This, together with Hypnitic Blade from Scarlet Monastery, is a really good alternative to Staff of Jordan if you are planning to do a warlock/shadowpriest twink. Same amount of spelldamage, but more stamina and less intellect/spirit.

It does. What you say, however, is both irrelevant and wrong.

When pointing out which twink items are better, you can't really take cost into account. The whole point of twinks is that they are expensive, so if you're not going to get them good enchants then don't bother getting a twink.

Secondly, your comment about Hypnotic is way off. Required level takes precedence over item level for enchanting, so since HB is req lvl 34 it can not be enchanted with TBC enchants. Staff of Jordan, however, can. This fact alone gives the staff a +24 damage advantage over the blade, in addition to the stats already on the weapon. SoJ is many times more expensive, yes, but it is quite clearly far superior.

This is a very nice offhand for a level 39 twink if you can't afford "proper" gear and enchants, and it's excellent for the level, but for a truly 'optimized' level 39 twink this item has no value.

A cheaper and easier to acquire alternative to this offhand would be Mordresh's Lifeless Skull. This offhand drops in Razorfen Downs off a boss by the same name. So you'd be able to rerun the place a few times and get it, as opposed to shelling out cash to someone on AH (or hope to get real lucky in Mara).

Note that the skull's +13 Spell Damage as opposed to +17 Shadow Damage.

So it's possible that the alternative I'm suggesting would be worth checking out for a Warlock, as they could also use this to improve their Immolate and Searing Pain... PLUS give a small boost to Pet damage.

Required level takes precedence over item level for enchanting

I'm not going to disagree with you, but I would like to point out that what you said makes absolutely no since according to what the enchants actually say. "Requires a level 35 or higher item" which means the item level has to be at least 35 and the required level is not a factor. However, this is obviously not the case, and this does explain why I couldn't get my robe of power enchanted with 15 spirit. All I'm really trying to point out is that blizzards description for the enchant restrictions is very misleading, and as far as I know (but I'm probably wrong) all item levels are equal to or greater than required level. If this is the case, then that description needs to be change to "Requires the item to Require level 35 or higher to equip". Or something similar, I didn't actually realize how difficult it would be to describe that until I started trying myself. At any rate, I don't think people will disagree that "Requires a level 35 or higher item" is misleading.

This plus https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=42948 is the best combo now for 39 druids/priests/shamans of any spec.
Compared to Staff of Jordan with 40 SP.
+9 SP
+10 Sta
-3 Int
-11 Spi

3 Int loss is well worth it for the other two bonuses.
11 Spi isn't that big a loss. Maybe 2-3 mp5 while casting talented for druids/priests.

I have a level 39 Shadow Priest who uses this with Hypnotic Blade... also has Shadoweave Pants and Robe, +14 Shadow Damage cloak, +7 Shadow Damage head, and +15 magic damage gloves... it adds up to where my Mind Flay does quite a lot of damage every tick in a method that is very mana efficient if I don't get hit. I bought it for 5g but I think the prices for all low level items has gone way up as people like me gear up their alts.

Just bought this for 25g buyout. That may be high but I watch the AH pretty close for stuff like this and had not seen it before. I'm a lock who has gone heavy into affliction and damage gear (all the pluses add up to over 220) and this lets me get about the same damage add as my staff plus carry a sword with extra stamina - in all I added 130 HP by switching from a +19 dmg staff to this (+5 stam on the crystal and +8 and the 1H dagger). It looks pretty good too with a great glow.

It dropped in Maraudon, no one needed it, not even the priest. Pretty happy, cause the whole party sucked and we killed only three bosses there, but this dropped for me, so...
I am now looking further for other shadow damage items, i want my dots to pwn.

this added with a smart destruction or affliction build and maybe some + damage gear and enchants can really make a difference.

my friend has this along with hyponic blade with +30 spell damage and other + shadow gear his corruption hits 101 per 3 secs

Azuresong Mageblade - 15 MC raids

Doing the same damage as the guy with "Tome of Shadow Force" as off-hand to his "Azuresong", while not spending your life in AV - PRICELESS

I originally thought about getting the tome, but getting to exalted in AV is a hassle. Only 17 damage separate the two, and with shadow bolt getting 85.7% of the damage bonus, this means effectively only 14.6 damage separate them. For DOTs the dam diff is only 7.3 spread out on ticks. Hitting for (up to) 14.6 more per shadowbolt is not worth investing 20+ hours in AV...provided it is up.

The Umbral Crystal is seriously under-rated so capitalize on this and get it cheap :)

No,seriously I come to thottbot, and I hear "On my server 'x' item can be bought for 1g" when on my server such an item sells for 20g.

I suppose thats the price I pay for being on one of WoW's top servers.

I'm still using this and Hypnotic Blade with my 42 warlock. This combination has almost same stats that Staff of Jordan (epic) staff gives.

I always find this for 5-10g at AH. I always buy it and sell it for 30g at Laughing Skull. Very good item and still can't find any better item.

WOW. I just recieved TWO of these things within literealy ten minutes of each other and from the exact same type of monster. I got them from Hatecrest Warriors in Feralas.

Seems like it was just a completely random one in a million (or probably more) chance avent... Because this is a 0.0% chance drop from a Hatecrest Warrior.

I got this item while grinding Bloodsail Pirates in STV. Dropped off pirate, not a mage. Not something seen often, and people don't seem to want to buy it in the AH despite being Rare/Stats/Abilities- atleast no one will buy it from me, even though I priced it well below what its worth. I'd hate just to vendor it.

This dropped off a mosh'ogg shaman in STV. I find it funny how ppl are selling it below what it's actually worth because this is the best twink offhand for any shadowpriest/warlock. yeah, locks get orb of dar'orahil but you're trading 5 STAM for 5 INT? stam is king. If you dont live, you dont do any damage period. the clicky hp regen has a 30min cooldown = useless in pvp. comebine this with a 39 green shadow dmg weapon and you'll be on top of the dps charts

ight I suggest Mor'dresh's Lifeless Skull, Second boss in RFD drop, which has an equal +5 stam and +13 spell dmg/healing...you lose 4 shadow damage but gain 13 healing and holy dmg...

Oh, and you don't pay a dime for it.
