Alright, let's rewind.

I suppose I would be "just bad" - if my much neglected rogue alt were actually at the level for this quest. He's just 20, sorry for not making that clear. Since you said "if" without making any assumptions, I'll let that go. He will probably end up doing DM some time soon.

As for instances, my issue isn't with the idea that a player CAN have swords that are way better. Comparing instance drops with green quest rewards is stating the obvious. Most of us know which is better than which. My issue is that he said "should", which implies that it's sort of expected. Here's the problem:

Let's say I'm a fresh l22 Alliance warrior who bought the game two weeks ago. I abandon my questing area and enter SFK hoping to get Butcher's Slicer, because my guild says that's what I should do. It has a 43% drop rate. So if I'm lucky, I could run it once or twice and get it... or I could end up running it five times and having it looted to someone else the one time it falls. The game obviously runs differently for new players- for me personally it took me till late 20s to actually finish DM with my first character because all four of the runs I did previously were made up of people who had no clue what they were doing, myself included.

So here we are talking about Cruel Barb, which has a 19% drop rate and Shadowfang, which is rare enough to sell for a fortune in gold. Of course players can run low level instances numerous times to get blades like this, just as they used to do before 2.3 But times have changed and so has the game. Since 2.3 experience gain has been totally revamped. When I joined, my pally had to quest through Westfall, Dun Morogh, Loch Modan, Redridge, Wetlands, Duskwood, BFD AND Darkshore just to hit mid/late twenties. My rogue hit 20 just through questing in Dun Morogh and Loch Modan. There was one player in our guild who got a warrior to 40 in about three or four days. For some players, running low instances isn't even going to be practical because they'll have to go back to areas and start quest chains that are already grey for them.

Please don't misinterpret what I said just because I posted a list of greens. I was referring exclusively to quest rewards for a reason: even among people who instance there's no guarantee that they'll get better gear in time, if they're solo questing heavily or if they're on a faction/server/guild with unfavourable numbers.

For clarity I'll rephrase my original statement: could you list gear that is comparable WHEN SOLOING? Gear that is guaranteed? 'Iconic' instance weapons are a lot less important nowadays than they used to be when experience was harder to come by, because players outgrow them much more quickly. Phyto is definitely not the king of DPS but there are decent players or newbies with potential who will end up stuck with it for one reason or another.

PS: Any judgement of this blade's usefulness will be inaccurate if we don't have solid figures for the proc rate.

Ok herb skill needed is just GAY!It has a nice 35 nature damage chance on hit...but 100 herb ruins it all.

Just noticed that this sword can be placed in an herb bag.
Phyto is new latin for 'Plant', from the word 'phuto'. Perhaps the blade is made of some sort of plant? Would make sense seeing as it goes into an herb bag.

I play a Rogue with Alchemy/Herb Gathering and once I saw this available for a rather simple quest I jumped on it.

It would be nice if it had a glow but it is a very unique sword and has greatly helped in my soloing. I am going to be bummed when I have to updgrade.

According to thott this reward has the highest chance of giving a shard, so that would be a good reason to take this one instead of the other ones if you don't need any of those ;-)

wtf are all you guys on about? why can't a warrior have a dagger?
fury warriors: want faster weapons for more rage generation (unbridled wrath) and flurry has the same effect no matter what speed your weapon is...
Prot warriors: want faster attack speed for tanking.
These things in mind, daggers do EXACTLY the same dps as swords, axes or maces of their level. so why not?

Bla this sword is nice as a reward after a greuling 3 quests but the herbalism presiquite killed me. What i want to know is if the herbalism is required for the dps or for the nature proc?

i used the bluegill kukri that i looted after killing the 60th or so Bluegill warrior so i'm quie dissapointed to have both main hand.

Not a bad sword for my rogue (lvl 24 now). Does a good amount of damage and combined with an instant poison it can take down a MOB my level or greater in a matter of seconds if everything procs right. Luckily I'm an herbalist/alchemist so the 100 skill in Herbalism was no problem.

I tested Phytoblade
(Speed: 2.80, DPS: 12.9, +proc)
against another sword
(Speed: 2.60, DPS: 12.3, +2 agi, +2 str, Req. level 19).

20 identical fights with each blade, using the same off-hand, against mobs which don't run away to keep the numbers as stable as possible. Used my rogue and did the exact same 4 sinister strikes and an eviscerate on all the mobs (it just fit perfectly with their health pool).

Phytoblade:
Min. DPS: 50
Max DPS: 102
Avg. DPS: 68.25

Other sword:
Min. DPS: 46
Max. DPS: 91
Avg. DPS: 70.35

It's no surprise that the other sword was more stable in its numbers, but though it had lower minimum AND maximum DPS, it yielded a higher average DPS.

I know 20 fights aren't enough to give accurate results, but it looks like even though the other blade had lower DPS, its +4 stats made enough of a difference to beat the Phytoblade's proc.
