NOTE: This can only be caught during fishing tournaments which are 2pm-4pm server time on Sundays. If you lookup droprate on other sites, they can't account for this so the droprate looks horribly low. It's not as hard as it looks. If you are collecting your pimpadelic fishing gear - the quest reward will be your headpiece. :-)

Fished most often from Southern Savage Coast and Wild Shore in STV.

This is a pain in the arse to find, but if you have the patience to deal with the fishing tournament gank squads (if you have those on your server) then go for it.

That item is BoP so you can't sell it. No level requirement for reward.

It should be noted that this fish, along with the rest of the tournament fish, only spawn in the 'Tastyfish' pools.

there is a bug with the fish loot when the "looting this item will bind it to you" comes up
dont shift click the bobber or it will go away. in meaning you cant catch any of the 3 rare fish because of it or it cancels and will go away make sure you dont hold shift for the quick loot system!

From my point of view being a 19 twink doing this quest I am finding that the best place to fishing with no enemies around is at (26.1, 67.6) and (27.1, 67.7)

i still havent actually caught the fish but im going off the map above and there are like 0 enemies near those spots...
Actually there is one... a Bloodsail Raider, Id just have a higher smack him up then go onto fishing...

This item is part of the Stranglethorn Vale Fishing Competition. Which takes place every Sunday between 14:00 and 16:00 Server time.

These are the items that can be won if you are the first person to hand in 40 Speckled Tastyfish to Riggle Bassbait in Bootybay.
Arcanite Fishing Pole and Hook of the Master Angler.

Once someone has won the fishing competition, you can still hand in your remaining Speckled Tastyfish to Jang in Bootybay. (repeatable quest)

You need 225 fishing to catch this fish. You can get it a variety of ways with actual fishing skills of 120 or a bit easier with skills of 150.

There are 3 uncommon fish that you can catch in Tastyfish schools. This all happens during the STV fishing contest from 2-4 server time every sunday. Tastyfish schools spawn all over the coast. You can fish until 4 server time and have until 5 server time for completing the quest. Keefer's Angelfish is the fish to go for if you want the hat.

Ok, I did these stats AGAIN, please upvote this post so it doesn't get deleted another time. Since people didn't seem to understand how I got these numbers before, I will explain them.

When thottbot tracks data, it does not (and probably cannot) record conditions such as if a fishing bobber was inside a tastyfish spawn. Therefore, it isn't possible to get a "droprate" for the fish. So, the only way to get a feel for how often the rare fish drop is to compare its data to that of tastyfish, since tastyfish are the only other item caught exclusively under the exact same conditions as the rare fish. Fortunately, we know the number of tastyfish that have been caught, as well as how many rare fish.

This logic would be flawed if, for example, tastyfish could be caught in the competition long before rare fish were added, therefore making the tastyfish seem more common. Since, to my knowledge, the rare fish always have been there since the competition started, we can simply divide the number of rare fish caught by the number of tastyfish. Note that this does not take into account the other items that can be fished from tastyfish spawns (stranglekelp, oily blackmouths, ect), so a more accurate description would be for any number of tastyfish caught, an average of x% will be rare, where x is the following:

Keefer's Angelfish: 0.25% (1 in every 400 tastyfish)

Dezien Queenfish: 0.22% (1 in every 450 tastyfish)

Brownell's Blue Striped Racer : 0.18% (1 in every 550 tastyfish)

ANY rare fish: 0.65% (1 in every 150 tastyfish)

So if you were to catch 100 tastyfish every Sunday (which is about how many I usually get), you would have a 22% chance to get the Angelfish, or a 48% chance to get any rare fish. Personally, I've probably caught around 750-1000 tastyfish, and have found 3 x Dezien Queenfish. My chance of finding an angelfish with that many caught is somewhere around 90%. I shall keep on trying...

I don't see why Blizzard would make the droprates different for each individual fish, so we can probably assume that they share the same rate (The average is 0.22%). With this in mind, there is obviously a rather large margain of error for these rates. This is because there is very little data on thottbot for the fishing competition (only a total of 233 rare fish are recorded at this time). If you wish to help, run thottbot while you farm and upload your data.

I was wanting to confirm a question that has been stirring for a while now... is there a limit to only one person every Sunday that can catch each of the rare fish as well? Or can as many people that catch the thing throughout the whole 2 hours, win the prize?

I might be just lucky, but I got all three rare fishes on three competitions in a row (at one I won the pole)...I really dont see a possibility not to catch one rare if u fish from 2-4 PM in schools... I am 99% sure that you can't catch same rare fish twice (if u already got reward), anallogicly to other quest items... So its poles in hands ppl!

