Anyone have info on where might be best to farm for rugged?

This is best grinded from skinning monstrous plaguebats, and frenzied plaguehounds, grind them for a hour at level 70 and you will get loads of rugged leather, rugged leather has the worst possible ah price of any leather, even the new knothide leather costs less, rugged goes for more tahn 20g for a stack, so grind in epl and you won't have problems.

Another great source – also in Eastern Plaguelands – is Terrordale in the north-western corner of the region and the Plagued Swines that wanders the village. They have a high drop rate and respawn much faster than bats and hounds. I recommend doing "laps" aroung the village as the locations of the swines somewhat forms a track which allows you to go round and round. At level 70, finishing a "lap" took about the same time as it took for the boars to respawn, which is great cause it allows for continous killing and makes your farming very efficient.
But watch over your shoulder every now and then though, cause there's a level 60 elite spider patrolling the village.

I would suggest Yeti cave in Winterspring too. I needed 4 stacks of rugged leather for my alt, and i went there with my 70 hunter. I cleared the cave and the outside a couple of times, and I got 4 stacks in about 30 minutes.

If you are below lv. 46 and still need Rugged Leather, you can trail others who are grinding, and skin when their done. Of course, you should ask first, but most people don't mind if they are not planning on skinning.

The reason why I don't prefer the Winterspring yeti is because they have the tendency to block freeze in melee. I've even been frozen shortly after I stunned them (druid pounce), which could be a bug. Either way, this breaks the rhythm.
The Winterspring shardtooth bears (especially elder) are great alternatives and are easier to kill in melee because they don't freeze or give diseases or anything like that.

I farmed these even up to the lvl 60s cause by then they were one or two shotted. Got several stacks in under 30 minutes. The Winterspring Yeti's are good, but don't go down as easy as these guys so it take a little more time unless you're 63+.

South east of Everlook. (67, 42)
Also, I too farmed here as lvl 60 Hunter and easily skinned 2 stacks in 30 minutes. Added bonus: picking up the skins from downed Yetis by the Bots!

Another thing you could do is just farm Ruined Leather Scraps and make them - you'd only need to farm 2160 Ruined Leather Scraps for one of these.

As a UD LW rogue, yeti rock big time. You can loot 'em, eat 'em then skin 'em! Plus one dropped Dark Pahntom Cape, which is always nice :)
Did this at 60 having done a few Outland quests to get some BC armour and weapons, which made the whole thing very easy. Needed the leather to level my LW from 290 to 300 and got the 120 needed in under an hour.

A very useful money maker these, used in a couple of tailoring recipes that form part of the powerleveling guide as well as the leatherworking guide.
And i'd reccommend the Yeti Cave. Went through it as a rogue leveling, nice couple of greens to sell, skinning and you could get up a nice tempo of killing and skinning your way through them. As noted above they respawn pretty fast as well. And the only quest i've found that requires these being killed has a very low drop rate, so you should only have to contend with other skinners for these mobs.

The yetis in winterpring are the best, hands down. Also worthy of Noting that YETIS ARE NOT BEASTS. well, they might be but they DONT DROP THOSE ANNOYING GRAY IETMS THAT ANIMALS DO! no more paws, bones, bosy parts. they only drop coin and greens. Useful for powerlevelling skinning 275-300. All your spots will be used for Rugged Leather, and thats why these yetis are my #1 spot.

Yetis in Feralas will also drop it if you skin em.
Also, the gorillas can.

