Unrequired after you have finished your quest line, you may turn in crystals with out it, use www.wowhead.com/wotlk to find each combanation, and then you can destroy the book for more bag space.

Just to simplify things, here's a list of the crystals you can get at the different pylons, once the quest line is complete, and how many Power Crystals they cost:

Eastern Crystal Pylon (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=164957)
Crystal Force (10 green, 10 blue) - Increases the target's Spirit by 30 for 30 min. Guardian Elixir.
Crystal Spire (10 blue, 10 yellow) - A crystal shield surrounds the friendly target, doing 12 damage to anyone who hits . Lasts 10 min.

Northern Crystal Pylon (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=164955)
Crystal Charge (10 red, 10 yellow) - Inflicts 383 to 517 fire damage to targets in a 3 yard radius. (Same CD as grenades, apparently.)
Crystal Restore (10 yellow, 10 green) - Heals the target of 670 damage over 15 sec.

Western Crystal Pylon (https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=164956)
Crystal Ward (10 red, 10 green) - Increases the target's Armor by 200 for 30 min. Guardian Elixir.
Crystal Yield (10 red, 10 blue) - Decreases an enemy target's Armor by 200 for 2 min.

20 power crystal yeild 6 reward crystals reward crystals can be sold to vendors for 10 silver each With a few trips around the crater you can make a tidy profit and keep a few for yourself but you must have desposed of the rewards to repeat the 2 quest's at each pylon
Also higher level blacksmiths need power crystals for several very nice blue items, I have yet to sell any on the AH probobly do to the fact they are easy to harvest but a market may exist on other servers

The only useful thing about this book is that it tells you what you can make with the color power crystals. Just trash it afterwards.

I wasn't that hopeful that they would, but for people like me who need to experiment, turning in the crystals for these rewards do not work towards the Loremaster of Kalimdor achievement.

I've done the power crystals quest, received the manual and read it, so I know which crystals to use where.
Is the manual required to use the various pylons?

note: after playing a rogue for a couple months I have revised my view of these crystals. In short: they are great for pvp. Also, the crystals you collect stack much higher now so they are easier to farm.

key:

R = Red Power Crystal
G = Green Power Crystal
B = Blue Power Crystal
Y = Yellow Power Crystal

Northern Pylon - located just east of Refuge Point up on the hill

Crystal Charge (YR)
AoE Fire explosion. About 3 yards. About 300-500 dmg. Excelent for PvP and AV in particular. nuff said.

Crystal Restore (YG)
A pretty weak Heal over Time. It's pretty nice compliment to pots and bandages when pve'ing. Pop this early in the fight.

Western Pylon - located directly west (duh) from the center of Un'Goro Crater on the edge of the map in the mountanins

Crystal Ward (RG)
An armor buff which gives +200 armor for 30 minutes. It stacks with the armor buff from Ice Armor but unfortunately not with Elixir of Superior Defence.

Crystal Yield (RB)
Reduces the targets armor by 200 for 2 minutes. Does not stack with Sunder Armor. Useless for casters but might be usefull to any melee who does not have armor reducing abilities. (update: even though I do have an armor reducing ability as a rogue - I must admit it IS usefull for me as it doesn't cost energy to cast)

Eastern Pylon - found at the graveyard where you also fight "Lar'Korwi"

Crystal Force (BG)
This is my favorite. A buff that gives +30 to spirit for half an hour. Healers love this thing. And for soloing it's very nice. I use this when grinding and in instances I put this on the Priest first then on myself. Well timed - you can maintain it on 3 people if you remember to rebuff once every 10 minutes because of the cooldown. I grind 1 hour every other week to get a fresh supply of this stuff. It's well worth it. This stacks with other spirit buffs such as "Well fed" from cooking (+12 spirit and stamina) and Gizzard Gum (+50 spirit). (update: no longer my favorite, crystal charge all the way baby!)

Crystal Spire (BY)
Does not stack with Thorns aura. Maybe useful for soloing or when you don't have a druid.

It is also worth knowing that you get 6 of each item you choose to create. So if you chose Crystal Force you get 6 shots of it.

ok i know you don't need the manual with you to do these after you have completed the whole thing, but can you destroy it completely to free up bank space and still operate the pylons?

There are only 3 pylons.

It takes 10 each of 2 colors combined to make 6 crystal potions. Good for PvPing and instances to help the clothies .. grin!

The North is at 54.13

Restore - 10 yellow + 10 green = healing for 670 for 15 sec.

Charge - 10 yellow + 10 red = fire explosion for 383-517 in a 3 yard radius.

The East is at 76.48

Force - 10 blue + 10 green = +30 spirit for 30 min.

Spire - 10 blue + 10 yellow = shield on friendly target & causes 12 for 10 minutes to enemies who attack.

The West is at 24.59

Ward - 10 red + 10 green = +200 armor for 30 minutes

Yield - 10 red + 10 blue = +200 for 30 minutes

This appears to be formulas for potion type items created by the pillars from the crystals. I have not tried it yet, but intend to asap.

The book allows you to create combinations of crystals at the pylons. Here are what they are and do:

Note: all of these creations are soulbound!

Northern Pylon
Crystal Charge (yellow+red)
383-517 fire damage in 3 yard radius
Crystal Restore (yellow+green)
Surrounds you in healing aura

Eastern Pylon
Crystal Force (blue+green)
Increases Spirit temporarily
Crystal Spire (blue+yellow)
Damage shield around user

Western Pylon
Crystal Ward (red+green)
Armor bonus temporarily
Crystal Yield (red+blue)
Armor reduction to target

Eastern Tower:
Crystal Force: 10 blue + 10 green = 6x +30 Spirit - 30 min
Crystal Spire: 10 blue + 10 yellow = 6x 12 damage proc on attack - 10 min, 5 min cool-down.

Northern Tower:
