Good place to get these if you are low level is to go to Tanaris and farm the Dust Stormers there. I got about 6 in around 2 hours. I dont' have the map of the spawns of the guys, but go to wow.allakhazam.com and go to the player map whose name starts with the letter D. His map is right on for the spawns of these guys

I've been getting the essences faster than the breath. Same with the earth ele's with essences dropping more than core of earth!

The absolute best place to farm this stuff is from the Dust Stormer's(55-57) in the NW corner of Silithus. I spent days everywhere else and countless hours looking for Breath of Wind, now I'm finding 3-5/hour. Approx coords are 30, 17. Core of Earth can also be found a bit deeper into the corner, behind the Dust Stormers

I have tried 3 times in NW silithius, i keep getting essence of air, i have so much of it that i had to vend some. BoW has only ever dropped 3 times ever for me in Silithius.

I make the phantom blade and farm my 6 BoW's i need for the blade circling the ogre camp in Tanaris in approx 1 to 2hrs.

I have had no luck in Silithius getting these. Also in Nagrand i have had no drops at all from them.

Whenever you're in Tanaris and encounter those elementals, I really suggest killing them at all times.
Regardless what the droprate says. There is really a great chance that they will drop it anyway.
Unfortunatly they dwell in quite unpredictable paths, which makes it hard to farm.

I farm mine in Silithius, got 6 in 1 hour, you just have to be patient. 10% Drop rate while being able to find your next target right away beats 85% while not being able to find the mob at all anytime in my book.

Using my lvl 70 hunter (farming for an alt), I was able to get 7 of these in less than 40 minutes in NW Silithius. Also collected 2 14-slot bags, 26 Essence of Air and 8 Elemental Air.

The whole process was much easier that I thought it would be.

Silithus was seriously the best, no doubt. Though, a small piece of luck doesn't hurt. Grinded with my 70 Mage for my warrior who want to craft Phantom blade. Got the first off my second, then it took a while to get the two next, but suddenly I got 3 in a row. As my MobInfo2 Addon said, I had killed 46, and about 14% drop chance (Mostly cause of the last three I got in a row) but I guess, as everyone says, 10% drop rate, and undoubtly the best place to grind theese for.

My goal: 10 Breath of Wind

My target: Dust Stormers in Silithus

Throughout the course of my 242 kill and 1.5 hour journey on my level 70 Destruction Warlock, I finished my goal and got some other nifty things:

13 Elemental Air
54 Essence of Air
92 Core of Elements

and some greens as well as 2 BoE patterns. The grind wasn't particularly difficult, but somewhat annoying seeing how half of the time they didn't drop anything at all. The drop chance on these Breaths is closer to 0.0413 than 0.11 as WoWhead states from these mobs, but again, that is due to the fact that they don't always drop loot. Happy hunting!

I was farming these in the NW corner of Silithus, and I killed 60 elementals before one BoW dropped. So it took me about 3-4 hours to get a stack of 10.

Either I'm incredibly unlucky or they nerfed the droprate. I got a 2% droprate after 127 kills from the Dust Stormers in Slithus.

I'm having the same problem with the drop rate, I cleared the area twice and only got 1 breath of wind. The item has vanished from the AH on my server... today someone put a pair up on the AH for 172 gold.

Northwest Silithus has got to be the best place EVAR for these. Got eleven of them in twenty-six minutes flat (didn't keep a kill count), seven from Whirling Invaders and Dust Stormers and another four from The Windreaver, the elite elemental boss that appears during the invasion.
Tip for Mages- turn on Dampen Magic and go wild. Run around spamming rank one Arcane Explosion until you have a sizeable flock (I found it helpful to grab mobs with Ice Lance), then AOE them down. Works better if you have Magma Shield on.