I tried something not mentioned here yet and found it to be rather efficient. I went to the blue dragon cave in Winterspring, Mazthoril, as a 70 druid. The elite dragons in and around the cave are terribly easy to kill as a 70, yield decent silver (about 15-20 silver per mob on average), grey vendor weapons worth 1-2g, and are very plentiful.
I just kept clearing the cave, and I found that the vast majority of the elite dragons skinned dropped 2 pieces of rugged leather each, with the occasional blue dragon scale or worn dragon scale. Very few of them dropped only 1 piece, and even fewer of them dropped thick leather. The norm was 2 ruggeds per mob. I farmed SEVEN STACKS - 140 pieces - in about 45 minutes. I'd HIGHLY recommend the dragon cave if you're a higher level, as it yielded great amounts of rugged leather, no one else was around, and it was very easy to plow through them.
I tried the yeti cave, and personally, based on my experience, I believe the dragon cave nets much more rugged leather, much faster. Hope this helps!
Oh, and if you're also a miner, there's always a rich thorium node or two in the cave.
And if you happen to also be a tailor, I always see the BOP Pattern: Robe of Winter Night (
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=14493
) drop.

Hello, just want to tell all the prot pallies out there that if your a protection paladin or another aoe class at 70, then you should not go to the yeti cave for farming rugged leather, there is a better place. check it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDtssm6vAdE
go dire maul north resets and aoe the dogs right in the beginning of the instance, my routine also takes the boss in the same pull.
about 40 rugged leather in 5 mins, they often drop 2 leather per dog but isn't even elite.
hope it was helpful!

HANDS DOWN for a 70+ i would say Dire Maul North...
Just inside the instance there are TONS of
dogs
that you can kill and skin.. and when done... exit and reset... viola you have a lot of rugged leather... i get about 2-3 stacks per clear... 10 min clear max... so in an hour that's 18 stacks or so....
AND since its your instance NO COMPETITION!
*Edit grammar and info below*
Also, another great thing is while you're there you can easily farm runecloth or green BoE's that have a good chance of disenchanting for
Greater Eternals
... Which usually sell rather well...

It has to be unanimously Terrordale in Eastern Plaguelands Plagued Swine drop it like mad and since they're neutral you can slag one without taking on two or three at a time. And if you're fortunate enough to be able to stealth through the other guys... it'll be only a short while before you are rolling in your rugged leather clothes on your rugged leather carpet in your rugged leather house.

I found that farming in the Mazthoril cave in winterspirng is one of the best areas to farm for Rugged leather. From the cave opening to the bottom of the cave and back I was able to gather the following in about 20 minutes.
52 Rugged Leather
19 Thick Leather
14 Blue Dragon Scales
9 Worn Dragonscales
3 Thick Hides
2 Rugged hides
4 Wicked Claws
2 Green Drops
11 gold 28 silver worth of cash and vendor trash.
I did this on Level 70 Rogue with Green and Blue gear. Only one Dragon in the cave can see through invis and he is all the way at the bottom. Level 60 Elite dragon named Scryer. he is misleading and is quite tough. I killed all the elites and the packs of whelps. This was a full clear.

Above is correct, Dire Maul North is ABSOLUTELY the best place to farm rugged leather if you're high enough to trivialize the content. I spent about 1-1.5 hours in here on an 80 prot warrior clearing the first two rooms of dogs and resetting, and got something like 300 rugged leather along with a smattering of rugged hides and thick leather. Don't even bother farming anywhere else, especially if you can AOE.

Well I have to agree with the Winterspring yetis being perfect. I don't know what went on with the earlier poster saying they didn't get any rugged. I ran through there with my 72 (at the time) druid and have 4 1/2 stacks in about 30 minutes. And since my LW was pretty low I could even use the thick leather to make some things and skill up. In addition to the leather I also got 2 14 or 16 slot green bags, I cant remember the name of them but it was great, used them to replace some of my old bank bags :)
Edit: Also, auctioneer addon says that Rugged Leather is sold by 1 vendor for 4g a stack... has anyone seen this vendor anywhere?

I'll add my vote for DM North as well. Grabbed my gorilla and killed the mastifs in the courtyard areas a few times and came out with ~200 rugged leather.
**Also, if you find yourself in need of repairs or running low on bag space from picking up junk, you can run down the hall just off the first courtyard and sell/repair there.

