Highest drop rate is from the
Storming Wind-Rippers
on the elementals plateau in Nagrand. You need a flying mount to get there.

While the highest drop rate for Motes is still on the Elemental Plateau, the 2.0.7 patch nerfed the respawn rate on these mobs. Pre-patch there used to be at least one elemental active at all times. Each time you killed one, another one spawned at any of the 10'ish spawn locations. You could easily have 2 or 3 people farming there at once, and not have much downtime. Post-patch, the last mob killed doesn't auto-spawn a new one. This results in substantial downtime with multiple players camping the area. One player alone can farm almost continuously, but 2 or 3 players make grinding here very difficult and slow. This should drive up demand for Primals, and also have the added effect of more PVP to control who gets to farm, but will make farming more difficult.
Where before I could farm 4 primals and hour, while one or two other people were also camping the same elementals, I can now get about 3 primals if I'm all alone, and half that if there's one other person.
It's starting to feel like farming elemental fire at the Circle of West binding all over again.

For a new source of these try heading to Shadowmoon Valley and farming the Enraged Air Spirits. I've had great drop rates there when i'm heading in to the altar for some Shadowcloth.
I didn't expect to get as many motes as I did, so I stayed a while to farm. Sometimes you run into some PvP near the altar with the Alliance tailors, but otherwise it's a nice place for people to farm who don't have their flying mounts. It's also very close to a flightpath. You can zip in, check the area for hostiles, down a few elementals, loot your motes and be off about your other business.
The last reason I suggest this is because of the high number of these mobs rolling around Shadowmoon. There is another area far to the north near the edge of the zone where they are plentiful and have yet to be ganked up there. Kind of a pain in the ass to get to though.

The Storming Wind-Ripper (Elemental Plateau) has roughly 7,350 HP.
The Enraged Air Spirit (Shadowmoon Valley) has roughly 5,500 HP.
The increase in damage that you will have to do to the Storming Wind-Ripper is about 33%. If you keep constant damage over time, it'll take you 33% longer to kill these mobs.
Now if the Storming Wind-Ripper has a 33% chance to drop 1-2 motes, and an Enraged Air Spirit has a 25% chance to drop 1-2 motes, the increase in drop chance from the Air Spirit to the Wind-Ripper is also 33%.
Statistically this says that both mobs will farm you motes of air efficiently given the following is satisfied:
1) The downtime between mobs is constant (meaning you don't move far, or you don't have to drink/eat as much).
2) You play a class that can easily plow through 5k health just as well as 7k health.
If Option 1 is not true, then your best bet is Nagrand (because sometimes the Enraged Air Elementals are tough to find and move around).
If Option 2 is not true, then your best bet is to stay in Shadowmoon Valley because the mobs are very easy to kill, you just need to make sure you can get them with very little competition.
An advantage of farming the Storming Wind-Ripper is that if the air elementals are camped, you can always walk over and work on Motes of Water, Motes of Fire, or I guess Motes of Earth.

As a mage, being at the platform really doesn't take that much "downtime" I'm full fire, with clearcasting. 40% crit chance on fireball. Which gives me a nice mp5. The mobs die after 3 fireballs and a fireblast. That's 10 seconds per mob. Aswell, combining this with grinding the fire elementals. (Spellsteal the shield, and kill an fire elemental with it). Works pretty good.
As a fire mage you can grind this place easily. You need to drink once every 8 min, the other drink you take is your evocation. It does seem that the drop rate of motes of air is lower then the motes of water at the plateau though.

the Elemental Plateau is good for drop rate but man... is that place just over-farmed allllllll the freaking time. everytime i stop by there to see if maybe i can get a few hours of farming in, its choke-full of warlocks and hunters. if i try to hop on in and kill a few, since i'm Protection spec warrior, it takes me a bit longer to kill one of these elementals. so by the time i'm done killing one elemental, the 3 other warlocks and 3 other hunters have already cleared out any elemental that was even remotely near me.
i've found that even though drop rate might be lower, my odds of farming more of the Motes of Air and Fire are a lot higher in Shadowmoon per hour than at the plateau.
so yeah, elemental plateau if you're a warlock or hunter and want the company of other warlocks and hunters farming as well. for the rest of us, head to shadowmoon where competition is lower and mobs are easier to down equalling higher chance per hour for mote farming.

