I don't know how readable this will be but here's a little diagram of the transmute circle that is possible with elemental essences. The main circle is Earth to Water to Air to Fire and back to Earth. The two branches are Life to Earth to Life and Water to Undeath to Water. Undeath is particularly easy to come by so it may be a way to get more rare essences that you need.

Can be farmed solo by level 70s, probably of all class's (i mean if i can do it with a prot warrior :P) just go to Stratholme and kill elites and they all pretty much have a 3% ish drop rate.

not all the guys must be elite or rare to drop essence of undeath, https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=17878 drpo it too, however its a very very low drop.... if u're realy needing this better try the auction house

As for the latest patch 2.5 these materials will drop now from random Eastern Plagueland mobs as well. (not just the instance mobs).

I've only been killing the undead near Lights Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands for about 10 minutes, and I've already gotten 5. The drop rate seems to have been raised.

Stratholme is a great place to farm this plus you also get money from the various greens and blues.

I just did undead Stratholme and received zero Essence of Undeath

I suggest farming by Light's Hope Chapel they have far better drop rate

The absolute best place to farm this is Zul'Marash in EPL, but you need good AoE. Get on your mount and "trip" all the mounds of dirt and AOE all the zombie trolls that rise. I get around 6-8 essences on average.

If you are leveling Enchanting skill around 300 and need these AND your not a 70+ toon, then i must say that the infected mossflayers at the dirt pile are not nearly worth the effort off all the knockdowns and silences for the slightly higher percentage drop. As a 66 holy pally i did fine killing them but, I got zero essence on a couple rounds and the respawn was a little too long.

If you go right down the hill as mentioned above. the "scourge siege engineers" are about a 6% drop rate and they are just pathetically simple to kill in large groups.

there are 20 mobs in the basic area (including patrols but not beasts) and the whole thing respawns in 6 mins or less. At a very slow pace (screwing around in guild chat) i could clear them all in 4-5 mins and then sit to wait on respawn. Sometimes i would get zero essence on a clear but never more than 2 clears in a row and most clears would net 2-4 essence along with an impossible amount of "invader scouge stones" and rune cloth.

when i finally started counting, one round/20 mobs netted me:

12 Invader stones
12 runecloth
2 essence of undeath
1 ichor of undeath
silver i did not count (probably about 1.5g worth)
random green lvl 55 armor (barely ever drops greens)

by the time i stopped and decided to count the mobs and drops for this post i had 31 essences, 21 ichors of undeath, 124 invader scourgestones, 229 runecloth, and i kept 3 greys that were worth over a gold ea (i destroy any greys not worth at least a gold)

So it's not great drop rates but it's so much easier than runing all around near strat to find the specific gaurds that drop higher and also dealing with any silencing effects from the trolls up the hill. with a respawn of 6 min and a kill time of 4 you can do this 6 times per hour if you are really screwing off, and faster if you pay attention. and at lvl 66 i was getting very good Argent Dawn rep and even a little bit of xp.

Hope this helps the players still leveling with no 80 alts to help out :)

final note: coords are- 57/16 and this area is needed for an Argent Dawn quest so occasionally a player will show up that needs the kills, i was polite and let them kill a round and just requested their undeaths because that's what i was here for. they pretty much always gave them to me out of courtesy for letting them kill the respawns.

spent 45 mins farming Zul'Marrash and got nothing. Ended up spending 50+ gold on the AH just to get what i needed.

Just did a pull here today. (65,12 in EPL) Ran over all of the graves. Kill all of the undead thingys using Consecrate. Careful, they do a knockback. I had 4 Essence of Undeath drop for me. Good spot. Got the job done. Thanks

Edit: Waited for graves to respawn and did it another time. Apparently I was lucky. 0 drops this time

Well, it's kind of hard to get since you have to do a raid instance with 55++ elite mobs and it's not a common drop thing. But people do get them. It used for Gnomish Death Ray and Life Stealing Enchant.

The two I got were dropped from lvl 60 Scourge Champions during the quest to get the Fetid Skulls, north of the chapel in East Plaguelands.
They are non-elite mobs and easy kills.

I got 2 in about 15 kills, must be very lucky because they're not even listed above as a drop source.

The drop rate on these suck. Been looking for 12 to do my robe of the void. I refuse to pay 12g each for these things.

Farming um.. humm never seen one drop in a scolo. Maybe one in zg, as for them droping off scorges is crap too.. They need to fix this drop rate.. Im about to give up..

There's a difference between the trash or white item Ichor of Undeath, and the green item Essence of Undeath.

Ichor = 60s a stack to vendor.

Undeath = 10-16g on Anvilmar.

Used in a lot of 260-300 professions.

It's also a mat for the Lifestealing enchant.

It's easy to farm at 70, since any class can sneak around strat at will. (just watch where you're walking)

Also has dropped rarely off Skeletal Champions.

On Aegwynn if it is even in the ah each essence sells for 10-15 g each. You need 6 of them for lifestealing? Better go farm strat or scholo!