I found the elite blue dragonkin in Azshara very nice for farming this leather. They seem to have a fairly good drop rate for skinning 1-2 rugged leather PLUS since the are elite, they drop a nice bit of silver and seem to drop quite a few greens. There is also the chance to get the Azure Whelpling, which can go for quite a bit on the AH, or is pretty cute if you want to keep it.
Edit: It took me about 3 hours to farm the 17 stacks of leather that I needed on a 71 Hunter in mostly greens. In this time i also managed to get:
~40 Blue Dragonscale
~40 Worn Dragonscale
1 BoE Epic
1 Boe Blue
1 Azure Whelpling
16 Rugged Hide
8 Thick Hide
A bunch of greens/patterns/gems
A bunch of grey weapons to vendor
And about 50g off the dragons themselves
Note: there was also a bit of Thick Leather which I just turned into Rugged as I got it.

If you're a leatherworker (and you're more interested in leveling your profession than to simply sell the leathers) I would suggest to farm these from the scorpids in Silithius. From them you can obtain at the same time the Heavy Scorpid Scales, that along with Rugged Leathers are used to make
these bracers
, the best way to level your Leatherworking from 255 to 280 and so.

fairly quick drops off of the furbolgs in winterspring. Theres a tunic too, and some gloves that you can buy off the vendor "Qia" in Everlook.
Just take a couple trips around Frostsaber rock until you either A. Have enough rugged leather to get to 300 with trainer stuff, or B. Have enough rugged and frostsaber leather to get to 300. Because I've farmed this place a bit and neither one happens more.

I believe that the best place to farm for rugged leather (Along with scales for dragonscale leatherworkers) is at the cave in Mazthoril where almost all the elites (level 54ish) are easily soloable and they drop 2x rugged leather all the time. That's the place I usually grind for rugged leather.

As a level 80 rogue who didnt level up his Lw ive started to try and get 2 450 in it. So i needed some rugged leather. At 20g a stack on my server i thought it was better to farm for it. So i went to the ice thistle cave in winterspring and farmed for 1 hour. In this hour i got 129 rugged leather, 44 thick leather, Health pots and two greens.
So overall i think this is great place to get rugged leather.

I have to agree that if your high enough dire maul north is the place to go. Can only reset 5 times before Blizz stops you from entering but in those 5 runs I got 160 Rugged Leather in about 20 minutes. Most of the mobs dropped 2 pieces each.

tried terrordale and DM north.
Terrordale - Swine are a good source but don't respawn fast enough. Had to search around the "village" for them too.
DM North is the best.
Simply run straight in, go down the ramp, kill the hounds which yields usually 1.5 stacks, run out, reset, rinse and repeat. Hounds drop 1-2 rugged leather, rarely 1-2 thick leather, hides, and wolf leather or something of the sort.
NOTE: you do need the crescent key to get in (unless you can pick locks)

Couldn't disagree more. Plaguelands is 1, a pain of a flight to get to from almost anywhere, and 2, a bit of a ride to get up into that corner. I'm farmin Azshara, the blue dragon kin 'lites almost always drop rugged leather and sometimes 2. When it's not that it's blue dragonscales, which gets snapped up on the AH on my server. Also got more than one loc with the dragonkin so easy to pass the respawn flippin between the two and still be gatherin.

Agreed.
Farmed 160 Rugged Leather in Terrordale in 1h 20min.
No interruptions, fast respawn, a few other mobs easy to avoid (plus, they're lvl 56, so they probably won't aggro).
Great for me, as Rugged Leather Stacks go for 40g on Lethon.

Something else to watch out for around Terrordale is the Cursed Mages. They slap Tainted Mind on you which reduces your intellect by 20% for 10 minutes. As an 80 enhanced Shaman that isn't a major problem but for a player leveling through their 50's it could turn into an issue depending on what class they are.

