When it was first implemented, that sword wasn't BoP, so you could get it and send it to a lvl 1 alt and he would be one shotting every mob. They fixed it but they have to add the level requirement, that's why it's the only quest reward that has a level requirement.

Look around the Internets, and you'll see this sword typically gets a bad rap.

Compared to the trinket and ring rewards for your paladin level 50 quest, yes, the sword may seem underpowered. But I chose it, enchanted it (demon slayer) and have it armed. I expect to use it until my high 50's.

If you have the coin for a good blue when you turn 50, hey, more power to you. But if you're like me and saving toward your level 60 mount, you may want to consider this free weapon. The level 50 paladin quest is one of the easier Sunken Temple quests at that level. (Just ask a druid.)

Try finding another weapon at this level with this damage range and bonuses. Sure, there's the Lavastone Hammer, but good luck running the BRD at level 53, good group or not.

I'll use Lightforged Blade with a smile until I hit Outland. Nothing replaces my beloved Verigan's Fist, but I've grown quite fond of this one, too.

(Edited to add: If you enchant your weapons for "looks," don't bother with this sword. I haven't tested this beyond demon slayer, but this sword came factory standard with a pale white glow. The demon slayer enchant glow does not show up. I needed/wanted demon slayer, glow or no glow, so it made no never-mind to me.)

Updated for 3.3.x: I stand by my assertion that this is a good choice from available quest rewards. If you look for a two-handed weapon from quest rewards between levels 40-57, it is still the most viable option unless you (a) are a death knight, (b) are Horde, (c) want to invest in a Dark Moon deck or (d) complete a dungeon quest for places even more awful than the Sunken Temple. (Dire Maul *shudder*.)

Look ahead to 4.x, and this will weapon will be strength/stamina/intellect. Whether intellect can benefit Paladin two-handed DPS dealers even a little remains to be seen as talent trees are in flux. (This comment was updated during open beta.) Hey, it could do double-duty for retribution and lazy or cheap holy paladins. This weapon would be more beneficial with more strength and intellect and less resistance, but Vanilla (and TBC) stat distribution ain't perfect. (Defense/spirit shoulders, anyone?)

This sword is nice no doubt, but at the level you can get it you can also get the ice barbed spear from winning just 1 Alterac Valley BG which blow this away for a ret pally. Holy/Prot pallies don't use 2handers so really its only a ret spec that would choose this.

So pick the ring or trinket and go get the AV polearm if you are looking for a new 2hander.

I just don't get this reward. It's much to fast to take full advantage of a ret paladin's seal of command.
Please, spend an hour or two to get https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=19106 for free, and take another reward.

Getting a good group for ST and do all the pre-quests before actually takes more time than an AV win IMO :p So, even by "time is money" logic, this item is more expensive than the spear.

Its a shame, That blizzard forgot to go back and re-work this swords stats, As they did with the low-level Horde Ranseur, It would have been nice for them to make this some-what usefull :)

The sword definitely isn't the best piece of gear you can get at this level, but it's not directly bad. The orb isn't bad, but I dislike trinkets that don't have passive abilities at all. I didn't consider the ring, I had the 38 and the 48 rings from WSG. The sword is better for Holy than it is for Retribution with its current stats. My paladin was using the Ravager still when I did this quest (and I was questing with a friend who dislikes PvP, so no AV for me), and I chose the sword. It was still an upgrade over the Ravager, plus it was better than my other combination for Holy. (The RNG did not let me find a good spellcaster weapon and I refused to keep harping the same instances over and over just for a chance at one.)

Plus, it is a damn fine looking sword.

the way most class-only quests work, is that each reward has it's own purpose, the melee sword(no healing stats at all), healing ring(no dmg stats at all) and spell/melee ring with only crit % obviously, you would not pick the sword to get spirit or anything of the sort...if u were u would pick the healing ring, they make it to where the reward is not hybrid, making it *!@#ty as hell, they do this all the time it seems like...anyways get the ring imo...sword resists, i dont' play pally but i imagine the resists are useful...eh whatever.

Why the level cap..? Well its a funny story.

Upon release of this quest, blizzard forgot to make this BoP.

So you has a 2-h 40+ dps sword that was BIND ON EQUIP and no level cap.

Paladin were getting the sword, reolized its BOE and m,ailed it to alt characters.

For a little while, starting zones were filled with alt warriors and stuff level 1-10 using a 2-h 40+ dps sword...

So blizz quickly added in the level cap, to at least make them be forced to use it at hte right level.

But you can still find warriors 47+ with this sword.. And you know they got to be happy with there odd paladin sword of doom!