I need 8 of these for elemental leatherworking and I can tell you that Tanaris is a terrible place to farm. Without a 70 to back me up and easily grind, I can not head into Silithus where the droprate is less attrocious apparently. The point is, either grab some 70 friends or hope that there are some on the AH for a cheap-ish price. Honestly, when they are up on my server tehy go for at least 20 (except for today in which they are 16 start bid). Esentailly, if you need these, I hope you have some gold making strats, 70 alts, or a nice group of homies who'll either shell otu cash or time getting you these. eitehr that, or wahtever you're making is obselete by the time you can make it (Helm of fire *cough* *cough*).

try very hard farming in tanaris searching for gusting vortex..not a good idea..just need a very good place for farming as i need lots of it for my blacksmithing..make sword and lots of armor need it..can be very high sold in ah tho :P

These are going for 25g in my server, not sure why. Then again i've seen primal earth go for 35g. Mostly used for Professions of Pre bc items, commonly for disenchanting.

Needed 8 to craft a new pants for my rogue. Took my 70 hunter in okish PvP gear down to Silithus to farm. Took about an hour, got 184 kills and this is what dropped:

66 Core of Elements (36%)
38 Essence of Air (21%)
12 Elemental Air (7%)
8 Breath of Air (4%)

Of course the first 7 dropped within 90ish kills and it took the last one another 90 to drop, in true WoW RNG fashion, but whatever, I'm glad to be done with it.

I know exactly where to farm these in Tanaris.
Yesterday I spent hours trying to farm atleast one breath of wind. I got 7. And I know a place where those gusting vortexes are all the time. The respawn rate is approximately 3 mins.

im currently farming these on my 70 mage for 4 x phantom blades ^^ i tried tanaris but only found 1 elemental after 10 minutes of searching i then went to NW siliothus and now have 13 after farming 90 minutes or so the drop rate dosent seem to be 10% due to most of the time them droping nothing atall lol but there isnt any atall on my AH so i guess ill keep on farming :) hope these swords are worth it

I was able to get 3 dropped fromthe elite that runs around there. you will draw several at one time but should be no problem with higher levels.

Basic info that is needed.

Spawn times is around 8 - 10 minutes for them to respawn. When they spawn its random between Land Ragers and Gusting Vortex's.

Gusting Vortex's drop rate is around 20% - 30%. Then 70% - 75% of the drop will be Breath of wind. Then 15% elemental Air and maybe 10% for something else (*or less*).

Dont trust on the Living Storms to be there for you, if you come across one, Excellent, if not, No big woof. I have yet to get a Breath of wind from a Living Storm.

I spent 4 hours finding, tracking, killing, and cursing at the Gusting Vortex Elementals in Tanaris. Here's the Data I gathered from it.

Time: ~ 3-4 hours (lost track of time)

Kills:

28 Gusting Vortex Elementals
36 Land Rager Elementals

Loot:

7 Breath of Wind
2 Core of Earth

Location:

Broken Pillar, Eastmoon Ruins, and The Gaping Chasm in Tanaris

Analysis:

- Drop rate for my push was 25%. More data would be needed to confirm this as an absolute drop rate. First 17 kills dropped 1 Breath. Next 11 kills dropped 6 Breaths.

- Spawn is shared by Gusting Vortex and Land Rager. Kill both types of elementals. Land Rager does occasionally drop Core of Earth.

- Do not bother killing anything else. Scorps, etc. are NOT placeholders for the elementals.

- The elementals roam in a wide area, but their paths are predictable and they respawn in certain areas.

I got 6 of these in 2hrs killing Dust Stormers in the top left hand corner of Silithus around the big mountain there. The drop rate is low if they drop anything at all; I wanted Essence of Air but seems it's less trouble to buy it at AH.

I spent ages last night in Tanris finding and killing the air elementals, with no breath of wind. Today i found two, killed two and got two breath of winds. Just the way it goes...

I went to Tanaris from comments from thotbot and I roamed the abyssal sands area for about an hour and netted 4 breath of wind out of 8 kills on the vortex's. Not a bad drop rate...probably my lucky night but I will take it nevertheless. I will try again in a day or two and see what happens then...Good Luck and happy hunting. Also, if you happen to have mining as a profession, take advantage of tanaris and run the South Western Edge and follow it around to the South and to the East. I ran into 4 mithril mines, 1 truesilver and 2 thorium and also got a red ruby and a huge emerald..good pickings too.

Farming in Silithus for 30min, around 19, 20 where is full of air elementals i have results:
-1x Breath of Air
-20x Core of Elements
-12x Essence of Air

So, Breath of Air drop is freakink low !

