One time, I was bored, and had a thought: Can this item actually kill you, or does it act like a warlock's lifetap spell? (Doesn't take HP when the amount to be taken is greater than your current health, and displays 'Fizzled' as an error message)
To test this theory, I got:
-One dark rune I got in Scholomance before.
-My level 4 mage alt :D

-Walked into the 'center' of stormwind's trade district in case I did happen to die.(I wanted to make people say "WTF?" as always)
-Used it, bam, instant death, it was like I just feigned death, exept, obviously, I -was- dead :P

I don't believe it did armour damage, since it is effectively a 'suicide effect' (Much like when I hellfire myself to death)

To answer the questions of Syrah and wutdaheck:

Firstly, after testing with two runes and watching closely, I found that this item does NOT trigger the global cooldown.

Additionally, this does not proc Earth Shield when it harms you. I would then guess that it also does not proc Prayer of Mending. For Priests, though, remember that Shadow Word: Death does proc Prayer of Mending, so that's an alternative.

After reading that it is possible to die from these, I'm wondering: what happens if a level 20 naked Bloof Elf Mage (least stamina) uses these in Arathi Basin? Can they then commence the flag-ninja trick? Or has Blizzard countered this somehow?

This is a werry hard item to get when you realy need it, you need 5 of them for the paladin epic mount q and they never drop once you need em, and the fue thats on AH sells for insane prices up to 40g sometimes. I recomend you paladins out there to get a guildrun in Scholo and just farm farm farm it will take a day, maybe 2 but you get your Runes.

Funny thing with Dark Runes is that they turn extremely dark when you pick them up inside your inventory. This is because of the black/blue combination, but one doesn't see it with many items.

Fantastically useful item for paladins of any spec, as it can refund up to an extra 100 mana thanks to Spiritual Attunement (provided someone else heals the paladin after use). For holy, extra mana is extra healing, and always welcome. For prot, extra mana is extra threat, and there aren't a lot of fights where a 1k health hit at a controlled, appropriate time (ie. near full health) is going to cause a death. For a ret paladin, their gear lacks pretty much any mana regen, so having these available is a great way to further increase dps.

Actually, now that I think about it, they're really useful for pretty much any mana using class in the game, save locks. ^^ Any serious raider should get a few of these (or Demonic Runes as I prefer, due to the fact that these AH for a bundle and Demonic Runes are soulbound ^^) for use on at least progression fights.

I have been saving up for my Pally's epic mount and this is the only thing that is eluding me. On my server, these babies are selling for 25g if you are lucky. The whole deal is that since these are from Sholomance, they are pretty rare on the AH (then again my serer is pretty lame). So far, I have 2 and am bidding on a third though they are just so expensive for a 55 who's guildmates decided to stop playing once they got their epic flyings... The point is, no guild wants to farm these babies because there is not point in farming a pre BC endgame dungeon. Until Wrath comes out, no one is going to be able to handle it alone, either. So, either find a guild that will roll with you on it or just keep finding groups for them. AH prices are rediculous...

We've decided that these may be useful for the Kaz'rogal fight in Mount Hyjal. Given the critical importance of mana-based DPS keeping themselves topped off on mana on this fight, and the relative lack of widespread raid damage to stress healers and make bandaging impossible, having an item that refunds mana without consuming a potion cooldown would be very nice to have for hunters, shaman, and druids in the raid.

Tired of seeing Dark Runes on the AH for insane prices? (40-100g Depending on server)

Fear not for a solution has appeared!

Dark Runes can be found only in Scholomance. Lucky for you the mobs that must be killed are both weak and soloable to any 70. In every Scholomance run there are exactly 6 Dark Summoners (Located in the Circle of Summoning) and about 5 to 9 Necromancers in the room after. With a 15% drop rate off Necromancers and 12% drop rate off Dark Summoners you are statistically bound to get at least 1 Dark Rune per run.

For those who have not been to Scholomance:

As you enter the instance clear the 4 Skeleton guards in the first room. Open the gate and proceed to turn left. Go down the stairs (you should be able to walk past the mobs at the bottom of the stairs) Go through the gate and proceed into the next room. This room is the first place you can farm the Dark runes. *Note: There are ALWAYS 6 Dark Summoners in this room* After you have obliterated all of the summoners open the gate to the next room. In this room there are around 5 to 9 Necromancers accompanied by random mobs. After you have cleared the room go out and reset the instance.