Go to the Yeti Cave in Winterspring at
67.41
. You can group these up really nicely considering the Matriarch's / Patriarch's have a sprint ability which helps keep them from sling-shotting back to their original position.
Start at the entrance and grab the first 4, you should be able to tag them all without having to run too far. From then on, you should be able to grab them in groups of 4-5 in each section with 1 group of x2 yetis near the beginning. Farmed for 45mins and was able to gather nearly 100 Rugged Leather and 60 Thick Leather (transmutable into Rugged Leather by LW'ers). Very low impact and, best of all, the yeti's (considering they are humanoid) drop silver and higher-value vendor items. Hope this helps...
EDIT: Thought I'd mention there is a pair of Thorium nodes in here.

I wanted to get my sham sham's leatherworking at 300 before he hit outland. I've been having problems getting this leather together. Tried the yetti cave in Winterspring, but it was slow at level 58 as was the swines in Terrordale.
After reading a few more posts I decided to try the Burning Steppes. The Terror Wing path is full of dragonkin which can be farmed. I'm farming them now as I type this and after about 10 minutes I have a stack of rugged. The mobs are 4~ levels or so below me meaning i can kill them alot faster with little down time.
If you are like me and wanting your proffessions finished before you get to Outland this would be a nice place for leather workers needing to farm that last bit of rugged leather.
Edit: I beleive some-one mentioned the respawn being rather slow.
I just cleared a small area and started to write this. After i went back the small area i had cleared out had respawned. And it couldn't of taken me 3 minutes or so to type this out.

Tested the Terrordale site with a level 65 feral druid. One timed hour of farming
Plagued Swine
got me:
Rugged Leather x 96 (average of 12min 30sec per stack)
Thick Leather
x 13
Rugged Hide
x 4
2g, 52s, 82c in sellable gray items (see below)
Out of rest bouns. (about 261 exp/kill)
Regardless of how much bag space you have, you'll run out of bag space. As with most skinning mobs, the swine drop a bunch of gray items that don't stack well. In this case
Large Boar Tusk
s and
Ivory Boar Tusk
s. When you run out of space, destroy the large ones and save the Ivory ones, as the Ivory vendor for 4.5 times more.
From
the alliance flight point
the ride to this site takes about seven minutes on a slow mount, five on a fast one. There's a patrol consisting of several elietes on the path in the vicinity of Plagewood. If you try to just ride by them, you'll likely get stunned then killed.
The eliete mentioned above is the
Nerubian Overseer
. He's soloable at 65, but it was pretty close, and not something I'd recommend. Fortunately, he stays in a cave to the north most of the time, and you practically have to stand inside him to pull aggro.
-------------------------------
I've now also tested the Ice Thistle Hills site, killing
Ice Thistle Yetis
,
Matriarchs
and
Patriarchs
in Winterspring. The best spot for these is in a cave. The entrance is at , and the ramp to that entrance is at , under a minute to the south from both the
Alliance Flight
and the
Horde Flight
. Once again, this was one hour to the minute of timed farming, and I got:
Rugged Leather x 106 (or an average of 11 min 20 sec per stack)
Thick Leather
x 64
Rugged Hide
x 11
Thick Hide
x 7
Pattern: Chimeric Leggings
Peerless Shoulders of the Eagle
Obsidian Band of the Gorilla
7g, 86s, 88c in direct money loot
Out of rest bonus again (exp varies, as there's a range of levels here)
The previous claims that these spawn faster than they can be killed is accurate, even when there's horde competition about. My suggestion is to do all the ones in the cave, run out, jump off the ramp, then kill your way back up. By the time you reach the entrance again, stuff will have started to respawn.

Dire Maul North is
the best
source for Rugged Leather. The courtyard at the beginning of the entrance has tons of mobs that drop up to 2 pieces of Rugged Leather at a time. I highly recommend this spot as I farmed about 240 pieces of leather in about 20 minutes.
The only problem is that you'll be locked out after the 5th instance reset but it'll make leveling your LW so much faster.