PS. I'm still looking forward to 2nd win and that hook trinket... Day before yesterday I was on 36 tastyfish and got 4 stranglekelps from last school and in few seconds somebody won :) that was mindbending...

I catch the queen fish and when I click okay to bind the fish to me, I hear the "loot" sound in the background repeatedly. Okay... so I put in a ticket and keep fishing. Holy cow! I catch the blue striped racer! Of course, same stupid issue. I couldn't loot either fish. So, the loot window is still open on the blue fish and blizzard wouldn't award me either fish. The guy just says, "it must be your addons". What a bunch of jerks. He says, "you'll just have to fish for it again". Do they even play the stupid game? I blow two hours every sunday afternoon to catch a stupid virtual fish. So, I should blow another 10 weeks because their unwilling to award me the fish that is still open in my loot window? Nice job blizz...

When the tournament starts, is there a set amount of pools that spawn all over STV? Or do they respawn throughout the 2-hour period? Also, are there any specific areas where tasty fish pools spawn more often than others?

Mirose on EU - my hunter has 2087 unbuffed with stamina/health gear and does not have neither the Fishing hat nor the boots. So 2k++ is possible :) I will soon have 2296 hp I hope.

I change gears all the time depending on whom I fight - but this is based on blood ring and sfk ring and 100 hp on head.

Just so you know:
I do change depending on the situation so if you check me out and I have less that is because I i.e. am using legionnaires ring and/or meadow ring instead of bloo ring and sfk ring, googles with 8 agi instead of 100hp, lynx or trailblazers instead of grizzled boots, and sentry or lizardhide cloak instead of tranquillien...

I also have a pair of +4 stamina bracers that I am not using yet. If I did have the wsg-staff instead of crescent that would give me +1 stamina more. The fishing hat would increase my stamina with +7 stamina and the fishing boots with another +7 stamina.

I am hoping to get the hat and boots soon - then my max health will be 2087+(190*110%/100) = 2296 hp

I have 5% extra health due to hunter endurance training in addition to the 5% tauren racial.

If I also buffed with rum +15 sta, mark of the wild lvl 20, fortitude 20 sta, blessing of kings 10%, "toast to your health" 20 sta, elixir of minor fortitude 27 health, spirit of zandalar (+15% all stats).... then I would probably close in on 3200-3500 hp at lvl 19... but buffs are another discussion...

Sigh, exactly fished 25 times for Keefer now. Got 2x boots and 1x line. I catch around 80 Tasty's per tourney (PvP server). I feel like want to give up, as this is my last part 'till being perfect. Today will be my 26th time ,<sigh>. Search my twink on Armory. His name his Solcovari, on Kazzak. As I said, only needs Fishing Hat and then he is perfect.

Keefer's Angelfish really SUCKS.

I hate it. I have gotten the boots but since I'm not a twink so I don't enchant I got better footwear, and I have tried 6 tournaments so far. It wouldn't have been so bad if there hadn't been
ALL THOSE CURSED LEVEL 70's AROUND
to fish in my pools and make it near impossible for me to get a clean pool.

I guess it's just about raw, hard patience, months and months and months... I think it's NOT worth it for anyone but a wannabe-perfect-twink.

got this today, really wanted the boots because I have green tinted goggles with 100 hp so the hat is not as good as that, second tourney, maybe next sunday

*edit* the hat is actually good, didnt think it was possible to put 100hp on it but it did :-)

POLL: How many Sunday's did it take you to land this and the boots fish?

Been doing this tourney off and on for a LONG LONG time... and now with 70 escorts and have never laned a rare fish. Always the damn tasty fish. Could of won the tourney a few times, but I just toss the tasty fish as I have no need for them, just want the hat and boots! Please oh please help me!

Tips or tricks, anything at all, what do I have to do?

Rare fish that can only be caught when doing the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza event. You can turn this in to get one of the armor pieces that gives bonus to fishing.

Do you find it from one of the tastyfish spawn points or can you fish it from anywhere during these hours? I saw some people who were fishing in normal water and thought they might be looking for these (possible they were trying to find tastyfish and didn't know how the contest works :P)

Be careful when trying to land rare fishes. Today I caught this fish, as well as a Defian Queenfish, and lost both by re-casting too quickly.

If you happen to land a rare fish, it will pop up a message asking if you are sure you want this item to bind to you. If you re-cast (thinking it's going to be just another tastyfish) before clicking "Accept," this box will disappear, and not allow you to click "Accept." If this happens, you lose your fish. Blizzard needs to change this as it would be retarded for you to fish for several hours, waiting several weeks for this event to come around on Sundays, just to toss it back. OF COURSE I WANT MY RARE FISH!

My advice is to take each catch slowly. Goodluck all on getting your rare fishes to reach 527 fishing skill..
