Regardless of the drop rate percentages shown, Azshara and Feralas hippogryphs are the best places to farm these, due to the low and widely spread spawns in the Hinterlands, especially for those on a PvP server considering the best cluster is in front of Aerie Peak.

Feralas and Azshara both offer larger, closely spawning centers of which these can be farmed in advance, or as I prefer to do them, while completing the Hippogryph Musek quest in Feralas, and handing them in back at Revantusk Village when I go back to do the Jintha'alor quests.

Picked up the tailoring recipe for the Admiral's Hat earlier tonight and went down to Feralas to scoop up some feathers.

From an Alliance standpoint, there are very few mobs that will drop these. Your best bet is to head to Feralas and kill ONLY the Frayfeather Hyppogryphs, as these are the only type that will drop them. They're grey in color and tend to flock around the northern part of the Frayfeather Highlands which are dead south of Feral Scar Vale.

Unless, of course you're leveling and farming at the same time, in which case you should probably murder every bird in the area until the regulars respawn. :)

Also picked up a green or two and a Distress Beacon, so it's not totally fruitless. Took me roughly an hour to get 12.

These feathers have actually worse drop rate than this that is written in wowhead. I think a good way to collect them is to find a place where there are two or three gryphons, kill them and then wait until they respawn. Respawn time is about 5-10 minutes. My drops rate was 20%. Good Luck!!! Believe me you will need it. :P
Forgot to say that I collected in hinterlands where it is said to have best drops rate.

If your looking to farm the 6 Long Elegant Feathers, your best bet would be to head over to Feralas and kill Frayfeather Hippogryphs.

I believe they have a 5-10 minute respawn. (i ended up killing the ones in the area, alt-tab and watch a movie for a bit and resume to killing more. I ended with 30 Long Elegant Feathers in 2 hours.

i farmed mine off the Witherbark Hideskinner, seemed like a better drop rate than the griphons for me

My experience is that the 10% listed is accurate .. however the drop from Gryphons is NOT 40% .. more like 5%

Besides .. you get mageweave and money from the hideskinners and there is a larger concentration from what I saw.

Can't comment on drop rate elsewhere but frayfeather hippogryphs in Feralas gave a decent drop rate (managed to get 25 odd after about 2 hours of grinding).

They are located around 55,60 with a group of around 10 which seem to have a pretty quick respawn rate.

I was farming the Hideskinners in Hinterlands on Saturday for a bit. In half an hour, I only got two drops, and I was blowing through them in a non-stop farming spree with no down time (they respawn fast).

I'm going to try Azshara tonight, as the drop rate has got to be better.

Just to let everyone know, I get one of these and/or Undamaged Hippogryph feather from about 60% of the hippogryphs I've killed in Azshara.

I spent an hour killing those hippogryphs in Feralas and only got 3 feathers -- way too hard!

When I checked the AH I found the feathers selling for 5g for 6 feathers! that's insane, so I figured I'd go farm some more.

This morning I decided to check the AH again and found 7 feathers for 70s buyout :)

I killed 105 hippogryphs (kept an accurate tally) in Azshara and got 40 feathers. So in Azshara that means the drop rate is 38%.

I'm a level 60 rogue and killed these with great ease. I went between battlegrounds

There's a single wild gryphon in hillsbrad that alliance can kill to get this, and it has about a 1/3 drop rate. If you're trying to get 6 it's going to take some time :P

for alliance interested, the trolls in the various hinterlands troll areas drop these. was bored and started killing trolls to gain some wildhammer faction (necklaces), and got 3 off of about 10 kills. was in the hiri'watha and shandra'alor areas, in particular.

Day 2:..went back and paid more attention. they have a very high drop rate off the witherbark hideskinners, in hiri'watha. didnt get any off of any other kind of troll in any other area. got about 3 per 10 hideskinners, awesome drop rate.

Remember that the Frayfeather Stagwings DONT drop the feathers, only the Frayfeather Hippogryphs do, save yourself some time

I compulsively keep all of the white items I get, and while I was doing the Horde quest for Muisek, I was killing frayfeather hippogryphs in Feralas (south of Feral Scar Cave). I got 2 stacks in about 3 hours, and held onto them, then I found this quest.

Definatly the best way to di this is to go to Feralas and kill the Hyppogryphs. The griffins may have a higher droprate but these guys are all nice and close together and u dont have to clear ur way through crappy wolfs and oomkin finding them.