Just did 10 Rugged Leather runs in DM and thought I would tell you what I got for my "hard" work.
I did this with my 65 Deathknight
10 runs ~ 90mins
360 Rugged Leather (18 stacks)
50 Thick Leather (2½ stacks)
15 Rugged Hides
18 Runecloth
8 bop greens from the first boss ( you dont need to kill him if you dont want to, you can sneak past him)
2 bop blues from the same boss
1 boe green
Roughly 30g worth in junk (only toke up 8 bag slots as the hyenas only drop 2 kinds of junk)
Roughly 9000 xp from each run
And finally got my skinning skill to 390
DM north is by far the best place to gather Rugged Leather provided you are high enough level to solo the packs of 4-6 normal hyenas.

After farming the Yeti Cave in Winterspring for an hour or two a day I made these assumptions as to how long it would take to reach the desired amount of leather I needed.
In one clear of the entire cave and the 2 Yeti standing just outside of it I roughly calculated that I was skinning this much leather.(bear in mind this is simply a rough calculation and is not exact)
19-24 Rugged Leather
5-10 Thick Leather
1-5 Rugged Hide
I was also looting quite a lot of silver from these mobs roughly 1-6+ silver each kill which can greatly add up to earing around 30-50g when I will be completely done with my need for Rugged Leather. There is also a chance to earn BoE blues or even epics maybe but so far the most valuable thing I've looted off a Yeti are greys and Major/Superior Potions.
Well, hope this helps in any way and happy hunting giant ice bear...things. ^_^

Dire Maul was always skipped by my toons when levelling up, as by the mid-50s I was seriously gunning for 58 and getting to Hellfire Peninsula. Having only cleared it the once to get the achievement on my main, when my skinner decided to check the place out based on this thread, I thought I'd capture what's required to help others not so fluent with this instance.
1) Fly to Thalanaar, on the border of Feralas and Thousand Needles
2) Head West on the trail to Dire Maul. Once at Dire Maul, follow the huge ramp up towards the building complex
3) Avoiding ogres is trivial. Follow the wide corridor as it doglegs to the East, and then you arrive at a long corridor that runs East-West.
4) First mission is to hit up Dire Maul: East, as we need to kill a guy to get the Crescent Key for Dire Maul North.
5) Follow the corridor up to the Eastern end. A narrower corridor is on the North wall - follow it, it curves to the East again, ending in the instance entrance for Dire Maul: East. Zone in.
6) The guy who drops the Crescent Key is a small imp called
Pusillin
, but before you are able to kill him, he makes you play a rather irritating game of "chase". From where you are, looking ahead, you should see a large open area filled with trees, and an elevated surrounding area that is overrun with plants and warp elementals.
Be very careful not to fall down.
To get back up to the elevated platform is a
major pain
.
7) Start heading left, working your way around on the elevated platform to the northwest of the central tree area. Pusillin is a small imp, just like the warlock pet, but he
doesn't
show an exclamation mark over his head, even if you have low level quest tracking enabled. Instead, talk to him, and choose the speech option "Game? Are you crazy?"
8) Pusillin immediately scuttles off and will run a fair distance before he stops, namely the south part of the elevated platform. Chase after him, killing trash that you encounter as necessary. The trash is trivial at level 80, but they do tend to stray in packs across the platform, so some killing is necessary.
9) Pusillin starts off when you talk to him again, this time stopping at the northeastern corner of the platform.
10) Once again, Pusillin takes off, this time heading East into a narrow corridor with some stealth mobs. He stops again in a large room full of demons.
11) I quite like this next speech bubble: "DIE!". Pusillin scuttles off, heading to the right under a platform, with a ramp at the back that takes him up onto the platform itself. The last speech bubble makes him targetable, but he summons a few trash adds and casts a buff on himself that reflects spell damage.
12) Once dead, you can loot the Crescent Key, and retrace your steps back to the elevated platform. This time, work your way all the way around (via the South side) until you are back at the northwest corner, near where Pusillin began his annoying game of chase. Once again -
don't fall down!
13) Near where Pusillin started, you'll see an opening to the West, and inside there, there is an instance portal. This is actually a second entrance to Dire Maul: East, and by going through it, you are actually exiting the wing to rejoin the main game world. Go through.
14) Walk ahead through this short corridor, and turn to your right - you'll see a large open area with some hapless ogres and in the middle is a small PVP arena. Don't go into this arena, of course, but instead if you look further to your right, to the North, you will see a short ramp leading up to a colossal wooden door. Head towards this door.
15) When you get to the massive door, you'll note that it cannot be opened by the Crescent Key, but there is a small, normal-sized door off to the side that