I did a bunch of circles around Tanaris.. I killed about 10 of these "GUSTING VORTEX" and none of them dropped anything. I couldnt loot.

The best place I found to get Breaths of wind is SILITHUS.

Go to NORTHWEST SILITHUS. And grind on the Dust Stormers.. I got 9 breaths of wind within an hour. As a lvl 70 human warrior I took them out in 1-3 shots. I had to wait for all to respawn.

I killed a lot though (about 200) and the drop rate was very low. But it got me what i needed within 1 hour. In addition, they dropped tons of "Essence of air", Elemental air, and tons of core of elements.

It's been awhile since I've grinded the Airs in Silithus (probably 6-8 months) but the drop ratios have definitely been changed. Using a mob info tracker the drop rate on Essences (valuable for what used to be the best enchants) used to be quite low (~10%) but just yesterday it was closer to 30% (based on about 70 mobs). These Breath of Wind though, used to drop much higher than the 4-5% I'm seeing now. Still, Silithus seems to be the easiest place to get them.

There were no Breath of wind on the AH so I went to Silithus to farm some. Out of 100 kills I got,
5 Breath of Wind
5 Elemental Air
8 Essence of Air
33 Core of Elements
and 1 green drop
The drop rate is so poor nobody farms them. I have the patience so I was able to get what I needed and a few for the AH.

i got 6 in around an hour or so lots of air elementals and fast respawns you can also get lots of core of earth its not great drop rates on either but its the best in the game ive found anywhere

I play a 70 Warrior, and a guildy asked for a Phantom Blade. same story, No BoW in the AH, so I studied up here on thottbot, and chose to visit the Dust Stormers (55-57) NW Silithus. took about 1.5 hours, i killed 99 Dust Stormers to get the 6 BoWs. Pain in the butt, but it's do-able. so yeah, drop rate of about 6%, but at least once i got 2 in a row, and then of course spans of about 30 kills where not a BoW to speak of. happy farming.

*edit- i went back to NW silithus to farm some more for the AH, and confirmed the drop rate of about 5% from the dust stormers.
13 drops from 266 of these jerks. (that's actually 4.8%)

Coincidentally, someone else on Earthen Ring was farming this item today, and the AH is full of them at a 9G A PIECE buyout. This is also making the buyout for the Phantom Blade pretty well ridiculous. so if you're here trying to figure out why the weapon you want costs more than you have, that's why.

I just spent 30 minutes in the NW corner of Silithus and got 4 B0W, 16 Essence of Air, 25 CoE, and 3 Elemental air. Coords are around 33,12. I have a 70th LVL tank warrior. Good supply of Dust stormers - I was able to keep killing without having to wait for a respawn. Killed about 70 Dust stormers to get 4 BoW, so drop rate stinks, but the time wasn't too wasted.

The respawn rate is pretty good, so you may farm them without downtime.

66 core of elements
about 20 essences of air
10 elementail airs
and all 8 of the breath of winds I was looking for

The best place to farm them is in the north west corner of Silithus. The respawn quickly and there are two areas of mobs for them. Happy Hunting ;)

Ok so theres no breath of wind in the AH for about 4 days now.... so im pissed and so I contemplate farming - so I do it.
I'm a 70 Arms warrior with only 4 epics and a few blues trying to get 12x beath of wind so I can make 2x phantom blades for my rogue...

After roughly 3 hours of farming (which i've never rly done before) I farmed:

Quantity Chance to drop(%)
-18x Breath of Wind - 2.50%
-16x Elemental Air - 2.22%
-103x Core of Elements - 14.30%
-67x Essence of Air - 9.30%
-8x greens - 1.11%

I killed 1 storm elemental guy about every 15sec (literally after my charge CD was rdy)so that made roughly 720 kills
Misc.
-The place was deserted basically the entire time. I saw a 66 human warrior farming and i asked what he was farming and he said Breath of Wind and I told him the same thing. So he basically hit the road when he knew i was farming around. Later, I saw a 58 UD rogue just killing a few while doing a quest and left 10min later. So no real competition is in this area. There was almost always a mob in sight to kill!
-Bandages used: 8x heavy netherweave
-Pots used: 1x lv 45 hp
-I rly suggest going here if your a 70 to farm whatever I listed above.
-Oh and give a good score if you thought this was helpful :D.

don't go to tanaris whatever you do, you'll be roaming around for 30 minutes just trying to find elemental. best place is silithus, where the dust stormers and the windreavers are. drop rate for me was ever 1/2 kills. cords are 29,30 there is loads of them kicking about so you don't need to wait for respawns.

