This is a great staff with an unfortunatley low drop rate from Zum'rah in Zul'Farrak. When my mage got this it lasted until I was 60 and could hit up the smaller end-game instances where I eventually got https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=23124. Not that much of a jump in +damage, though the +crit is nice. ^_^

The Staff of Jordan (SoJ) (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=873) is one of this staves closest competitors at the level range, but on some servers the SoJ is just too damn expensive.

If you're a Priest, SoJ might be a better option due to the +Spirit.

Not sure if the Soj is comparable to this staff in terms of availability but this one ain't all bad for 42+ casters in general. It has a great potential in PvP aswell, but as you can see the bonus clearly benefits resto builds. The only other staff I can see in direct comparison is this one https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=1720 which provides nature spells with a bit of an edge. Since most casters would prefer the int buff over spirit I guess you would have to take into consideration the way you play as well (defensive vs offensive).

Btw, drop rates appear to be quite acceptable as of this moment. I'd say farm it while it's hot...

This is a great staff for all casters. Mages love the int buff, Warlocks will love the stam buff, Priests love both, although no spirit. As a bonus the +spell dmg is great in PvP and PvE. Used it up to lvl 60 before I found a suitable replacement!

My mage used this staff until I got my glowing brightwood staff and my priest used this until I got my benediction. Both characters got this on their first run through ZF. However, my poor fiance ran ZF over 15 times and never once saw it drop. Has the drop rate been lowered that much? Or was I just amazingly lucky to get this staff on my 2 characters?

Best staff (that's BoP) for the 40-49 bracket.

However there is the Kindling Stave (Early boss in BRD)... that has +14crit rating, fire resist, etc... but I prefer +dmg for a lock!

Just a heads up about this staff, if it is going to drop expect the fight with Zum'rah to get a lot harder than normal.

He'll summon an extra 4 undead elites during the fight along with all the others that get summoned during the normal encounter. They come from the graves surrounding the temple he's in, and you cannot clear the graves early. They will still spawn during the encounter regardless if you have cleared the graves around the temple first. Most groups are going to have the cloth wearers closest to the temple entrance, if that happens they're going to get obliterated by the extra spawns. Just make sure everyone is inside the temple, and that the tank holds him closest to the door to ensure they're going to get aggro from any extras that run up. If I recall, the extras actually run up to the steps so they're going to aggro no matter how far you're inside.

I've ran the instance around 30-40 times between all my characters, and eventually noticed the change in difficulty. It's only dropped a handful of times, however since I noticed the extreme change in difficulty I've managed to successfully call when the staff is going to drop every time that it did.

As a mage I preferred using the Hypnotic Blade + Celestial Orb instead of this.

You get +1 spell damage, +1 int, and +1 spirit, but you lose 10 stamina. However you do gain a 30 minute cooldown to restore 400 to 1200 mana.

So for grinding I would take the pair instead of the Vexing Cane. For PVP the Vexing Cane is better.

well if ur planing on putting 40 spell dmg on a lvl 42 wep, then ur prob a twink or close to and then 10 stam i very nice compared to orb + hypnotic since that no stam at all.

I just noticed that https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=17737 combined with https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=7714#dropped-by is better...unless you want the extra stam but if you have the hypnotic blade with the Could stone it gives:

21dmg and healing
18int.
13 spirit

Where as the Zum'rahs Vexing cane has

21dmg and healing

10stam

Depends on if you want spirit or stam i guess. All though you can put the 40 spell dmg on the Staff for those who have the gold

I'm trying to get this staff, though it's rather hard t'get.

Been here like 5 times, never dropped 2 of the times dropped Jumanza Grips, the rest of the times he dropped a lousy green -.-....

A while back on my warlock I had my friend run me through up to just the boss a couple time. It tooks 3 runs, and around 25 minutes to get this.

I'm looking at it now for a twink warlock. It's a nice staff.

Oh, guess i was lucky then. Got a boost by lvl 70 warrior. He just cleaned all, and i got cane on first try =) 40 spell dmg on it and the leveling burst can begin!