Do this as many times as you need to.

TIP:
1. Kill the Dark Summoners first! They spawn annoying adds that can stack up damage if you are a class with out AoE.
2. Spectral Tutors, once attacked, split into 8 to 10 images. Once returned to their original form they will have healed a portion of their hp. (Kill them last)
3. Want to make extra money? Well who doesn't! The Spectral Researchers in the first room have a 5% chance to drop . There are about 5 Researchers in the first room (this is the only room that they will spawn in), the chance you will get a Formula is around 25% (every 4 runs you'll get a formula, statistically speaking). This can fetch up to 100g on the AH.

On a good run I usually make up to 160g in dark runes and 100g for a formula.

If you are looking to save a little bit of gold, at level 61 the Paladin mount is available as of patch 3.0.3 at trainer meaning that you do not need 6 of these runes to prove your loyalty to the blood knights anymore.

With the change that made potions only usable once per fight no matter how long the fight is, these items are once again amazing for healers at level 80. It's astonishing that Blizzard hasn't either made a higher-level version of these or nerfed them to have a "reduced effect" for players above level 60.

I use these and Demonic Runes in emergencies. Try not to waste them when soloing or doing inconsequential stuff, as they can be quite expensive and rare.

These got nerfed in 3.0.8 to a 15 minute shared cooldown with healthstones/demonic runes.

Also, as of 3.2, these only trigger a 2 minute cooldown on healthstones instead of 15 minutes.

This rune works against General Vezax. The 15min CD means you'll only want to use it as a last resort, but it's definatly worth taking to the fight.

There is no such thing as "statistically bound."

Not quite correct. If the chance of not getting one was less than say, 0.5%, then we could say that you'd be "statistically bound" to get one. of course, i take bound to mean "almost impossible not to happen" rather than certain.

Anyhow, in this case, with 5 necromancers and 6 dark summoners, with the drop rates listed above, the chance of not getting a rune is 20%. With 9 necromancers, the chance of a runeless run drops to 10%. I'd hardly call that bound to get a rune. however, the odds are in the rune-seeker's favor by a fair margin.

^Verified. The gold spammers on our server will do it in the middle of the day with half of SW watching, they don't care. You can actually watch them inch up, higher and higher (about a quarter inch at a time) until they're out of sight, then they just fall and die. I'm pretty sure they just use the free account trials to do this, and I'm willing to bet the bigger companies have scripts written to automate and perfect the process.

Are these not a common drop? I went to AH to buy 5 for my lvl 60 pally quest and there were only 2 on there! I thought there would be many more due to it being a quest item for the pally quest/epic mount quest?

Actually a more useful item than many people reasise. I use them for my priest for MC all the time (easier to farm these than the demonic runes).

Low on mana, burn one of these and gain say 1200 mana, use 300 of that to renew myself to recover the lost HP and go on healing.

Dark Runes are required for some of the quests in Silithus. They are needed to create a crest of Fire/Air/Water beckoning.

It appears that at least one of the summonable bosses in the new tier 0.5 set questlines will do some insane shadow damage, so keep these for the stygian gear. Stygian gear is to shadow as Dark Iron is to fire (sort of).

thanks a lot blizzard for nerfing the droprate to hell and then requiring that many for the BE mount quest. We're by Rattlegore now and ZERO drops so far.

In my experience the drop rate is lower than it's here but maybe I was just unlucky. I went 5 runs and keeled 19 dark summoners/necromancers each.

1st run got 1 Dark Rune (5% drop)

2nd run got 3 Dark Rune (16% drop)

3rd run got 0 Dark Rune (0% drop)

4th run got 0 Dark Rune (0% drop)

5th run got 1 Dark Rune (5% drop)

So out of 95 mobs I got 5 drops, which is 5,3% drop rate.

The price of these has soared from like 2g to 20g with the pally epic quest, and also because of the fact that nobody runs scholo anymore for any reason. You can't find these in the AH and you won;t be finding groups to run through scholo either. I had my alt hunter farm the trash mobs that drop these but it was difficult and they have a low droprate. Sucks if you don;t have a high level alt.

Using this while in a divine shield? I am completely unsure as to whether the health loss would still occur or not. I mean, divine shield by its very nature makes you immune to all damage (even fall damage which no other damage prevention technique can stop, ie PW:S or even BoP), but in order to keep things fair, you'd think that you should still take damage. Anyone wanna try it out? I would, but it's hard enough getting them anymore as is.