I farmed a lot of these on the Isle of dread, Feralas. There a lot of chimearas there. They are lvl 60 elite, which i beleive were used for the opening of AQ40. I killed them on my lvl 80 warlock without any difficulty.
To get to the middle of the isle, you have to get to the east shore. In about the middle of that shore you will see an opening to the middle of the island, at the map it's about on the D of "dreaD".
These mobs drop mostly 2 rugged leather each, which is quite a good drop rate, much better then in the yeti cave in winterspring, where i found only one a mob, and also a lot of thick leather in stead.
Once you killed them all, they take a while to respawn, say about 15 minutes. I combined this grind with my study. Every half an hour i logged in to kill them, then i studied for a bit more.

It takes 2,160 Ruined Leather Scraps, or 720 Light Leather, or 180 Medium Leather, or 36 Heavy Leather, or 6 Thick Leather, to make 1 Rugged Leather.
Better get to killing boars.

Best drop rates for rugged leather are hands down the Eastern Plaguelands (northern part near the back entrance to Stratholme) and the graveyard next to the small Argent Dawn camp (the one you will be ported to when you wipe in Naxxramas ;))
The level 56-58 demon hounds and plague bats there have about 95% chance on rugged leather, with just some thick leather in between and good rugged hide drops, too. The level 60 plagued swines at Terror Dale (west of Stratholme) are also very good for rugged leather.

in response to the above post "Better Spots" by Cavendar:
WHAT?
I don't know dude. . . Not sure what race, class, or level your character was when u wrote that, but I took your advice and left with 19 rugged and 20 thick after 1 hour. I, however, average about 1 rugged a minute or 60/hour at the Yeti cave in Winterspring. If someone can substantially top that, I'd like to know how.

After grinding both EPL and Winterspring my opinion is that both are good but each has it's own unique benefits and drawbacks. If you're on a PvP server both are in shared territory so you'll have to watch out.
Winterspring (WS): The Yeti are close to a full-service town, so it's a very quick run to/from for buying supplies and selling drops, sending/receiving mail, and using the bank. There's even the goblin AH if you want to use that. The Yeti respawn quickly and are close enough to each other to make constant killing/looting possible but, far enough apart to make unintended aggro'ing of multiple mobs unlikely. There's a steady drop of rugged and thick leathers and hides from skinning. Wicked claws drop once in awhile. The Yeti tend to drop between 1.5 to 8s each as well as the random green or rare blue. As an aside the lake nearby has water elementals for farming essence and an occasional 60 elite spawn, Princess <I forget>, who has some nice blue and green drops, including Stormshroud Glove LW pattern. Chimera are also nearby if you need/want some of those leathers.
Eastern Plaguelands (EPL): Things are pretty spread out. Being a hunter really helps because you can track both demons (hellhound) and beasts (bats). You'll do a lot more running and spend time finding targets, compared to Winterspring. There are occasional gargoyles and undead to watch for. This could be a bonus if you're also trying to get bones, etc. for Argent Dawn or armor quest. The hounds drop meat and other assorted tidbits which can be nice, or just clutter your bags. The bats drop eye balls pretty regularly. At 20s apiece you'll get some nice gold which is always a plus. The Wicked Claws drop more frequently than in WS. Green items seemed to drop at the same frequency as WS. It may be coincidence but, I didn't have any blue items drop in EPL while farming but got 2 in about 2.5 total hours of farming WS over 2 days.
Personally I liked farming WS a bit more because I didn't have to search at all, I could stay in constant motion killing and looting, and the proximity of the town made the whole process quicker. Class, current quests, and regional preference may play into the opinion of others.
Happy skinning!