Well its an ok sword i mean slow = lots of dmg per swing. but thing about it. Get the quest for AV and get the polearm form it. it has as much DPS as a lvl 58 wepn AND u can get it at lvl 51. but if u get say the shield from ST and the mace from AV and want a 2 hnd wep for w/e i suppose this isnt too bad.

I just got the quest for it. but when I am finishing, there is no way I am getting this. I got Sultharaze anyways, and prolly gonna be using that for like 5 lvl at least. Gonna get the ring for sure.

ok all of you are saying this is bad for tanking but if you are a retribution spec this is really good. i recomend this sword to all the people who are ret specs but if you are holy or protectiong get the ring or trinket.

LVL 52. it is a pretty easy quest. but DONT get this sword. it is not worth it. go for the trinket imo. i have the trinket and i like the crits it gives on healing and striking. i am a LVL 53 pally and my @h sword is not the best but it beats the heack out of this.

also why do you need all this resistance? we have some wonderfull auras that help with resistance. im cap'ed as soon as i put on a aura anyway. i have + resistance to my cloak ;)

Ok, what i think im gonna do, is get the sword, and the 1h hammer from AV, + crest of supremacy from ST till outland and get +3 damage or something with a glo on the sword.

As of the new talent trees(implemented as of 2.0) this sword is good for a ret pally with Crusader Strike. This attack does weapon damage+40% of your holy damage, any +damage will benefit this attack. So I believe that this sword is fairly good for a Ret paladin.

This is probably no good for holy or prot spec'd pallies. If you're prot, shield and sword is the way to go. Holy, you want the other one that increases healing, duh. But this is not so bad for ret spec'd pallies. You get your 2h specialization and you're set to go. It's slow but it's got nice enchants and does nice damage. Holds good agro and looks nice. =)

dude this sword sucks...for holy, prot, AND ret. I highly recommend getting the Ice Barbed Spear(if you're ret), which is WAY better.

how come every1 is saying to get ice barbed spear? sure it may be good but not every1 wants to do pvp... or just dont feel like it or maby they cant win a game or cba to wait to get in.... i think this sword is quite good and if you want u can use it in AV when you try to get the spear :)

It's a reward from the new 1.8 Paladin Quest.

Paladins do this quest as fast as you can and send it to a level 1 warrior alt.

The quest requirement for this is 50 and for iced barb spear its 51...Not worth one lvl..Plus you gain about 9 DPS with barb spear

Its clearly a Paladin Sword. i would had keep it for myself and no other one, stupid people makes a warrior lvl 1 and give that sword to him and show off that sword its no big deal its just waste! you make that warrior or paladin lvl 1 and show it to the ppl in IF or SW hey look at me! i got a paladin sword oh how cool i am and i pwn so good, well not true, my pala lvl 47 doesnt need to hit a lvl 1 guy to kill/defeat him i only cast a judgement at him that deals holy damage and BAM waste of sword. Blizz didnt think anyone would be that dumb to give it to another guy or char, that sword is good! so keep it for your paladin not some low lvl $%^& man its just W A S T E of time and effort, 1 week after, oh i got lvl 1 warrior i forgot !DELETE!

For a lvl 51, this is a horrible 2h sword especially for a pally, i say lower the dps to 38 make the quest for BRD or DM and make it 1h then you've got a pally sword, at lvl 47 you can have The Truesilver champion 45 dps and as soon as you go in Maraudon you can get The Princess's Sceptre which is 46.5dps and as a pally at lvl 50+ you should fall into your tank roll and if you're going in ST you're going for the Chrest of Supremacy, come on blizz get it together.

tbqh im not sure if i should bother to get this or just get IBS, cuz this sword is a bit faster+gives holy damage(both are good for SoC ret pallies) but IBS has more DPS and better stats. Someone on my server had done just that- given it to his lvl 2 Gnome Warrior. He was in Goldshire dueling - and wiping people out. It was hysterical. He was naked except for that big, dang glowing sword! And having tons of fun.

The description is wrong (even in-game). It says BoE when you link it, but when you receive the reward, it is soulbound in the bag. Confirmed this with 4 pallies just now, after running ST with them to finish off the series.

For those still interested, talk to the Pally trainer in the Cathedral in SW. Then go to Chillwind point for the next leg, which requires collecting 20 minion's scourgestones. Turn that in at Uther's tomb, then go to ST for the last leg. Kill all the named trolls up on the balconies, and they'll drop the feathers you need. Then turn it in to get the BIND ON PICKUP rewards.