The trolls in the hinterland have the biggest drop rate and more mobs. I got 50 feathers in about an hour. i grinded for a few days i the camp for necklaces and the drop was consistant.

I've grinded in Azshara for 40min and what do i get -total crap.Earlier you could put it on - buff your party and vuola you got +100 health but now u have to wear it all the time!I don't get it - what's the point?Evryone would wear their basic head gear just to have persistent bonuses and armour!

I found the drop rate of these feathers in Feralas is just as bad if worse than the rate in Hinterlands. I've killed about 10 so far and haven't got one.

That's of course if they ever drop at all there...

I grinded 18 of these these in Azshara, from Thunderhead Hippogryph's, and found the drop rate to be about 50%. Got them really really fast, since they respawn fast enough to pretty much keep going all the time.

If you are horde and you want to make some money, farm these and sell them at one of the neutral AH's, because Horde can kill the hyppogriphs whereas alliance can't.

The best place to farm these is in Feralas, at about 55,61. There's a slew of them there, and they have really good drop rates.

Hmm, killing all types of hypogrphys in Hinterlands it look about only 10 kills and 3 mins to get my 6 feathers for admirals hat. Yay me i have whole pirate suit now, even though it looks kinda navy-ish :D

Way easier to get them off of frayfeathers in southwest Feralas. The drop rate is pretty good and there are a TON of them in one small area. By the time you kill them all, they are repopping behind you. Hunting them up in Hinterlands is a PAIN!

The trained razorbeaks, razorbeak gryphons and skylords are all factioned with alliance, so if you are on the alliance side, youll have to camp the trolls. =/

those droprates can't possibly be right, it took me ages to get those feathers drop of these trolls, and I killed quite a deal of those hippos and never got one feather drop of those.

That is a truly awful droprate. Got bored of trying to get past all the wolves to the gryphons, so went to Feralas to farm hippogryphs. It took me 20k exp worth of kills to get the 9 feathers I needed (having bought one on the AH), and considering half the time I wasn't rested, so only getting 200 exp per kill, that's a low droprate.

Absolutely kicking myself for vendoring a bunch of these feathers while I was doing the Feralas quests with hippogryphs a few levels back! ;-)

Before I got quest I got about 2 feathers for 30 kills or more doing other stuff.
After I got the quest I have drop rate just over 50% and tainted drop them best. Did not get any from bigger gryphons but smaller ones dropped great.

The drop rate didn't seem better at all - but there are just a ton of them floating around. Whereas finding them in The Hinterlands could be a bit of a pain.

It just seems faster because there's a bunch around in one spot, instead of running around all over the place looking for them.

Just watch out for the 53ish Elite Giant wandering around there.

There is only one wild gryphon spawn.
It will spawn in various locations behind durnholde keep but only one will ever be on map at a time, so you have to wait for the corpse to despawn (5-6min) for another to spawn.

The two named gryph's guarding path to hinterlands are ironforge faction, so alliance cannot kill them.

Drop rate is decent however if you are willing to endure the boredom.

This is a dumb quest with terrible drop rates.

I've been farming Frayfeather Hippogryphs for maybe 2 hours and got 18 feathers. Make sure you don't kill the Frayfeather Stagwings, they look a lot like the Hippos but don't drop the feathers. As soon as I discovered that, the drop rate wasn't that bad.

Can't wait to start selling Admiral's hats. :D

The drop rate on Thunderheads seemed only marginally better than Razorbeaks even though the site statistics show the opposite to be true. The biggest difference is the quantity of mobs. The concentration of Thunderheads in Azshara is alot higher than Razorbeaks in Hinterlands.

Remember to keep these if you end up killing the Hippogryphs in Feralas. if you do a short detour in the mid to late 40s to do the muisek quests, and then return to Feralas, then these bad boys will be dropped by the same Hippogryphs that you need for the second muisek quest. They even drop the metallic fragments and sinew. 3 birds with 1 stone

Grinding out the ten you need for the Hinterlands quest in Feralas is a good idea. HOWEVER, only the Frayfeather Hippogryphs drop these feathers among the many types of hippogryphs in Feralas. These are the ones closest to the yeti cave that have sort of pinkish brown wings instead of blue wings. There are maybe 10-12 of them up at any time.

It's items like this that remind you Blizzard put a huge amount of effort and care into early WoW; these are feathers and obviously obtained from birds such as the Gryphons in Hinterlands or the Hippogryphs in Feralas ... but the Witherbark Hideskinners (and only the Hideskinners) drop them too, no doubt because they've slain and killed the Gryphons for hide.