I would have to say, this for me is the hardest primal in the game to farm. For an hours work, I get about one primal in Shadowmoon Valley, if that. Normally I always end up getting those stupid Elemental Fragments instead. When I go to check out Elemental Plateau, it's always farmed, even six in the morning. When you are trying to make Thunder, this is the hardest reagent to get.

Since Motes have a use function, you can drag them to your Action Bar to easily track how many you got while farming.

Has anybody noticed a reduced drop rate on these? Particularly from the
Enraged Air Spirits
in Shadowmoon Valley? I used to be able to farm between 4-6 Primals an hour, and now I am down to 1-2. I haven't confirmed the "new" drop rate with any tools yet, just simple observation, I will try to post back with some more concrete evidence. My interest has peaked because I now have much better gear than I used to, and I can two shot these guys if I get a couple of crits, so my rate of farming primals SHOULD have gone up, not down.
Also, I believe my observations to be credible because I have had to farm these A LOT for my tribal leatherworking epic set (I am currently only missing the chest piece), and I also have crafted the
Windscale Hood
So that puts me at approx. 460 motes to date (I already have 8 primals for my chest piece) So needless to say, I have been farming these a lot in the past month or so, and the best success rate has been the Enraged Air Spirits in Shadowmoon, but if the drop rate has been nerfed, it would make me a sad panda.

For a quick tip on where to farm these, there are enraged earth spirits (
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=21060
) in shadowmoon valley that have a regular drop and dont have other players around taking all the kills or if it is a oposing faction killing you. Also not sure if someone has mentioned it but putting the motes on a action bar is a very good way to keep track of how many you grind.

South of Shadowmoon Valley is a great place around 58,71.

Roughly 2 mote for every 2 mobs they were dropping.

From my experience the mote of air are dropped quite frequently from the air elemental mobs near Telaar. The smaller ones.
Highly suggested to kill those or any air elemental on the way as well.
Combine Engineering with Mining and you're gonna get a lot of Adamantite and Fel Iron ore, Motes of Fire and Earth as well.

If you are an engineer, then it's possible to farm for these motes using the
Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
in Nagrand. When running around Nagrand, you'll come across white clouds hovering overground. They are also constantly, but slowly, moving, so they will not remain in the same spot over a length of time.. With the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, you can suck the motes of air right out of them.
Usually you can get between 3-5 motes per cloud this way.
Engineers get the schematic for this device by completing the quest
"The Zapthrottle Mote Extractor!"
(
Horde
//
Alliance
) in Zangarmarsh.
You can use this extractor to acquire motes from other regions of the Outlands as well.

Mother of Jebus. These have to be the most annoying and tedious item drops outside of boss drops. I'm assuming the Wowhead percent numbers count number of motes collected / elementals killed (as opposed to actual % of the time they will drop any) or they carried over obsolete information from previous patches when the rate was much higher, because those numbers are just fairy tales.
The drops at EP is decent enough, but the respawn rate can't handle more then two people at a time before you're just running around an empty field, so unless you can play at 5 in the morning, that's rarely a lucrative spot.
SMV (at least on my server) tends to have few people, but the drop is abysmal, maybe 5-10%.
Unless there's no one else on, or you're one lucky s.o.b., you can probably expect to get maybe one primal an hour. Perhaps that doesn't seem unreasonable to some, but I need 36 of those effers for Windhawk. Yeah.

Get an Engineer to farm the clouds in Nagrand or become an Engineer yourself and use Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, an Engineer tool. You will find more clouds dropping these every time than mindlessly killing Air Elementals. I only got 1 mote after killing for over an hour. Gave up and took to the sky in search of clouds.

Assuming no competition (since not many people farm these) Shadowmoon valley is a much better place to farm these:
Enraged Air Spirit
I was able to farm these, one shotting them, without running out, since the respawn rate is high enough. The elemental plane in nagrand is good, but I cleared them all in about 30 seconds, and then there is a long respawn timer.