I got this its a cool staff i didnt know it was such a rare drop i got it at lvl 47 i think (but i traded it for a better staff the lvl 50 druid quest i got the shadow moon staff) this staff is good for twinking lvl 49 mages druids and other spell casters. i wouldnt get this if ur a hunter dule wielding is better on the off chance you have to fight up close incounters (omm so u cant kite) would be one. But if ur a mana hunting hunter go for it :)

just a heads up - I have run my alt through here on a friend's 70 with a view only to get this staff. i have now killed zum'rah upwards of 12/13 times and it has not dropped at all.

The drop rate is listed as 15%, but I don't think they have changed it since they nerfed this boss during one of the BC patches. It's closer to 8-10%, imo. Whenever I need mageweave, I farm the graves and kill this guy after I clear that room. Usually, will just drop a random boe green.

Reidra, that's a great suggestion to get the Scepter of Celebras if you aren't lucky getting the Vexing Cane.

I can't be bothered going through all the number crunching, but just to let you know this staff is FAR superior to the Illusionary Rod. DO NOT pass this up to stick with your Rod. To put it in perspective, this staff is arguably BETTER than the Staff of Jordan since it has +10 Sta instead of +10 Spi, which is a huge improvement. Jordan gives an extra 5 damage, but that's not enough to mitigate the superior Sta boost this staff gives, imo at least. In fact the only thing that might give SoJ the edge is that you can use it at level 35.

And for the record, I do not think those drop rates are correct. I've killed the Witch doctor about 35 times all told (been through ZF a ton with my first 2 (non-caster) chars, plus my current level 48 Mage, PLUS I helped a Mage friend farm for this staff by resetting the instance over and over for an entire weekend. I've seen it drop ONCE. And it was with my Mage, and I won it. Yeesssss.

If you've run any high level instances, often items that are suitable for any caster class will have the tooltip "Increases damage AND healing..."

It's just because the developers are lazy, not that they intend it for use only by a healing class. I wouldn't be upset if I had to roll against a mage for this (I'm a priest).

Additionally, many people are saying "it's not worth getting just +21... that's insignificant". Understand that +damage items are the only way to increase the power of our spells, and +21 is very decent as far as +damage for this level goes. Stack a few of these together (I have +shadow damage goggles, and three other +damage items) and you can get a surprising increase in DPS. Try it out.

I've leveled from 43 to 46 almost entirely in ZF, and i still hav'nt won this cane >_<
Seen it drop twice out of the 7/8 times ive been there. Killing Allis helps remove the frustration of losing the staff again/getting a crappy green drop off the guy, then i jst go right back in there an try again =P. I have made 55g and gone up 3 1/2 lvls in 3 days so its not all bad =)

Unless a melee class roles, just be quiet and run the instance again.

I FINALLY got this !@#$% today on my like 20:th ZF run.
It dropped the first two times i went to ZF, but i didnt win the rolls, but i though 'well, this droprate seems fine!'
hehe, i didnt know that it would take me weeks before i saw that staff again... >_>
It hurt my pride to use that illusionary rod til lvl 51 XD

A lot of people keep commenting on having to make X number of runs and never seeing it drop. Apparently they're just not good at math or something...The drop rate is 6.5% according to Thottbot, as you can see above. That means that, on average, you'll see the staff drop once every 15 runs. Could be more, could be less, but you'll be a lot happier if you expect the former and get the latter instead of vice versa.

Anyways, i've been reading the comments from over a year ago and i've seen a few people say locks need spirit over stamina. two words...LIFE TAP. locks need alot of stamina(more than intellect as a matter of fact) because if they run out of mana they can just lifetap...and hp beats mana anyday, who doesn't wanna live longer?

This dropped for my group today, 2 warriors, 1 pally, 1 hunter, and me(priest). I rolled need bcuz i'm currently using a crappy green staff, the F*&$%ng hunter rolled need also and of course won! I said "wtf are you doing?", his reply was that it was something that he could use, but would probably sell to vendor for the money. Why is there always one $%^&*!@ in a group that ruins instance runs.