On that note, anyone know if you still take damage from BoSac with divine shield on? Though that is getting off topic...

Needed 5 for my pally quest, i couldnt get them to drop off the necromancers very often, it seems they are more likely to drop off of bosses now since it has apparently been updated a few times. If i had to guess i say each boss has a 40% and the necromancers and some of the others have like 5%, regardless of what the old statistics say.

For the Price I've seen Dark Runes in the ah going for, it was cheaper for me to pay some level 70's to run me through Scholo a few times.

Price for 5 in ah:200 gold (40 a piece)
Cost of getting 4 70's to run me, 60 gold 15 a piece.

Might have cost me more to get the runes from runing, since they were charging by the run, but about 30 had dropped by the end, so I gave my spares to level 59-60 pallies.

This is how I make money on Alliance. I farm the hell out of these, and transfer them to my Horde account through the BB AH. They sell like hot cakes over there, netting me a good 10g each.

I swear to god - Blizzard is pure bloody evil for doing this to palidans, especially ones on low pop servers. On mine - Scholo is lucky if it gets run once - even twice a day. THerefor there are very rarely to never any of these in the ah, itss nearly impossible to get a group to run it - and the drop rate is so horrendous -

I ran the begining and middle parts of this instance twice and only saw it drop once - I had to roll against another palidan to recieve it - I was fortunate to get one at all - the other guy walked away empty-handed -

Wow! I was just reading the first posts to the last. The drop rate must have dropped dramaticly from when they were first put in. That is not very bright of Blizzard. By the way, pallys are not the only ones who can use these; tailors and blacksmiths can use them too, for some rather nice recipes. True pallies are having a difficult time but then they should set up a party to do it, (explain the need to the other party members, first, so no one gets ticked about you needing all the time) I'm planning to set up a party with guild members so i can get the blacksmithing recipes from a ghost vender found there.

Tips if you are a lvl 70 farming for your alt paladin you'll need 5 of those for the quest so here we go:
First of all you must be a lvl 70 for fast farming once you enter scholo you kill the 4 first guards once you enter you can skip the first chamber without touching any mob in there, in the second chamber where the dark-summoners are is your objective i cleared that room 4 times and got 5 dark runes don't go further than this once you clear the room zone out reset and do the same till you get all dark runes, dark-summoners have a really nice drop rate plus the nice runecloth drop rate , nice silver drop, got 2 blues in my 5 runs, 2 greens and some crap well that's up to you now, it shouldn't take longer than 30minutes.
Note: if you are a warlock don't use the aoe dot or you somehow will aggro mobs from another room.

Thank god they aren't BoP. With the current drop rate and the fact that no one really runs scholo anymore, finding some of these on the AH as a BE pally makes the epic mount quest so much easier. They're going for around 12g each on Moonrunner, horde side.

Just found out now, you need your Epic Mount training to get your Flying Mount training. While it may seem easy enough to solo through some of these areas, it's by no means any cheaper to acquire the Arcanite Bars, nor is it any fun to run back to all the old stomping grounds just so you can actually get around Blade's Edge. Thinking it may be cheaper in the long run to get a Choco-Epic rather than this pally chain...and the Pristing Black Diamonds, hell if I can find those cheap on the AH, let alone try and farm them. Oh well...

Farmed these for my blood elf pala with my main, full blue prot warrior. I tried both dual wield and 1h+shield combo and the shield was better at the bigger pulls. You kill a little slower but you don't have to spend much time eating.

What I do is first I kill the two skeleton guards closest to the first door, run down the stairs and bypass the groups on each side of the second door, just run in the middle between them and open the door and they won't aggro.

Now you have reached the place to farm Dark Runes, each group has one summoner in it. Clear the pats so you get as smooth farming as possible. Then go ahead and kill the groups. Be aware that the summoners walk a few steps between their summonings, so having improved shield bash could help giving you enough time to pull them away from the other groups. IF you would aggro too many mobs then just run up and straight out. It doesnt matter if you pull any additional mobs, they can't kill you.

When you are done with that room go ahead and open the third door. This room can be annoying if you pull in the wrong order so make sure you can LOS pull them into the previous room, these guys run at low health.