I hit a DRY period for a loooooong time while in SMV and was like, "what the hell man for like 20 -30 min or so none. So I go to Nagrand and kill the spirits there and the drop rate is much higher and the dry periods much shorter. I think I farmed 9 primals in 3 hours. Of course it helps if you do massive dps and kill them fast. This will increase your chance to get the motes.

The best way to farm mote of air is with friends that will help you grind for them. Try to find a guild that offers help to those in need. I have helped others in my guild grind for days on end, and in turn they helped me. Its lot more fun in a group. Once you stop trying to do things on your own, you will find that its more fun to work as a group. Each group needs a mote of some type create a group and focus on grinding for one type of mote a day, then switch off to another type.
Or, grind for some quick gold to buy them out of AH. Look... If this is to difficult for you, I suggest that you go outside and run a few laps or something. No one side it would be easy so stop your belly aching and get to work.

In a recent interview the main designer of WoW stated that the single biggest challenge is the rate at which customers consume new content. Clearly Blizzard can address this by spending more of their funds on content creation, putting obstacles in the players path to content, or both. Pretty clearly they have spent a lot more of their resources on the obstacle course. They made getting into end game much more difficult in BC than it was pre-BC (remember when you had to be revered to do heroics?), in fact they made it so hard that for many of us the only way to get gear good enough was to go the crafted route. It all comes down to time. The time you spend grinding is time that you aren't consuming content. A perfect example is the 60% flying mount. If you have to farm on one of these, your grinding time is substantially greater. That it makes no sense that a flying mount is slower than an epic horse is unimportant, its simply another obstacle to content consumption. The epic flying skill is priced at 5K gold for the same reason.
Blizzard really doesn't care about anything more than maximizing the number of subscribers for their minimum investment. Lets all be honest for a second. Wouldn't we really all rather be either raiding (my preference) or PvPing than pretty much any other aspect of this game? You can be sure if one morning folks at Blizzard walked in and 1 million of us cancelled our subscriptions because we have to grind to much, or because the gear bar to get into the raid progression is too high, or the PvP system was to onerous, you'd see a patch that "balanced" those factors differently in less than a week. Then as soon as the subscription rate started to recover things would get progressively harder again. Of course something like 11 million of us are willing to put up with the obstacles to get to the part we enjoy, with new subscribers signing on every day. So this is likely to get worse not better.
My $.02 and worth even less

The drop rates on this mote are stinking big times. As a shaman you have a really hard time killing those mobs since most of them are immune to the lightning. And the amounts needed for your BoP gears are virtualy impossible to get unless you want to spend 2 months grinding. Meanwhile Blizzard is cashing. Is that what you want to pay for? To be alowed to grind yourself to death?
Those that think the drop rates are ok the way they are must be some nolife kids brainwashed to think grinding is ok and have spent so much time in the game they can't make the difference between real life and world of warcraft anymore. Snap out of it you idiots.
There are loads of other things to do and enjoy in this game than grinding.
In the end it's all about money, and Blizzard are some shameless greedy bastards.

Since patch 2.3.0, Motes of Air have become a little bit easier to farm. There are Windy Clouds in Nagrand. An Engineer can use the
Zapthrotle Mote Extractor
on these. And if that Engineer has the
Ultra-Spectroscopic Detection Goggles
(or one of the other types of high-end goggles) he/she can see them on the mini map.
From my limited experience in Extracting motes from Nagrand, it seems that you will get anywhere from 3 to 5 motes per extraction.
Just make laps around Nagrand finding the Windy Clouds until you find out where the most likely spawn points seem to be. It helps to supplement your Gas Cloud farming by killing any of the air elemental mobs that you find on your circuit.
Some of the Windy Clouds can only be harnessed by using a flying mount to get to the floating 'islands' above the ground.
You can extract Motes from various clouds in the following locations:
Air -- Nagrand (Windy Cloud)
Mana -- Netherstorm (Arcane Vortex)
Shadow -- Shadowmoon Valley (Felmist Cloud)
Water -- Zangermarsh (Swamp Gas, pre patch 2.3.0 it was Life)
You still have to mine mineral nodes or kill mobs for Mote of Fire and Herb or kill mobs (or kill mobs, then Herb-skin them) for Mote of Life. Fire and Life motes cannot be Extracted (yet?)
Finally, something useful for Engineers, woohoo!
I hope this doesn't crash the economy for Motes of Air.