I got lucky i think, I found the rare Living Storm twice at tanaris (45, 75) . Coordinates are a rough estimate. I found both near the mountains in the south between eastmoon ruins and southmoon ruins

I went to silithus last night to get some, I need 12 to make a pair of phantom blades... first 2 gust of winds i killed dropped one, i was pretty excited. Then i got a bunch of no drops or core of elements :(

only had about 30 minutes though, got 2 breath of wind and 1 core of earth, lots of core of elements. I guess tanaris is a last ditch if you're not high enough level to take on the gust of wind by yourself... I wasted an hour or so when i was in my 40's riding around tanaris to find maybe 5-6 elementals all of who dropped nothing.

I went to tanaris first, waste of time. Roamed around Broken Pillar, Eastmoon ruins and the other place and only saw 2 vortex, both of which dropped breath of wind but after an hour of searching, 2 wasn't worth the effort. I next went to Silithus (?), jackpot. Go to the NW corner (Crystal Vale) and you'll see wind and earth elementals. The wind elementals' drop rate sucked. Approximately 25-30% to get **anything**. In frustration and boredom, I started grinding the earth elementals and their drop rate was better, 50-75% of something. After about 2.5 hours of going thru Crystal Vale, from one side to another, going back and forth this is the breakdown of what I got:

Essence of Air x 24
Essence of Earth x 19
Breath of Wind x 6 (why i originally went and the amount I need)
Core of Elements x 92
core of Earth x 9
Lifeless stone x 30
Mithril Ore x 8 (miner too)

Crystal Vale is good grinding spot. Not too many ppl go to Silithus (I hate that place, too many bugs). I saw a couple ally doing quests and 1 horde. I was basically alone, no farmers. dotwasteyour tim n tanaris... the mobs are too few and too spread apart.. instead go to he NW corner of silithus and farm the dust stormers there... droprate may be lower but you'll save time and pick up essence of air and elemental of air while looking for Breath of Wind

And then when i was farming mageweave on my hunter.

Yes, there are a few Gusting Vortex's (Vortices?) across the middle of Tanaris. As far as I could tell, it looked like 3 spawn points, no more than that. Best to get a hunter to track them down, or you'll go nuts wandering around trying to find them.

Given the market price of these (6-10g?), combined with the drop rate and the hassle of finding the Vortex, I'd recommend not bothering with them as a source of income. Hunt them if you need them for a crafted item, but otherwise don't waste your time.

Dust Stormers in Silithus.

They have a low % drop rate acording to the list above but I got 2/2 for my quest in about 10 minutes.

That's after spending over an hour trying to get them from Tanaris like a lot of the other people who've posted. Not to mention that unlike Tanaris, the one's in the North-West of Silithus have about 10-15 mobs just walking around.

So even if they have a low drop rate and I was just lucky, there are atleast mobs to grind if you're able to get exp from them (they drop core of elements and elemental air too)

I think either the info here is not correct, or Blizz has completely taken the Gusting Vortex's out of Tanaris. In 30 minutes, I only found THREE of them, and NONE of them had anything at all to loot. I did a little better in Sithilus.

I also only found 3 Gusting Vortex's out of Tanaris. The first 2 are around 59, 59 and the 3rd 38,38 i think. Anyway I killed the 2 at 59,59 and got 1 and nothing from the at 38,38. I went back and killed the 2 at 59,59 again and got another one.

I wanted to make Blackstorm Leggings for a lower-leveled rogue. I therefore needed 8 Breath of Wind. I thought this would take me days to do. I managed to get all eight in about 3.5 hours.