Over on Thrall people are wanting 12G each for them, on the low end.

Before the expansion, you couldn't give these away...you could pick them up off AH for 30 to 40 silver each.

Hey Blizzard, nice work on not including these in the recent "Essence of" drop rate increase from the patch. And you wonder how the gold farming companies stay in business.

On Windrunner, i am picking them up of AH for 2-3g on the high end. i have bought several for 40-50s. I run Strat with my main (70 Pally) and come out with 4-5 average. They are not that rare and cheap on windrunner. I have almost 12 for Robe of the Void for my lock. Dont know what all you are talking about but like i said, they are really cheap and accessable for me on windrunner.

Well, yeah. Check out the Drop table above. This seems fairly accurate based on my solo runs of Strat, which is where I have gotten mine.

Its all because of Essence of Undeath that ruins it for me! they sell for 15-25 gold each! thats like almost 100 gold alone for that single regeant.

garona server essence of undeath sells 4 11g a piece and essence of water sells 4 1g a piece so jus buyout essence of water and have alchemist transmute 2 undeath 4 u.

BTW if any chanters can give me lifestealing on Garona realm pst phobias thx

in eastern plaguelands, right near the north tower, there are scourge champions! a few bunches of em! and i managed to get 4 essence of undeath,,and then sold them 4 for 150 g! result in the good old AH! and 1 essence,,is 40 g! its well worth the farming time coz they sell lyk anything! in the "negrand" server!

I got one drop from a normal mob in Eastern Plaguelands, it was a Scourge Siege Engineer (close to Ghostlands) who dropped it.

Killed 4, 1 dropped it.

At level 70 i solo'd scholo and got 6 of these in one run (lucky i guess), also happened to pick up the lifestealing plans which is a .94% drop rate lol.

This is on spinebreaker server, but the essence's usually go for 5-10g for 3-4.

well guys i needed some of this to level up my JC lvl and didnt expect it to cost that much. imagine my shock when i saw this in the AH of Runetotem.

1 Essence of Undeath = 15g and 22g!
10 Essence of Undeath = 199g!

dont believe me heres a proof...

Everyone. I am on server Mug'thol. You are guaranteed to get Essence of Undeath from Eastern Plagueland mobs. You do not have to go into Scholo just for this drop. They drop off of ANY undead mob in EPL (Death Singer, Undead Champion, etc.). You just have to keep killing them. I had been grinding here since I was 57 (I am 60 now) only because I never bought TBC and couldn't get to Outlands to quest. After the 3 straight levels of grinding, I have accumulated over 40 Essence of Undeath. I also got a "Three of Warlords" off of a Death Singer, along with a good 8-10 green gear drops. Just keep at it guys. On Mug'Thol, the Essence of Undeath usually go for 5-10G. Well, good luck everyone.

My 45 rogue needed six for a spell, could buy just 2 at ah for 12 g each (!). Then I read these comments and send my 70 Paladin to find the engineers mentioned above. Half an hour and 65 engineers later I had 12 Essence of Undeath. Thanks for the info guys, worked out great !

Mike, I respect your opinion (apart from the spitting). so, you are a purist ? what else is unfair; a lvl 70 sending gold to a lvl 20 ? A lvl 20 asking a high lvl guild member to "boost" him through a dungeon ? I enjoy this game and I think I am playing by the rules Blizzard makes. If you are so strict, why are you on Thottbot ? Some would call it cheating, looking for tips and god forbid, even coordinates ! Just have fun, play the game in the way you like best !

Was just running around Noxious Glade north of Light's Hope Chapel and killing the Skeletal Champion things. Dropped off one. Very next kill, another Essence. So Strat isn't necessary for this. :)

These are not hard to get. I was questing and grinding in Noxious Glade (North of Light's Hope Chapel in EPL.) I'd say I've spent no more than 45 minutes here taking each mob one by one and have received SIX of these.

Farming the area directly NW of Light's Hope Chapel and the Noxvious Glade, I have come across about 5 Essence of Undeath, and about 20+ Thorium ore in about 1 hour. Seems to be a good place to farm, as mobs respawn rather quickly here. GL.

Well, I tried to sell them for 4g and no one did, so I'm going to lower the price to 2g and see what happens. If that again doesn't get rid of them, I'll try the 10g per stack <sigh>. Do you think they would sell better in the combined AH as opposed to the Alliance ones? =/

There was a time I've seen them as low as 50 silvers each but since Burning Crusade came, no one ever do UBRS, Scholomance, Strats, etc except some rare guilds runs. I've bought a Enchant Weapon-Lifestealing for 100 golds for a friend so he can make us some and beleive me I'm sure I won't see it for awhile in Auction house. Expect a major change in the economy...

Staghelm server needs more farmers to drive prices down. Most of time they are 5g+, the ess of fire is 10g+, and felcloth is 2g+. People are crazy, so I think I'll go gather felcloth and the essences and sell on AH for outrageous prices. :)
