There's three places you can farm motes of fire from mobs. They are:
Elemental Plateau in Nagrand (requires a flying mount).
Northern Blade's Edge Mountains
Shadowmoon Valley (center of the map)
At the time you read this post, regardless of where you live or the time of day, there are three people on your server farming each of those spots. Primal Fires are by the most highly demanded Primal, and so you will find Frost Mages farming the mobs constantly for either tailored items or cold hard gold.

These are also mined rarely from any mining node, but they seem to drop far more often from Hellfire Peninsula mining nodes (probably to give Engineers an early source of motes for their blasting powder)

I've seen Affliction locks solo'ing 3 of the level 70 elementals in Nagrand, at once.
Put a sour taste in my mouth when I was killing one, maybe two, at once as a rogue in lame gear.

They can be mined quite often in Fel Iron Deposits, and imo the place with the most mobs is Shadowmoon Valley, in the center where the 'green' stuff is on the map. Even if there is 3 or more people farming them, there is enough to keep respawning. Best to travel on your flying mount, as there is a few mountains around.
4-5 Primals per hour here as a rogue on average, could be more if better at grinding.

Southwestern corner of Blade Edge there are also fire elementals, place is loaded with demons but the elite ones shouldn't bother you while grinding.

The 2 forge camps in Blade's Edge that bookend Ogri-La had their fire elementals replaced with Felgaurd looking mobs manning cannons.
The cannons will dismount flying players within range if hit. Lets not discuss what happens when you fall into the sea of demons below you that swarm like Sharktacons. For fun, hang high out of range of the cannons and watch other players get taken down as they pass through looking for the fire mobs or trying to get into Ogri-La.
Approximately 12-18 spawn points for fire elementals have been removed from this area. This will cause a lot more traffic in the elemental plateau in Nagrand and the Fel Pits In Shadowmoon Valley as there are a lot fewer places to farm motes for Primal fires.
The value of Primal Fires (and many items made with them) should increase as demand stays steady while the supply dwindles.

Considering how highly NEEDED these are by just about EVERY skill set (particularly tailoring and leatherworking though), Blizzard should really add more places that these can drop.
By the way, the only mentioned places so far are Nagrand, Blade's Edge, and the midddle of Shadowmoon Valley.
Although VERY difficult compared to these 3 places, they can also be farmed up North of Thrallmar (with a flying mount to get there) off of the fire elementals up there. The main reason I say it is so much more difficult is you end up trying to farm around 72 Elites, half of which patrol, and jump you if you aren't careful. I end up basically turning out even with my gear repair vs the elemental fragments that drop for money collected.

I have been farming Shadowmoon for these for the past week. I have made 2500g from them, farming 3 hours a day. I make between 4-7 per hour depending on drops., and there is few competition on my realm(Gorefiend). They sell for 20-27g each, and I found the best time to farm are very early in the morning (2Am-7AM) or in the afternoon (noon-5pm) since thats when most people are asleep, or are coming home from playing WoW at work.

Also, a great tip is to pick up all trash that drops. For every 5 primals I get, I get 15-25g worth of greys/greens of vendoring, and probably much more if I could de.

Well, every server got diffrent cost on diffrent mats. On my server Primal Earth goes for 3-7g. And when Primal Fire, etc goes for at least 17g each. Most of the time Fire is the most expensive one. Goes for up to 25g...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how good the drop rate is off of the Fel-Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaeden. There are quite a few around where Doom Lord Kazzak spawns (which are totally safe and pull separately), and more mixed in with the elites, which, if done correctly, can be pulled one-by-one. I killed 15 of the things, and only one of them didn't drop a Mote of Fire.

Despite what you may see here, it does take ten motes to create a primal. What you see here is actually a quirk of the way Blizzard handles the spell. On Blizzard's end, a two-step process occurs:
You use the first mote, destroying it in the process.
A spell is cast, which destroys the other nine motes, and creates a primal.
This spell here--step two--is the spell that gets listed here on Wowhead.