I just cleared these two rooms ONCE to get all my dark runes, so the drop rate must've been buffed and not nerfed as some ppl claim here. The drop rate must be at least 10% from my experience. The low drop rate might be because of old data from the glory days when Scholo were as Kara is now.

Do note that this is written out of the perspective of a protection warrior with no spectacular gear at all. I think a dps warrior would experience it easier due to faster kills.

Also, this is nothing I have tried on Scholo but it works on Dire Maul locked doors, if you don't have the key you can kite a mob from Sorrow Hill (or maybe the lake if there's any mobs there, never checked) and let it kill you near the door. Then run with your corpse inside the door and rez. Tada! No need to get the key. As I said this should be confirmed by someone as I only did this on DM. Be sure to unequip your precious gear before doing this.

im a 68 rogue and my friend is a 60 palli. he needs these for his palli mount. on our server aggamagan they havn't been up on the AH for a while so we diceded to 2 man Scholo. I would just tank the mobs while he healed me {hes ret too} we'd get to the room with the summoners and kill everyone in there and just reset the instance then juts do this continuisly til he got all 5 Dark Runes.

Trick to get into Scholo if you have no key is, i Rode on my My mount, with all my Armor off, near the door, there is a Ledge you can keep riding off to take dmg, till your less then 1 hundred health if you time it correctly. then run up the stairs and Jump off the Building near the entrence. Unfortunatly my 64 Warrior is not enough to kill groups of 3 or more. and i cant just walk through the doors passed the guys. But just thought i would post a Helpful note on getting in with no Key

Requires 5 of these Dark Runes, I tried solo on here as a 66 Protadin, it does not work! Most mobs are green and there a truckload of casters in every room, which even though is bad, is kinda good also, as the only 2 normal mobs that can drop these are either the Necromancers or the Dark summoners in scholomance + 4 bosses which are:

Instructor Malicia in Scholomance
Lady Illucia Barov in Scholomance
Lorekeeper Polkelt in Scholomance
The Ravenian in Scholomance

Cleared virtually every room to Rattlegore and I got 2 runes so far, making the droprate teh suxx (worst possible), sadly the 3 others I went with where 55-56ish and could not offer so much dps wise making the farming run tedious and so long that i grew tired after 3 hours give or take some, but then again, getting any lvl 60+ in a pug wanting to go there is virtually impossible, except if they are BE Paladins - but really, would you like to roll on the 5-6 that drop in 1 run?

Do these only drop inside Scholomance, or is there a chance elsewhere? (I only see scholo listed in the drop table, but i don't always trust everything i see online)

There are apparently some new tailoring and blacksmithing patterns that need these as materials, so they're not just spellcaster loot. I was in a scholomance run where a spellcaster insisted that only spellcasters rolled on them. Don't let them do that if you're a blacksmith or a tailor. Tell them about these patterns.

Man I went into Scholo on the bugged mobs and they dropped on everyone of them. Got the Stygian leggings pattern in the bag from the Chapters Quest in Silithus and sent it to my alt. Drop rate for this week should be 100%. Tailors/ BSers should be the only ones to roll for them now for the patterns, unless Blizz adds some enchantment recipe later for weapons.

Though the drop rate isn't great, there is a room really close to the entrance that has quite a few dark summoners and necromancers. Just go in the entrance, kill the guards outside the gate, and open the gate. Then take an immediate left down the stairs and kill the mob standing near another gate. Open the gate and go through the small hallway to another gate and open that. This is the room. Kill everything in the room, and usually you can get at least one to drop. Then go back out the entrance, reset, and come back in and do it again until you have as many as you need.

Not too bad, especially if you have a level 80 toon to do it with (like I did). I got all five that I needed for my pally in under an hour.

Well, the .02% drop must have been buffed cuz i was in Scholo yesterday and about 3 of them droped in one run. Mobs were also dying standing up, so maybe the patch bugged it a bit. GET EM NOW!

I can confirm that Dark Runes no longer have huge drop rate on necromancers/summoners as they did before phase 5. It could be that Blizzard nerfed it because of bots, but it might be just a normal change for this phase too.

Update to drop rates:

It seems that with some recent changes to Ulduar raid, among undocumented changes was nerf to drop rates of dark runes, you get now less commonly from 6 minibosses before 黑暗院长加丁 when you got before making these more time consuming items to farm.

That is second nerf to droprates first was at start of wotlk classic when dark summoner drop rates did drop as well.
