a thing. I have probably killed a couple hundred by now and still no luck. I will keep trying tho and maybe someday i will find one.

On my main character I killed 1500-1600 whelps before I got it to drop. This was a long time ago. A few days back though, on my new character, I got it in 2 kills while doing a quest involving these whelps (Dream Dust quest from Booty Bay).

hehe, i was lvl 42 my main, i decided to farm them, for xp and possiblity of drop. got it withing 15 mins... sold it for about 500 gold, alot of money for my lvl

then when i reached lvl 45 i tried again, 5th 1 dropped sold it for almost 1000 gold... i love these things, i guess i just got lucky. i was put them in the AH while i thought to myself to farm the crimson ones, maybe to sell them as a christmas set but ppl bought fast... i'm on echo isles

2nd whelp i've gotten.. this time on my Horde char on black hand .. server had just restarted from a rolling restart on april 25th at around 7:30am or so, I went to stonard to check on some rep quests for my 80 warrior and I didnt see the BE I was looking for.. need to research that more.. so I decide to kill the whelp camp, and I get there, no kidding, I kill a few dreaming whelps and start to think about all those bull stories of 'i just showed up killed a few and it dropped' and was laughing at how utterly ridiculous those stories are and .. then I was shocked because my loot was a emerald whelpling.. 5th or 6th kill .. wow

Well, allready farming 10 hours straight now with 60 rogue (1 shot per whelp), thats 06:00-16:00, no tiny whelpling pet yet :) Figured i post here, since it seems to give luck for some people ^^. Did found Viscous Hammer (rare), a shizzleload of greens, 2 iron lockboxes (1 of em was empty btw) and ~60 green whelpling hides. stopped skinning after 5 hours btw, and got like 100 flame sacs allready, for my dragonbreath chili :). Oh well, ill post here when i get it.

I heard that you could get the green whelp scales from the Dreaming whelps so i was like, "Hey lets go farm!" I had just found the Green Whelp armor pattern. I killed about 30 and got the whelpling, sold it for 95g, afterwards my guild told me i should have sold it for around 200....i hate myself.

Ok I have a great stoy to tell.

My aunt was telling me about these littel guys so I decided to come on here and see what all the fuss is about. After reading all your stories I almost did not even want to try. I changed my mind and I was off to the Swamp of Sorrow. I reset all my counters and kills. I spent the next two and a half hours grindg away tring to get this thing. I had killed 49 of the Draming Whelps and about 50ish of the other ones. I was heading out of teh place and I saw a Dreaming Whelp pop up so I charged it just for the fun of it. I killed it in a mear 3 hits looted it and continued back to the village. When I got there I began to sell me stuff and I noticed that there was a red thing in my pack so I moused over it and there was my first Tiny Emerald Whelpling pet. Only took 2.5 hours and 50 kills :) I have not sold it yet I can't decide what I want to do with it. But for those less lucky than myself dont give up. It's worth it ^_^

Found one today, completely accidental. I've been frustratingly farming for mount money when I veered off course and killed some whelplings in SoS. This dropped off of like the third one. Either they're not as rare as they used to be, or I'm a lucky guy. If I hadn't been farming, I would have summoned him. Exceedingly providencial drop for me . . . Put him in AH on Icecrown for 150 start, 200 BO. We'll see.

This would be the hardest to get, mainly because of the slow spawn rate and having to kill the Adolescent Whelps in case a Dreaming spawns in its place. Not to mention the amount of horde in the area.

A little info to any1 thats is going after teh lovely wehlplings.
I resently got my first , the crimson
there r 3 kinds
Crimson Whelpling , dropped by the crimson dragons at wetland by the green belt (lvl 25-26)
Emerald Whelpling , dropped by dreaming dragons at the Swamp of Sorrows (lvl 35-36)
Dark whelpling is the hardest to get , dropped by the non elite dragons at the badlands (i think the lvls r 43-44)
All whelplings have a 0.1% drop rate or 1/1000

I've killed almost 900 Dreaming Whelps and still no drop. 1800 whelps total, but the Adolescent Whelps don't drop this, so that kinda sucks.

The thing that bothers me the most is I've picked up 2 Large Knapsacks that only have a .03% chance to drop, while the Whelpling has a .08%. Along with various greens that apparently have a much lower chance to drop than the whelpling.

I'm up to around 35+ hours farming for this damn thing. I've gained 6 levels (started at 35, now I'm 41). I figure I'll be able to go farm for my black one by the time one of these finally drops.