For people who are level 47-52 or so, I've found that the best place for rugged is grinding the wolves and bears in Felwood. I think they have a 25 or 26% droprate, which isn't great, but better than any other place at this level.

Farming rugged leather off the Ice thistles in Winterlands.
In and around the cave southeast of Everlook.
Drop rate near 100% for me.
Off course you need to be 55+ do do it, but its worth it.
The spawn so fast, youll just keep on going forever.
And a town is near for refill and emptying the bags.

Any of you serious about skinning and have read the same places over and over again, which are all outstanding places for skinning, but cant really get access to them, think about two places. the first for you low lvlers fightin in the hinterlands, as soon as you get close enough to fifty, kill one thing and one thing only; TURTLES. go out in the water, do anything. by 55 i was pulling every turtle in the area onto me and cashin in. Dragonkin in Burning Steppes, and will drop scales sometimes. And they stand in about 6ish numbers at little camps. The Flamescale are almost 100% guaranteed to drop rugged, while "black" dragons are low level and will drop thick / ruggeds. (Also surrounded by dragon whelps). Also, wolves and scorpids in the area between camps.

Boy whoever mentioned Felwood as a viable option for lower level players was right on the money.
I basically made a circle around the zone, killing bears and wolves, and I already have three stacks of rugged leather. It seems to drop slightly more often than thick leather.
The only problem I've run into is the bears drop the large bear bones which do not stack and therefore take up a lot of bag space. So I really preferred killing the wolves here.
But thanks for the tip!

KK, if your a 70 noob getting LW up(like myself) go to Yetis in WS. It would take you about 6hrs for 480 armor kits, reason, well because you would have to use the restroom, you might get bored and scream because you have bad luck, you might want a beer or snack, you might have to do someting that you hate, might have to pleasure your lady/man, might have to watch kid, might have to do work, might get in to arguement because you dont want to do work, might get bored and fall asleep, might need your daily crack(lol, jk), or you might be looking at this stupid response because you want a better place to farm but you got caught up with reading. But just saying, i would actually imagen 4-6hrs, 4 for you all epics, 5 for you luck, or 6 for your average person who has the worst ass luck. But either way, yetis in WS are best place ive been for rugged leather.

1hr, 45 min (with a few pauses) = 166 rugged (after converting thick to rugged). 5 rugged hides, 2 thick hides. One thing I like about these mobs is they don't drop a lot of junk. Every so often a pot or a bit of food. Otherwise just gold and leather.

best place is WS by far, as a druid i would run into the Mazthoril cave where the blue dragonkin are and tank like 15 or more of them and swipe them all to death. i would loot, skin, and repaet. farmed 10+ stacks in an hour. tons of rugged leather, 1/2 dozen greens, and a BoP tailoring pattern which i couldnt use because im LW and skinning. i had 3 stacks thick and all the rest rugged.
thank you whoever said the blue dragonkin.

The Yetis in Winterspring worked out for me well I got about a 68.5% drop rate on Rugged, 26% on Light, .5% Thick Hide and 5% Rugged Hide. This was off of 200 Kills. Anyone needing to farm should try there it worked for me.

By far the best farming spot is Dire Maul North. You'll need a key from DM east, which is a pretty easy quest (def soloable for any stealther classes).
-The MOBs are 57-59 elites.
-Take down all the dogs in the courtyard immediately after entrance, most loot 1-2 Rugged Leather.
-The entrance is close by if you need to escape during the grind
-Just reset your instances to do another little grind, takes 10 mins or so, good amount of Rugged leather, I won't even estimate but about 200 in a lazy hour and a half+? I could never keep track of time...