OK all u idiots who have been posting that preists wont go shadow spec for raiding are a bunch of #$%^tards shadow preist is one of the best raiding class not only do they have vampiric embrace which heals all party members equal to 25% of dmg done but they also have vampiric touch which gives mana to all party members equal to 5% of dmg done shadow preists are also probally on second to the warlocks dmg so yeh preists are better of raiding shadow spec cos druids make much better healers than holy preists i think ive made my point btw imo this staff is not worth going through to much trouble for seeing as your not going to use it at 70.

Unless you're one of those ebayers/twinks that has Staff of Jordan this is quite simply the best caster weapon available in the 40-49 bracket (and arguably better for warlocks and pvping mages than the BoE epic). Tis unlikely I'll be replacing this until The Staff of twin worlds when my warlock hits 58 and goes to outland (and yes there's better for 50-58 in azeroth if i could be bothered to hang about doing old-world instances and so forth).

Well, +21 may not seem like at lot (although its high compared to many items of non-weapon types at higher lvls), men the bonus is high compared to the lvl and there are precious few staves or even weapons that grant spell dmg bonus at these level. The stats are higher on illusionary rod, but if you are a frost mage mobs never come near you long enough to damage you dangerously anyway, and if they do, you probably couldn't handle them anyway (too high-lvl or too many or too low mana pool etc.).

I'd go with this staff any day over illusionary staff... I'd rather have both, but i'd choose this one, if I could only choose one, whatever my caster class (balance druid, priest, mage, warlock, ye, perhasp even shammy).
There are other ways to ensure enough stamina.

The mob just dropped it, when I was there earlier today, and our Paladin decided to "need" it, without asking for permission, he ended up winning the staff, and got flamed by group.. He won a blue mace a few minutes ago, so it was totally unnecessary to pick up the staff.. He realised his mistake and offered to trade it.. (IDIOT) The rest of the group made a roll to see who got the honor of kicking him..

I'm a 'lock so this staff would have been great for me.. May God punish the greedy retards!

ya, ran ZF from lvl 35 to lvl 39 on my fire mage with a lvl 70 hunter friend. this dropped 1st run, the gloves 2nd run, then mojo on 4th and i also have both the 'thraze weapons. took 11 runs all together in completion and about 15 hrs of running. gooooooood times

Got it on my first run with a 60 warlock, 40something warrior, rogue, hunter plus me, a 44 druid. I was the only caster except for the lock(who already had Soul Harvester), so I got it. Wee.

I dunno, I've got Illusionary Rod with +30 spell damage enchant which kinda rocks this one. It's pretty plain but I wouldn't mind gettin' it.

It dropped in ZF last night after running through like 20 times and the lil' priest beat me on the roll. <sigh> Looks like I'll be using my Illusionary Rod with spell damage for awhile longer. It's still a good staff but it's pretty common, which is the only problem IMO.

12% Drop rate my hairy....rear. I've run ZF since my priest was 44 and he's now 49 1/2. I've maybe had one or two failed mara runs and one part of an ST run, no grinding or questing. So yea, ran it alot.

Staff has never dropped. Consider yourselves lucky that ya found it on the first few runs

killed this guy 3 times, staff dropped every time, but by the third time i realized "hey, this is better than prophetic cane+hypno dagger"

so i rolled need and won cuz i was the only caster.

Anyhoo, this guy summon2-3 of those zombies maximum.
The only thing they do thats really bad is interrupt spellcasting. if you don thave enough dps to kill this guy before he summons too many zombies, you prolly have noob sin ur group.