A great area to farm motes of fire is in
The Throne of Kil'jaeden
, from the fire elementals.
Throne of Kil'jaeden
is in the northeastern part of Hellfire (Place where Doom Lord Kazzak resides).
The fire elementals (Incandescent Fel Sparks) are level 70-72 and I found they dropped motes of fire around 15% of the time. Even better is that you can do the daily quest while you are farming (Collected from Magistrix Seyla).
I found this area to have better drop rate than the fire elementals in Shadowmoon Valley.
Note:
You must have a flying mount to get over the mountains.

I had to get 8 Primal Fires for my turbo charged flying machine so I looked here for good places to farm it.
I can easily say that the Incancdescent Fel Sparks at the Throne of Kil'jaeden in hellfire peninsula are the best mobs to farm motes of fire at level 80. I tried Elemental plateau at first, but after doing 3 aoe pulls I had to wait for over 5 minutes for them to start respawning again ... waste of time.
However, at the throne of Kil'jaeden there will always be fel sparks to kill. It seems like they are forced to respawn if all of them are about to die. The drop rate seemed to be the same as Elemental Plateau but you have 0 downtime (apart from the little flying between each mob). Just bind your flying mount button to a easy to reach key and start killing those fel sparks. I had my flying mount bound to the middle mouse button while I was at this so I could mount easily and fast after each mob.
I got my 8 primal fires in about 20 minutes at the throne of kil'jaeden.

i farmed these in hellfire around the throne of kil'jaeden and got 3 primals in about 30 minutes. sold the all on AH for 30g each.. so 500g in 2 hours doesn't sound to impossible if you know what your doing

i hate farming and almost never do... i decided to farm BEM forge camps (need flying mount to reach) and the fire elementals have an amazing drop rate... if you are in need of cash or primal fires then head to either of the ones west of sylvanar or way up north.

There's an error on this page. It says that it only takes 9 motes of fire to make a primal. How do you go about submitting info on that?

Blade's edge mountain searing elementals spawn fast. But the drop rate is only 25%. Sometimes it feels much lower than that.
There are usually alot of people there Alliance and Horde so expect alot of competition.

Please let ppl know important information like this on these websites/forums. That is the reason we have this and other sites. I couldn't believe how we have at least three sites to post this information like this and you can't find it in any of the sites.
However, you take the time to post information on how it was very easy for you to solo a mob. Use the site to post information about the game, not your personal conquests, please use your head.

Price should drop pretty soon. Now that I'm done with all solo and small group quests - money is no longer piling up. Farming pure gold not relying on AH gives about 30-40% more than farming back in the 60ies. Basically, people are going to get done with quests, will buy there mounts and prices will drop to sane ammounts. These primals are pretty common and final price will probably be below 10G.
And yeah, above elemental throne in nagrand is a great place to farm.

well, i am a 70th rogue, and i killed enraged earth and fire nasties 1 on 1 as fast as i could there and got a total of 5 mote of earth and 14 motes of fire.
So, i think the one post about making 500 gold in 2 hrs there is alittle exagerated. sorry, that was for 1 hard grinding hour.

Guys. this is simple economics. The demand is high for these things so naturaly the price with will increased. Once the demand for such items drop then so will the price. They will go the way of Nexus Shards and Arcane Crystals.

So far my best drop rate from these are from those green fire elementals in Shadowmoon Valley. I forget excatly what they are called...
I farmed 10 fire motes in about 35 minutes or so..

The Elemental Plateau is probobly the worst place to farm these, as it is so heavily farmed by everyone.
Your best bets are in the middle of Shadowmoon Valley, and in the south most demon camp in Blade Edge Mountains.
The later has a few elites though.

Places to farm mote of fire.
Blades edge mountain:

The forge camps to the west, good droprate, easy to kill.
Coord: 30.80 and 33.40
They are few in numbers but are close to eachother and stay at the same position at all times. Also if you are herbalist there are spawning manathistle right beside them.