Just finished up a 45-minute session at the yeti caves in Winterspring:
89 rugged
19 thick
4 rugged hide
2 thick hide
2 green armor drops
4 morning dew
2 awful claw (or whatever they are called)
Not bad.
My spec:
69 night elf rogue, with combat swords DPS build
got it down to 6.5 secs to kill the yets, 3 secs to skin, another 2-3 to pocket the loot and on to the next!
Great place to farm rugged leather! Close to the town, etc.
Thanks,
Johnny

If you don't want to do Yeti's for whatever reason and are high level (over 60) try the blue dragon's at lake Mennar in Azshara. They are elite, but go down easily, and high level characters will resist a lot of the spellcaster's spells if you don't have good interrupts. The reason I like these is they often give 2 rugged each or a blue dragonscale, which you can sell or use for crafting. They also drop a lot more greens and blues, and slightly more silver.

its very likely jsut skinned, I dont think ive ever seen any leather "drop" from a mob. but the higher llv leather pieces there are the rarer thier "drop" is, regardless of skill. kind like how you see a lot more leather when skinning than the hides. My guess is this works the same way.

Rugged Leather can be gotten from skinning very high level mobs. It can also be learned by a Master Leatherworker Trainer.
I got trained by Drakk Stonehand in Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands. He is inside the Wildhammer clan stronghold on the next to the bottom level.
He also trains Rugged Armor Kit, Cured Rugged Hide, and some Nightscape and Turtle Scale patterns.

Droprates for winterspring Ice Patriarchs/Matriarchs is 80%rugged/15%thick/4%rugged hide/1% thick hide.
There are also Chimera and Grizzlies in zone that "split" their rugged leather droprate with chimera/warbear leather. Droprates on those mobs are 40% rugged/30% chimera(or warbear if fighting bears:D)/20% Thick Leather...etc.
There is no other place that comes close to matching the Ice Yetis in Winterspring for rugged. Can kill 100 mobs an hour easy for 70 leather an hour on average.

If you're looking for Rugged Leather, you'd do far better going to Eastern Plaguelands and bringing down lvl 55+ bats and hounds around Plaguewood. The Winterspring Yeti drop Thick Leather about half the time. When you need large amounts of Rugged Leather and don't want to bother with Thick Leather, don't bother with Winterspring.

if you are after large amounts of rugged leather, and dont want to fill your bags with a ton of vendor trash from looting beasts, I suggest skining yeti's in winterspring. you get alot of rugged leather and some thik, but the mobs are "humanoid" and drop cash, so no bag slot's fill up with space you were saving for leather.

After seeing that suggested farming areas are the dragonkin cave and the yeti caves in Winterspring, I decided to see which was more effective. I spent 1 hour in each area and kept track of the drops.
Disclaimer: I went as a 70 ele shaman with green and blue gear. Pretty squishy, definitely not the most effective farming setup.
Dragonkin
Mobs are elite (except whelps which pull 3 at a time). Took much longer to kill than yetis but I didn't have trouble unless I was being dumb. I could only kill one pack of whelps or one dragonkin at a time (again, squishy). More stopping to drink. Most mobs only dropped one item per skin, but some dropped two. I didn't bother with the elite dragons (Spellmaw and co).
Yield over 1 hr:
10x worn dragonscale
20x blue dragonscale
31x thick leather
82x rugged leather
1x thick hide
5x rugged hide
About a 55% drop rate for rugged leather, plenty of other useful things, total of about 4 stacks per hour.
Yeti
Mobs are non-elite, and even this squishly caster could pull 3-4 at a time without too much trouble. Most were a 2-3 shot kill for me one on one. Outside I rode around and gathered a few up, inside I either killed individually or pulled a room with a bolt on each mob.
Yield over 1 hr:
120 rugged leather
54 thick leather
3 thick hide
7 rugged hide
About a 65% drop rate for rugged leather, total of 6 stacks/hr (one every ten minutes!).
Overall, I found the yetis to be a much more effective grind. Definitely an area more prone to questing activity, though, so if it's busy the dragonkin are also an effective option.
