Where does it come from and how hard is it to get?
Tyrael's Hilt comes from the Paris Worldwide Invitation (WWI) 2008 goody bag.
Rarity: One per visitor to WWI 2008
Quantity: Speculated to be a print run of 8,000.

How much would I expect to pay for one off eBay or similar?
According to http://www.wowtcgloot.com/tyraels_hilt.htm (most information sourced from there), the lowest Buy It Now price starts around $400 USD upwards to $800 USD. The price should remain steady and higher than the BlizzCon murloc items as it has the extra appeal the Diablo genre.

Facts:

"Mini Tyrael" is the in-game name of the Non-Combat pet.
The pet is a miniature version of the Archangel Tyrael from Diablo 2.
Edward Cairn redeems for Horde on upper Trade Quarter, Undercity.
Ian Drake redeems for Alliance outside the Auction House in Trade District, Stormwind.
Useable at any level and therefore available for twinks.

I have the 25 digit loot code, now what?
All accounts from every region in the world use http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/misc/promotion.html to redeem any and all special loot. This webpage allows you to enter the 25 digit promotion code and also select the region and realm for the character that will receive the loot item.

Upon succcessfuly submitting the above information, you will be presented with an in-game code. Write this code down or print it out; you will need it to retrieve your item. Log into the game with the character that is to receive the item and travel to Undercity for Horde, or Stormwind for Alliance. Find your Tyrael representative (listed in "Facts" above). Ensure you have got bag space to hold the item otherwise the item will be sent directly to your mailbox.

How to get the code/goodie bag
If you have google-skills (translation: Knows how to properly work search-engines*, in this case ebay's) and check the international ebay sites, you can actually get this relatively cheap.

Many ebay members will ship internationally, even if they do not list this option (just ask before bidding), but the "world-wide" search option on ebay.com will only list items that indicate international shipping, so you won't see all the items unless you go to ebay.at or ebay.de etc.

*) Try out various search words and options, instead of sticking to the obvious ones... e.g.:

The french word for bag is sac
Some sellers do not mention "blizzard" in the item title
Some use the acronym "wwi", others spell out "invitational"
Some use "key" instead of "code", some only use "card"
etc.

What is the lowest going price?
I've seen the code sell for as little as 150 $US on ebay.be

And in case anyone is wondering:
Mini Tyrael WILL work with Papa Hummel's Old-Fashioned Pet Biscuit.

I just picked up mine today, and confirm that it does react to certain /commands, such as /dance. I'm not sure if any others work at the moment as mine wont stop dancing now.

Got mine from Penny Arcade Expo, 2008. Blizzard was giving out the Paris Worldwide Invitational cards as prizes for trivia contests. I had to name all 7 Diablo II classes.

Little dude is all the rage when I pull him out in Orgrimmar.

Tyrael owners across the World (of Warcraft) rejoice!

As of patch 3.0.2 this guy will be account bound instead of bound to the character that redeemed it - and even better, when you "learn" it with one character, the account bound item will remain in your inventory allowing you to send it to another character who can then learn it.

This item is also one of the many new Bind to Account items.
This means you can send it to any character on your Realm/Faction.
When using a Character Realm Transfer these items will also follow you.

Mini Tyrael has the absolute best "idle" animations of any non-combat pet!

He will respond to the /dance command and proceed to bust some moves of his own. Anyone can target him and type the command out to get him to start grooving!

Also (as of patch 3.2), while idle, he will occasionally fall asleep - lying first on his back, then adjusting and rolling over to his side, where he continues his snoring, and even scratches his rear! He will then wake up suddenly with a powerful shout animation!

It's also worth mentioning that his "flight" height has been adjusted and he will now float at shoulder-level with the player.

It seems that Tyrael no longer does the shout sound and animation upon waking up, or it is far less frequent than it was previously. I have had him out for extended periods of time and not heard the sound whereas a few months ago it would happen all the time.

On the plus side though he seems to fly faster when keeping up with you while on a flying mount so he is less likely to get out of range and become unsummoned!

I won this guy in the WoWinterface.com comic contest, hes so awsome, but smaller than I had imagined, of course I have him on a Tauren so hes going to look smaller in comparison.

He dances when you /dance with him, and doesn't stop(sometimes even while moving) until you put him away, I think that may be a glitch, but its still cool.

If any of you want to see him, I've got him on my Tauren Druid, Arathius, on the Aegwynn US server.

He was changed in 3.0.2, he doesn't continuously dance until you put him away anymore, his dance just lasts for like half a min and he stays in place while doing it even if the owner runs off, but hes now bind on account(Meaning you can mail it to all your characters on the same server) so that makes up for it I think.

For basic info... Tyreal was the angel figure you see during the intro sequence of DII also known as the sisters lament. (those in the know know that its actually Baal). You can also see him on blizzrds main Diablo site.
I love Diablo and couldn't make the blizzcon... /cry

As of the latest patch, a sleep animation was added for Tyrael. He now lays down on his side to sleep (with animated "Z"s, similar to that of the panda cub) and then rolls over to his back, other side, and belly, with animations for scratching his butt, etc.

He's now THE cutest pet.

Confirmed!
As of 3.2 Tyrael now procs a sleep animation making him sleep (Zzz) in mid air while tossing, turning and even scratching his rear also procs a battle shout animation :)