I've noticed that the dragons that drop them drop greens and blues very frequently. Im guessing this is the "cancellation prize" for not getting a whelp.I got a crimson myself, wish theyed make duskbats for horde since alliance get fey dragons.;)

I really dont know how long it took me but i killed only 109 of them during one of my grinding sessions... im glad i read this page to see that ppl are willing to pay 200+ gold for one.. if anyone on Stormscale server wants one.. whisper me: taurentino .. ill be willing to sell it for 125 gold! i think i might go farm that some more :P

I got relatively lucky and got it to drop after "only" three days and put it up in AH for 200g/250g buyout. Didn't think it would sell, given that most other pets were being sold for 5-10g only, but I thought, what the heck, I regularly lose money with my crummy blacksmithing efforts, so why not here as well?
What was giving me a bit of hope was that someone else had posted an Azure Whelpling for 600g, and if he thought he could get that...;-D
Didn't check yesterday... and today: POOF! You've got lots of money in the mail! Someone actually bought the thing for 250g. First time I sold something for even close to allakhazam's price suggestions.

Seriously, does this thing ever drop. I've been farming almost 3 hours a day for 3 days straight. I'm happy for ya'll that got it in 10 minutes to sell, but I'm one of the peeps that wants one to keep and doesn't have an extra 250g layin round.

The real reason I'm writing this is to ask a question. If you come upon a mob such as this, and you see someone obviously farming, should u move on or try to farm yourself?

I tried for this on my main off and on. Then I grinded from level 35-42 exclusively on the whelplings with my alt. Nothing. So I'm now officially in the market for a Tiny Emerald Whelpling.

Edited to Add: Finally found one for sale on my AH and I happily paid 2000g. Now I am the proud owner of a Tiny Emerald Whelpling!

Some useful information for people looking for this pet:

There are exactly 13 spawn points for whelps outside of Itharius's Cave. The ratio of Dreaming Whelps to Adolescent Whelps is approximately 1:1. Only Dreaming Whelps can drop the Tiny Emerald Whelpling (at approximately a 0.08% drop chance). You may encounter competition from players on the quest Dream Dust in the Swamp, which requires the Speck of Dream Dust dropped by both types of whelps. If they are feeling particularly nice, you could suggest that they kill the Adolescent Whelps while you kill the Dreaming Whelps.

Some players are unaware that Adolescent Whelps do not drop the pet, and you can use this to your advantage during peak hours where there is likely to be more competition.

It takes the whelps 6.5 minutes to respawn after being killed. Based on this, you can expect to kill 60 Dreaming Whelps per hour with no competition. So, you have a 50% chance of getting the pet after ~14 hours of farming, a 90% chance after ~48 hours of farming, and a 95% chance after ~62(!) hours of farming. This is probably the hardest of the three whelpling pets to obtain due to the limited (and shared) spawn points. Good luck!

This is day 4 of farming. I am starting to think this pet doesn't even exist, I'm starting to believe I don't even exist. I have found countless greens, and small flame sacs, I have found 4 blues and even meet two good friends along the way. One is a warlock who likes to go around picking flowers because they are pwetty and loves to bring them back to his grandmother. Another is a Shaman who is also looking for the whelping pet, he promised me if he would find 3, he would give me one. I highly doubt that, when I'm 1762 Dreaming Whelps in. But fear not gamers! I am determined to get this awesome pet! I'll be back tomorrow with an update.

Finally got this today! For me, the drop rate was extremely and painfully low--I killed approximately 1,000 of the whelplings to get this. Phew. Edit: And, actually, now reading the other comments, I think 1,000 is exactly correctly when it came to my drop rate, as it appears that there is some evidence that a certain percentage of people get it at exactly their 1,000th kill.

So my understanding was that the whelp pet would only drop from the Dreaming Whelpings but i decided to also kill the Adolescent Whelps just for extra gold & drops. To my surprise, the pet dropped today from an Adolescent after about 2 hours of farming. So be sure to kill both types!

I can 100% confirm that an Adolescent Whelp in the same area as the Dreaming Whelp in Swamp of Sorrows just dropped this for me. I have tried FOREVER to get this and bypassed killing the Adolescent Whelps many times because it says only the Dreaming Whelps drop it. Well that is not true.

Confirmed after 344 kills that it does drop from an Adolescent Whelp in Classic Wrath of the Lich King

You can get this whelpling from adolescent whelps as well. I just got one after around 1000 kills

Have a toon logged in that area. First kill logging in today got the drop. It came from the adolescent whelp, too. Wowhead's data is incomplete and doesn't show that.