Here are some observations & recommendations:

- Be high enough to handle two, three, or more creatures at once. I was level 62.
- Have a mount! Have an epic mount if possible. My level 62 was able to cover a lot of ground on her epic.
- I never saw Land Ragers and Gusting Vortex at the same time in the same place. I decided to kill all Land Ragers with the hope that a Gusting Vortex would spawn there next time. I think (gut feeling here) that for every two Land Ragers killed about one Gusting Vortex spawned.
- I printed off a map of Tanaris and marked it every time I found a Gusting Vortex (and marked the ones that dropped the desired item). There is an interesting pattern that I will not share here... go create your own! =)
- Even though my map showed a definite spawning pattern I continued to explore the rest of the map ...just in case.
- I was pretty much the only player in Tanaris so there was no competition.

Here are my stats: 8 drops for 32 Gusting Vortex killed and 2 drops for the three Living Storm found. (This is more than 8 because another character had some drop several months ago)

found this very easy.... silithus, dust stormers and whirling invaders. got 3 breaths of wind in 2 min as a lvl 80. but they drop fast here... right around 23,26

I took today my level 70 paladin to farm these in Silithus, killing Dust Stormer and Whirling invader. To get the 6 I needed I had to kill about 200 mobs, I got 86 cores, 40 essence of air, 20 element of air, and for quite a few others I got nothing.
This was done during Windreaver's presence.
Droprate for Tanaris should be a lot less, as I've killed the only air elemental I could found in the whole Tanaris and got nothing. I stayed in Tanaris for about in hour looking all around it for some air elemental, got in the proces some mithril and thorium but no breath of wind.

For something that is required by 3 diff trade skills there are not enough spawns and those that do spawn have a crapy drop rate. These things are up to 15g on Burning Legion. Rediculous! But boy IF you need cloth you can get it from anywhere just close your eyes and click... grrr.

i to would like to say that finding these elements is beyond a joke. Im yet to come accross one in Tanaris. I have soloed it many a times looking an i even brought a lvl 50 hunter with me from my guild could anyone let me know how to find these bloody things please!

Using the map above I farmed one every 10-15 minutes.. it's hard going (since I need 8!) but it's not as bad as people seem to make out.. just wander around all the different patrol routes and it seems to work.

The droprate seems lower than 45% for me too, maybe about half that, but its still reasonable for such a useful item which you dont need too many of.

I camped one of the spawn locations this evening.
The place holder is a Searing Roc. Spawn rate is about 8 minutes (timed with my thorns buff).
Given that there was some delay from spawn until I actually attacked and a couple short breaks here are the results.

6 Hours
40 Rocs
2 Living Storm
0 Breath of Wind

If this is not fubar then I don't know what is.
WoW is a great game, but this is unreasonable.

I guess if you don't have tracking you are not supposed to be an elemental leatherworker.

the % seems to be right for me

each 2-3 mobbs kills = 1 breath of wind. 5 of them in ~20-30 min
sold @ AH for 7g each ^^

I hate the breath of wind...i need like 8 to make some legging as a leatherworker.They should improve as drop rating and as a mob number. I found 5 in tanaris,killed everyone for about 3 time and got 3 breath of wind in two hours...but if i need about 20 what should i do,farm three days continously for them.Like i say "improve the numbers of mobs" for better resoults.

I just wanted to thank all of you for the entertaining and informative posts on this subject. Now I know where to go and what to do, because I intend to do some farming for breath of winds. When it comes to wind, we could lighten up a little!

I could not help but notice some funny puns:

"Dropping wind" sounds very much like "breaking wind". If the "drop rate" in Tanaris is much less than in Silithus, might it not explain the reason for more flies and a reduction in air quality in the latter?

Pheeeoow! And I thought it was just because a Horde had passed this way recently.

Oh no, I'll be in for another bout of being ganked by Horde again sometime soon.

The best way of finding them so far: get a hunter on your group in the middle of Tanaris and let him track elementals. Takes about 20-30 minutes to find each.

Note: kill earth elementals as well, they seem to share respawn rates.