Not recommended to farm water or earth here, I killed 20 earth elementals and got 2 motes... maybe i was unlucky. Water drops seem to be nerfed as well.

Shadowmoon valley.
Around the center of the map at the hand of Gul'dan, wherever there is green lava there should be fire elementals, heard there is good droprate there, haven't farmed there much myself.

I've got about a 47% drop chance on these from the Enraged Fire Spirits around the Hand of Gul'dan. I've been farming for about... 3 hours now as a raid-specced holy priest (lots of fun when the earthies sneak up on you), but yeah, 3hrs, 52 motes of fire, 1 mote of earth, a decent hunter axe, arcane resist leather gloves and an agility cloak. Not a bad haul imo.

to farm primal fire the absolute best way is to go to blade edge mountains and then farm the searing elementals i think their called. im a mage i ice lance like 5 then put up fire sheild then do arcne explosion till theit all dead if your a mage and you use this stratige make sure you have dampen magic on or these guys will eat you alive.

I prefer going to Shadowmoon valley to the Hand of Gul'Dan. You can get motes of fire and earth and they are all over the place. Theres no need to wait for any respawn. And then if ya wanna farm water motes just go north to coilskar point to kill the water elementals there. They are all called Enraged

After several hours of farming in both Shadowmoon Valley and the Elemental Plateau I got a drop rate of 37% from Shadowmoon Valley and 85% from the Elemental Plateau.
However, there are also the considerations that the mobs in Shadowmoon Valley are far easier to kill than the mob on the Plateau with 30% less HP, 6k vs 9k, so survivial is easier for soloing. It is also more difficult to keep up with the respawn rate unless there are a few more farmers in the area with you. The Plateau isn't really tuned for more than 1 or 2 farmers in each area at a time.
I haven't tried Blade Edge yet so I can't comment on that area.

From my experience, the best droprate is ele plateau, hands down. But, factor in the constant farming from other players (your faction or not) and the overall outcome evens out with both BEM and SMV; not to mention they have a lot more hp and have a fireshield. BEM has a SLIGHTLY better drop rate than SMV, but with all the baskilisks and imps running around, on top of other farmers in a very small area, your overall outcome is probably the lowest for the most effort.
The droprate in SMV can be pretty sad at times, and you can go for several kills without getting one, but that can be said about anywhere. The simple fact that these are lvl 65-67 mobs, without a fireshield, spread very abundantly over a large area, makes this the ideal place to farm. There can be 3 or 4 other farmers in the area, and you can still stock up without too much elbow rubbing. The green lava pools and occasional earth elemental/spawn of Uveros that pats through can be kind of a nuisance, but are all easily circumvented with a little ingenuity. - Plan on maybe 2-4 primals an hour, depending on luck.