Those of you complaining about having killed bunches of these without getting a drop, you also have to keep in mind that sometimes 2 or 3 motes will drop from a single mob. This throws off the drop % shown on thottbot if you're thinking of it as "this mob has a 50% chance to have motes on it!" - if you kill 100 mobs, you've got a good chance to get 50 motes.
You also should note that it's definitely possible to kill 20-30 mobs and not get a mote. It's also possible to kill 3 mobs and get 9 motes. It's the way probability works... sucks, but then again, what doesn't?

16 Mote of water

thanks a ton /\
have fun p.s. i just found green floating gases in shadowmoon valley,(12 hours after i posted the original message)i was wondering if that had anything to with motes of air, like the gases that are found in netherstorm for motes of mana, i'm not able to click or do anything on them but was wondering if you needed a certain something to get them. please respond if you know anything about these, and about anything i wrote above. /\

Right, after 2 months of research from farming taking notes and asking GMs or in forums for wow mechanics, this is the most i have come up with.
(all u people that hate facts, look away .......NOW)
Since computers base their programing know-how and processing on binary language so many possibilities are able to happen yet at anyone point the the "big-ass" WOW master server computer will calculate the same probability over and over. Based on evidence from pattern and asking GMs and technicians abt WOW mechanics it is all based on motes per hour in an area. This is also affected by the presence of other elementals in the area so in fact two things affect drop rate.
1: How many are alive and "kicking" when you kill one in an area
2: How many dropped within the time frame Blizz has set, im not sure but there is a rumor its every 10-15 mins. (which is why you may sometimes experience lulls in drop rate for abt 10mins) think of it like the Starcraft campagn editor of triggers, conditions and actions. so for example;
Every 10-15 mins only 50 motes may drop
Always - At end of cycle drop rate increase 50% multiplied by number of same mobs in area - then regulated so that 50 motes will drop evenly throughout the 15mins.
This is why if there are many farming, you many see a good drop rate at first then slow down as the server is restarting the NPCs drop cycle again.
Tips based on these facts, the obvious...
1. Goto area where not many farming...
2. If you notice slight drop in drop rate .....move on to an area where there are also the same elementals yet far away enough that they have they're own cycle (if you can find one) meaning you have double the rate.
3. once finished with one area move on quickly to the next. Try to finish routine runs within 10-15 mins as this will get the highest drop rate and prevent the loss of any possible motes.

, for farming motes i used the following strategy at elemental plat with the crystal forged axe:
Air Elementals
: fire shock, frost shock, fire totem and i keep water shield on, i farmed this way for over an hour and didnt run out of mana.
Fire Elementals
: frost and earth shock is pretty much all we have.
Earth Elementals
: same as air.
Water Elementals
: Fire and Earth shock, fire totem ect.
Other than that, use resistance totems and mana totem, dont really need the healing totem considering i was good on health unless i had an add, then i just used heal in combat.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Its just a matter of knowing where the possible spawn loctaions are, cause there is always a Wind Cloud in nagrand, and the droprate it +400%, sometimes 3 motes, sometimes 5.

You get to finish a few quests and get motes as a bonus. They dropped regularly there for me so much so i found myself continuing to kill them after i had completed the quest parts. I got enough for 1 primal of each before moving on to next quest part. The quest starts north of the alliance town. I had decent luck farming motes in SMV north of the Altar of Shatar. 32 motes in about an hour. Had the place all to myself
on a Friday afternoon, 1400 server time.

All those mobs: clefthoof, stags and so on.
It dont work with them if u use the mote extractor.

Unfortunately, almost impossible to farm as an ele shaman. Sure you can use frost shock, but its really bad. Maybe you can spec into lower shock CD, but seems bad.. If you can go enhance, probably best for this.

Has anyone actually ever seen these at the vendors listed? Is that in a later release?