ALSO, if your a shadow priest-- Silence works wonders when he attempts to summon

Been grinding it yesterday with 60 rogue 55 mage and 58 priest, 55 mage wanted it too (I'm 46 warlock) we also had a 48 warrior
We just unequiped all, SS priest and went through instance like hell we all died when we came to boss (only rogue survived with vanish :P) rezzed killed him, didn't get it. Ran out reset and killed whole instance while we waited for ss cd. Did about 6 of those runs in 2.5 hour got 2 staffs 3 gloves and some random green worthless piece of crap, just find a couple of guildies who wanna do a quick run with you and get it easy

I've had terrible luck getting this staff to drop, but will persist as it is undoubtedly the best staff for a mage until lvl58 when the Rod of the Ogre Magi becomes available.

If you're a frost mage, slap the new Winter's Might enchant on here for extra damage.

23 runs. 23 ZF runs in 5 days. Only seen gloves drop 3 times, staff once(outrolled by a ninja). Point is, if you want this and dont get it on 1st ZF run when you do quests. MAKE A FARMING GROUP SPECIFICALLY FOR HIM

With the insanely low drop rate of this, it finally dropped tonight after my good 10+ runs of the place; dropped last night too but I lost it to our Priest.

Funny though, now that I have it, it's not much better than

Hypnotic Blade(催眠之刃 Umbral Cystal (暗影水晶 suggestions for anyone in a similar position? Seems to be I have an extra +6 Sta, +3 Int, or +5 Shadow Damage, +12 Spelldamage (all Schools)

Hi guys,

I'd like your opinion on what would be more suitable for a lv.49 B.Elf Destruction Warlock? Zum'rah's Vexing Cane or Glowing Brightwood Staff (亮木法杖 depend highly upon super-criticals thanks to the 'Ruin' talent, so I'd like to max spell damage as much as possible (already have 雕像 - 红宝石蛇 :D ... I'm a total n00b to this game who was lucky enough to go mining/jewelcrafting lol), however I'm finding I run out of MP when I'm solely defending a node on AB, so I'm figuring the extra INT from GBS might come into effect?

I'm also close to having the materials ready for 'Enchant Weapon - Major Spellpower' (+40 spell dmg).

I already own both staves so would like a general opinion before applying the enchant. :)

I was after it like grazy too so it never droped for me. Then one nice day I saw the soulkeepe on ah. Well leveling to 49 diddn't see like a big challange to me so i am happy with my soulkeeper and totally belive it is better then Zum'rah's Vexing Cane. So...get over it! It is not the best staff in Azeroth!

Right now I'm using this staff. 逐灵法杖 me if I'm wrong but isn't it better? Or does the dps really matter as a mage?

I don't the stats here on Alla but ingame it has +12INT and +12STAM. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong staff on here?

All casters should be running ZF to get this staff. If your still using Staff of Illusion when you get up to 45 or so GET THIS. Probobly better for Mage's and Warlocks though because of the lack of Spirit but Priests will still do well with it.

12 kills and still counting, havent seen staff drop once.

dropped gloves 9 times
dropped !@#$ green tradeable item 3 times.(pretty sad for hardest boss in zone to have tradeables instead of 100%chance of blue on loot)

getting this staff isnt easy, its his very rare drop, and you will likely have to roll against every priest, mage, warlock and druids on top of that. i have yet to even see it drop, winning the roll is going to be another story. if you got this, you are very lucky. its decent staff straight to 60.(outdated at 60 by raid instance drops, but still not horrible to have, alot of 60s still have it on, or Inventor's Focal Sword)

very great staff if you can get it, but i might end up resorting to Inventor's Focal Sword from maruadon with +1% spell crit on it, common drop from that boss, and druids/priests can't use swords, so rolling would be only between mages/warlocks or greedy paladins.

the boss that drops this is the hardest in the zone, simply because of all the adds he summons. he summons a set number as his hp drops, and if dead hero is up, he will summon him+2 adds. safest way to do it is to clear all the graves, but clearing some and not all is pointless, as he will use whatever you leave him. you also don't know if dead hero is up, dead hero is random spawn in one of the graves, named mob that comes with 2 more adds. dead hero is tough, and immune to shadow but drops green tradeable. my style of taking down priest is just to throw all dmg to him, ignore adds, loot quickly, then revive after, or have priest/paladin revive with soulstone. suicidal, but it just saves time and ussualy works every time. if you want to clear all the graves you're looking at another 15mins of wasted time. just remember to loot very quickly, blizzard never fixed his body, his body goes poof in like 1min. if you wiped killing him and didn't loot, its very likely drop will rott before you get back. this could be because he has green on him instead of a blue though, but i wouldnt know.

whats more sad is that im going to have to roll against the people on their first run whenever it does drop, us people that do 2 dozen runs for something shouldnt have to roll against newcomers to the zone.... joy joy... thanks again blizz..

