Despite what you may see here, it does take three Lesser Essences to create a Greater Essence. What you see here is actually a quirk of the way Blizzard handles the spell. On Blizzard's end, a two-step process occurs:

You use the first Lesser Essence, destroying it in the process.
A spell is cast, which destroys the other two Lesser Essences, and creates a Greater Essence.

This spell here--step two--is the spell that gets listed here on Wowhead.

it's not wrong but it is not right either.... if you try to de an item that is not de able, then the next time you de something thott mistakenly picks that info up as what it was de'd from. noobs should not be enchanters.

have to doubt that you're actually getting 4 astral essences from one item.
most i've seen is 2 at a time.

the above list has an enchant formula -- which must be from early days, since they are no longer able to be DE'd

and the "Created By" info says 2x lesser -- its actually 3, like all other essence conversions.

What is the normal amount to get from disenchantment? I usually get 4 Greater Astral Essences from a green item.

Greater Astral Essences are Disenchanted from green armor and weapons and below are the details for what to disenchant.

GREEN armor and weapons iLevel 26-30 75% proc rate.

I just got a lot of these out of disenchanting Azure Silk Vest.

Previoulsy I had a very hard time trying to disenchant almost every other item but I only got either magic essence or mystic essence until I tried with these.

Fun Fact: If you look at the different items that DE into Lesser Astral Essence (and Greater Astral Essence), you will find that there are not any weapons that DE into Lesser Astral Essence OR Greater Astral essence. It is the only essence in the game that sort of breaks the rule of "weapons DE into mostly essences and Armors DE into mostly dusts". It doesn't technically "break" the rule since you can still get them from DE'ing armor (albeit at a much lower rate than DE'ing weapons). This is because the item level required to get Lesser Astral Essence and Greater Astral Essence overlaps with Greater Magic Essence and I guess Blizzard decided that the weapons should DE into Greater Magic instead of Astrals.