Killed 3 gusting vortexes today, all 3 dropped the wind. So the 50% drop rate is correct, or I am just extremely lucky lol

the Heart of Fire wasn't too bad. If you run to Searing Gorge, turn left(south). When you see the first camp on the left, turn right, into the countryside. there is a little lava pool out there and it spawns two different fire elementals, but only one at a time. I farmed this little pool and got my two Heart of Fires in 3 hours. they spawn every 10 minutes. I kept myself busy killing the spiders and elementals in the camp between spawns. good drops, good exp.

I estimate that the stated drop rate of 45% from a Gusting Vortex is out by as much as a factor of 10. Combined with the difficulty of chasing the wind around the desert :) this makes Breath of Wind well worth its AH price.

Random probabilities make for really boring adventures.

A 1 in 100 chance may never roll, or you could do 3 time sin a row!

Take heart, if they aren't dropping come back another day or time. I've had this experience. Some days they drop, some not.

I have not tried gathering them since Silithus though...

But now that my bank is bulging, I just by them bulk cheap in the AH. 75s -1g is a bargain - more than 2g makes it worth your whiole farming yourself. Going blind in the white sand dunes is for younger folks than me;)

Ps - is that true regarding the your level and the drop rate linked to level? Group membership eh? Placeholder? The more I look at it the more the game seems to run on Casino - "house wins" rules. Thanks for that.

THis is incorrect with regards to the drop from Cyclonian. I tested the theory of dropped, and so far I've killed him 66 times, and I've gotten a single Elemtal Air from him. I belive he no longer drops the Breath of wind.

on my first trip farming the winds in tanaris i got 2 but the last 2 times i have went i spent 2 hrs tracking them and did not find 1 vortex to kill which i think is complete bs i would rather kill 50 mobs and get 2 then spend hrs looking for 1 mob and pray that it drops

It's quite easy to farm these, I myself am a hunter and can track them so I got 5 breath of winds in half an hour.. But then again, i was speedkilling, running all over tanaris hunting Gusting Vortexes and those earth elementals(can't remember the name), got a core of earth aswell so, not a bad trip! ^^

What's really annoying is getting the heart of fires! :/ I was farming all day long and got one stinking heart of fire!

In abour 6 visits to Tanaris, I only ever found one Gusting Vortex and he did not drop breath of wind. Buy at AH but watch for the bargains. Some peeps are pricing way too high.

The Gusting Vortex is considerably easier and earlier to kill than the other two "high droppers". I was level 50 when fighting them and got 2 breaths out of maybe 10 kills - while my level 46 friend got none in about as many kills. I therefore have reason to believe that the percentage relates to level 60 chars, but, as was said earlier, with chances you can always "get lucky". The breath is indeed used in many skills/receipes and more often more than just 2. It therefore does not surprise me that on a "young" server (such as Moonglade) the price in AH is considerably higher (at the moment about 10% of all players are level 60) - in Moonglade at this time you either find no Breath of Wind on offer, or it costs around 4 gold. The median price, I believe, relates to ALL servers, so it is no wonder it gets cheaper later and is shown here for a few silver.

This has got to be the most frustrating drop for someone doing Elemental Leatherworking. It sells for 18-36g each on AH. And Drops are few and far between for people under level 55, which rules out Silithus where the drops are more prominent. There are very few Gusting Vortexes in Tenaris and all the other monsters are annoying while you're trying to seek them out.

I believe the drop rate is correct. I have absolutely no problem finding these elements. I have farmed for 1 to 2 hours per day and received 3 to 4 Breaths of wind to use for my Blacksmithing Recipes.

I've killed no less than 12 of these and only have 3 Breath of Air, which I need 6 of to make a weapon. Plus, the gusting vortex are outnumbered by the blisterpaw hyenas, basilisks (different name), and scorpion things by about 100 to 1.. for EACH of these monster types. I seldom fought a vortex without one or more of these other monsters aggroing on me, very frustrating.

Well, I have been killing Gusting Vortex by the droves. So far have dropped 92 of them. Only found 2, count them "2" Breath of Wid's. So the percentage they have on them for Tanaris is way off. Its more like less then 2% then 45%. You would think that at 45% like it states above, I would have somewhere around 42-44 of them. Well, I have a whopping "2" of them. So this cant be correct. Not even in the same city much less the same ballpark.