I finally won this after many tries with my druid. It dropped the first time I visited ZF and I lost the roll to a priest. After many more runs it finally dropped again and I won the roll against a priest. At level 55 I still think this is my best staff and will probably use it for a good while. Just need to slap on a high lvl enchant to make the ball glow.

I'd definitely recommend clearing the graves before you challenge the boss unless you want a boatload of his zombie friends to wake up.

Oh yeah the Jumanza Grips drop a lot more often than this staff. Awesome hands

I was running Z'F at lvl 40 with a lvl 45 Warrior, a 43 Hunter & a 70 Rogue,
just doing it for XP really & this staff dropped! I had forgotten all about it,
but they let me "Need" it & I was so happy, then we ran it again & Jumanza Grips
dropped, since nobody else in my party wears "paper" I got them for sure!

Now all I gotta get is lvl 42 & I'm set for quite a while ^^

(yeah, we had no healer.... it was interesting!
I accidently caused a wipe & the Rogue said that
was the first time he had died in 2 weeks rofl)

im really just not sure about this item, i mean illusionary rod is +15int +7stam +10spir plus a +30 spell dmg enchant really isnt better then this? i mean does that +21 reallyy do that much to make it worth it?

I have submitted the screenshot of it (that's me in purple, above). It's great for a healer who is intel/ +heal spec'd like my druid.

NOTE to get it, the safest way is to open each of the grave mounds around the Witch Doctor before you engage him. Otherwise, when you engage boss he will sometimes (mostly?) raise those undead and pwn them on you :)

The clearing of graves takes ages. The Witch D himself is easy IF he can't raise mobs to pwn you.

A 60 priest in my guild is using the Illusionary Rod from SM, so I decided after AQ20 to help him farm for this since it'd be really quick and easy and would probably pay for my repair bills. Ran it 3 times before I ran out of time had to go, got some crappy BoE greens. Gonna farm some more tomorrow before MC.

up till now (48), i've lost on pretty much every roll. I've attempted ZF twice with PuGs and we wiped both times. But first time won the gloves. Second time won the staff.

Strategy we used both times was to just put everyone on the boss and worry about the adds after he goes down.

Just got this In Zul'Farrak from the witch doctor boss that summons zombies.

Graphic isn't that good, just a staff with a little white ball at the end.

LOL reading all comments i must be extreme lucky....i had the staff the glvoes and the mask from ZF droped in 2 runs ...needed them and won all!

This staff droped the first time i was in ZF ever! (im new to wow)

Well, I play a 53 gnome mage on Aggamagan. I have had the WORST luck ever getting this thing. I began running ZF at level 41 with the help of a level 60 friend. I ran this god-forsaken instance 47 (yes, not an overstatement, actually 47) times before I saw this drop once. By that point, I was 50 and had already finished ST, Mara, and the first bit of BRD. Naturally, I needed and was lucky to be the only caster of my level who wanted it. Won the roll, and I must say, I adore this staff. I really dont mind the looks that much...its not really bothersome. It could be cooler, sure, but why worry about appearance when the stats are this good? Yea, if you can get it, blade of eternal darkness is better for locks and mages, and, hell, maybe the mage sword that drops in BRD is as well, but, quite frankly, this staff will pretty much keep you covered to 60. Better weapons exist, and if you can find them, jump on it. However, if you are able to get Zum'Rah to drop his cane, do know that you are getting a pretty powerful caster weapon.