If you want to farm at least 4 primals/hour on average, Skald in BeM is the best choice.
And you're hearing this from a fire mage with no points in frost at all.
Your goal is to pull a group of 3-4. There are only a couple areas that you can do this.
NOTE: This is best on a level 70.
If you see a group of 3-4 within reasonable range of each other without many basilisks/scorch imps nearby, here's what you do:
1. Head on your flying mount to one of the tiny hills that are everywhere.
Make sure you've got dampen magic, mage armor, and arcane intellect on.
2. Some people like to put on fire ward here, but I wait for later. Now, use ice lance to pull all the elementals.
3. Once the elementals are in the same area frost nova them, and back away a few steps. Here's where I put on fire ward so that when frost nova breaks, their attacks will be absorbed and they won't interrupt the end of blizzard.
4. You guessed it- use blizzard until they charge at you.
5. Cone of cold.
6. Run around in circles using arcane explosion. One of my early mistakes was to run around backwards. This doesn't work, because it decreases your speed and the elementals can catch up to you. Wasn't decreasing their speed the whole point of cone of cold?
In a perfect world, that will happen. Sometimes, there’s only one that you can pull at a time. If so:
1. Get near, with arcane intellect, dampen magic, and mage armor.
2. Pull with a frostbolt, then arcane missiles.
3. When the mob gets to you, frost nova it, and ice lance it until the nova breaks. This is because ice lance’s damage is 3x when a mob is frozen.
Here was my loot ‘graph’ on motes of fire for 1 hour:
First 15 minutes: 0-1-0-0-0-0-1-2-0-1-0-2-0-0-0-2
15-30: 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-2-1-1-0-0-0-1-0-0
30-45: 0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0-2-0
45-60: 0-1-0-0-0-0-2-0-1-1-0-0-0-2-1-2-0-0-0
You’re probably thinking, “
But wait, Joey, that’s only 2 primals and 8 motes! Not 4 primals like you promised!
” about now.
My answer is that I was very disadvantaged in this experiment. Consider the following:
(1)
This was my first time trying this.
I’d watched videos on youtube before of this method, but never tried it. This means less kills and more potions used. Notice how I was still learning- the first 15 minutes, I had 16 kills, the next 30 minutes, 17 kills per every 15 minutes, and the last 15 minutes, 19 kills.
(2)
I was keeping a ‘loot graph’.
This means more time writing and less time killing.
(3)
I was specced POM-pyro with no points in frost.
Speaks for itself.
(4)
I had competition.
In my realm, this place is usually deserted, but in this experiment I had 1 (and 2 later on) players of the opposite faction competing with me. And they were both level 70, which is important because…
(5)
MOST IMPORTANTLY: I was not yet level 70, but 69 in this experiment.
It might not seem like a lot, but here’s three good reasons it slowed me down:
(a) Obviously, I didn’t have any of my level 70 training (I actually didn’t have 69 training at the time).
(b) I didn’t have my level 70 gear.
(c) I didn’t have a flying mount. This meant that my competition could get around faster than I could, and could see the locations of the mobs from above. Not only did this slow me down, but also it sped my competition up.
So at level 70, you should do better than me.
Overall, this place had a 40.6% (28/69) droprate for me.
If you go on youtube and search “primal fire farming”, you will get many videos showing this method.

Farming for primal fire with fire mage is really nightmare so I suggest respec to frost and then farm for primals. When you done just respec back to mighty fire and whola ;)

it has been my experience that farming at SMV works better than anyplace ive been to, however if u are an early bird, if u can get to elemental plateau early enough you will have motes of fire galour, it happened to me today :P hope this helps

best way to farm this is mining, ive gotten bout 20 primal fires from just mining nethercite, fel iron, or adamantite deposits
u get gems and ores, along with primals so its easy money

Yes, the Throne of Kil'Jaeden in Hellfire, where the Shattered Sun Offensive daily quest is... That is THE place to farm them. I have gotten about 20 motes (2 primals) in doing the daily just twice. They drop 2 at a time very often. That number would go way up if one were to actively farm them!

I'm only level 60 and i get loads of motes (both earth and fire) from mining fel iron... plus i can sell/prospect the ore so its a win win situation. i alreay got like 5 primals of each just from mining.

After finding the elemental plateau a complete waste of time due to the incredible competition, i searched for alternatives. I tried mining fel iron ore to see if i got a decent amount of motes of fire, in the end i got 60 fel iron ore, and 9 motes of fire. If you asssume that each vein gives 3 ore, thats averages to a little less than a mote a vein, not bad i guess... The i went to the throne of kil'jadeen, (does require flying mount), and farmed for about a 1/2 hr, i received 2.2 primals there, with minimal competition. So, i would highly recommend the throne of kil'jadeen in hellfire pennisula as the best place that i have seen to farm primal fires.
I also tried SMV, the enemies are easy to kill, but rarely seemed to drop motes. I gave up after about 40 kills and 4 motes.

These go for about 20g a pop on my server, and nobody farms them. VERY useful source of money.
